Anyone Under 55 Probably Wont Get it.
THE END OF AN ERA.......
The Roy Rogers Museum in Branson,
MO has closed its doors forever. The con-
tents of the museum were sold at a public
auction. Roy Rogers told his son, if the
museum ever operates at a loss, close it
and sell the contents. He complied.
Note the follow-on article truly the end
of an era. Here is a partial listing of some
of the items that were sold at auction...
G Roy 's 1964 Bonneville sold for
$254,500, it was estimated to Sell between
100 and 150 thousand dollars.
G His script book from the January 14,
1953 episode of This Is Your Life sold for
$10,000 (EST. $800-$1,000).
G A collection of signed baseballs (Pete
Rose, Duke Snyder and other greats) sold
for $3,750.
G A collection of signed bats (Yogi
Berra, Enos Slaughter, Bob Feller, and
others) sold for $2,750.
G Trigger's saddle and bridle sold for
$386,500 (EST. 100-150 K).
G One of many of Roy's shirts sold for
$16,250 and one of his many cowboy hats
sold for $17,500.
G One set of boot spurs sold for
$10,625. (He never used a set of spurs on
Trigger).
G A life size shooting gallery sold for
$27,500.
G Various chandeliers sold from $6,875
to $20,000.
G Very unique and artistic in their west-
ern style. Roy's first Boots,
G A signed photograph by Don Larsen,
taken during his perfect game in the world
series, against The Dodgers on Oct. 8,
1953, along with a signed baseball, to Roy
from Don, sold for $2,500.
G Two fabulous limited edition BB
guns in their original boxes with Numer-
ous photos of Roy, Dale, Gabby, and Pat
sold for $3,750.
G A collection of memorabilia from his
shows entertaining the troops in Vietnam
sold for $938. I never knew he was there.
G His flight jacket sold for $7,500.
G His set of dinner ware plates and sil-
verware sold for $11,875.
G The Bible they used at the dinner table
every night sold for $8,750.
G One of several of his guitars sold for
$27,500.
G Nellybelle sold for $116,500.
G A fabulous painting of Roy, Dale, Pat,
Buttermilk, Trigger, and Bullet sold for
$10,625.

G Do you remember the 1938 movie
The Adventures of Robinhood, With Errol
Flynn and Olivia de Havilland? Well
Olivia rode Trigger in that movie.
G Trigger was bred on a farm co-owned
by Bing Crosby.
G Roy bought Trigger on a time pay-
ment plan for $2,500.
G Roy and Trigger made 188 movies to-
gether.
G Trigger even out did Bob Hope by
winning an Oscar in the movie Son of
Paleface in 1953.
It is extremely sad to see this era lost
forever. Despite the fact that Gene and
Roy 's movies, As well as those of other
great characters, can be bought or rented
for viewing, today's kids, would rather
spend their time, playing video games.
Today it takes a very special pair of par-
ents, to raise their kids, with the right val-
ues and morals. These were the great
heroes of our childhood, and they did
teach us, right from Wrong, and how to
have and show respect for each other, and
the animals that share this earth.
You and I were born at the right time.
we were ableto grow up with these great
people, even if we never met them. In their
own way, they taught us patriotism and
honor, we learned that lying and Cheating
were bad, and sex wasn't as important as
love. We learned how to suffer through
disappointment and failure and work
through it. Our lives were drug free.
So it's good-bye to Roy and Dale, Gene
and Hoppy, The Lone Ranger and Tonto.
Farewell to Sky King and Superman and
Sgt. Friday. Thanks to Capt. Kangaroo,
Mr. Rogers and
Capt. Noah and all those people whose
lives touched ours, and made them better.
It was a great ride through childhood.
HAPPY TRAILS, MY FRIENDS!
"Till we meet again." Roy would sing
this at the end of his show.

