VJB VINEYARDS & CELLARS Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Espresso bar opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. weekends 60 Shaw Avenue in Kenwood, CA (707) 833-2300 | visit www.vjbcellars.com
An incredible and extraordinary wine tasting experience has recently opened in the Kenwood section of the Sonoma Valley. VJB Vineyards & Cellars have launched their beautiful new food and wine destination centered around a genuine Italian piazza, a perfect setting for a glass of wine and a little bit of people watching, just like back home in Italy! The Tuscan-influenced complex includes a daily tasting room, a full deli and marketplace, an outdoor kitchen complete with a pizza oven, a standalone barrel room building to be utilized exclusively for wine club members, VIPs and select special events, all surrounding the piazza which is now the heartbeat of the complex. And, set to open soon is the Kenwood Pasta Co., featuring a variety of homemade pastas. We knew we would attract the tourists, says Henry Belmonte, who founded VJB and relies heavily on help from parents Maria and Vittorio Belmonte, keeping it all in the family. We also have a strong following among the locals that live in the area, too. Our neighbors are very important to us and we want everyone to feel very welcome here. It is humbling to have the response that we received from the community. In March, the winery moved into the new location from a small storefront tasting room that they opened in 2003. The tasting room opened in June and the marketplace and deli started serving food in early July while the pizza oven was fired up in late July. With all of the landscaping completed by late summer, the complex is a true representation of a small Italian village. It was my fathers vision, says Henry Belmonte. It is not at all over the top, there is a lot of substance behind it. And while the surroundings are very unique for Sonoma County, and will garner most of the attention for some time, it is the wines that keep people

as well as a heated sidewalk patio. Its the perfect setting for taking in a beautiful Sonoma sunset with a great glass of wine or to warm up by the cozy fireplace. In addition to the Ledson Winery and the Ledson Hotel, Steve Ledson also owns Ledson Construction and Development, which built his two facilities as well as numerous private homes throughout the Sonoma Valley. Fans of HGTV will recall that the networks annual Dream Home giveaway several years ago was a home on a vineyard in Sonoma. That home was built by Ledson Construction and has the distinction of receiving the most entries of any Dream Home property in the history of the network. A lifelong resident of Sonoma County, Ledsons family has been farming and growing grapes in the county since the mid-1800s. We have been a part of the Sonoma wine industry almost since the beginning, says Ledson. My forefathers grew grapes and made wine right up until Prohibition. They continued to grow and sell grapes to other wineries for years afterward. With the success of Ledsons ventures including the winery, hotel and construction business came a responsibility to give a little something back to the community. In 2004 Steve established the Harmony Foundation for Children to break down the barriers between need and assistance by providing direct financial support to at-risk and in-need youth whose record of personal responsibility, dedication and achievement is imperiled by circumstances beyond their control. The Foundation is funded through Ledson Family direct donations, individual public donations and Ledson sponsored fundraising events. The Harmony Foundation provides a vehicle for donors to make tax advantaged charitable contributions, and acknowledges its benefactors who have helped to make Harmony Foundation a success, such as baseball great Orlando Cepeda, 49ers football great Dwight Clark, Academy Award winning actor Jeff Bridges and singer-songwriter Michael McDonald, each of whom helped to create a special namesake bottle of wine with all the proceeds benefiting the Foundation. Whether it is hospitality, agriculture, government service or community service, Steve Ledson and the Ledson family have been involved for many generations. I just want to help make Sonoma County not only a great place to visit, but a special place to live, and for me, that includes all of our citizens, says Steve Ledson.

ODETTE ESTATE WINERY Open daily from 10:30 a.m. until 4 pm,by appointment. 5998 Silverado Trail, Napa CA 94558 (707) 224-7533 | www.odetteestate.com Follow them on Facebook and Twitter The property is available for private events (though not for picnics). Inquire at the winery for information, options and availability.
