STAFF REPORTS
D.C. cop guilty in trans shooting case
An off-duty D.C. police ofcer accused of ring his service revolver into a car occupied
by three transgender women and two male friends in August 2011 was convicted Friday
of assault with a dangerous weapon and solicitation for prostitution.
But a D.C. Superior Court jury also found Ofcer Kenneth Furr, 48, not guilty of six other
charges, including the more serious offense of assault with intent to kill while armed.
In a development likely to raise concern among LGBT activists, the jury found Furr not
guilty of all charges related to the ring of his gun through the windshield of the car with
the ve people inside.
Although three of them suffered non-life-threatening bullet wounds and two werent
hit, prosecutors said any of the ve could have been killed.
I really wonder what the jury heard and how they could decide not to nd intent to
kill, said transgender activist Jeri Hughes. You dont re a gun several times at people
and not have intent to kill.
It sounds like the defense did a good job in demonizing the victims, said Hughes,
who was among many LGBT activists who viewed the incident as another in a series of
violent attacks against LGBT people in the city over the past several years.
Police and prosecutors said the incident started with a verbal dispute between Furr and
one of the transgender women and her friends when Furr became angry and aggressive
after the woman refused his offer of money for sex in the area of 5th and K St., N.W.
Superior Court Judge Russell Canan scheduled a sentencing hearing for Jan. 10, 2013.
At the request of Furrs attorneys, Canan released Furr into the courts high intensity
supervision program, which requires that he wear an electronic ankle bracelet and
undergo alcohol and drug tests. He had been held in jail since the time of his arrest.

Gay Del. candidates poised to make history
A Rehoboth Beach Realtor seeking to become the rst openly gay man elected to the
Delaware legislature remains hopeful he will make history on Election Day.
People are responding overwhelmingly, Andy Staton told the Washington Blade,
referring to his campaigns television advertisements that detail what he described as an
action plan to preserve southern Delawares quality of life.
Staton told the Blade 100 volunteers have signed up to work with his campaign over
the last several weeks. Forty people also attended a recent brunch with Staton. Its been
absolutely amazing.
Staton on Nov. 6 will square off against Republican Ernie Lopez to represent the new 6th
Senate District that includes Dewey Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Milton. Staton
easily defeated former Dewey Beach Mayor Bob Frederick and former congressional
candidate Mike Miller in last months Democratic primary.
If elected, Staton could join lesbian state House candidate Marie Mayor in Dover if
she defeats Republican Stephen Smyk on Nov. 6. Mitch Crane, former president of the
Barbara Gittings Delaware Stonewall Democrats, last month narrowly lost his primary bid
to unseat incumbent Insurance Commissioner Karen Weldin Stewart.

Shooting suspect pleads not guilty to terrorism
Floyd Lee Corkins II, the Herndon, Va., man arrested in August for shooting a security guard
in the lobby of the anti-gay Family Research Council building in Washington, pleaded not
guilty in federal court on Oct. 26 to 10 charges led against him in a grand jury indictment.
The indictment, handed down Oct. 24, includes the charge of committing an act of
terrorism while armed, representing the rst time anyone has been prosecuted under
D.C.s Anti-Terrorism Act of 2002.
U.S. District Court Judge Richard Roberts scheduled a status hearing for Dec. 3 and
left in place an order issued at the time of Corkins arrest holding him in custody while
he awaits trial.
Corkins, 28, a former part-time volunteer for D.C.s LGBT community center, allegedly
shot the security guard in the arm seconds after he entered the FRC building at 801 G St.,
N.W., and told the guard, Leo Johnson, I dont like your politics.
D.C. police and the FBI arrested Corkins after Johnson wrestled the gun from him and
subdued him, according to an arrest afdavit.
D.C. and FBI ofcials said they discovered 50 rounds of ammunition and 15 Chick-l-A
sandwiches in a backpack Corkins brought to the FRC building, leading them to believe
Corkins may have planned a mass killing if Johnson had not prevented him from gaining
access to the FRC ofcers.
Some have speculated that Corkins targeted the FRC because of its anti-gay positions.
But authorities have yet to disclose whether Corkins is gay or whether they identied his
motive for targeting the FRC.