here's a good chance your cell
phone, shoes, pants, coffee and car
entered the United States, proba-
bly through the Port of Long Beach.
Every year, $140 billion worth of
cargo passes across the port's docks--
imports bound for store shelves; ex-
ports leaving for foreign destinations.
The busy Port of Long Beach, which
gets more than 5,000 vessel visits a
year, has seven container terminals
with 66 cranes as high as 15 stories,
capable of lifting up to 65 tons, that
load and unload gigantic cargo ships
over three football fields long.
Just one of these vessels, with
7,000 to 10,000 containers or
more, can carry enough shoes to
supply one pair for nearly every
person living in California.
Although 75% of the port's
business involves containers,
the number one import, based
on weight and value, is oil. On
the west side of Pier T, huge oil
tankers arrive with crude petro-
leum that's piped directly to
local refineries, where it's
processed into gasoline.
BP, which operates an
oil terminal here, has
worked with the port to
develop shore-side elec-
tricity facilities, where
berthed vessels can use
electricity instead of
burning diesel fuel, thus
eliminating harmful
emissions for docked
ships. Five of the con-
tainer terminals here have
on-dock rail facili-
ties. The rail con-
nections reduce the
amount of trucks
on roads and free-
ways, reducing pollution and
moving cargo more efficiently.
The port has invested $1.8 bil-
lion in rail improvements.
Long Beach is a landlord port,
which leases publicly-owned
land to private terminal opera-
tors, who are usually a partnership be-
tween a shipping company and
cargo-handling firm. For instance, Pa-
cific Container Terminal is a partner-
ship between SSA Marine and China's
largest shipping line, COSCO.
The port's main channel is 76 feet
deep, the deepest dredged channel in
the country. Along both sides of it are
terminals that handle scrap metal, re-
cycling, cement and petroleum. Much
of the port's business comes from
China, South Korea, Japan as well as
Europe, South America, Hawaii and
the Polynesian Islands.
In 1911, the port's first operations
began when redwood lumber was de-
livered to the north harbor. Today, lum-
ber still arrives from the Pacific
Northwest at the Weyerhauser Co. ter-
minals at Pier T. Toyota also imports
and exports autos from the harbor.
Some cars made in Kentucky are sent
by train to the port to be exported to
other countries. Japanese-made models
are imported through Long Beach for
US destinations. Toyota and other auto
manufacturers, import over 250,000
cars a year here. The port, which sup-
ports over 300,000 jobs in Southern
California, also exports to outer-space.
Sea Launch vessels there, go to sea,
where they send satellites into space.
Officials estimate that more than 40%
of all containerized cargo to the US,
comes through the Port of Long Beach
and it's neighboring Port of Los Ange-
les. Because of this, port security is han-
dled here by multiple state, federal and
local agencies, including the FBI, U.S.
Customs and Homeland Security.
The port is a fascinating place that
you need to see to understand. Certain
times of the year, they have free boat
and train tours (reservations are
needed). Daniel Yi Community Spe-
cialist for the Port of Long Beach says,
"It's incredible to see the major role the
port plays in international shipping."

HB Lofts
to Start
Construction
T
he Huntington Beach Lofts
(formally known as the Rip
Curl Project), located at the
corner of Center Avenue and
Gothard Street will begin construc-
tion in December with the demoli-
tion of the existing structure and
parking area. Completion of the first
building is scheduled for August
2014; the final
building in April 2015. The project