Set in the heart of the Napa Valleys famous Stags Leap district, Odette Estate Winery has become a destination for lovers of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in just a few short months. With fruit sourced from some of the areas finest vineyards, it is then crafted into wine at the hands of talented winemaker Jeff Owens, formerly of PlumpJack and CADE wineries both part of the owners winery portfolio. The new owners of the Odette property are certainly well known in Northern California and in Wine Country. They are philanthropist, investor and composer Gordon Getty and Gavin Newsom, former mayor of San Francisco and now the states lieutenant governor. Even the name Odette has a certain cachet in the wine world, appearing at the infamous (or famous, if you come from this side of the Atlantic) Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, in which a red wine from Stags Leap District took top honors over the French vintners. Wines from Stags Leap District develop remarkable power and fine, classic structure, Jeff explains. Im looking forward to exploring every facet of our vineyards personality. He also adds that, Estate soils range from Perkins and Boomer gravelly loam to Bale clay loam and yield Cabernet Sauvignon of pure terroir expression. Odette Estate occupies 45 acres, with a total of 36 planted to vines. The soils naturally yield Cabernet Sauvignon that showcases the best characteristics of this iconic varietal. The entire estate is farmed organically, and the owners have plans to break ground on a new Leed Certified organic winery next year, which will be major and very forward-looking achievement. To sample Odettes Adaptation wines, as well as PlumpJack Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc and a Cabernet from CADE, youll need to put a visit to the tasting room on your

At the tasting venue the floor, both inside and out, is stone, the color scheme a subtle monochromatic, and the sleek modern bar is polished wood. Teardrop lights drop down from the high ceiling and throw a flattering glow. The whole effect combines both the casual with an infusion of earthy, country sophistication. The room is spacious; the staff friendly, enthusiastic and welcoming and there is a nice but not overwhelming selection of interesting merchandise, much of it perfect for gifts. Outside there are plenty of chairs, tables with crisp white market umbrellas, and another smaller, semi-private patio off to one side. And unlike at many wineries, you can buy a bottle of any of the bottles (chilled for the whites; cellar temperature for the reds) they offer and enjoy it at a table. Theyll even open it for you and provide high-quality glassware. Private tastings can also be arranged for up to six people in their private tasting room, or for as many as 15 outside on the patio. jersey signed by Andy Hampsten and Bob Roll. This is going to be a great event, and benefits a great cause, says Hampsten. The Napa Valley is one of the worlds great cycling destinations, and weve called in a quite a few favors to make this day absolutely unforgettable. It isnt just a bike ride with Legends; its a total Napa Valley experience. The event will launch with a gourmet welcome dinner for riders and their guests at Vineyard 29 on Thursday evening, where star Chef Gustavo Rios of Michelin Star-winning Solbar has designed a dinner that fits perfectly in the Legendary category. Before dinner, Master of Wine Peter Marks will lead a private tasting of world-class reserve wines from some of Napa Valleys finest vineyards. On Friday, the day begins with a nutritious breakfast at Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, after which the lucky group of riders will set off with Andy and Bob on a tour of the quieter roads of rural Napa County. Calistoga Bikeshop will provide their luxury van as SAG support for the entire ride. Pine Ridge Winery in Napa is the lunch rest stop, where executive chef Janet Sheehan will prepare a light meal to fuel the riders for the final leg of their journey through Napa Valley to Velo Vino in St. Helena. Here Gary Ericksons crew will welcome the peloton and their families for a session of story telling and jersey signing by Andy and Bob all of which will be enjoyed with more great food and fine wine from Clif Family Vineyards. And Velo Vino has a special dessert food and wine pairing planned as the Grand Finale. I am particularly looking forward to this part of the ride, says Bob Roll with a big smile. I love riding in Napa Valley; there are climbs that I have not ridden in too long a time. I am honored to be asked to be a guest rider with Bob Roll, says Hampsten. And the special dinner, plus the beautiful ride through Napa Valley the next day, will make this an unforgettable experience. I especially look forward to sitting around with a glass of wine with Bob and the group, and will be happy to talk informally or answer questions about the old days of racing. The cost is $1500, and all proceeds from this event benefit the Napa County Bicycle Coalition and its goals to make Napa County more bicyclefriendly for all cyclists. visit Northern Sonoma County for a Weekend of the most Fantastic Wine and Food pairings the Region has to Offer from Over 100 Wineries