The indictment charges Corkins with committing an act of terrorism while armed by
allegedly attempting to kill the security guard and other unnamed employees of the
Family Research Council, with the intent to intimidate and coerce a signicant portion of
the civil population of the District of Columbia and the United States.
The indictment incorporates three charges led against Corkins in August with seven
new offenses, including the terrorism charge. The other new charges include attempted
murder while armed, aggravated assault while armed, second-degree burglary while
armed, and three counts of possession of a rearm during a crime of violence.

AIDS Walk raises more than $800,000
The 26th annual AIDS Walk Washington has so far raised nearly $810,000 for the
ght against the epidemic.
Mayor Vincent Gray and Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton were
among the roughly 6,000 people who attended the event on Freedom Plaza
in downtown Washington on Oct. 27. NBC anchors Aaron Gilchrist and Eun
Yang emceed the AIDS Walk. Miles and Milaya Daniels, who are 20-months and
10-weeks-old respectively, served as this years grand marshals.
Don Blanchon, executive director of Whitman-Walker Health, told the Washington
Blade last week he feels this years AIDS Walk is different from those of previous
years because of the ongoing impact of the International AIDS Conference that
took place in D.C. in July. He reiterated this message after the event.
Theres more of a sense of optimism and hope coming out of the International
AIDS Conference, Blanchon told the Blade. What Saturday ultimately ended
up representing was it takes ... people to take action, to take responsibility for
themselves make sure they know their status and on the community level it takes
[awareness.] We did a lot on Saturday to raise a lot of awareness.

Reward in killing of New York activist
NEW YORK A reward is being offered for information in the killing of
Sunnyside Queens LGBT leader Lou Rispoli, who died after apparently being
attacked by two men he was seen with late on the night of Oct. 20.
Rispoli, 62 known for creating and delivering meals to HIV/AIDS hospice
patients married his partner of 31 years in 2011. Gay New York City Council
member Jimmy Van Bramer, whose district includes Sunnyside, announced
tearfully on Oct. 26 that Rispoli would be removed from life support, and that
police and the mayors ofce were offering a reward of $22,000 for information in
what would now be classied a homicide.
Gay City News reported that Rispoli was hit by a blunt object with such force
that neighbors who heard the assault but did not see it thought he had been
shot. An eyewitness says that Rispoli may have emerged from a car with the two
men at around 2 a.m. before the deadly assault took place, and that a third man
may have remained in the car to drive the two assailants away after the attack.
Lou was a proud gay man. He fought for full equality for our community, Van
Bramer said. But I dont know if he was attacked because he was a gay man.
This is a good and safe neighborhood where gay men and lesbians can walk the
streets and be who they are.

Pastor blames gay Americans for hurricane
PITTSBURGH Days before Hurricane Sandy had even made landfall on the

similar statements regarding Hurricanes Katrina and Irene, placed blame for the
storm on the growing acceptance of LGBT Americans.
It appears that God gave America 21 years to repent of interfering with His
prophetic plan for Israel; however, it has gotten worse under all the presidents
and especially Obama, Pastor John McTernan is quoted by Think Progress as
proclaiming. Obama is 100 percent behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has
vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem. Both candidates are pro-homosexual
and are behind the homosexual agenda. America is under political judgment and
the church does not know it!

Supreme Court to consider
marriage lawsuits
Set to review DOMA,
Prop 8 cases on Nov. 20
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The Supreme Court could decide next
month whether to review challenges to
Californias Proposition 8 and the Defense
of Marriage Act that would have an
immediate impact on same-sex couples
across the nation. The court announced
Monday that justices have scheduled
on Nov. 20 whether to consider lawsuits
challenging the measures.
According to the Supreme Courts
website, justices have docketed the case
of Hollingsworth v. Perry, the lawsuit
contesting Prop 8, for their conference
on Nov. 20. Also docketed for that
conference are the four DOMA lawsuits
that were already pending before the
court: the consolidated case of Gill v.
Ofce of Personnel Management and
Commonwealth of Massachusetts v.
Department of Health & Human Services;
Windsor v. United States; Golinski v. Ofce
of Personnel Management; and Pedersen
v. Ofce of Personnel Management.
The courts decision on whether to
take up the Prop 8 case is particularly
signicant because if justices declined
to do so, same-sex couples would be
able to marry again in California almost
immediately just as soon as the U.S. Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals issues a mandate
saying its earlier ruling striking down the
amendment is now in effect.