Entitlements:
Are They Tricks
or Treats

T
his election year has been filled
with accusations aimed at pit-
ting political parties and citi-
zens against each other. Although this
is certainly not a new phenomenon in
American politics, the venomous na-
ture of the finger pointing has been
ramped up to record heights.
Obamas rhetoric labels the ultra suc-
cessful as unfair and greedy. Romney claims 47% of the
American population has been relegated to a state of de-
pendency on government because of government.
Obama believes that the majority of our countrys ills
would be solved if the rich were required to pay more in
taxes. While Romney believes the government is spend-
ing us into oblivion and no amount of tax money will sat-
isfy this administrations insatiable appetite.
The rich believe the government wants to
distribute money from those that contribute
disproportionately to those that take dispro-
portionately. Like all things in life, we need
to find a balance. Unfortunately balancing
has not been a strong point, in any area, of
our present administration.
No person is systematically forced into
poverty, kept from success, or otherwise di-
rectly oppressed by another Americans rise.
Obama claims Romney placed people in
poverty by moving jobs overseas. If our
government does not want businesses mov-
ing their production out of our country per-
haps they should work to make America more attractive
to them rather than attempt to burden them with the re-
sponsibility of solving the countrys financial ills. Think
Germany.
When a person builds a company to the level of success
that they can share that success by offering jobs to other
Americans we should view this as a gift rather than an
entitlement. We are not entitled to piggyback our neigh-
bors ambition. We do however live in a country that al-
lows us to create our own success and I guarantee you
when you do you too will not feel that your neighbors
are now entitled to part of your hard earned gains. If we
choose not to create our own business then we will be
subjected to wages which are set by the market, our em-
ployer, the laws, and our skill set. Think reality.
The bylaws of a corporation require that a corporation
gain profit for its shareholders. Corporations are not en-
tities of charity. I am far more frightened by a govern-
ment villainizing success and money earning than I am
by a CEOs salary or a corporations profits. I studied
the debates and came to this conclusion: Obama/Biden
are in fact encouraging dependency and division. In fair-
ness to their philosophy I searched history to find a group
of people that benefited from significant government de-
pendency versus moderate self-reliance and strong cap-
italism. What I found were populations living
subsistence existences with little hope for escaping their
circumstances. Think Greece.
Romney/Ryan are promoting freedom. Freedom is not
for everyone. Freedom has no guarantees. Freedom re-
quires discipline and sacrifice and learning from mis-
takes. Freedom is hard. Freedom does not embrace
blaming others. Freedom requires effort but the rewards
are great.
Dependency is easy but it is the most expensive
lifestyle that exists. It costs you your freedom and it robs
you of hope. Socialism, in all forms, has failed miserably
throughout history. The only people with power, the only
real benefactors, is the government. Why would anyone
support an administration that promotes it?
C
rowley Interrupts Romney 28 Times, Obama Just 9Accood-
ing toWilliam Bigelow and Breithart TV..."Candy Crowley,
who was suspected of being one more liberal moderator in
the tank for Barack Obama, was more than just in the tank for him;
she dove in and sucked all the water out for him so he could pretend
he walked on water.
In the first presidential debate, Jim Lehrer, no slouch at shilling
for the Democratic Party, interrupted Mitt Romney 15 times and
Barack Obama only five.
Crowley made Lehrer look like an amateur. She interrupted
Obama nine times, (although four of those were when he wouldnt
respect the time limit when discussing assault weapons; he went
over his time limit all night long), but when it came to Mitt Romney,
she was utterly beyond the pale.
Crowley interrupted Romney 28 times. 28 times. Her desperation
to keep Romney from scoring points was so patently obvious that
it wasnt really a surprise when she had her infamous moment: the
moment when she interrupted and falsely claimed Romney was in-
correct in accusing Obama of refusing to call the Benghazi attack
an act of terror.
And even beyond the interruptions, there were numerous in-
stances where Crowleys obvious partisanship
prompted her to treat Romney with great disrespect:
1. She wouldnt let him respond when Obama lied
about the auto industry. First she called him Mr.
Romney instead of governor, then protested, there'll
be plenty of chances here to go on, but I want to...
We have all these folks. I will let you absolutely...
OK. Will - will - you certainly will have lots of time
here coming up. Romney never did get the chance
to respond.
2. After the question asking whether gas prices as
they stand now are the new normal, Obama got 2
chances to respond. When Romney asked for his
second chance, Crowley shut him off by saying,
in the follow up, it doesn't quite work like that.
But I'm going to give you a chance here. I promise
you, I'm going to. She didnt.
3. When discussing how he would deal with deductions, just as
Romney was about to destroy Obama with statistics, Crowley
jumped in to save her man not only by denying the value of statis-
tics, but changing the narrative to say Romneys numbers couldnt
possibly add up:
And Governor, let's - before we get into a vast array of who says
-
what study says what, if it shouldn't add up. If somehow when you
get in there, there isn't enough tax revenue coming in. If somehow
the numbers don't add up, would you be willing to look again
4. When Romney was trying to make a point of Obamas pension
investing in China, Crowley cut him off by insinuating people were
tired of him talking:
Governor Romney, you can make it short. See all these people?
They've been waiting for you. Make it short.
Then she really tried to humiliate him with this: If I could have
you sit down, Governor Romney. Thank you. She never asked
Obama to sit down.
5. The infamous incident when she interrupted Romneys claim
about Obamas refusal to call the Benghazi murders a terror attack:
It - it - it - he did in fact, sir. So let me - let me call it an act of
terror...
Prompted by Obama to say it a little louder, Crowley obliged:
He - he did call it an act of terror. It did as well take - it did as
well take two weeks or so for the whole idea there being a riot out
there about this tape to come out. You are correct about that.
6. Just as egregiously, when the question was about assault
weapons and Romney naturally started to discuss fast and furious,
Crowley quickly shifted him away from that and turned it into an
attack on Romneys assault ban position:
Governor, Governor, if I could, the question was about these as-
sault weapons that once were once banned and are no longer
banned. I know that you signed an assault weapons ban when you
were in Massachusetts, obviously, with this question, you no longer
do support that. Why is that, given the kind of violence that we see
sometimes with these mass killings? Why is it that you have
changed your mind?
The fact that Obama escaped all night long by lie after lie
didnt seem to disturb Crowley in the slightest. She had her shad-
owy agenda, and she stuck to it fiercely. Now it is our job to
throw her out into the sun where every American can see exactly
how dirty she is."