The 14th Annual A Wine & Food Affair in Sonoma County calls for a weekend of Tasting Along the Wine Road, November 3 and 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the weekend, guests will have the opportunity to visit some of the 103 participating wineries stretching across Northern Sonoma County, sampling wine and food pairings along the way. Participating wineries will each prepare their favorite recipe from the Tasting Along the Wine Road cookbook for guests to sample throughout the event. Each guest will receive a commemorative tasting glass and copy of the cookbook, containing all of the recipes served by the wineries during the event, allowing them to recreate their favorite dishes and wine pairings from the weekend at home. More than 100 winery members will be participating from the Wine Road Northern Sonoma County in Alexander, Dry Creek, Russian River valleys in Sonoma County. Cost is $70 for November 3 and 4 (both days); $50 for Sunday, November 4 only and $30 for designated drivers for November 3 and 4. All ticket types include the Tasting Along the Wine Road cookbook. Ticket sales are non-refundable. The event takes place rain or shine! In an effort to reduce its environmental impact, the program and ticket purchase will be available for purchase online at www.wineroad.com or by calling 1-800-723-6336. A $5 service charge will be added to all phone or mail orders. The Wine Road is a travel resource for those looking to visit the region, which is famous for its renowned wine producers and cuisine, scenic beauty and wine country lifestyle. The association hosts three celebrated wine events throughout the year, Winter WINEland in January; Barrel Tasting in March; and A Wine and Food Affair. Made up of 190 vintners and 50 lodgings throughout the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River valleys in Sonoma County, something is always going on along the Wine Road. To plan your next trip, please visit: www.wineroad.com. Follow the Wine Road on Twitter and Facebook.

SONOmA ENOTECA
Wine tasting made easy
BY MIKE HYLAND
SONOMA ENOTECA Open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday - Monday No new tastings after 5:30 p.m. Call for Tuesday hours changes seasonally 35 East Napa Street Sonoma, CA 95476 (707) 935-1200 | www.sonoma-enoteca.com
If you should ever find yourself in Sonoma Wine Country with very little time and you need to make the best of it, head to downtown Sonoma, park around the Plaza, and discover Sonoma Enoteca on the corner of First Street East and East Napa Street. Its pretty much a wine country tour in one shop. Sonoma Enoteca is home to nine small California wineries who have collectively joined together to sell their limited-production wines. The wines come from Sonoma, Mendocino and Napa counties, with varietals that include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, ros, Pinot Noir, Gewrztraminer, Primitivo, plus a few blends, a sparkling wine and a port. Truly, a little bit of something for everyone, coupled with the fact that you cannot find these great wines anywhere else! We make it very convenient to taste a multitude of wines from throughout Sonoma Wine Country in just one spot, says Fred Favero, owner and founder of Favero Vineyards and a mainstay in the tasting room. With the numerous tasting rooms that have sprung up around the Plaza, downtown Sonoma has become an attraction that also includes the Sonoma Wine Walk. The Dreyer family is represented in Sonoma Enoteca with the Dreyer Family Wines label and the Compass label. The Dreyer family has been involved in California agriculture for more than 50 years, growing grapes, olives, tree fruit, cotton and tomatoes. The Dreyers jumped into the premium wine-grape business when they purchased Gran Cru Vineyards in Glen Ellen. The family sold Gran Cru to another winery and continues to produce high-quality and high-value wines for their two labels. Additionally, they produce the wines for Seabiscuit Ranch, the retirement home of the most famous racehorse in history. The ranch, located in the Redwood Valley area of Mendocino County, produces Chardonnay