According to the American Foundation
for Equal Rights, which led the lawsuit
against Prop 8, the Supreme Court is
expected to issue an order list detailing its
decisions on cases it has granted or denied
review on this conference by Nov. 26.
It takes a vote of four justices to grant
a writ of certiorari (to take up a case) but
the decision will be put off if any one
justice wants more time to decide. The
Supreme Court had previously docketed
the Prop 8 case, which was led by AFER,
and the Windsor challenge against
DOMA for their Sept. 20 conference, but
didnt make a decision on those lawsuits
at that time.
Its possible that justices could continue
to hold off on issuing a decision, although
legal observers have said they were likely
waiting until all the DOMA cases and
the Prop 8 case were fully briefed before
making a decision and are more likely to
do so at this time.
Adam Umhoefer, AFERs executive
director, said in a statement the courts
decision to schedule the Perry case for
Nov. 20 brings same-sex couples in the
Golden State once step closer to enjoying
the right to marry.
For far too long, gay and lesbian
couples in California have been waiting
to exercise the fundamental freedom to
marry that the United States Constitution
already tells them they have, Umhoefer
said. With the distribution of our case for
the courts consideration, we move one
step closer to the day when the nation will
be able to live up to the promise of liberty
and equality enshrined in our constitution,
and all Americans will be able to marry the
person they love.
If the court decides to take up the
Prop 8 case, justices will evaluate
whether the state constitutional ban
on same-sex marriage violates equal
protection afforded under the Fourteenth
Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
The situation with DOMA is slightly
different because advocates say justices
are widely expected to take up at least
one case challenging the anti-gay law,
which prohibits federal recognition of
same-sex marriage, to make a nationwide
ruling on the statute.
The courts decision to docket the case
for the Nov. 20 comes on the heels of a
ling from the Obama administration last
week in which the Justice Department
called on the court to make the Windsor
case its priority among other cases
challenging DOMA.
In that case, the U.S. Second Circuit
Court of Appeals became the rst
appellate court to determine that DOMA
is unconstitutional by applying a more
rigorous standard of heightened scrutiny
in evaluating the law.
But the marriage cases arent the only
LGBT-related cases that the Supreme
Court has docketed for its Nov. 20
conference. Justices have also scheduled
whether to take up Arizona Gov. Jan
Brewers (R) appeal of an federal district
court injunction prohibiting her from
enforcing a law that took away domestic
partner benets from state employees.
The case is called Brewer v. Diaz.

We dodged the
bullet here
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. &
MICHAEL K. LAVERS
The devastation unleashed by Hurricane
Sandy along the Atlantic coast between
Virginia and New York bypassed Rehoboth
Beach on Monday, generating a collective
sigh of relief from residents and businesses
in the Delaware resort town thats popular
with the LGBT community in the D.C. and
Baltimore area.
Were very, very fortunate down here in
Rehoboth Beach, the towns police chief,
Keith Banks, told the Blade on Tuesday.
What we have is minor debris and some
trees down, said Banks. Weve got sand
across the boardwalk, sand in the roadways,
and some sand erosion and breaches in
some of the dune areas. Some gutters were
off and some shingles were down, he said.
But overall, we made out very well.
Banks said Rehoboth Mayor Sam
Cooper lifted an evacuation order
requiring all businesses to close and all
residents in the downtown area to leave as
the storm approached.
He said he was aware of no damage
to homes or businesses on Baltimore
Avenue on the second block beyond the
boardwalk, where the LGBT community
center Camp Rehoboth, the Proud LGBT
bookstore and two gay bars are located.
Gay Democratic activist Peter Schott, who
lives just outside the Rehoboth town limits,
concurred with Banks assessment. He said
he ventured out early Tuesday evening.
I was surprised about how little damage
there was while driving around, said
Schott. Businesses were open and people
were out. We dodged the bullet here.
Schott said the electric power went out
in his neighborhood for about nine hours
on Monday night.
In D.C., Sandy brought heavy rain and
sustained winds and closed schools and
the federal government. Minor damage
was reported but nothing compared to the
deluge that hit New York. The New York
Stock Exchange closed for two days and
schools remained closed as of Wednesday.
Sandy also caused widespread damage to
New Yorks gay-popular Fire Island.