The Summer of 2012 "From
inspiration to endeavour..."
Like most of us, as I have gotten older, life has side
tracked me. Work responsibilities, family responsibilities
and the burden of life's stresses sometimes get in the way
of our sense of adventure. For me, years of health issues
and finding myself back on dialysis again caught up with
me and for a while I just fell out of life.
As I approached the Summer of 2012, I was determined
to take one day each week, usually Sunday and do some-
thing. Even though I am still doing dialysis three days a
week and went back to work a couple days a week back in
January, I was going to spend the Summer "Rediscovering
Southern California".
Day Number One (Inspiration Point and Duke's in
Huntington Beach).
What better way to start an inspired summer than a trip
to "Inspiration Point". This is a little but beautiful area in
Newport Beach. It looks over rocks where if you are lucky
you can watch sea lions play. You can watch boats go in
and out of the harbor. It's a great way to spend a couple
hours with a loved one, get some sun, hike down the rocks
to the beach and just take a moment to appreciate life and
the blessings we all share, living in such a gor-
geous part of this great big earth.
After reflection, both the sun's and your own,
the only proper encore is a drive back up the coast
and a stop at Duke's in Huntington Beach. If you
haven't already, I highly suggest you try one of
their world famous Mai Tai's. A Mai Tai and
watching the Angels win on the big screen was the
perfect end to a perfect first day.
Day Number Two (Rented a Boat in Long
Beach Harbor).
I have never owned a boat but always envied
those that do. Renting a boat is an amazing alter-
native. Everytime I have ever been on a boat I feel
a calmness. It is a feeling that all
your problems are far away.
Whether you are cruising slowly
through the harbor or opening up
the throttle as far as it will go
with the coast out in front of you
it is a fun couple hours.
Day Number Three (Mu-
seum of Tolerance, Fox Studios
and The Apple Pan).
The Museum of Tolerance
was by far the most powerfully
emotional journey of the Sum-
mer. The plight of prejudice
throughout history is laid out be-
fore you in a way that it stays
with you forever. You leave
their realizing that prejudice isn't
limited to the Jewish faith or
African Americans and in fact it is quite likely that what-
ever your background might be, it is almost certain that
group has been targeted by prejudice at some point.
Right up the street from the Museum of Tolerance are
Fox Studios. If you know me, my pop culture framework
basically consists of Star Wars and The Simpsons, so we
had to stop. Luckily Chewbacca was on the ride with us
and he got to visit his home; "Far, Far Away".
The Apple Pan is famous in it's simplicity. It is one of
the last of a by gone era of counter top diners. If you find
yourself in this time warp, you have to have a slice of home
made apple pie. It's worth the trip.
Day Number Four (Griffith Observatory).
This trip was probably the one I was looking forward to
the most over the Summer. I had not been to The Obser-
vatory since 1986 to see Hailey's Comet. You can learn
about our solar system, get great views of the Los Angeles
Basin and get close to the Hollywood sign. My number
one suggestion for this trip, besides taking LOTS of pic-
tures is that you have to watch at least one of the several
shows in the planetarium.
Day Number Five (Hotel Coronado and Little Italy,
San Diego).
We headed south on this day. Hotel Coronado is one of
the oldest resort hotels in California. The sun deck at the
hotel during the summer offers live music, great food and
cold drinks. You travel just 90 minutes south and you feel
like you are on vacation for the day. People all over the
world travel thousands of miles to reach this destination.
This was the biggest "foodie" day of the Summer. After
a couple drinks and a big lunch at the Hotel Coronado, we
headed over to "Little Italy" for a cannoli and to pick up
some authentic Italian deli meats for my dad.
Day Number Six (The Firing Line).
This was my "guy's day out" for the Summer. Myself
and two of my very best friends; Jim Heaney and Johan
Borutzki went to the "Firing Line"
in Huntington Beach. Yes, if
you've read some of my other ar-
ticles you may be surprised to
learn that I am in fact a gun
owner. Not only does the Firing
Line rent lanes, targets, guns and
ammo, they also offer a very com-
prehensive gun safety class every
Saturday.
Day Number Seven (Rented a
Boat in Newport Harbor).
You can make a day out of The
Balboa Fun Center in Newport
Beach. You can play in the ar-
cade, ride the ferris wheel, have a
dipped cone and grab a slice of
pizza. We did all that but also
rented a Duffy to cruise around
Balboa Harbor. Don't expect to
open the throttle on this boat
rental, top speed is about 5 mph,
but that is perfect for a harbor
cruise, enjoying an hour or so on
the water and looking in wonder at all the yachts and man-
sions that line the waterway. My co-captain on the boat
ride was my nephew Luke.
Day Number Eight (The Shuttle Endeavour).
I thought it was quite appropriate that the last day of
Summer, September 21st, was the day the Shuttle Endeav-
our flew it's last flight over Southern California. A Sum-
mer for me that started with inspiration completed with
thoughts of my next endeavour. Outside of sports arenas
and our own 4th of July Parade, we rarely find ourselves
grouped as strangers cheering and applauding and high fiv-
ing each other and that was the best part of the day.
This is bitter-sweet as it is my last column for the news-
paper. I have enjoyed cultivating and expressing each and
every word. I have enjoyed sharing my own personal and
sometimes subjective opinion. I have tried to be as objec-
tive in my subjectiveness as much as possible. I am off to
my next endeavour and hope that your next endeavour
brings you every joy in life that you deserve.

fundraiser for his
cancer-fighting
charity, Livestrong, in Austin, Texas on Friday
night. During his foundations 15th anniversary
celebration the embattled former seven-time Tour
de France winner said he has been through a dif-
ficult couple of weeks. Those difficulties in-
cluded hits to his reputation as well as his
pocketbook.
After the federal government closed its criminal
investigation for misuse of taxpayer funds last
February, some observers felt Armstrong would
receive a pass for his doping activities. But in the
wake of the United States Anti-Doping Agencys
(USADA) release of its blistering report docu-
menting Armstrongs doping schemes, compa-
nies dropped the charismatic cyclist as a product
endorser like rats fleeing a sinking ship.
The first company to desert Armstrong was his
most loyal and lucrative supporter, Nike. The
swoosh had supported Armstrong despite the
doping allegations that swirled around him for
years. That position quickly changed when the
footwear and clothing giant acknowledged the
insurmountable evidence contained in the 200-
page USADA report, evidence that Armstrong
elected not to contest even though his represen-
tatives referred to the investigation as a witch
hunt. Once Nike jumped overboard, a host of
other companies quickly followed.
Some marketing experts estimated that Arm-
strong has earned between $15-18 million from
product endorsements this year and could lose as
much as $150-200 million over the next decade.

