BSK MARKS BEGINNING OF 10TH ACADEMIC YEAR

Baptist Seminary of Kentucky welcomes eight new students this fall as we begin our 10th academic year. Laura Edgar, a native of Alabama and recent graduate of Auburn University, was serving this past summer as a youth intern at Woodmont Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Her pastor, Dr. Jon Roebuck, encouraged Laura to consider BSK among her options, in Front Row L to R: Micah Spicer, Amanda Smith and Laura Edgar, newest recipients of part, because he has a high regard for BSK Scholars Award, with previous recipients, the Seminarys faculty. Additionally, Jarrod Lopez, Daniel ONeil and Alix Davidson BSKs block scheduling allows Laura to continue serving at Woodmont while taking classes on Mondays and using only a part of another day for travel. Due to her strong academic record in college, Laura was able to apply for and receive the Scholars Award. In addition to Laura Edgar, 2011-12 Scholars Award recipients are Micah Spicer from Wingo, KY and Amanda Smith from Louisville. This top academic scholarship is renewable for a total of four years as long as the recipients are full-time students and maintain a 3.5 grade point average. The Seminary provides recipients with a total of $31,500 for the 90-hour MDiv program (currently $350/hour). If a student completes the degree in three years, BSK provides $10,500/year (over four years, $7,875/year). Laura, Micah and Amanda join Alix Davidson, Jarrod Lopez and Daniel ONeil as recipients of the Scholars Award.

MAKING THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION AFFORDABLE IS IMPORTANT TO STUDENTS AND TO BSK

Many of our students have ministry and/or secular responsibilities, family needs, and college debt. BSK is primarily supported through gifts from individuals (43%), churches (15%) and tuition (13%). If you are interested in giving to provide scholarships, BSK Scholars Awards, or other ways to help our students, please contact Dr. Greg Earwood at greg.earwood@bsky.org or 502-863-8299 (direct line). We are thankful for the faithful generosity of all who contribute to the Seminary. A good number of friends of BSK make monthly gifts which is a great way to support the Seminary on a regular basis. Gifts of small amounts add up to sizeable totals over the years. A faithful BSK donor has given a monthly gift of $50 since 2002 for a total of over $5000!

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Ten years ago I drove into downtown Lexington with all of Baptist Seminary of Kentucky in the back seat of my Taurus. Having been a pastor for 29 years, this was a calling to a new venture. My official starting date was September 1, 2001, just ten days before 9/11. I still remember how I feltready to pursue a vision for a new school while not clear about all the details; excited about the anticipated beginning but expecting challenges; uncertain of the future, yet believing in the providence of God. For some memories and perspectives on these ten years, you may follow my blog for a few weeks on the Seminarys web site at www.bsky.org (see home page). On the occasion of my 10th anniversary, a close friend and fellow member on the Committee Dr. Greg C. Earwood that envisioned and started Baptist Seminary of Kentucky wrote me a congratulatory note in which he said: What dreamers we were! Candidly, we almost talked that dream to death, but we launched a new Baptist seminary in Kentucky after six years of conversations, prayer, and work. Seeing something that did not exist previously come into existence and then develop over these last ten years has provided a feeling of great joy. During my first year as president, someone suggested that this first year would be my best year ever. After all, there were no students, faculty, or staff. Turns out that person was wrong. There have been plenty of challenges/headaches. And yet, witnessing the spiritual formation of students as well as knowing the difference they have made and are making as ministers of the Gospel makes this part of Gods work especially fulfilling. Working alongside faculty and staff who are passionate about their roles in creating this marvelous learning environment for authentic theological education has been a privilege. Trustees and Friends of BSK have supported us with prayers, networking and finances, allowing us to accomplish our purpose which is to prepare men and women, sensing Gods leadership, for life and ministry in faithful witness to Jesus Christ in the church and the world. Thanks be to God!

Dr. Wade Rowatt has continued his stellar career in theological education by teaching at BSK since 2003. He has given significant leadership to the development of the Seminarys highly regarded Concentration in Pastoral Care and Counseling as part of the MDiv program (for more details go to www.bsky.org and click on Academics, then Curriculum). Jodi Rowatt, who holds MCM and MDiv degrees from Southern Seminary, has previously taught and co-taught seminary courses over a fifteen year period. She and Wade co-authored The Two Career Marriage and have led workshops/retreats for clergy couples, parents of children and youth, and senior adults. Both Jodi and Wade have a strong commitment to providing well-prepared ministers of the Gospel at Baptist Seminary of Kentucky. To enhance that mission, they have established the Freda Marie and Lewis Clinton Brock Scholarship in memory of Jodis parents. Because of Freda Brocks church ministry, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a woman in ministry. This years recipient is Sara Clarke (Louisville) who is Interim Youth Minister at Melbourne Heights
