The early snowfall may have some peo-
ple wondering what that means for the
Towns snowfall removal budget. Fortu-
nately the warmer weather last winter
kept the costs down which helps with re-
moval now.
We operate on a calendar year bud-
get so in essence we dont start the 2013
budget until after January 1, so were still
using the 2012 budget, said Jesse Parker,
director of engineering and operations for
the town.
Because we had a very light winter in
the spring or in January to March of 2012
we basically used very little of the 2012
budget.
Contracted services were not needed
until this most recent snowfall, which has
left the town with money to work with.
Parker said if it had been a tough winter
then they probably would have needed to
request extra funds. The snow is predicted
to stay, however, which could mean bud-
getary issues in 2013.
Were taking some steps to try and
manage the budget and weve made some
changes in our removal strategies. Most of
our budget is for contracted services be-
cause we have a very limited feet of ve-
hicles and equipment, said Parker.
Weve taken some steps where weve
changed the policy, were doing more
plowing than removal and we do a lot of
the plowing ourselves. So were pushing
snow over to the sides of the roads and
then when its not as busy, and its easier
for us to remove snow, then we can do
that at our own pace.
If we have a major snowfall then re-
moval becomes a bit more of a priority
but, similar to this most recent snowfall,
we were able to do a lot of plowing. We
only removed from a couple of problem
areas here that we have.
One example is Centre St. where the
snow cant be pushed to the side because
of the vehicles parking there. Parker thinks
the crews have done very well especially
considering the snow came earlier than
usual and they didnt have any practice
runs. Parker feels there is still room for
improvement but he thinks all in all they
have done very well.

The Strathmore and District Chamber
of Commerce held their annual Busi-
ness Awards Gala on Oct. 25. Since be-
ing reintroduced to the community in
2010 the awards gala has grown sub-
stantially. This year 167 people attend-
ed the evening at the Travelodge. More
and more businesses and community
members are getting on board to nomi-
nate and attend the awards.
I was thrilled this year with the
number of nominations that we re-
ceived and then the number of people
that made the effort to come out to the
night of, said Lin Walker, secretary for
the Chamber.
Great businesses just dont get rec-
ognized enough. Whenever theres
somebody that does something wrong
we hear about it, if somebody gets bad
service or whatever we hear about it,
but theres more great businesses in
Strathmore and area.
Among the nominations, several
were from Standard, Gleichen and
Carseland. The emphasis is on the fact
the awards, and the Chamber itself, are
for Strathmore and area and this year it
seems people have begun to embrace
that.
Walker thinks people have jumped
back on the bandwagon of recogniz-
ing great businesses, good service, and
people who give back to the commu-
nity, whether as a business or an orga-
nization.
Next year Walker hopes to see the
awards night take place on the Sat-
urday night of Small Business Week,
which will be Oct. 20, 2013.
The reason for that change up is
sometimes its hard for businesses to
get there on a weeknight and also if we
have it on a Saturday we could, once
the awards were fnished, we could
then have a dance or some entertain-
ment, said Walker.
Out of the 72 nominations, eight
winners were picked. The Commu-
nity Spirit business award went to All
Genres DJ Services; the Community
Spirit organization award went to the
Celebration of Lights Christmas Tree
Park. The emerging entrepreneur was
awarded to the Quality Canine Center.
Business of the Year for small busi-
nesses went to Daisy Recycling, the
medium business award went to Joeys
Only and the large business of the year
award went to Days Inn & Suites. The
Employer of Choice is the Roadhouse
and the Chamber Member of the Year
is Chinook Credit Union.

Laughter can cheer a person up after
a gloomy day, which is why the Magi-
cal Moms Relay for Life team is bring-
ing back the Boob Tour for a second
year.
The Boob Tour began with James
Uloth. When he was 16 a friends mom
passed away from breast cancer. It left
such an impact on him that he knew
he had to do something to help raise
funds for cancer. It didnt take long for
him to realize he could combine his
desire to fundraise with his comedy
routine and thus the Boob Tour was
created.
Originally the Boob Tour had ap-
proached the Relay for Life looking for
teams who would be interested in do-
ing it and weve always done one kind
of major fundraiser so we thought that
we would try that to be our major fun-
Boob Tour returns to Strathmore
draiser for our team and it just worked
out really well. Its the laughter part
of it, its fun and everyone just wants
to come out and laugh, said Shelly
Marshman-Neal, a Magical Moms team
member.
Its just a really fun way to get out
and support those with cancer. Its
a great opportunity to raise funds
to support not just the research, but
the people that have cancer and raise
money for them.
Tickets are on sale for $30 each, and
people are being encouraged to pre-
purchase their tickets. There will be
a silent auction, and 50/50 as well as
snacks and a cash bar.
Lamont Ferguson, who has opened
for George Carlin and Bill Cosby in the
past, will be the headliner of the night.
The other comedians include Ro Delle
Grazie and, of course, James Ultoh.
I think everyone on our team has
had someone close to us thats had
cancer, fought cancer. Weve all been
affected somehow, said Marshman-
Neal.
What better way to show your sup-
port than to do so by busting a gut
with good company?
The show takes place Nov. 9 at the
Civic Centre. The doors open at 7 p.m.
and the show begins at 8 p.m. There
are a total of 300 tickets available. Any-
one who books a table of eight can
have the table reserved for them. All of
the proceeds go to the Canadian Can-
cer Society.

The Carseland Public Beneft Club
will be hosting Dr. Nanci Langford on
Wednesday, Nov. 7 for an evening of
learning about the history Albertas
women have left.
Langford has been involved with
womens archives since 1989, and her
experience in womens history has
made her more knowledgeable and
allowed her to experience more, es-
pecially with the barriers that come
up when women share their sto-
ries.
I certainly feel that I can address
some of the concerns that women
have, that they have taught me over the
years, Langford says.
Langford says she plans to start the
evening with discussing the early years.
I want to go back and refect on that
period in Alberta with some stories
about some of the women who settled
during that period, says Langford,
who also wants to talk about the need
for organization during that time.
However, Langford also wants to
talk about new issues, such as preserv-
ing past and present histories. She
wants to talk about why [preserva-
tion] is important and how it can be
done and address some of the feel-
ings and barriers that the community
may have.
I felt quite honoured and excited
about another opportunity to take this
message to another group of women,
says Langford of being asked to speak.
Your papers are important, your
photographs are important, says Lang-
ford, who is looking forward to show-
ing the community why their history is
relevant as well.
[Youre] welcome to share your own
experiences, and your own questions,
says Langford, and urges people who
may be curious about the evening to
come and listen.
This isnt just sitting and listening
to somebody tell them whats what, its
going to be a chance for them to ad-
dress their own concerns and interests
in preserving their families stories or
their own stories.
The speech will be held on Wednes-
day, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carse-
land Jet Setters Room. Admission is a
cash or food donation for the Veterans
Food Bank. Please RSVP at 403-934-
6077 or fordrg@platinum.ca so refresh-
ments can be prepared accordingly.