High profile endorsers Tiger Woods, Kobe
Bryant and Michael Vick are among the most re-
cent examples of athletes who fall into that cate-
gory. However, theres a major difference
between those three athletes and Armstrong.
Woods, Bryant and Vick all strayed in their per-
sonal lives, but have been beyond reproach on the
field of play. Armstrong cheated his sport, and
arguably, its fans, even if you believe the allega-
tions that virtually everyone in cycling is a cheat.
Beyond the lack of competitive integrity that
separated Armstrong from Woods, Bryant and
Vick the latter three were all in the prime of their
careers when their reputations were sullied,
poised to continue their on-field successes and,
not coincidentally, their value as celebrity pitch-
men. Armstrongs professional cycling career is
behind him.
Theres another reason why the odds are
stacked against Armstrong
ever regaining his ability
to be an effective product
endorser, as Woods,
Bryant and Vick were
able to do. Given his his-
tory of denial, it is doubt-
ful if Armstrong will ever
be able to bring himself to
accept responsibility for
his actions as the others
have done.
Armstrong may have
escaped criminal liability
for his actions, but $200 million is a stiff price to
pay for doping.

dents celebrated
Seal Beach
Founders Day with gusto Sunday after-
noon.
The events theme was honoring those
who serve or were stationed at the Naval
Weapons Station Seal Beach.
Navy sailors in full uniform, including
Station Commander Paul Werring, at-
tended the festivities.
Its a pleasure to be invited out here
to say the least, Werring said. Its awe-
some to have the support that we get
from this community.
A cool breeze and a blue sky greeted
guests at the Seal Beach Pier as they lis-
tened to music from The Hank Barto Quar-
tet from Leisure World, the Oak Middle
School choir, and the Los Alamitos High
School jazz and marching bands.
The city was founded in 1915 on Oct.
25 or Oct 27, (there is some debate on the
issue), according to Libby Appelgate,

Seal Beach has come a long way,
Appelgate said. We were a city of 250
and now were a city with 24,000.
The Seal Beach Lions Club provided
bratwurst and hot dogs, and the Founders
Day committee sold t-shirts in honor of
the anniversary.
It is a great place to live, and it's
small town living at its best, said City
Councilwoman Ellery Deaton. The pro-
gram that the Founders Day Committee
put together is just spectacular.
Karen Anderson, a Seal Beach resident
who attended with her dog Bugsy, said
she loves the little beach community.
"And Bugsy loves the city," Anderson
said eight-year old Cienna (whose last
name we thought we wrote down, but ap-
parently not) said she loves Seal Beach be-
cause she can go swimming in the ocean.

VOA..."Recent interfaith worship
service on a California beach an hour south
of Los Angeles celebrated the ocean and
the state's surfing culture. Christians, Mus-
lims, Jews and others in attendance believe
the ocean teaches lessons about life and
faith.
Each morning at Huntington Beach,
which calls itself Surf City, the surfers are
out early to catch the waves.
It is a passion and a lifestyle, said veteran
surfer Tom Morey, who invented a modi-
fied surfboard called the boogie board.
Surfing for me is creation's most suc-
cinct metaphor, best metaphor, for how to
live your life. Surf your life, said Morey.

These surfers say their goal is to catch a
wave and ride it. Once a year, an interfaith
service called the "Blessing of the Waves"
draws surfers and others to talk about their
love of the ocean.
A Muslim leads an Islamic prayer. A syn-
agogue member blows the Jewish ram's
horn called the shofar.
Zoroastrian Maneck Bhujwala reads a
prayer in the ancient Avestan language.
So we actually have prayers for all the
major elements of nature, including the
water, said Bhujwala.
Heaven on Earth
A choir of immigrants from the island
nation of Tonga and other local artists
provide music.
Two Catholic priests also presided over
the service. Both are avid surfers who are
at home on this beachfront. After the
service, both went in for a swim.
Father Christian Mondor, 87-years old,
was helped onto a surfboard and caught a
small breaking wave. He was happy to
get in the water.
It takes a lot of skill, but it is a won-
derful feeling when you are moving with
the ocean, especially when you get to
stand up and ride them [waves] wherever
you want. Just to be in the water is such
an invigorating experience. It is great to
be back, all wet again, said Mondor.
There is much to be thankful for, said
Dean Torrence, who was half of the
1960s pop duo Jan and Dean. They
helped to popularize surf music with
songs like Surf City.
The sand, the ocean, the blue sky, the
weather. I mean, what could be better? I
am very, very, very blessed to be here in
a place that we call Surf City, said Tor-
rence.
Those who gathered here say for those
of any faith, this beachfront setting is in-
spirational.

