Ifthatseemsanexaggeratedclaim,considertheconsequencesofsuppressingthereferent.SupposeoneisreadingJohnClaresbirdpoems:TheSkyLark,The YellowhammersNest,HedgeSparrow,andsoon.OrsupposeoneislisteningtoRalphVaughanWilliamssorchestralwork,TheLarkAscending.Thesemiotic fallacydeclarestheexistenceofthecreatureevokedtobeincidentalthesewords,thesesounds,havenothingfinallytodowithactual,existingbirds.Thatbeingthe case,thereisnoreasontobedisturbedwhenonesubsequentlyreadsthefollowingstatistics:inBritain,between1972and1999thepopulationofskylarksfellby60 percent,thepopulationofyellowhammersalsofellby60percent,andthepopulationoftreesparrowsfellby87percent.ButisitsonavetoaskwhetherClares poetryandVaughanWilliamssmusicwillhavethesamesignificancewhenthecerealmonocultureofintensiveagriculture(aidedbyinappropriatehousing developments)havefinallydestroyedallthehabitatsofthesecreatures,andthereisnowhereforthemtolive?Doesthedevastationofbirdpopulationsnotmatter becausetheyare,afterall,onlyreferents?Ifcriticaltheoryanswersinthenegative,thenitsurelycolludeswithagribusinessanditsremorselesssuppressionof biodiversity. Sogreenstudiesdoesnotchallengethenotionthathumanbeingsmakesenseoftheworldthroughlanguage,butrathertheselfservinginferencethatnatureisnothing morethanalinguisticconstruct.KateSoper,whoiswellrepresentedinthisreader,makesthepointdramatically:Inshort,itisnotlanguagewhichhasaholeinits ozonelayerandtherealthingcontinuestobepollutedanddegradedevenaswerefineourdeconstructiveinsightsatthelevelofthesignifier.

    7Moremodestly,wemay saythatgreenstudiesnegotiateswhattherealthingmightinvolve.Itisnoeasytask.For,asRaymondWilliamsfamouslyobserved:Natureisperhapsthemost complexwordinthelanguage.8Itmightbenoexaggerationtosaythatgreenstudiesasadisciplinehingesontherecognitionofthecomplexityofthatwordandofour relationtowhateveritdenotes.HereitisworthbearinginmindJhanHochmansdifferentiationbetweenNatureandnature.Whiletheformerisarhetoricallyuseful principle,ithasoftenbeenassociatedwiththehighlysuspectrealmsoftheotherworldlyortranscendental.Thelatteristobepreferredinthatitismoreworldly:it denotesnomorebutcertainlynolessthanthecollectivenameforindividualplants,nonhumananimals,andelements.However,suchcarefuldifferentiationshould notbecomearigiddistinction:Forexample,howclassifyapparentlysensible,universal,N/naturalpatterns?IsnumbernatureorNature?Arelifeanddeathnatureor Nature?Moreover,themainaimshouldbekeptinmind:todifferentiatebetweennatureandculture,sothatculturedoesnoteasilyconfuseitselfwithnatureor Nature,orclaimtoknownatureasarationaleforreplacing[it]withitselfanditsconstructions.9LetmeillustrateHochmanstwofold