The National Weather Service reported
seven homes in Davis Park, which is Fire
Islands easternmost community, washed
out to sea during high tide on Monday
night. A reghter in Ocean Beach,
a village with roughly 150 year-round
residents to the west of the gay resorts of
Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines, told
the Washington Blade the storm damaged
or destroyed up to 40 oceanfront homes.

Rehoboth avoids major damage from Sandy
Robinson says she
had to deny truths
to continue service
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Two organizations dedicated to
assisting LGBT service members have
merged to take on the issues of the post-
Dont Ask, Dont Tell military and have
designated a new leader who personies
a lingering inequity that remains for the
armed forces.
OutServe-SLDN named as its new
executive director Allyson Robinson
a 1994 graduate of the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point who, as an Army
ofcer, commanded PATRIOT missile units
in Europe and the Middle East as it
ofcially completed its merger last week
at its International Leadership Conference
in Orlando, Fla.
The Scranton, Pa., native is a
transgender veteran and the only openly
transgender head of a major national
organization dedicated to serving the
LGBT community.
Speaking to the Washington Blade from
the conference last week, Robinson said
she didnt transition until she left active
duty, but still felt like she had to deny
truths about herself during her service.
I came from a military family and had
that value of service above self, or service
to the country that has given me so much,
Robinson said. I had that value ingrained
in me from the time I was a child. To be in
a position in order to carry out that value,
I had to violate another value that I held
very deeply that value of honestly and
integrity. It was an ugly thing.
Robinson said she didnt identify as
transgender while in service during the
1990s because at that time, she wasnt
aware of the terminology to describe her
gender identity, although she was aware
of pioneering leaders in the movement.
I didnt have language for what I
experienced, or what my identity was
because much of the language that we
use today didnt exist, Robinson said.
But clearly, to steer into the heart of your
question, I knew who I was. And I knew
that in order to keep my career, and to
serve the country I love, that I had to deny
who I was.
Unlike Dont Ask, Dont Tell, which
was a law passed by Congress in 1993 to
prevent openly gay people from serving
in the military, the prohibition on openly
transgender service is administrative.
Those who identify as transgender are
forced to take a medical discharge.
Robinson emphasized the difculties
that transgender people experience in
concealing their identity while serving in
the military.
And in many ways, its even worse than
the Dont Ask, Dont Tell military because
there is no Dont Ask, Dont Tell,
Robinson added. People in the chain of
command are completely authorized to
ask, and if you dont respond truthfully
if you perjure yourself then there are
penalties for that.
Much in the same way LGBT advocates
pointed to allied nations that allowed openly
gay service during the effort to repeal Dont
Ask, Dont Tell, Robinson said several
allied countries have implemented openly
transgender service with no adverse impact,
including the United Kingdom, Great Britain
and Australia.
Most recently, Robinson was the deputy
director for employee programs at the
HRC Foundation and drove the curricula
designed to improve LGBT cultural
competence in the workplace. She and
her wife of 18 years live with their four
children in Gaithersburg, Md.
Openly transgender service is but one
of many goals that Robinson has said she
wants to pursue as head of OutServe-SLDN.
Also on the docket: getting the Pentagon
to make an administrative change so gay
service members with same-sex partners
can obtain certain benets; repeal of the
Defense of Marriage Act so gay service
members can offer health and pension
benets to their same-sex spouses; growth
of the network of service members formerly
under OutServe; and continuing to provide
legal services to gay service members.

10 NOVEMBER 02, 2012 WASHI NGTONBLADE. COM
In May, PRESIDENT OBAMA
ended his 19-month
evolution and expressed
his support for marriage
rights for gay couples.
MITT ROMNEY has said he
opposes same-sex marriage
as well as civil unions that offer
the same legal benets of
marriage. Hes campaigned on
support for a Federal Marriage
Amendment, saying states
shouldnt have different rules
with respect to marriage.
Obama endorsed legislation
that would repeal the Defense
of Marriage Act known as the
Respect for Marriage Act. The
Obama administration also no
longer defends the Defense
of Marriage Act in court and
has said laws related to sexual
orientation should be subjected
to heightened scrutiny.
Romney supports DOMA
and has pledged to resume
defending the law in court
should he win the White House.