Melvin Ray Heckman
April 5, 1940 October 5, 2012
Mel was born in Hanford, California,
to Vernon and Evelyn Heckman. He
graduated from Clovis High School in
1958 and earned his Bachelors degree
from La Verne College in 1962.
Mel appreciated music from his ear-
liest days and sang chorally from high
school through college and for many
years in the choir at First Christian
Church, Huntington Beach. He im-
parted his conservative view of gov-
ernment and economics to 20 plus
graduating classes at Edison High
School over his long tenure from the
time the school opened in 1968 until
his retirement in 1995.
Upon retirement, an old passion for
travel was rekindled and a new love for
gourmet cooking was born. He later
combined the two, taking exotic cook-
ing classes in exotic places around the
world. A true adventurer, he often slung
a backpack over his shoulder, boarded a
plane and took off to see what he could
see of the world. His home was always
a gathering place for good friends, great
food and beautiful music.
Mel will be remembered for his win-
ning smile, mellow baritone, solid
work ethic and the loyal, loving care he
offered family and friends. He is sur-
vived by three loving children, five
adoring grandchildren, 2 dedicated
brothers and a host of friends all of
whom miss him dearly.

What's the big deal
about lead in hunting
ammunition and fishing
tackle? If an animal is going to
die anyway, it's not going to get lead poisoning, right?

The issue of lead in hunting ammunition and fishing
tackle isnt so much about lead contaminating the spoils of
hunters and fishermen but about lead accumulating in our
ecosystems and poison-
ing other animals that in-
gest it. Lead is an
extremely toxic element
that weve sensibly re-
moved from water pipes,
gasoline, paint and other
sources dangerous to
people, reports the non-
profit Center for Biolog-
ical Diversity (CBD).
Yet toxic lead is still en-
tering the food chain
through widespread use
of lead hunting ammuni-
tion and fishing tackle,
poisoning wildlife and
even threatening human
health.
The group reports that
at least 75 wild bird
species in the United
Statesincluding bald
eagles, golden eagles,
ravens and endangered California condorsare routinely
poisoned by spent lead ammunition. Meanwhile, every year
thousands of cranes, ducks, swans, loons, geese and other
waterfowl ingest spent lead shot or lead fishing sinkers lost
in lakes and rivers often with deadly consequences.
Animals that scavenge on carcasses shot and contami-
nated with lead bullet fragments, or wading birds that in-
gest spent lead-shot pellets or lost fishing weights mistak-
ing them for food or grit, can die a painful death from lead
poisoning, while others suffer for years from its debilitating
effects, reports CBD. Across the U.S. some 3,000 tons of
lead are shot into the environment by hunters every year.
Another 80,000 tons are released at shooting ranges, and
4,000 tons in fishing lures and sinkers are lost in ponds and
streams. CBD estimates that as many as 20 million birds
and mammals in the U.S. die every year as a result.
Of course, lead ammunition also poses health risks to
people, especially those consuming hunted meat. Lead
bullets explode and fragment into minute particles in shot
game and can spread throughout meat that humans eat,
says CBD. Studies using radiographs show that numerous,
imperceptible, dust-sized particles of lead can infect meat
up to a foot and a half away from the bullet wound, causing
a greater health risk to humans who consume lead-shot
game than previously thought.
CBD launched its Get the Lead Out campaign in March
2012 to raise awareness about the issue and help build sup-
port for a federally mandated transition to non-toxic bullets,
shot and fishing gear. The coalition includes groups from
38 different states representing conservationists, birders,
hunters, scientists, veterinarians, Native Americans and
public employees. In April, the U.S. Environmental Pro-
tection Agency (EPA) denied the coalitions request to take
toxic lead out of hunting ammunition. In response, CBD
and six other groups filed suit against EPA in June for re-
fusing to address the problem.
Opponents of CBD (such as the National Rifle Associa-
tion/NRA) are on the offensive, supporting the Sportsmens
Heritage Act of 2012 (HR 4089), a bill that aims to open
up more federal land to hunting, limit the Presidents ability
to invoke the Antiquities Act to designate new protected
lands, and prevent the EPA from regulating ammunition
containing lead, among other provisions. The bill recently
passed a floor vote in the House of Representatives, but po-
litical analysts doubt it will make it through the Senate.