The best way of ensuring you reach your weight-
loss goals is to keep a food journal. Its really
diffcult to make changes in your diet if you arent
keeping track of what you are eating. Two other
hints about losing weight are: dont skip meals
and try not to eat out for lunch more than once per
week.
Health Canadas website (healthcanada.gc.ca) has a

Quite interesting!
Pharmacists often hear the complaint, My cold
just wont go away. Ive had it for a month! Cold
generally last for 7-14 days. So if it lasts longer,
you may be a secondary infection happening. It
could be sinusitis, an ear infection or even a lung
condition. See your doctor to be sure.
World Diabetes Day is on November 14. The
slogan for this years campaign is Diabetes: Protect
Our Future. The main message of this campaign is
to highlight the fact that the way we live is putting
our health at risk. Also, access to essential
education about diabetes is available for everyone.
Its as near as our pharmacy.
Make our pharmacy your healthcare centre.

Exploring Canada through Encounters
Shannon LeCLair

Encounters with Canada is a youth
forum based in Ottawa, Ontario that
brings teens together form across the
country. The teens, ages 14 to 17, get
a chance to learn more about an area
that interests them, while meeting
other students with similar interests.
They can explore different career op-
tions, develop leadership skills, learn
more about Canada and participate in
a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Strathmore High School had 10 stu-
dents who attended Encounters with
Canada in September.
Katherine Hatton and Kenny Le May
both attended the Arts and Culture
week. Le May picked the week be-
cause he is a drummer and wanted to
learn more about music.
There was a djembe instructor so
that was pretty cool, and I learned
some different arts like there was some
dancing and acting. There was African
dancing and break dancing that I went
to and that was pretty fun, said Le
May.
I love art and I wanted to just ex-
perience a different form of it instead
of just drawing on paper, said Hatton.
I learned a lot about myself and why
Im so proud to be Canadian. I learned
a lot about art and I just learned about
how great a country Canada is.
Damilola Lawal, Ashley Suy Kens
and Mariah Wilson all attended the
Medicine and Health forum.
I learned a lot of health-related stuff
and I learned a lot about Canada be-
cause I defnitely did not know that
much, I just moved here a year ago.
I learned about the Parliament and I
learned that I could make 120 friends
in a week, I never thought that was
possible, said Lawal, who originally
hails from Nigeria.
The week was flled with many ex-
citing moments, tours, and really in-

triguing information about
the Medical feld. I met lots
of new friends and Ive dear-
ly missed them since arriv-
ing home. Probably my most
favourite part of Encounters
was being able to meet stu-
dents from all across Canada
who shared the same inter-
ests, passions, and views
that I have, said Wilson, by
email.
Even being able to travel
to Ottawa was such a thrill-
ing and rewarding experi-
ence. Discovering the true
beauties of country and the
citizens within it, has given
me a new found sense of
pride to be Canadian.
Suy Kens wants to one day
work in the medical feld and
said she found it interesting
that, everyone from across
Canada is pretty much the
same. Meeting new people
and seeing so many maple
leaves was her favourite part
of the trip.
Devyn Millette chose the
Science and Technology fo-
rum. Her favourite subject
is biology and after becom-
ing intrigued by technology
last year it was a perfect ft.
She learned how to identify
bacteria, some new French
words and made a ton of
friends.
The fnal four students to
attend Encounters with Can-
ada took part in the Sports
and Fitness week.
I just like sports and I
do pretty good in them so
I thought that would be the
best theme for me to go to,
said Ben Scott, who skis and
plays badminton.
I learned that everyone
from Canada is a lot alike,
more alike than I thought
they would be. I thought ev-
eryone would be different
but were actually all pretty
similar, except for people
from Newfoundland, theyre
really different.
I actually learned a lot
more about Canada and
about being bilingual as a
country, said Rachel Reder-
burg.
For Avery Johnson, the
biggest thing she learned
is just how alike our fellow
Canadians are, even though
we are living in different
provinces, something many
of her fellow Encounters at-
tendees agreed with.
I learned that even
though we are from the
same country we are all very
different yet very much the
same and I think we take
for granted not being able
to get a chance to see our
own country and meet other
people, said Rachel Cool.
I think its a once-in-a-life
time experience and I think
that (if you get) the oppor-
tunity, (and) get chosen,
youd be silly not to go be-
cause when are you ever go-
ing to get to do those things
again?
The things the teens en-
joyed the most were making
new friends, the experience,
the maple leaves and fall co-
lours, beaver tails, the archi-
tecture and the culture.

Implementing the Jobs and Growth Act, 2012
Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot
Parliamentary Report
As we approach the midway point of the Fall
Session of Parliament, the Honourable Jim Fla-
herty, Minister of Finance, has introduced in
the House of Commons Bill C-45, the Jobs and
Growth Act, 2012. The Act implements key initia-
tives from Economic Action Plan 2012 Budget
2012 that was debated and passed by Parlia-
ment last spring. Bill C-45 completes the work of
Budget 2012.
It is a large document because our Conserva-
tive government is doing a great deal with fed-
eral government policy to help grow Canadas
economy, fuel job creation and secure Canadas
long-term prosperity. I am spoke in the debate
on Tuesday and I argued that the large amount
of work that Budget 2012 calls for is the direct
response of our Conservative government to the
toughest economic times Canadian workers and
their families have faced in recent memory.
Canada has one of the strongest economic
performances in the G-7 and over 820,000 net
new jobs created since July 2009. However, the
global economy remains fragile, especially in Eu-
rope and the United States. Thats why we remain
focused on supporting the economy with a pro-
growth Budget.
We are focused on bolstering Canadas econo-
my to help improve communities with initiatives
that: create jobs; support families; promote clean
energy and improve the tax system for the energy
sector; and respect taxpayers dollars.
We are extending for one year the job-creating
Hiring Credit for Small Business, which beneft-
ted nearly 534,000 employers last year; promot-
ing interprovincial trade; improving the legislative
framework governing Canadas fnancial institu-
tions; facilitating cross-border travel; and, remov-
ing red tape for Canadian businesses.
For families and communities, Budget 2012: im-
proves Registered Disability Savings Plans; helps
Canadians save for retirement by implementing
the tax framework for Pooled Registered Pension
Plans; improves the administration of the Canada
Pension Plan; and strengthens the Canadian Envi-
ronmental Assessment Act, 2012.
To promote clean energy and enhance the tax
system for energy sector companies we are ex-
panding tax relief for investment in clean energy
generation equipment and phasing out tax pref-
erences for the mining and oil and gas sectors.
This will serve to treat the three more equally
across the energy sector.
Most of you will have already heard that last
week, the House of Commons passed the part
of Budget 2012 that changes the pension plans
for Members of Parliament, Senators and fed-
eral public sector employees. We severed those
measures from Bill C-45 and by unanimous con-
sent passed them through all stages of debate in
the House. This ensures that these pensions are
sustainable, fnancially responsible, and broadly
consistent with the pension products offered by
other jurisdictions as well as fair relative to those
offered in the private sector.
Ongoing global economic turbulence and
competition from emerging economies mean
the Government must act now to build a stron-
ger economy, says Minister Flaherty. Delaying
needed economic and fscal reforms would only
serve to lead Canada down the same road as the
troubled European and U.S. economies.