In 2010, Obama signed
legislation to repeal Dont Ask,
Dont Tell, which was lifted
from the books nearly a year
later following certication. Still,
openly transgender service is
prohibited and the Pentagon
has yet to make administrative
changes to afford certain
benets to gay service members
with same-sex partners.
Romney once expressed
support for Dont Ask, Dont
Tell, but his most recent
statement on the issue, made
December 2011, is that he
doesnt plan to return to that
policy now that the law has
been repealed.
The Obama administration
has taken steps to ensure bi-
national same-sex couples can
stay together in the United
States most recently issuing
a memorandum saying foreign
nationals without legal status in
same-sex relationships should be
low priority for deportation cases.
The White House has suggested
Obama wants to include
language for bi-national couples
in comprehensive immigration
reform. Obama has yet to
endorse the Uniting American
Families Act, but has expressed
support for its general principles.
Romney hasnt publicly
addressed the issue of bi-
national same-sex couples, but
has said he supports no amnesty
for undocumented immigrants
and wants to impose a policy
where immigrants without legal
status will want to self-deport.
Obama is a long-time
supporter of ENDA, but
the White House said he
wont issue at this time an
executive order barring federal
contractors from discriminating
on the basis of sexual
orientation and gender identity.
Romneys last stated position on
ENDA was in 2007 when he said
states could implement workplace
non-discrimination policies
related to sexual orientation,
but he doesnt support federal
legislation. He hasnt addressed
the legislation over the course of
the 2012 campaign.
Natl polls tied up as
Obama, Romney
make nal push
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
With less than one week remaining
before the election, LGBT political
observers say the outcome of the
presidential race remains hard to predict
as polls show a tight race and the
candidates make their nal push.
President Obama and Republican
presidential nominee Mitt Romney are
within a few points of each other in a
national polls and virtually tied up in key
battleground states, such as Colorado,
Ohio, Virginia and Florida.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll
published on Sunday gave Romney a one-
point lead over Obama among likely voters.
Conversely, a CBS News/New York Times
poll issued on Tuesday gave Obama a
one-point advantage over Romney. A Pew
Research Center poll published on Monday
says the race is dead even at 47-47.
Robert Dion, whos gay and a political
scientist at the University of Evansville,
said the candidate wholl win remains
unclear, but a Romney victory is not the
most likely outcome right now.
Obama has had all kinds of weaknesses
and shortcomings that have been revealed
this year that make him less likely to win a
romp, but hes got a sophisticated team
behind him, Dion said. So this will not
be 2008. Theres no euphoric sentiment
across the country. ... Theres no soaring
rhetoric, but theyre just going to, as they
keep saying, grind it out.
LGBT political groups involved with the
presidential campaign had expectations
about the election that bolstered the
candidates theyre supporting.
Jerame Davis, executive director of the
National Stonewall Democrats, expressed
condence that Obama would win based on
a consistent but small lead hes enjoyed in the
polls in the months preceding Election Day.
Polling has been pretty consistent that
Obama has a slight edge particularly
in the battleground states, Davis said. I
think the electoral math works in our favor
and Obama maybe doesnt have room to
be condent in a victory, but probably isnt
sweating bullets.
Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of
the gay conservative group GOProud,
wouldnt write off Romney so easily and
said more states are coming into play as
Election Day approaches.
The Romney campaign is in fact
announcing television ad buys in Minnesota
and Pennsylvania just during the last few
days, and all the national polling shows
the race essentially tied, LaSalvia said.
That wasnt the case six weeks ago. Gov.
Romney has gained a signicant amount of
ground in the last six weeks.
While LGBT issues have received scant
attention during the presidential race
notably not a single LGBT question came up
during the presidential debates this week
Romneys opposition to same-sex couples
raising children came up as a result of a 2005
video that surfaced of him speaking before a
South Carolina fundraiser.
Today, same-sex couples are marrying
under the law in Massachusetts; some are
actually having children born to them,
Romney said at the time. Weve been asked
to change their birth certicates to remove the
phrase mother and father and replace it with
Parent A and Parent B. Its not right on paper;
its not right in fact. Every child has the right to
have a mother and a father.