F
rom the outside, winemaking
seems romantic.
Farm workers lovingly tend to
their vineyards throughout the spring and summer,
and then hand harvest their grapes in the early fall.
Those grapes are then gently crushed by foot,
of course and turn into wine on their own
through the magic of fermentation.
Were led to believe that winemakers simply
monitor this process. Theyre there to make sure
the final product winds up on
the dinner table, but nature
takes care of virtually every-
thing.
This narrative is partially
true. But it ignores the gruel-
ing, backbreaking work that
goes into every bottle of wine
we open.
Last week, I took part in that
work during a brief visit to
California, where I visited 12
wineries in Napa Valleys
Stags Leap District. I came
equipped with rubber boots
and gloves and offered to
help wherever an extra hand
was needed. Im still hurting.
Wherever wine is made, har-
vest is a special time. But the
work is exhausting.
In the evenings and early mornings, vineyards
are packed with laborers collecting fruit, as pick-
ing while the weather is cool protects workers
from daytime heat and ensures the grapes arrive
in pristine condition.
The roads are equally busy. In the mornings and
evenings, trucks are filled with grapes. Through-
out the day, those same trucks haul equipment and
vineyard supplies.
Wineries are abuzz with around-the-clock activ-
ity. Forklifts and tractors are in constant use. As
grapes come in, theyre sorted, de-stemmed, and
sorted again, as no winemaker wants leaves, spi-
ders, or rocks to end up in her wine. With white
wines, those grapes are crushed and pressed be-
fore fermentation. With reds, most of the grapes
are typically left intact before theyre placed in
barrels or tanks. At this point, yeast gets to work
gradually converting the sugar into alcohol and
imparting a litany of
new tastes and aro-
mas. Over about two
weeks, what begins as
grape juice becomes
wine.
Throughout this
period, winemakers
regularly taste the
fermenting juice and bring samples to the lab-
oratory to make sure the process is progressing
as it should.
For every winemaking team, the cleaning never
ends. From bins, sorting tables, and de-stemming
machines to tanks, pipes, and winemaking equip-
ment, scalding hot water is used, over and over
again, to hose down virtually everything. Wineries
are very wet during harvest season.
The work seems endless. Harvest only lasts
about six to ten weeks, depending on the grape va-
riety. But during this period, 12- to 14-hour days
are normal. Much of the work is messy and phys-
ical. Some is mind-numbingly repetitive. Many
tough choices have to be made. And at every step,
attention to detail is critical one small error
could result in hundreds of gallons of lost wine.
Despite all the effort, harvest is magical. The
air is filled with energy and the smell of fer-
menting grapes. Winemakers and their teams
beam with joy, knowing their work will bring
joy and pleasure to countless people. I cant
wait to go back.

y scoring big on the economy, gas
prices, and Libya, Romney contin-
ued his victorious string of debate
wins. He looked more presidential than Obama
did and showed himself to be an articulate, ca-
pable, attractive, compassionate leader with
sound ideas.
Obama came over as boorish and Biden-
esque. He did not learn from his Vice Presi-
dent's mistakes. When a president gets into a
bar room brawl, he loses his dignity and his
aura, key assets for an incumbent. Romney was
polite but firm. Obama seemed quarrelsome,
frustrated, nasty, and cranky.
But the key reason for the Romney win was
substantive:
1. Romney made very clear the case against
Obama's economic record and Obama's rebut-
tal about 5 million jobs was pathetic.
2. Romney injected the China issue, big time,
and tapped into a strong public sentiment on
the issue.
3. Romney made the effective case that
Obama is anti-oil, coal, and gas and that this
has doubled gas prices.
4. Romney was very effective in differentiat-
ing himself from Bush-43 and in establishing
that, unlike the GOP of the past, he was for
small businesses not big businesses
5. Romney rebutted the attacks on him
over Chinese investments.
6. Romney explained his tax plan well and
to everyone's satisfaction.
7. Obama erred in trying to make us be-
lieve that he always felt Libya was a terror
attack. We all heard him blame the movie.
Obama scored points over the 47% state-
ment by Romney, immigration, and by his
response to the accusation that he went to
Vegas after the murder of the Ambassador.
But this debate goes to Romney. It seals his
momentum and will lead to a big win."

steps on the Gas, revs lup the rehoric
and crashed into a lot of historic walls...
"Some of these things won't be news to you.
For example, the observation that over the com-
ing two decades:
The world's population will grow by 20% to
approximately 8.2 billion souls.
Car ownership will rise three times as fast --
up 60% over the next 20 years.
Even with gains in fuel efficiency, global en-
ergy demand will rise 40%.
Other observations will downright shock you.
For example, we're used to hearing that "as De-
troit goes, so goes the nation," right? Maybe not.
According to BP, while car ownership is still on
the uptrend around the globe -- in China and
India, in particular -- certain "mature markets"
have already reached "saturation levels" at
which car ownership will stagnate and decline.
And here's a newsflash: We're one of them.
Even as U.S. population grows, car ownership
per person in these United States has already
begun declining and is set to drop even further
over the coming years. That sounds like good
news for car-sharing companies like Zipcar, but
it's probably not good news for the used-car
market generally.
$5 Gas? (Yeah, If You're Lucky)
M
ore specific threats loom for older used
cars in particular. You've probably noticed
gasoline prices rising,
right? Well, that trend is
likely to continue and
even accelerate in future
years as the number of
cars on the road globally
increases, and gasoline
and diesel fuel continue to
provide the go-juice for
roughly 87% of these ve-
hicles.
Higher prices and lim-
ited supplies of oil, how-
ever, are going to catalyze
an astounding increase in
automotive fuel effi-
ciency. Right now, U.S.
cars require more than a
gallon of gas, on average,
to travel just 30 miles. But
BP projects that by 2030,
the average U.S. automo-
bile will travel the same
distance on just a half-gallon. Cars sold in Eu-
rope, meanwhile, have already hit that mark,
and Chinese autos aren't far behind.
Turn On, Plug In, Gas Out
M
ore miles to the gallon is good news,
right? Well, yes and no.
It turns out that replacing steel auto parts with
plastic and aluminum only gets you so far in the
race to fuel efficiency. Internal combustion en-
gines, too, can only be tweaked so much. The
real advances in fuel efficiency, says BP, will
be a massive -- nearly wholesale -- shift in
the market toward hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and
all-electric vehicles.
BP estimates that current levels of "hy-
brid" adoption (currently just a couple per-
cent of all cars sold globally) will balloon
toward 20% by the end of this decade, cross
the halfway mark a few years later, and com-
prise a supermajority (66%) by 2030.
The Bottom Line
W
hat does all of this mean to you and the
value of that minivan parked in your
driveway? Maybe this is just an oil company's
bias talking, but BP does not believe all-electric
cars are the way of the future. BP's report cites
driver worries about car range and the simple
fact that all-electrics are downright expensive as
obstacles to widespread adoption of the "EV"
concept.
BP does, however, believe that we'll soon see
a tectonic shift among car buyers toward hybrid
vehicles that can run on battery power for daily
commuting, then switch to gasoline for longer
trip, giving the edge to cars like GM's Chevy
Volt and Toyota's popular Prius. You don't nec-
essarily need to rush right out and buy a $60,000
Tesla all-electric Model S Sedan, or even a
cheaper Nissan Leaf just yet. But you really
don't want to shell out $40,000 for a 15-mpg
SUV today and get caught trying to trade the
thing in 10 years from now, when the shift to 60-
mpg hybrids kicks into overdrive.
If you are in the market for a new car now, or
expect to be soon, it's time to give serious
thought to making the switch to hybrids.