ing this or previous columns you may write me

To the Editor
Over the past few months there has been a fair
amount of discussion by a couple of town Council-
lors to rejuvenate and beautify the downtown core.
After reading the article on Oct. 17 by Denise Ger-
mina voicing her opinion on this matter, and I must
say I couldnt agree with her more, I thought I should
add my comments on this matter.
I understand that Councillors Bob Sobol and Rocky
Blokland have been advocating for sometime, a pro-
cess to revitalize and rejuvenate the downtown area.
This would certainly attract more interest for busi-
nesses to locate in the downtown area and in turn
attract more local and out of town shoppers.
This is certainly an opportunity to have a healthy
dialogue regarding the benefts of having a vital
downtown. We are growing into a city and as with
any growth and progress, which is good and neces-
sary, we also need to consider and appreciate how
our town evolved to what it is today. I think we
should preserve the character of what Strathmore is.
As we welcome new and expanding businesses and
big box stores in the outer areas, we should also be
open to a downtown beautifcation to see that it sur-
vives.
In regards to the contentious issue of parking
downtown, as I understand, the suggestion of park-
ing re-assignment from angle parking to parallel
parking, I feel this is a viable one. I understand that
only 37 parking spaces would be lost. Currently the
downtown area has a number of spacious parking
lots such as Kinsman Park and the Co-op just to
mention a couple. These are all within easy walking
distance of the main core of businesses. Besides, in
my opinion, angle parking has had its day. We now
have larger vehicles; extended cab trucks and vans
that impinge into driving lanes causing one to swerve
around them into the apposing lane and also back-
ing to exit around this vehicle is dangerous. Angle
parking was feasible when the population was much
smaller, now Strathmore is the size of a city and none
of the bigger communities have angle parking any-
more.
Without angle parking a median would be an at-
tractive addition with trees, shrubs, colourful green-
ery and perhaps with some antique looking light
standards. I think that would make a very attractive
boulevard and add to the vibrancy of downtown.
Just as sub-divisions are growing, so is the con-
struction of more duplexes and condos close to the
downtown core. It would be convenient for these
folks to just walk downtown to do their shopping for
all their necessities. Also we have a good number of
senior citizens that live in close proximity of down-
town and currently do their major shopping there. If
these services are not available to them, they will be
burdened with other means and added expenses to
do their shopping.
In our many travels locally and abroad, our best ex-
periences have been visiting many cities and towns.
The city centers were the main attractions and most
interesting to visit. It revealed the character and at-
mosphere of its community. We enjoyed walks, doing
local shopping, enjoying some local foods and drinks
and talking to locals. Oh, and by the way, there was
no parking in these areas, all the parking was a block
or two off the main shopping area.
I agree with Councillors Sobol and Bloklands ini-
tiative to jump start a project for a Downtown Beau-
tifcation project. We should all keep an open mind
and at least have a dialogue and see where things go
from here. So I say to all those that want to see our
downtown area grow and prosper, show your sup-
port, let them know you are on the same page with
them, dont let the downtown disappear!

Fule for Thought
Halloween is a strange time for me. Im not a big
fan of putting on a costume, I fnd it uncomfortable
in many ways. I dont know about you, but I always
feel that Trick or Treat yelled at me, at my front
door, sounds like a threat candy, or else!
One Halloween many years ago, we had a masked
man come right into our house and sit at the kitch-
en table. At frst, it was humorous, but as the time
dragged on, it became weird. We tried to downplay
it, but it was a very awkward situation. After a long
time, I said, okay, this has been fun, but who are
you?
The person just crossed his arms and continued to
sit. I have to admit, I got annoyed, and told him that
he had three choices: unmask, leave, or I call the
cops. He slowly left, and now 25 years later, we still
dont know who it was. Needless to say, Debbie was
a bit freaked out at the time! Sometimes weve even
thought about killing the lights to go see a movie
on Halloween Night!
I must admit though, scaring someone CAN be
a lot of fun! A few years ago, after visiting Debs
grandfather in Cochrane, we were getting set to
leave, when I had a brilliant idea. As Breanne and
her friend sat in the van, I snuck around to Brees
side, slammed the side window, and screamed as
loudly as I could (this was similar to my coyote
howl, and I (again) thought the kids were laugh-
ing). However, when I looked through the window,
Breanne was actually crying out of fear! Part of me
felt terrible, while the other part STILL found this
funny. I dont think I got any Father of the Year
points that day!
The same situation presented itself at the U. of
C. We had gone in to watch one of Brennens bas-
ketball games, and were leaving. I was sure Bre-
anne and her friend went ahead with our keys, to
the van. I stealthily snuck to the Silver Grand Car-
avan in the lot, threw open the drivers door and
again screamed a horrible scream! The strangers in
their OWN van jumped in fright, as they probably
thought I was some serial killer! Yes, I had stupidly
picked the WRONG van! I apologized profusely, but
they were too frightened to be able to reply! Im
sure they might have thought that THIS was going
to be their last night on Earth! My daughter and her
friend, of course, found this to be hilarious, as they
watched me apologize to these terrifed strangers!
Good one, Dad how old are you, again? asked
Breanne.
Back when I rented an apartment in university
with my friends, I had a similar event happen to me.
Kirk, who had been my friend since we were 10, was
a prankster I should have remembered this fact.
One night, I had stayed up later than him, and the
other roommate. All was black when I shut off the
TV and wandered down the hall to my room. From
NOWHERE (actually the closet), Kirk leaped out and
yelled! He HAD to have been hiding in the closet
for half an hour! I was absolutely terrifed! Luckily,
I was able to maintain control over the bladder, or
this would have been REALLY humiliating. Secretly
I vowed revenge. Some weeks later, I crawled under
his bed near the end of the night and waited
and waited . and waited. He fnally went to bed.
I reached up from under the bed and grabbed him,
while letting out a blood curdling scream. Yes, he
was scared, but recovered quickly enough to fgure
out that I was now trapped UNDER the bed! Any
time I tried to escape, I would be hit and smacked!
Finally, he let me go, and we actually struck a pact
to cut out the scaring whew!
Heres a fun thing to do if youre driving in the
dark near Strathmores cemetery. I was driving Bre-
anne and her friend to a bar from Wildfower. As we
got to the cemetery road, I zipped into the cemetery,
braked, and parked as fast as possible, shutting off
the headlights. I also UNLOCKED the power doors.
Everything was black we were IN the cemetery,
the van was open, and the girls sat frightened
asking why, and what are you DOING, Dad?
I sat silently, refusing to answer. Finally, Breanne
broke the silence.
Dad, this is kinda creepy, and were not scared
can we just go?
I was defated, and we drove out of the cemetery.
As we pulled away, I tried once more, and asked the
two girls, did you see it did you see it?
I see that youre a dork, Dad. Were not scared,
and can we please just GET there?!
Wow, Ive never BEEN so scared, Breanne
laughed. Sarcasm I should have never have taught
her that! We drove away slowly I looked once in
my rear view mirror to see nothing. There would
be no frightened daughter tonight. After all those
diffcult Jr. High years, I needed this payback! What
a let- down to fail at this chance to scare her! Oh
well, maybe NEXT Halloween!