Romneys remarks are consistent with
his actions as governor of Massachusetts,
when, according to a Boston Globe report
from last week, he rejected a plan to
relabel birth certicates for the children
and instead and required ofcials to
receive consent on an individual basis
from Romneys lawyers to scratch out
father on the certicates and handwrite
second parent in ink.
The views expressed in the video would
be in line with Romneys support for a
U.S. constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage and pledge to resume
defending in court the Defense of Marriage
Act, which prohibits federal recognition of
same-sex marriage. Obama, on the other
hand, came out for marriage equality
in May and has instructed his Justice
Department to stop defending DOMA.
One new factor thats coming into play
in the election is the expansion of early
voting, which is now allowed in 32 states
and has allowed more than 12.3 million
Americans to cast their ballots in the
election. According to a report published
Monday by Gallup, an estimated 15
percent of voters have already cast
their ballots via early voting, and the
breakdown gives Romney a lead among
these voters, 52-46.
Another event that may have an impact
on the presidential race is Hurricane
Sandy, which lashed the East Coast a
week before the election and was blamed
for at least 11 deaths and 2.8 million
power outages.
President Obama took leave from his
campaign on Tuesday to thank Red Cross
workers and tour the damage in New
Jersey with Gov. Chris Christie. Romney
held an event in Ohio where he encouraged
people to deliver goods and supplies for
people in New Jersey, although media
outlets criticized him for taking this action,
saying the Red Cross policy is to accept
donations and not supplies.

Baldwin seeks to become
rst openly gay senator
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A record number of openly gay candidates running for Congress
will face their critical test on Tuesday as many including U.S. Senate
candidate Tammy Baldwin are seeing polls tighten as Election Day
approaches.
A total of nine openly gay, lesbian and bisexual candidates are
seeking ofce in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate. With the retirement
of gay Rep. Barney Frank, openly LGBT representation in Congress
will look very different after next week.
Baldwins race is the most high-prole among these candidates
because shed be the rst openly gay person elected to the U.S.
Senate and the outcome of the race against Republican former
Gov. Tommy Thompson may determine which party controls the
chamber after the election.
Denis Dison, a spokesperson for the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund,
said all eyes will be on the race because following the spike in polls
that Baldwin enjoyed after her speech at the Democratic National
Convention the contest has become increasingly high-prole and
competitive due to spending from outside conservative groups.
I know groups like Karl Roves Crossroads GPS and Americans for
Prosperity also the U.S. Chamber [of Commerce] I think the
total amount is about $13 million they have spent on ads attacking
Tammy, Dison said. That has caused the race to get very close.
For her part, Baldwin made public on Oct. 30 her closing TV ad showing
workers and families as well as footage of her campaigning with former
President Bill Clinton.
One big difference between Tammy Baldwin and Tommy
Thompson is that she stood up to the special interests, and hes
stood up for them, Clinton says in a voice over. If you put people
rst, it works better than trickle-down economics.
Another race that will be closely watched is Massachusetts 9th
congressional district where gay Republican challenger Richard
Tisei seems poised to beat Democratic incumbent Rep. John Tierney.
New Yorks 18th congressional district is another race of interest to
the LGBT community. Gay Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney is seeking
to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Nan Hayworth, who has a pro-LGBT
record in Congress and the backing of gay conservative groups.
In a statement to the Washington Blade, Maloney said the LGBT
community should rally behind him because Hayworth has aligned
herself with conservative groups.
Tea Party Congresswoman Nan Hayworth doesnt believe that my
family is equal to hers or that members of the LGBT community deserve
equal protection under the law, Maloney said. I think folks around the
country, LGBT and otherwise, are tired of this extreme ideology.

New Logan Circle gastropub
finds retro inspiration
By JONATHAN HOWARD
Ever since Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury
Confections (ACKC) closed on 14
th
Street this year Ive been peeking in the
windows of the space to see what may be
happening there. A couple of months ago
a visible transformation began occurring
and The Drafting Table (1529C 14
th
Street)
was slowly revealed to the Logan Circle
neighborhood.
Originally, The Drafting Table was
supposed to be named Woody Creek, the
name proposed by the winner of a Going
Out Guide poll and agreed upon by
owner Aaron Gordon. However, Gordons
primary designer, Andrew Christenberry
stumbled upon mid-20
th
century drafting
tables while searching for furniture for
the space and the theme was completely
overhauled. Now the space is full of sleek
warm wooden drafting tables and chairs
and the theme trickles all the way down to
the menus, which are printed on drafting
paper. One of the most dramatic elements
is the six foot handcrafted wooden
architecture compass mounted to the wall
that Gordon says was, completely his
[Christenberrys] idea. He thought of it, he
built it by hand and it complements the
space perfectly.
