Rabbis Message
MISHKAN T'FILAH Several years ago our congregation made the wise decision to purchase the new Reform siddur - MISHKAN T'FILAH, which we have been us- ing both on Shabbat and Festivals. It is published by CCAR Press, the publication arm of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. It is a wonderful experience praying from this siddur, and its inclusion of transliteration (English phonetic pronunciation) for all the Hebrew texts has been very helpful for those whose Hebrew skills are still de- veloping. The edition of the siddur that we have includes two versions each for Shabbat Evening and Morning, plus a service for Weekday Evenings and Mornings, plus Evening and Morning services for the Three Festivals (Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot). In this it has served us well, therefore, in functioning for all these different ser- vices. However, what a number of our congregants have found is that because of all the content, the book is physically quite heavy to hold during services, and at times rather cumbersome. CCAR Press has published more compact editions of MISHKAN T'FILAH that only include services for Shabbat Evening and Morning. Sheila Solow and Mickey Schwartz were kind enough to give ten of these smaller books to the temple in mem- ory of Mickey's father Larry Schwartz, z"l, who passed away in 2011. The small books include their own pagination and also that of the larger books in brackets, so it is possible to use a combination of the books at a single service and still have everyone "on the same page," as it were. It has become clear that it makes sense for us increase our supply of the smaller Shabbat edition of MISHKAN T'FILAH, since most of our services take place on Shabbat. Therefore we will now be accepting donations for these smaller books, which will make all of us more comfortable. Please consider making a gift to the temple of one or more of these Shabbat editions in honor or in memory of a person or an event. The cost: 1-3 = $36 each; 4 or more = $30 each. A book plate will be pasted into the front of each siddur to record your dedication. On behalf of our entire congregation, many kind thanks. -Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman
Officers Column Building A Brownstone Jewish Community 3 Something exciting has been hap- pening in the Brownstone Brook- lyn Jewish community. Nearby congregations have been getting together far more this year than in the past. Of course, for many years we have had a joint Yom Hashoah com- memoration in the spring. But this year began with a joint Selichot service at the Park Slope Jewish Center. After the service, congre- gants from several synagogues en- joyed a performance by Iranian Jewish singer Galeet Dardashti.
The Union Temple Youth Groups
Between now and November 20, the members of UniTYUnion Temple Youthled by David Marx, and with the assistance of parents Susan Buchsbaum and Beatrice Segal, will be collecting clothes, shoes, gloves, scarves and socks, and unopened toilet- ries (including all those samples youve collected from hotel stays!) to distribute to people who are homeless.
Midnight Run is a consortium of synagogues and churches, schools and civic institu- tions in the New York area dedicated to the pursuit of justice and compassion for those who are alone and homeless.
Please bring these articles to the Temple Office by November 10th. If you would like someone to pick them up at your home, or if you have any questions, please contact David. dmarx83@gmail.com / 917-510-7541 As I am writing this column, we just participated in a huge multi- congregation Simchat Torah hakafah in Grand Army Plaza. We brought four Torahs from Union Temple. Rabbi Goodman chanted one of the readings, and our student cantor Lauren Phillips and other cantors were there to lead hundreds of participants in joyous song. The singing and dancing went on for hours! And on October 15th, we joined with other congregations in cospon- soring a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren at Congregation Beth Elohim. I think that everyone who has participated in these events has found it exciting and inspiring to join together with our neighboring congrega- tions in a greater Jewish community. Im looking forward to future com- munity-wide events. -Steven Segall, Secretary 4

If you walk into the Temple on a Sunday morning and see Broth- erhood members wielding drills, staple guns and hammers then you know that Sukkot cannot be far behind. As usual the result was a beautifully decorated suk- kah (with an assist from the Reli- gious School students). It was just the beginning of a very busy season of Brotherhood activities. On tap for October was the classic Yiddish musical comedy movie (with English subtitles), Yiddle With His Fid- dle. Molly Picon stars in the role of a young woman violinist who goes traveling with her father, performing as a klezmer duo. Thanks to Brotherhood member Phil Rubenstein, who shared this gem from his collection of Yid- dish movies. We are looking forward to par- ticipating on Mitzvah Day on No- vember 18th. Its an important day when everyone can pitch in. We wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. -David Rapheal, Secretary Brotherhood Brotherhood Builds A Great Fall The annual Sukkah building by the UT Brotherhood. 9:00 6