To the Editor
I do not have enough information to comment on
the events that surrounded the recent unfortunate
situation involving the Strathmore Rural Fire depart-
ment except to say that we as a community thank
them all for their sacrifces that they make on our
behalf.
The Strathmore Rural Fire Department has always
been here in our times of crisis. We as a community
should stand up together and thank them in their
hour of need.
Funds may be desperately needed to help them
to continue to provide the services that they give so
selfessly.
Strathmore is a proud community with a rigid
backbone that will not stand idol by without lending
a helping hand.
I strongly encourage all of our local community
groups to provide funding or volunteerism where
needed to help this worthy cause.
Auctions, raffes and dinners could be held at short
notice to raise money for their cause. A hand up, not
a hand out, while they are on bended knee.
I will volunteer in any way possible to assist if
someone has an idea to help.
With great community organizations like the Strath-
more Kinsmen, Strathmore Lions Club and the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch #10 just to mention a few
the problem might be resolved through just a few
supportive events or one big collective fundraiser.
It truly is an honor to be a member of this Strath-
more community since 1976 because we all grow to-
gether in our hours of need.
Please give your fnancial support or volunteer
your time to keep the Strathmore Rural Fire Depart-
ment a main fxture of our future.
We are all in this together.

Gleichen Community Development Council
After a hectic summer and start to
the fall, its time to update everyone on
whats happening with the Gleichen
Community Development Council.
Right off the top, thanks go out to
Wheatland County Public Works for
their tremendous efforts helping the
community clean up from the Aug. 14
storm. Tree pick-up and removal went
smoothly and come Fall Fair Weekend,
streets and parks were back to normal.
A reminder to all residents that are
dropping off organic wood matter
[tree branches, shrubs], please try to
avoid dropping into the burn pit. There
is an area in the north east end of the
transfer station, by the gravel pit, where
this wood can be dropped off for chip-
ping. Its our hope that this chipped
wood can be used lay out the beginning
of a walking path around the commu-
nity. We have asked Wheatland County
to provide more permanent signage di-
recting where to dump tree waste.
Heres hoping the water tower re-
shingling goes off without a hitch and
allows us to hold a rededication of the
tower this spring in time for our com-
munitys 130 birthday. The Commu-
nity Development Council is looking
forward to working with Wheatland
County on some ideas for developing
the land around the water tower to tie
in with Beaupre Park.

The community of Crowfoot celebrated the 100th anniver-
sary of their school this past summer. The school was built in
1912 and it has been maintained and kept up in its original
style. In 1945 there werent enough students to justify keep-
ing the school. The students were being shipped into Strath-
more. A group of 21 ladies in the community didnt want to
see the school sit empty and so they set about saving it.
Ann Scheer said it took the ladies until 1948 before they
were able to raise enough money and negotiate with the
school board to be able to buy the property and the school-
house. The building is used now for the 4-H club, socials and
all sorts of gatherings.
In 1982 a few ladies in the community got together and
said why dont we create an anniversary cookbook, a 70th
anniversary, because there was going to be some 70th cel-
ebrations going, said Alan West.
In 2011 Scheer and Joan Tiede got together and decided to
do a centennial update to the Crowfoot Cookery Community
cookbook.
In the frst edition of the book there were 230 recipes, and
125 of them were brought forward out of that. The new book
has just shy of 500 recipes. Scheer is a history buff and saw
the revamping of the cookbook as a way to help the younger
generation remember some of the people that helped build
the community, but in a more fun way than digging through
a dusty history book.
I just wanted them to see that theres a value in keeping
connected to your roots, said Scheer.
The book is flled with many tried and true recipes from
members of the Crowfoot community. There are little hints,
tidbits and special sections for readers. Reading through the
recipes makes one think of the warmth and invokes memo-
ries of sitting in your moms, or grandmas kitchen cooking
away. There are tips in there on vegetables, meat and even
how to brew a perfect cuppa tea.
There are also tips on how to use fowers with salads and
presentations, cookery terms, weights and measures, how to
use herbs and spices.
There is a section, A Trip Around The World with Meat-

Community Falls Prevention
Education Initiative
Anyone can fall, but as
you age the risk increases.
Falls are the leading cause
of serious injury in older
adults. Every year, 1 in 3
Alberta seniors will fall.
The good news is that you
can take steps to prevent
falls.
Research shows that
falls are a serious and
growing problem for Al-
bertans. According to the
Alberta Centre for Injury
Control & Research (ACI-
CR), about 62,500 seniors
fall every year in Alberta.
In 2006, fall-related in-
juries among seniors re-
sulted in more than 6,900
hospital admissions and
18,700 emergency depart-
ment visits.
What can cause a fall?
We know that the risk of
falling and being injured
increases as people get
older, but falling is not a
normal part of getting
older. Falls are the result
of a complex interaction
of a wide variety of fac-
tors, one of which is age.
Some of these risk factors
include rushing and hur-
rying, poor balance and/
or weak legs, a fear of
falling, taking the wrong
dose of medications, or
unsafe conditions in or
outside of your home.
What can be done to
prevent a fall? First and
foremost, it is very im-
portant to tell your doc-
tor or health provider
if you have had a recent
fall. Second, seniors liv-
ing in the rural communi-
ties of Gleichen, Siksika,
Strathmore, Carseland,
Rockyford and Standard
can attend one of the six
Finding Balance presen-
tations. Finding Balance
focuses on educating se-
niors on proven interven-
tions such as improving
health and ftness, mak-
ing ones home safer and
reviewing medications.
These education sessions
are part of a local Com-
munity Falls Prevention
Education Initiative de-
veloped through a part-
nership between Alberta
Health Services, the Rural
Primary Care Network
and Growing Families
Society-Bridging the Gap
Program.

lies who came from places around the world.
I have actually made an awful lot of the recipes in here
over again, and the new ones and I have some real favourites
now. Its country western cuisine with a touch of the more
modern dishes, said Scheer.
Theres nearly 500 recipes and I havent found a favourite
yet but theyre sure all good, said West.
The frst run of the book was for 250 copies; it has been
sent to the printer for another 250.
The frst print run basically sold to residents and descen-
dants of residents of the area. So this printing were expect-
ing to go a little bit further. It is a fundraiser for the Crowfoot
Community Association, said West.
The book sells for $20 each, and promises good classic
recipes everyone can enjoy. Anyone wishing to purchase a

Although there is something to be
said for walking into a bookstore with
a Starbucks in hand, browsing the new,
glossy books, many people have found a
way to keep book selling and swapping
up-to-date with technology as social me-
dia websites like Facebook continue to
grow rapidly.
Small towns in particular have taken
to creating groups on Facebook that
members can join and sell, buy, swap
and lend a variety of different books.
Lesley Boutilier is the administrator
and creator of the Strathmore Books
Buy, Sell or Trade Facebook group,
which currently has over 130 members
and several picture albums full of books
for sale.
Boutilier says she created the group
because she was looking for specifc ti-
tles from an author, and found that ask-
ing around on other local groups wasnt
doing much good. When asking around,
Boutilier realized there was interest in
an online book sale group, so she be-
gan one. Within the frst 24 hours of the
group, there were over 80 members.
I would say [the group] is not mine,
more everyones, Boutilier said. I think
I got so many people to join [right when
the group opened] because reading
is one of those pastimes that never go
away.
Although groups like these would
work in big cities like Calgary, they are
most common in the surrounding area of
smaller towns and cities, like Okotoks,
Lethbridge, Strathmore and Chester-
mere. While the size of the small towns
does contribute to this, there are often
less bookstores and smaller libraries.
The small-town living is great for a
group like this, big cities just move too
fast, said Boutilier. Neighbours offer to
pick up items or have items dropped off
at their home to make things as conve-
nient as possible for you.
Ashley Webb, a frst year student at
Medicine Hat College, has used both
the Strathmore book sale group and the
Medicine Hat book sale group.
Webb says that although Strathmore
has a great library there is something
special about owning your own books.
Its a really convenient way to get
more books. You browse through the
photos of books, fnd a few that you
like, and go pick them up, said Webb.
Books on these websites are usu-
ally used, and therefore range between
about one to fve dollars per book.
For a post-secondary student on a
budget, these groups are great, Webb
said.
Other than the low cost, there are
many other benefts to groups like
these, such as the family feeling that the
members get.
You can make friends on a group like
this, and before you know it, youre or-
ganizing a book club and giving each
other recommendations, Webb said.
Boutilier points out groups like the
Strathmore Books Buy, Sell or Trade
are also a great way to de-clutter and
fnd specifc titles.
Books are a hobby, and with creative
people making sure they dont get left
behind in the wave of technology, they
can also be timeless.
Selling books online is a snap with Facebook