and Merlot grapes. Fred Favero of Favero Vineyards made his dream a reality in 1992 when he planted his first acres of grapes in Sonoma Valley. His goal was to make the perfect proprietary blend, which he calls Monte di Sassi, which is a Super Tuscan; he also makes a stunning Sangiovese and a rich, estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, all of which are available for tasting. The Grieve family strongly believes that the Lovall Valley is the best place to grow and create the finest Sauvignon Blanc. Their vineyard sits in the center of the Valley on pebbly clay loam soil near the creek that provides moisture, extending the growing season. Two separate clones in two distinct blocks yields the diversity for more complex flavors. In addition to their Sauvignon Blanc, Grieve Family Winery also produces a 2009 Double Eagle Red Table Wine which is 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Franc. Il Cuore (pronounced eel-KWOH-reh) means The Heart in Italian. The name is a tribute to the many Italian immigrants who first planted the North Coast of California in the late 19th century. The wines are produced from choice grapes grown in Mendocino County. A hallmark of the Il Cuore style is the gentle use of oak to allow the natural fruit qualities of our grapes to become the focal point of the wines. Their selections include the Sparkling Wine, mentioned earlier, as well as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Barbera and Zinfandel. Jack and William Salerno first laid eyes on the Dry Creek Valley in 1990 and never got it out of their minds. Manzanita Creek Wines are produced and bottled by Salerno Healdsburg Estate Winery are boutique wines made by arguably two of the newest, most passionate and stubborn winemakers in Sonoma County. They offer a Petite Sirah and three distinct Zinfandels. Vic McWilliams has made award-winning wines in Sonoma County since 1978. His Victor Hill Wines continues in his tradition of making exceptional small lot, handcrafted wines. With a menu of seven different wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, ros, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Belle de Blanc, a white Rhne-style wine, there is a taste for every palette. Another large menu of wines comes from Brutocao Cellars, a Mendocino winery, where the passion for their craft turns winemakers into artists. Fermenting in small lots intensifies the fruit flavors, and by leaving many of their red wines unfiltered ensures that they will retain all their full, rich character. Find out for yourself by sampling Pinot Noir, Primitivo, Cabernet, Zinfandel, but dont forget the Chardonnay or the Gerztraminer! When you dont have a lot of touring time, take the time to tour Sonoma Enoteca and discover the flavors of Sonoma, Mendocino and Napa all in one convenient location.

viANSA WiNERY
Something Magical
BY MIKE HYLAND
LLOYD DAVIS: I am totally committed to maintaining Viansas Italian heritage, offering a very wide selection of world-class wines, focusing on exceptional customer service and treating every guest as family.
VIANSA WINERY Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 25200 Arnold Drive, Sonoma CA 95476 1-800-995-4740 | www.viansa.com
If there is one thing that truly stands out about Viansa Winery and Marketplace it is that they really take care of their wine club members. With two outdoor seating areas reserved expressly for members with views that are truly outstanding coupled with world-class wines, it is easy to see why so many people join the club. There is something kind of magical about this property and the Sonoma Valley in general, says Lloyd Davis, president and co-owner of Viansa since 2008. When you come here it is more laid back, more friendly than other wine country destinations. In many cases, you will be able to talk with the owner or the winemaker and get an inside look at how the winemaking process really works. Lloyd Davis grew up in Manhattan, in a family that regularly enjoyed wine with meals. While in college his passion for wine grew. After graduating with a degree in finance, Lloyd joined the ranks of the New York financial world where he provided capital to companies to support growth and acquisitions. He eventually became a partner as well as chief credit officer at Laurus/Valens Master Fund, a $2 billion Hedge Fund. It was at this company that he made an investment in Viansa. When the opportunity arose to take control, Lloyd jumped at the chance. For me, running Viansa is a dream come true, says Lloyd. I work seven days a week and I enjoy every minute of it. From working behind the bar, pruning the vines or accompanying our Tuscan wine club members on a Mediterranean cruise to
58
Italy, it is exactly what I want to do at this time in my life. Situated on a hilltop at the entrance to the Sonoma Valley, Viansa is usually the first stop on many travelers tour of the wine county. With its distinctive Italian atmosphere and old world architecture, Viansa is a tribute to the early Italian immigrants who brought their winemaking traditions and in some cases, their grapes, to the Sonoma Valley many, many years ago. Surrounded by vineyards, flower gardens and olive groves, the main winery building appears to have been transported from the Italian countryside. Crafted from authentic materials and boasting details like hand-painted interior frescoes depicting peasant life in the Tuscan hills, Viansas villa can easily transport visitors away to romantic Italy, if only for an hour or two. And then there are the wines! Viansa pioneered the concept of Cal-Ital wines