My introduction to the atmosphere and
food of The Drafting Table was at its media
event on Oct. 16. We were assigned tables
with platters full of food featuring their
pickled veggies with Greek green goddess
dressing and their chacuterie plate.
We then had time to mingle with other
food writers (in between taking photos
of the food) and sample beers from their
in-depth list. As we were seated, a very
interesting dish was presented to us
the Kaya Toast, which many of my fellow
writers had already been talking about. It
has the makings of a signature dish for this
neighborhood gastro pub with its thick
and crusty toast, rich sweet coconut jam
and creamy egg cooked sunny side up
and served on a plate with soy broth that
introduces saltiness to the mix. Make sure
to mix it all together in order to experience
the full range of avors. This is denitely a
dont-knock-it-til-youve-tried-it dish.
Following the appetizers we were
offered our choice of the draftsman
burger, the herb roasted chicken or the
falafel. All of us at the table made sure that
the three dishes would be represented
and we passed them around so we could
try them. The plates put together by head
chef, Ciji Wagner, were strong and well
balanced. Then it was time for dessert and
chocolate puddin, grilled pound cake
and homemade Snickers pie all made
their way to the table. The chocolate
puddin was the strongest of these three,
but that may just be the comfort factor
talking, since it reminded me of a Jell-O
Puddin Pop.
I left the media dinner satised, but
wondering what a non-media event would
be like at The Drafting Table, so a few
days later I returned for brunch with my
husband. The brunch was much more laid
back with tables full of people relaxing
instead of rushing. The wait staff also
moved at a more relaxed pace.
I was disappointed to see no unlimited
mimosa on the brunch menu, but
the rest of the menu seemed to offer
typical brunch fare. The sexy breakfast
sandwich caught my eye and Greg chose
the French toast with apple compote,
which he described as good, just not
great. I was blown away by my breakfast
sandwich, which turned out to me more
messy than sexy, but tasty nonetheless.
The sunny side up eggs were avored by
the herb aioli and warmed by a healthy
portion of roasted red peppers, then
some prosciutto was piled on top and I
was in heaven.
As Gordon said, People love
something new in the neighborhood and
they seem to be enjoying The Drafting
Table as their new neighborhood pub.
The Drafting Table is an excellent addition
to Logan Circle offering an eclectic mix of
pub food and beers. This is one of the rst
(of many) welcome additions soon coming
to the 14
th
Street corridor for lunch, dinner,
snacks and brunch.

Healthy living choices
become more important
as we get into our 50s
and beyond
I am technically not a Baby Boomer, but
I am less than four years away from 50.
Everyone fears aging to a degree, even
personal trainers. I have spent the last 15
years specializing in exercising with older
adults and have gained some insights into
the fears that the aging population faces.
What sparked todays column was when I
answered a Linked In question asking what is
the biggest fear facing Baby Boomers today?
The answer I gave was loss of independence.
According to the History Channels web
site (history.com), Baby Boomers account for
76 million people born between the years
1946-1964. However, older adults in general
are considered age 50 and above by AARP.
They are the fastest-growing population
in this country and are ocking to gyms in
greater numbers and they are taking a more
active role in managing their health.
With aging comes many valid fears and
concerns and their biggest is relying on
others and not being able to do everything
that they have been doing on their own.
Loss of independence can include loss of
nancial stability, friendship, family and
community losses and mental and physical
health issues. All wrapped up in these
fears are such issues as declining health,
social security, Medicare and Alzheimers
disease to name a few.
What can be done to allay these fears? Ill
focus on the health aspect. From an overall
health standpoint there are many ways to
stave off or manage declining health. While
most of these apply to all populations, they
are more essential as we age.
Keep active. I always recommend an
established and consistent exercise plan
about three times per week. If you are
new to the gym, hire a professional who
specializes with older adults to teach
you what you need to know. If getting
out of your home is difcult there are
many personal trainers who will come
to your house. Do as many of your daily
activities on your own as you can things
like taking the stairs, carrying groceries,
gardening, etc. Move more and as often
as you can. The body hates immobility.