H
ow quickly can someone with a short sale
in their past get back into the market to
buy a home?
In theory, right away. I wrote an article last year
about how those who underwent a short sale could
purchase a home the very day after their short sale
closed. The challenge is that there are three re-
quirements that are almost impossible to
meet. First, they had to stay cur-
rent on the mortgage during
the short sale process.
Second, they
need to have
20% down on
the next pur-
chase. Lastly,
they would
need to have
decent enough
credit scores to
qualify for the
mortgage on the
remaining 80%.
Since these re-
quirements are
met in less than
1% of short sale
transactions lets
stop talking
about theory
and get to real-
ity.
Cons i der i ng
banks almost
never approve a
short sale without the
homeowner missing at least one
payment, this next piece of information
is going to the remaining 99% with a short sale
in their past. For those who made even a single
late payment during the short sale process, the
minimum timeframe to purchase a new home is 2
years. Conventional financing will allow up to
80% financing of a home two years after the short
sale with a minimum FICO of 700 (up to 75%
without a 700 FICO). This two-year waiting pe-
riod offers these individuals time to rebuild both
their savings and their credit. For those who can
only get to 10% down, the waiting period is 4
years. And for those who need
to put down
less than
10% the waiting
period for conventional
loans is 7 years. These indi-
viduals would be better
served going with an
FHA loan.
The FHA has a dif-
ferent set of rules that
favors those with
lower downpayment
capability. Although
their waiting period is three years for
short sales with a late history (one year
for short sale kept current), the FHA
does not differentiate on downpayment.
This means that a person can purchase
a home with as little as 3.5% down ex-
actly three years after a prior short sale
and get a mortgage backed by the FHA.
We all know someone who had the
misfortune of going through a short sale.
Friends, family, coworkerssome did so
by choice and others by necessity. If this
applies to you or someone you know,
please share this information. Housing af-
fordability has never been better, and these
additional buyers could be the catalyst to-
wards upping demand that further stimu-
lates a housing recovery.

Today Mr. Ray Fox, Senior Vice Presi-
dent, Market Manager, Business Banking,
Global Commercial Banking (Bank of
America) came to my office.
He scheduled the meeting as an "account
analysis" meeting in order to evaluate the
two lines of credit we have with them.
He spent 5 minutes talking about how
McMillan has changed in the last 5 years
and have become more of a firearms manu-
facturer than a supplier of accessories.
At this point I interrupted him and asked
"Can I possibly save you some time so that
you don't waste your breath? What you are
going to tell me is that because we are in the
firearms manufacturing business you no
longer want my business."
"That is correct", he says.
I replied "That is okay, we will
move our accounts as soon as
possible. We can find a 2nd
Amendment friendly bank that
will be glad to have our business.
You won't mind if I tell the NRA,
SCI and everyone one I know
that BofA is not firearms-industry friendly?"
"You have to do what you must", he said.
"So you are telling me this is a politically
motivated decision, is that right?"
Mr. Fox confirmed that it was.
At which point I told him that the meeting
was over and there was nothing left for him
to say.
I think it is important for all Americans
who believe in and support our 2nd amend-
ment "right to keep and bear arms" should
know when a business does not support
these rights.
What you do with that knowledge is up to
you. When I don't agree with a business' po-
litical position, I cannot, in good conscience
support them.
We will soon no longer be accepting Bank
of America credit cards as
payment for our
products.