Its worth recognizing that while their marriage
accounts for only part of the years they have spent
on earth, at 72 years it is literally a lifetime for
many of the rest of society. A quick look through
the obituaries or life-expectancy charts shows that
their marriage is enjoying a longer lifetime than
many individuals.
Fellow members of their communities both in
Standard and Strathmore (where they now reside)
came to celebrate the most momentous occasion
of recognizing a devoted marriage of 72 years of
Elmer and Leona Jensen (nee Jensen).
Leona, originally from Audubon, Iowa was
originally introduced to Elmer when his brother
Anker Jensen (a Lutheran Pastor from California)
came to work on her familys farm in Iowa. Elmer
worked for her father for one month.
So after knowing each other for four years
(since 1936) Leona age 25 married Elmer at age
26, in 1940 at the end of the war. Both came from
strong and rich Danish heritage in their respective
families.
The Jensens were married by Rev. P.C. Paulson
in Chicago, who knew both of their families well,
and eventually helped Leona cross the border into
Canada.
Elmer says jokingly that Jackie, our frst son
came in 1943, and he was so much trouble to even
think about having anymore (tongue in cheek)
and that the next three followed quickly behind
like dominoes. Ellen Ann in 1948, Dallas in 1950
and the baby of the family Charlotte in 1952.
Today they have six grandkids and seven great-
grandchildren.
When asked what kind of advice they could
give a young couple today getting married they
had a few things to say. Elmer says, there are lots
of ups and downs and a lot of taking and giving.
Then Leona pokes him and says he meant giv-
ing and taking.
Both of them agreed that keeping regular hours
of breakfast at 7 a.m., dinner at noon and supper
at 6 p.m. is important to family to have structure.
Through it all, their strong faith, a devotional
Christian life, has brought them through many
things in life, family and work on the farm.
Leona has the gift of being a great hostess and
we always had extra people drop by for a meal
who were always welcomed at our table, said El-
mer.
In a day and age where the individual is held
up as being of the greatest importance, that look-
ing out for No. 1 is the only way to have a life
of achievement, fulfllment and accomplishment,
we are blessed to see the example of life of your
marriage, where two have submitted to each other
to become one for the sake of the other and the
sake of their Lord, says Pastor Brad Everett from
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard.

ried a Russian farmer in Odessa, Russia and stayed there, while
the rest of the family, which included the six boys, moved to
the United States, then to Canada one or two at a time, as they
could afford it, starting in 1895. The last child arrived in Canada
in 1901. They began farming operations in the Cypress Hills
area southeast of Medicine Hat, but as the new generations
were born, very few of them stayed in farming.
Hal was born in Medicine Hat in August 1941 and attended
RemembeRing OuR ROOts
Hal & Susan Lust
elementary and junior high schools there. He com-
pleted his education in Lethbridge, after his father
moved the family there, to continue his cattle busi-
ness. Hal has one brother and one sister (deceased).
Susans family originated in Northern France and
Sweden, and moved to the U.S. and then Alberta in
the early 1900s. Susan Dancoine was born in Janu-
ary 1948, also in Medicine Hat. She has three sisters
(one deceased).
Hal and Susan met in Calgary through a mutual
friend, and were married in Strathmore in December
1990. Hal has two daughters and three granddaugh-
ters from his frst marriage, while Susan has a son
and a daughter, and two grandsons.
After Hal graduated from high school in Leth-
bridge in 1960, he moved to Calgary and worked for
GMAC, a wholesale division of General Motors. Dur-
ing those years, he also bought
and sold many houses, and he
told me that he banked every
penny of the proft from the sale
of these houses.
Strathmore Motors was started
by a group of 17 investors from
Calgary, and opened for business
in April 1976. In February 1977,
Hal was advised by General Mo-
tors that shares of Strathmore
Motors had become available for
sale. Hal jumped at the chance to get involved in
a GM retail franchise, and subsequently purchased
50 per cent of the shares of Strathmore Motors and
recapitalized the company using the money he had
put aside from the purchase and sale of houses. On
May 1, 1978, Hal assumed his duties as operating
partner of Strathmore Motors, with a staff of nine
people. Then on January 1, 1984, he became sole
owner of Strathmore Motor Products, as he had pur-
chased all the outstanding shares from the original
17 partners.
It was during this period of time (July 1979) that
his frst love Alma-Mae died of breast cancer, at the
young age of 36 years.
Other residents of Strathmore have told me it was
not uncommon to see Hal in the winter, out on the
lot in the early morning shoveling snow, and in the
summer washing cars, before beginning his regular
daily duties.
Hal has been very involved in all aspects of com-
munity activities since 1978, when the population
was 2,400. He is a shareholder of Strathmore Golf
Club, is a member of and supports the AG Society
and Chamber of Commerce. He is a stalwart member
of The TransCanada Merchants Association whose
aim is to keep #1 Hwy running through town. Susan
is a volunteer at The Alliance Church and a Rescue
Animal Advocate. But, mostly she loves cooking, es-
pecially when all fve grandchildren are visiting.
Strathmore is a great place to have a business, and
Hal reports that most years have been good, with
the exception being the introduction of Trudeaus
National Energy Program in 1980, a deep recession
in the 1990s and GMs cutbacks three years ago.
During these periods, Strathmore Motors volume
of business dropped considerably, but he comment-
ed the Good Lord brought us through it all.
It might be noted that the most serious of these
down turn periods were the
GM cutbacks of three years ago,
when franchises were discon-
tinued by General Motors all
over North America. There was
a week during that period when
Hal was uncertain whether the
franchise in Strathmore would
be continued or cancelled by
General Motors.
Hal reports this was the most
pressure-flled week in his life,
but good things started to emerge after that terrible
week. The Oldsmobile and Pontiac lines were dis-
continued by GM, and Strathmore Motors is fortu-
nate enough to have been given the more popular
Buick and GMC lines.
What was once Strathmore Motors Chevrolet
Oldsmobile, became Strathmore Motors Chevrolet
Buick and GMC, with a staff of 31 people today.
Hal goes on to say regarding my business and per-
sonal life, the best move I ever made was coming to
Strathmore. It has good access to everything in all
directions east, west, north, and south. If you want
to go to a theatre, a fancy dinner, a pro-hockey or
football game the big city is just down the road.
Retirement is defnitely on the horizon - Susan
and I have seen most of the world, and in the com-
ing years, we plan to travel to the few places on
this earth, that we havent been to yet if the good
Lord is willing. Travel has made us both realize how
fortunate we are to have been born in this great
country of ours.