Eat well. Cover the basics and consume
a combination of complex carbohydrates,
lean protein and limited amounts of fat.
Keep white products to a minimum such as
salt, white our, white rice and sugar. They
have little nutritive value, can cause weight
gain or lead to diabetes. If you are lacking
in certain nutrients, check with your doctor
on supplementation. Remember to stay
well hydrated and consume plenty of water.
Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is
prevalent in every population including
older adults. If you have excess weight,
particularly around your mid-section, do
what you can to lose it. Excess weight is
associated with numerous health risks from
increased risk of heart disease, stroke, lower
back issues and knee and joint problems.
Regular health screenings. This is the
most essential and covers several areas.
Visit your doctor or practitioner once a
year and have a managed care plan into
place. Being pro-active and not waiting
until sickness or disease occurs can make
all the difference.
Be able to rely on a doctor who is fully
versed on the health needs and fears
associated with aging. Remember to
include dental, vision and hearing as part of
your regular check-up schedule. And be sure
to nd a competent pharmacist when taking
all medications who can oversee and be
aware of drug interactions. Also, remember
to get regular skin cancer screenings and if
mental health is a concern, ask your doctor
for a referral to a mental health specialist.
Manage stress. I have talked in previous
columns about what unmanaged stress can
do to our mental and physical well-being.
Too much stress can wreak havoc on the body
and weigh heavily on our minds. Older adults
have far more concerns and worries than most
people. Surround yourself with a community
and support network that can help allay your
stress and eliminate or manage those areas
that are causing you stress. Eating well and
exercise are two proven ways to best alleviate
stress. If stress cant be managed seek out a
professional who can help.
Tomorrow is promised to no one, but
doing what one can today for your health
will make tomorrow easier.

Pointers on D.C.s new use
tax
By JAMES N. MARKELS
Business owners in D.C. may have
been surprised to get a notice in the mail
last September informing them of a new
retroactive use tax now owed on cer-
tain goods and services bought outside
of the District, courtesy of the Fiscal Year
2013 Budget Support Act of 2012 enact-
ed on June 22. For businesses that had
not previously obtained a use tax ID num-
ber, the notice also included an assigned
number. The tax is not tricky, but there
are some nuances of which business own-
ers should be aware.
The tax applies to purchases of goods
and services used by a business that were
not otherwise subject to a sales tax in
D.C. or another state the typical ex-
ample being online purchases such as
Amazon, wine sellers and other similar
online shopping sites. The use tax is paid
through the Form FR-800A (led annually
on Oct. 20) or FR-800Q (quarterly, de-
pending on the amount of tax incurred),
which also cover sales taxes. These forms
are available online, and if a businesss
use tax liability is over $10,000 per period,
it will have to le and pay electronically.
Generally, covered purchases are taxed
at a six percent rate, although some pur-
chases, like alcohol, food and tobacco
products, are taxed at a higher rate just
like sales taxes on those types of items.
Importantly, the use tax only applies
to employers if an individual is self-
employed or is otherwise not obligated
to le a payroll withholding return in D.C.,
the business will not be subject to the
tax, even if it received the use tax notice.
Businesses in this situation should inform
the D.C. Ofce of Tax and Revenue of
that fact and request that its use tax ac-
count be cancelled.
The use tax also does not apply to
those businesses that are currently re-
quired to collect and remit sales tax. In
other words, this tax primarily hits doc-
tors, lawyers, accountants, consultants,
and others who provide professional ser-
vices in the District of Columbia that are
not subject to sales taxes.
Another important caveat is that the
use tax only applies to those goods and
services used, stored or consumed in
the District. For example, if the D.C. of-
ce of a business orders a book online
for delivery to a Maryland ofce for use
there, the District use tax does not ap-
ply. However, the same book purchased
by the Maryland ofce but delivered to
the District would be subject to the use
tax. What matters is the delivery location
of the purchased goods or services, not
the location from where the goods or ser-
vices are ordered.
There are other exceptions to the use
tax under federal and state laws that are
largely similar to the exceptions for sales
taxes. If the product or service you pur-
chased is not subject to sales tax, it likely
is not subject to the use tax either. The
use tax, after all, is intended to act as a