California made wines crafted from Italian varietals grown here in Sonoma. Using traditional Italian grapes such as Arneis, Pinot Grigio, Tocai Friulano, Vernaccia, Dolcetto, Primitivo, Sangiovese and Barbera, Viansas winemaking team creates the flavors of the old world right here in the new world. And in addition to all the great Italian varietals, they also have created a menu filled with many of the popular California wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. And lets not forget the Viansa Signature Series wines that represent the best of the best. These wines are single vineyard designate wines created by Lloyd Davis, with no more than 150 cases of each wine made within a vintage. They express the best that Viansa has to offer and as a result, have become highly collectible. Only Signature Club members are eligible for the wine club discount on these wines. While I am naturally very pleased with the reaction and response to our Signature Series, I am totally committed to maintaining Viansas Italian heritage, offering a very wide selection of world-class wines, focusing on exceptional customer service and treating every guest as family, says Lloyd.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

An Exclusive Wine Event set for October 2012
Sonoma Valley Reserve, a festive wine event that offers participants the exclusive opportunity to see Sonoma Valleys classic wineries in a completely different light, has been set for Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21. This semiannual event, a series of themed daytrips around the region, will showcase rare offerings and hidden gems of Sonoma Valley wine destinations, many of which are seldom open to the public. Sonoma Valley, the birthplace of California wine, has so many hidden gems and world class wines to discover and taste all right here in our valley, said Maureen Cottingham, Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance Executive Director, We are very excited to once again, celebrate this spectacular harvest and to showcase the people, places and wines that otherwise would be impossible to experience. Produced by the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance, the semiannual Sonoma Valley Reserve will feature a schedule of themed tours that take guests on a treasure hunt of discovery throughout the appellation. Each tour includes four customized winery visits, comfortable transportation by California Wine Tours and wine country picnic lunch. Tickets for Sonoma Valley Reserve are extremely limited and on sale now at $95 for one day or $150 for two days. Sonoma Valley Reserve ticketholders will depart from Sonoma. For an additional nominal fee ($30 per person), round-trip motor coach transportation to Sonoma is available from San Francisco and Mill Valley. For tickets visit www.ReserveSonomaValley.com or call (707) 935-0803. The Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance (SVVGA) is a
non-profit trade organization serving over 500 members who share a mission to promote the awareness of Sonoma Valleys grapes, wine and history as the birthplace of the California wine industry. The Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers Foundation (SVVGF) is a nonprofit 501c.3 organization that has raised over $8,000,000 for local Sonoma Valley charities. The Singing Winemaker will take you on a journey with Great Wine, Great Music and a Great Experience
A unique tasting experience celebrating Truth, Beauty and Goodness through Wine, Music and Art!
Open FridaySunday from 12 to 5pm Extended hours often in the summer. Private tasting and pairings are oered by appointment.
www.thesingingwinemaker.com
Music and wine lovers can have the both of best worlds by tasting musically inspired wines with live music by the singer/winemaker who goes by the name: The Singing Winemaker (aka Steve Powell). Steves signature wines are his red varietals but he offers every type of wine ranging from Dolcissimo, a musical term meaning very sweetly for a Cabernet Sauvignon blush; a white Scherzando, (musical term for playful) for his, light summer white wine; a tawny Port; a late harvest Zin dessert wine along with peach, raspberry and almond sparkling wines. We focus on red but provide wine for all palates, there is something in the tasting room for everyone, he said. We have great wines and the best wine tasting experience. The Singing Winemaker has not released a new red wine in a year, so this summer he is back in action, releasing six wines. Each will have a release party during the summer with wine and food pairings for guests and of course, music for every age and taste performed by The Singing Winemaker. Many of his wines have musical names including his Harmony blend made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Old Vine Zinfandel. The Singing Winemakers popular Melody which is a blend of Malbec and Tempranillo is always a crowd pleaser along with another favorite, Amador County Barbera, which is a robust Italian varietal.