May & Joe is a brand new musical with all
new original pieces written by local artist Paul
Zakarias of Rosebud, with a few tried and true
hymns and carols thrown in for good measure,
debuting at the Rosebud Opera House this com-
ing weekend.
May is pregnant, which is truly a miracle for her.
Joe is in a state of confusion around dreams and
miracles and the visitation of an angel. How does
one wonder of the true Christmas story over 2000
years ago in todays society and all the demands
of the world?
This musical has a good sense of whimsy and a
light touch but packs a real punch. Director Mor-
ris Ertman states that at the opening read has one
in fts of laughter and then the tears.
Something special to start off this coming Christ-
mas season, the show will run from this coming
weekend until Dec. 22. Tickets for the show can
be purchased by calling the theatre at 1-800-267-
7553 or contacting them at www.rosebudtheatre.

The 2013 season holds many great expectations
for frst time theatre-goers as well as for the sea-
soned ticket holders.
This coming season showcases signifcant lives
how one life can actually matter in the grand
scheme of things, he said.
The theatre season starts off with Barefoot in
the Park (running March 22 - May 11). Showcas-
ing a couple of newlyweds with nothing in com-
mon, the zany romantic comedy is well worth
watching in the cold winter months.
Spring brings to the Opera House stage the
Cotton Patch Gospel, the gospel according to
bluegrass and the retelling of the story set in the
contemporary American South (running May 31
Aug. 24).
A mysterious journey begins to unravel in the
unexpected adventure of Underneath the Lintel:
An Impressive Display of Lovely Evidences from
July 3 to Aug. 24 on the Studio Stage. The librarian
is in search of a book that is 123 years overdue.
Fall brings a story from Thornton Wilder to life
in Our Town, a Day in the Life of Just About Ev-
erybody.
This town is every town and the simplicity of
life is this: underneath the everyday ordinary are
lives that are extraordinary, he said.
Finally, to wrap up the 2013 season is the time
loved classic Its A Wonderful Life, via an ensem-
ble cast of over two dozen characters with live
music, sound effects, 1940s charm, this holiday
event unfolds as a radio broadcast.
With Christmas coming a wonderful gift to re-
ceive or purchase ticket packs and season passes
to all or some of these fne performances that
come with a wonderful meal. To order season
tickets please call 1-800-267-7553.

The Annual Standard Librarys Ham & Oyster
supper has come and gone for another year. Well
over 200 people were in attendance for this com-
munity meal.
People come from all over East Wheatland to
get their fll of oysters and member of the Stan-
dard Library Board, Lori Bach said it was a great
turnout and quite frankly the best we have had in
years.
At the end of the evening 20 quarts of raw oys-
ters were sold at $20 a quart. Again, a part of the
success of these types of fundraisers are those
that participate and also those who donate their
time and energy in preparing for the meal itself.
Barry and Heather VanLaar continued their tra-
dition of donating the hams for the supper which
was sponsored by Encana, who have traditionally
given back to the communities they work around.
In some upcoming events, the Standard Library
will be presenting, via video conferencing, the
Lets Talk Money, an eight part Financial Literacy
Series. It starts on Thursday, Nov. 1, 7-8 p.m.
Arrive 15 minutes before the program begins,
and coffee and tea will be provided.
The Standard Library also wants all those that
are young at heart in the community to get ready
to rumble as Nintendo WII Sports Day is back!
Coming to the Library on Saturday, Nov. 3rd, at
1 p.m. This event is for ages 10 and up. Sign up is
required to participate. The main event is boxing.
Are you a champ? Will you take home the trophy?
For more information on either of these events

reena at (403) 644-3995 to register and book your
spots.

The Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame cash raffe began on March 23, guaran-
teeing a prize payout of $50,000 or 50 per cent of the tickets sold, whichever
amount was bigger. The winning number was drawn at the 2012 banquet and
induction ceremonies on Oct. 20 at the Coast Plaza Hotel in Calgary. Doug
and Gail MacDougall had bought the winning ticket from the rodeo hall of
fame booth in Medicine Hat earlier this year, and won the $50,000 prize. Gail
was the one who received the call, she didnt believe that Judi Wilson was
serious at frst. Right now the plan is to leave the money in the bank. Doug
has gone to long-term care and the money will go a long way into helping
some of the costs. Gwen Schneider (left) a volunteer with the Canadian Pro
Rodeo Hall of Fame, Judi Wilson secretary-treasurer with the Canadian Pro
Rodeo Hall of Fame, Doug MacDougall, Gail MacDougall, and Lester Gurnett

Big win!

depression and anxiety for years. Things got
tough for a bit to the point she had begun cut-

As adults we often can forget that
youth are dealing with many of the
same issues we are. Anxiety, stress, and
depression are common in todays so-
ciety; our youth, however, also have to
deal with the impacts of bullying.
Bullying can take many forms, but
its impact is the same: lowered self-es-
teem, poor marks in school, turning to
ways to cope. In some cases children
lash out by turning to drugs or alcohol
as a way to escape their lives; others
turn to cutting.
A few weeks ago the death of Aman-
da Todd brought to light the issues
some teens face today, but its only a
small facet of what is out there, and
while her death is tragic, her story is a
fairly common one.
Here in Strathmore a teen was strug-
gling to cope with anxiety issues, the
death of her grandma, concerns over
her family, and added onto it was the
daily verbal, mental and even physi-
cal abuse from some of her peers and
classmates.
Emma Kauenhofen, 14, is a junior
high student here in Strathmore. On
Sept. 19 she created a video, which
can be found by typing in My Secrets-
Emma Mae into YouTube search.
In the video Kauenhofen describes
what led her to begin cutting, and to
attempt suicide. The video also shows
her courage and strength to get past it.
I didnt do the video because I was
bored, or I didnt have anything better
to do. I did it because I heard enough
about what people can say to each
other and what it does and I knew it
was time for me to do something, said
Kauenhofen.
I know I cant stop everything and I
know for a fact theres always going to
be somebody picking on me and thats
never going to change, even if I lost
all my weight and looked like a super
model I would still be picked on for
something.
Im extremely proud of her because
I think it got a lot of people talking,
and hopefully thinking, about things
they say and how our words really im-
pact other people. To somebody whos
already sensitive you might think, oh
just let it roll off but that could be the
straw that breaks their back, you dont
know that, said Joey Kauenhofen, Em-
mas mom.
Everything began in Grade 5 for the
now Grade 9 student. She and her fam-
ily were living in Hussar and she had
started school in Strathmore. She be-
gan having anxiety issues, worrying
herself sick and often calling her mom
to come get her. She got to the point
she couldnt sleep in her own room, or
go to the mall in separate vehicles be-
cause she was always worrying about
the what ifs.
Sleepovers with friends didnt hap-
pen; even at her house she was too ner-
vous to have someone come and spend
the night, which made her feel left out
and different from the other girls her
age.
I think thats part of the reason that
made me so depressed, I felt like I lost
part of my childhood. What do you say
when you go to your friends house
and you cant have a sleepover because
youre afraid of something happening,
said Emma.
Through counselling and medication
she has been able to control her anx-
iety. She has only gone away for the
night twice since and still gets nervous
but tries to push through it.
Its never going to go away, you just
have to try to fnd something that will
help calm it down. I think that was def-
initely part of the reason as to why I
went into depression.
During Grades 5 and 6 her sister was
cutting, which is self-inficting cuts, or
slices into your skin, and Emma was
struggling to understand, while fght-
ing her own inner demons. Grade 7
was a good year for her, she made a lot
of good friends but in Grade 8 things
went downhill.
I had so many people, every day,
Im not even exaggerating, every day
I would walk in and someone would
make a remark about my size, they
would always no matter what it was,
said Emma.
They would say it in the simplest
ways, youre fat, youre a fat ass, or
they would say it more hinting towards
it, like at least I can move around my
desk, or youre taking up most of the
hallway stuff like that. Youre not sup-
posed to take what other people say to
heart but when youre hearing it 24/7
its kind of hard to deny it.
A lot of people are able to hide
their faws. You cant tell by looking at
someone that they come from a home
afficted with alcoholism, abuse or even
neglect but if you are overweight you
cant hide it, its out there for everyone
to see, said Joey.
Between the verbal and emotion-
al teasing she was going through at
school, Emma also had a falling out
with a good friend. There was a fellow
classmate who had always been mean
physically and verbally to many of the
Surviving junior high
other students. Emma said the teachers
would talk to him, things would stop
for a day or two and then the class-
mate would be back at it. One day he
punched Emma in the arm, the next
time it was in the face.
The worst part was the teacher was
watching, she saw it, and she left the
room to go get another cup of coffee,
said Emma.
As far as Im concerned, the schools
say they have zero tolerance for bully-
ing but I have yet to see that. A particu-
lar boy who was bullying Emma was
able to go to great lengths without ever
being expelled. said Joey.
Emma and Joey called the RCMP and
reported the incident, which only made
things worse in a sense. Now people
would tease her by indicating she
would call the police for every form of
physical contact, such as a high-fve.