uniontemple@uniontemple.org UNION TEMPLE 17 EASTERN PARKWAY BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 11238 Here it is November, time to start thinking about Thanksgiving. That, of course, means not just turkey and pumpkin pie, but, even more important, counting our bless- ings. Sisterhood has many blessings to count, and they begin, one by one, with you. Were grateful for each and every one of you who has joined us, for every member adds a special dimen- sion of enthusiasm and inspiration to our warm circle of friend- ship. If you have been attending our pro- grams, you have seen that for yourself. Our growing membership also means that, to- gether, we can con- tribute even more to our national organiza- tion, Women of Re- form Judaism, and its many exceptional pro- grams dedicated to tikkun olam, repairing our world. We can all count that as a bless- ing. Soon after Thanksgiv- ing, on Saturday eve- ning, December 1st, at 5 PM, Sisterhood and Brotherhood will join Sisterhood Many Blessings to Count together for our annual Havdalah service. As in the past, this moving event will be fol- lowed by a visit to the Brooklyn Museum to participate in its festive First Night activi- ties. Its an exhilarating evening that you wont want to miss. Youll certainly want to be a part of all the exciting Sisterhood programs that will be coming after that, too. So watch this space and your e-mail for news about them. Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving. May our hearts, our homes, and our lives be filled with blessings. -Barbara Brett, Secretary 7
Religious School
Jews, Baseball and the American Experience The Union Temple Reli- gious School is off to a fabulous start this year. Though parents of our stu- dents are already quite familiar with our thematic focus for the year, Id like to take this opportunity to share with the broader Un- ion Temple community as well. What does it mean to be an American Reform Jew- ish child/person? This is the question that drives everything we do. This is a year dedicated to discover- ing and developing who we all are as Jews in New York City and in the United States. To accom- plish our goal, we are ex- ploring 350 years of Jew- ish experience. Special at- tention is directed towards a deep and ongoing discus- sion of the Jewish values that emanate from the vari- ous historical episodes we study. Themes are pre- sented each week based on an awareness of where we stand in both the Jewish and Secular calendars. Jewish holidays as well as American secular holidays are discussed within the framework of Jewish ethi- cal mandates that emanate from the themes of those observances. We began the year with an exploration of what it meant for our families to make that journey across the world at some point in time to begin new lives in America. This unit helped our students focus in on essential values, as repre- sented by what ma- terial items they would choose to pack into very lim- ited luggage space. The Sunday before Yom Kippur was focused on the de- cision made by Hall of Fame baseball players Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax to sit out of critical games on Yom Kippur. We addressed the question of how one balances numerous priorities at the same time. Students were asked to consider what kind of value they place on public Jewish identity as opposed to private Jewish identity. We also took advantage of this story to address Jewish expectations regarding proper care of our physical bodies. Our last regular class day, on the morning of Erev Sukkot, we learned about famed American Jewish architect Frank Gehry. We explored the manner in which he is able to express significant ideas and emotions by means of the way he shapes physical structures. Taking Gehry as their inspiration, some of our stu- dents then constructed their own sukkah models, expressing their own thoughts and emotions through their own design decisions. On this morning before Sukkot we also focused on issues of poverty and homelessness, which culminated in the student body voting unanimously to start collecting tzedaka donations every Sun- day that we have school. We look forward to discussing where to bring that money later in the year. In addition to the overarching theme of the American Jewish Experience, we learn Hebrew on a weekly basis too, with the goal of becoming comfortable and confident participants in Reform services anywhere in the United States. Atten- tion is placed on developing reading fluency, thematic understanding, and appre- ciation of the value of prayer. We are accomplishing these goals in two ways: Classroom instruction in Hebrew language, and communal prayer, tefilah, led by our song leader, Josh Adland. I look forward to keeping the congregation informed of our progress through the (Continued on page 8) Religious School students help to decorate the Sukkah built by the Union Temple Brotherhood. 8

When she started graduate school in 2009 Natalie joined us as an assistant teacher. She worked with Alex Beers with the Starlings (two year olds), and the Sparrows (three year olds). Last year, as part of her academic studies, Natalie had a full time in- ternship as a school psychologist at the Yeshiva of Flatbush. She completed her mas- ters degree in education with an advanced certificate in school psychology. Natalie grew up down the block and attended religious school at Union Temple where she was a member of the Rabbis Choir. She graduated from SUNY Albany, magna cum laude, with a BA in psychology and a double minor in education and Judaic stud- ies. While attending SUNY Albany, Natalie worked in a research lab where she stud- ied feelings. PROGRAMS FOR EDUCATED, ACTIVE ADULTS 55+ On November 6th (election day) the next program in this falls series will be held at the Park Slope Jewish Center from 1-3 PM. The presentation, New York's Major Minor Parties, is with Dan Soyer. New York is almost unique among states in that it has a multi party system. For at least three quarters of a century. small parties such as the American Labor, Liberal, Conservative, Working Families, and Inde- pendence parties have sought to influence state and local politics by running their own candidates or backing those of the Democrats and Republicans. Their aim is to be the tail wagging the dog, using the leverage of their support to extract promises of policy and patronage from politicians. Soyer teaches NY history at Fordham University. He is the author, with Annie Polland, of "The Emerging Metropolis: New York Jews in the Era of Immigration" (New York University Press, 2012). He is now working on a research project concerning the history of the Liberal Party of New York. On two Tuesdays November 13th and 27th, 2012, a two session course, And You Shall Go Up to Jerusalem, will be presented. It is an exploration of Jewish pilgrimage, given by Tori Rosen and David Rosen. Details of this presentation will follow. Meetings will be held at the PSJC,1320 8th Avenue, on most Tuesdays between 1-3 PM this fall. Reservations are not needed and there is no obligation to attend every meeting. To sign up for the mailing list and hear about upcoming activities, please contact the Union Temple office at 718-638-7600. Union Temple records with sorrow the passing of RABBI CHARLES MINTZ on October 2, 2012, Rabbi of Union Temple 1979-1981. We express our condolences to his wife Adele and children Deborah, Abraham, and Judith, and their families.