After all this I realized the teachers dont do anything. They
say theres zero bullying tolerance but thats not true, why
does it go on every day if there is? I know you cant monitor
every student in the school, but after you get two or three
complaints maybe its time to put your foot down and say, you
know what if this continues were going to be pulling you out
of this class, said Emma.
With that one boy they kind of gave the excuse that thats
Creating a message to help struggling teens
him, theyre trying to deal with him, hes different,
not special but maybe he comes from a bad home,
but thats him, hes a trouble maker - almost like we
need to learn how to take what he dishes out. Hav-
ing a bad home life may be a reason for having an-
ger issues but its no excuse for bullying, said Joey.
In Grade 8 Emma became extremely depressed.
Everything seemed to pile on top of itself, and the
stress of the past few years built up until the point
that she turned to coping methods fellow students
had used, ones she had always made fun of. She
began cutting, and even attempted suicide.
I never really understood it until I tried it, until it
started happening. My friends would tell me, I used
to do it, or I still do it, but it helps me. It was never
a support issue at home, no matter what I had my
parents support and my sister, that wasnt an issue.
I dont come from a home where my dads an alco-
holic or Im getting abused or sexually assaulted or
anything, nothing of the sort, said Emma.
I have an awesome family, I always have but a
family can only support you so much before you
have to wander out and fgure stuff out on your
own and its up to you. Theres a point where you
just have to do stuff for yourself and really its just
up to you.
People offer their help but you cant take it be-
cause its a challenge against yourself really, its you
against you. As much as I offer my help and sup-
port to them I know they cant take it.
Emma said it was her personality and her hu-
mour that pulled her away from the depression.
If she can crack a joke and get someone laughing
it makes her day, and makes her feel good about
herself.
Joey knew something was up with her daugh-
ter the night she made the video, but didnt know
what. She frst saw it online, and her frst thought
was relief.
I think a lot of people saw that video as if it was
a cry for help from her and I saw it as so different,
I saw it as, this is who I am, this what happened
to me, this is how I dealt with it and then I knew I
wasnt dealing with it the right way and I realized I
have goals and Im better than that, and Ive come
through it, said Joey.
She feels Emmas video is showing people that
even though it might be bad right now, it wont al-
ways be like that and things will get better. Emma
said the comments she got about her video sur-
prised her. A few people who had been mean to
her in the past and picked on her or fought with
her commented on her video in a good way.
Say 100 people saw that video and only one
person changed what they did, Im glad I made a
difference.

Despite having a solid season and
being one of the highest scoring teams
in the league, the Wheatland Kings are
having a tough time cracking the top
teams in the Heritage Junior B Hockey
League.
The high-octane Kings have had
their way with the weaker sisters of the
league, but have yet to beat some of the
top teams like Medicine Hat, Okotoks,
Coaldale, Blackfads, and most recently
Three Hills.
Even though they have matched each
squad stride-for-stride, Wheatland has
yet to register two points against an
upper-echelon team.
According to Kings assistant coach
Derek Schlamp the answer is simple
they have yet to claim two points be-
cause they have yet to play a full 60
minutes of Kings hockey.
We know how well we can play, (but
we need to) play 60 minutes of consis-
tent hockey, said Schlamp. We as a
coaching staff can tell them what to do
and everything, but they need to show
up and play night in, night out. They
have to feed off of their linemates, gain
some chemistry and come together as
a team.
We have to play a better all-round
game. We cant put ourselves in the
situations we do like in our own end
we need to put that extra effort in. We
seem to fall behind early in the frst pe-
riod and it takes so much work to get
ourselves back in the game.
That was the case this past weekend,
as the Kings gave up the frst goal in
each game before eventually coming
back to take the lead.
The Kings started the weekend with
a trip to Stettler to face the Lightning
on Oct. 26. Wheatland allowed the frst
goal and trailed 5-1, before dominating
the fnal two periods to earn a 7-6 win.
We got down 5-1 and we just stayed
positive you have to stay positive and
believe in yourselves, said Schlamp.
We didnt get negative on the bench,
we just picked each other up from that
frst period and chipped away at the
lead.
Andrew Bergmann lead the way for
the Kings, scoring four goals and add-
ing an assist, while Ross Fox had a goal
and three helpers. Sam Lonnberg and
Sam McKinnon each had a goal and an
assist, while Evan Elaschuk and Arron
Elaschuk each recorded two assists.
The following day on home ice, the
Kings fell behind early before scoring
three unanswered goals to take a two-
goal lead. However, the Thunder re-
sponded with four unanswered goals
of their own, eventually winning the
game 5-4.
We didnt bring 60 minutes to the ta-
ble today, said Schlamp after the loss.
Right from the get-go, I dont know
what it was, but we werent ready to
play tonight. Three Hills is always a
team ready to work hard and bring it
every game. We took a period and a
half off and it cost us.
Bergmann continued his point streak
by registering three assists in the loss,
while Rylan Muenchrath and Brennan
Grasdahl each chipped in with a goal
and an assist. Parker Georgsen and
Aaron Durant each recorded a goal.
The Kings will look to get back to
their winning ways this weekend when
they host Mountainview on Nov. 3 (8
p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre,
before traveling to Banff the following
day to take on the lowly Bears.

The bantam AA Warriors and

this Fridays home game. Peter
Maher, the voice of the Calgary
Flames play-by-play on Sportsnet
960, Harvey the Hound, and two,
possibly three to-be-announced
Flames alumni will be at the
game.
It all began when Maher, an
honourary chair member of the
Alzheimer Society of Calgary,
held an auction on the radio to
help raise money for the society
as part of their annual walk and
run.
The way it works is Im going
to do the play-by-play like I would
a normal game, and the people
from Flames Jumbotron have pro-
vided a camera and a guy who
are going to go out there and vid-
eotape the game with my audio
on it. Then well produce DVDs
that well give to all the players at
a later date, said Maher.
We hope to make it a good fun
night for them.
Itd be really good to have a
packed house, it would be fun
and Im sure a lot of people would
like to see Harvey the Hound and
some of the alumnis, said War-
rior player parent Stephan LeCav-
alier.
The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
on Nov. 2. The boys will be play-
ing against the Airdrie Lightning.
Reebok CCM has made a dona-

It has been a busy month for all proj-
ects. The sewing group met on Friday,
Oct. 12 at Crowfoot Hall. They discussed
four projects for this year. The older
girls will be ordering hoodie kits and
will be sewing hoodies with zippers.
They will also be completing the quilts
that they started last year. For their sec-
ond meeting they fnished their kits
and got asked what they would like to
do. Lego have had one project meeting
so far where they talked about the proj-
ects format. This year they will cover
four sections, vehicles, spacecraft, sci-f
and castles and knights. At their frst
meeting they began the vehicle sec-
tion by starting on a Jeep project. The
Crowfoot Multi Palette Pleasers met for
the frst time on Friday, Oct. 12. Each
cooking event for the Palette Pleasers
focuses around an ethnic theme. The
theme for October was South Africa.
Elaine Wheeler (a South African im-
migrant) along with her sister Mari-
aan (who lives in South African and
is visiting Canada for the second time
for a four month stay) led the group
in a traditional ethnic meal, the group
made Boerewors Braai, a South African
sausage. The group cooked the sausage
the traditional South African way, over
an open fre with coals. The group en-
joyed their time with Elaine and Mari-
aan and would like to thank them for
their willingness to share their time
and country.
Due to cold weather we had to can-
cel our Halloween party at the Country
Farm house, we are going to go Nov. 2.
Next Club General meeting is Nov. 5 at
6:30 p.m.

Spooky month fnally over for Bisons
Mario Prusina
Times Editor
While the ghosts and goblins were out in full
force for Halloween, nothing has scared UFA Bi-
sons head coach Jeremy Friesen more than a num-
ber.
The plain and simple number of 47 is a fright-
ening reminder of the UFA Bisons goals against
through 10 games this season.
Despite being a profcient goal scoring team, the
local triple-A midget team has allowed the second
most goals against in the South Division, resulting
in a mediocre 3-5-0 record.
Thank God October is over and we can turn the
page and focus on November, said Friesen.
The Bisons capped off the harsh October with
a pair of road losses a 7-1 loss to Red Deer Oct.
26 and a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Lethbridge two
days later.
This past weekend was a tale of two teams,
said the coach. Friday night going into Red Deer,
we talked a lot about the game plan we wanted
to implement and how we knew that they didnt
take any shortcuts. There is a reason they are the
defending National Champions and a reason they
were undefeated up until that point.
We went in, took a couple of shortcuts right at
the frst shift which resulted in a breakaway goal
for them. Then we struggled to fnd our legs and
get back to our game plan it led to making more
and more shortcuts (and mistakes).
However, when the puck dropped in Lethbridge,
the Bisons played a much better game. Despite
outshooting their opponent, the Bisons made
three mistakes and all three resulted in a goal for
the Pronghorns.
We played well, we probably out-chanced
them, but the power play let us down in the frst
period, said the coach. We didnt capitalize on
the chances when we should have and that was
the difference in the game.
According to Friesen, the goaltending was much
better this past weekend compared to the past and
he thinks the team is making strides in the defen-
sive end.
(We saw) some encouraging steps (in our goal-
tending), said Friesen. I still frmly believe in our
team and once we put everything in place and we
all start pulling in the right direction, all at once, it
will be great. Well be a pretty scary team.
The Bisons will look to get back in the win col-
umn this coming weekend when they host the
Southeast Tigers on Nov. 3 (5:30 p.m.) and the
Calgary Royals Nov. 4 (2 p.m.) at the Strathmore
Family Centre.

A major junior girls volleyball tour-
nament for schools in Southern Alberta
is going to be held at Holy Cross Col-
legiate in November.
For the frst time ever, the school will
be hosting the Junior A Girls 3J Zone
volleyball tournament. The tourna-
ment will held on the Remembrance
Day weekend, Nov. 9 - 10.
Were really excited because its al-
ways fun to play at home (in front of
our fans), said Holy Cross Collegiate
Junior A Girls volleyball team coach
Jennifer Yersh. You never know
where the zones will be, (so to play at
our school this year is great).
The 3J tournament is for girls vol-
leyball teams that are in Grades 7 to
9. Holy Cross Collegiate won the right
to host the tournament after a bid-
ding process involving all of the other
athletic directors of the participating
schools. The tournament also marks
the end of the volleyball season for ju-
nior high teams, with 18 teams com-
peting in the tournament.
Because of the way the season end-
ed up going for Holy Cross Collegiates
own girls volleyball team, Yersh said
that she hopes for the best result pos-
sible for her team.
Its been a season of ups and downs
for us, so we just want the girls to work
together and have fun (during the tour-
nament), she said.
Preparations are going well as the
tournament approaches, Yersh said.
Its not the frst time that weve
hosted a tournament, she said, adding
that because of the schools experience
with hosting tournaments, they feel
that they have the idea of what it takes
to prepare and host the tournament,
and make it a success.
The tournament will be the last set
of games that will be played this sea-
son. It will also be the last time that the
team will be together, and therefore
it was important that the team has a
great time during the tournament, she
added.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing
of our father, grandfather & friend. Jack was born in
Ravenscraig, SK on July 21, 1930. He farmed in the
Eastend district for many years before moving to Alberta
to work at various jobs throughout his career. He
certainly was a jack of all trades. His most recent jobs
were at the Strathmore Golf Course and was still doing
the grounds at the Strathmore Legion. He recently
moved into the Wheatland Lodge and was loving it
there. He was a great hunter, trapper and fsherman.
He also loved berry picking and making jams, jellies
and pickles - some of which he won ribbons at local
fairs. He was know to some as Trapper Jack. I know
he had many friends in Strathmore and he sincerely
loved being around you all. He was predeceased by
his mother, father, stepfather, and one son Robert.
He is survived by his daughter Debbie (Don) and 2
grandsons, Shaun (Robyn) and great-granddaughters
Annabelle and Haven, and Curtis and also his son Brian
(Cindy) and grandson Ryan (Lonnie), great-grandson
Gage and great-granddaughter River. A celebration
of Jacks live will be held at the Strathmore Legion on
Sunday, November 4th at 1:00. We would like to extend
a special thank-you to Bob & Yvonne Hartell and Dixie
