V Diomedes slays Pandarus But never shaken, Staunch Diomedes shot back, No hit - you missed! But the two of you will never quit this fight, Id say, till one of you drops and dies and gluts with blood Ares who hacks at men behind his rawhide shield! With that he hurled and Athena drove the shaft and it split the archers nose between the eyes it cracked his glistening teeth, the tough bronze cut off his tongue at the roots, smashed his jaw and the point came ripping out beneath his chin. He pitched from his car, armor clanged against him, a glimmering blaze of metal dazzling round his back the purebreds reared aside, hoofs pawing the air and his life and power slipped away on the wind. [ Fagles, 316 - 329 ]
Unshaken by the blow, Diomedes answered: A miss, no hit. I doubt you two will quit, though, being what you are, till one of you is down and glutting leather-covered Ares, god of battle, with your blood! At this he made his cast, his weapon being guided by Athena to cleave Pandaros nose beside the eye and shatter his white teeth: his tongue the brazen spearhead severed, tip from root, then plowing on came out beneath his chin. He toppled from the car, and all his armor clanged on him, shimmering. The horses quivered and shied away; but life and spirit ebbed from the broken man, and he lay still. [ Fitzgerald, 331 - 344 ]
Patroclus hurled next, the bronze launched from his hand - no miss, a mortal hit. [ Fagles, 567 - 597 ]
Patroklos then made his last throw, and the weapon left his hand with flawless aim... [ Fitzgerald, 554 - 585 ]
but Hektor leapt down from the burnished car, he hit the earth with a yell, seized a rock and went for Teucer, mad to strike the archer just plucking a bitter arrow from his quiver, notching it on the string and drawing back the bow to his right shoulder, when Hector, helmet flashing, caught him where the collarbone bridges neck and chest, the deadliest spot of all. There Hector struck, hurling the jagged rock at Teucer drawing in fury snapped the string and his hand went numb at the wrist, he dropped to a knee, dazed... the bow slipped from his grip. [ Fagles, 366 - 376 ]
As he did so, Lord Hektor sprang out of the glittering chariot with a savage cry, picked up a stone, and ran for Teukros in a fury to strike him down. Out of his quiver the cool archer drew one more keen arrow, fitting it into the stirng, but even as he pulled it back Lord Hektor cast the rough stone and caught him on the shoulder just at the collarbone, that frail crossbeam that separates the chest and throat. A tendon snapped; the archers arm went numb; he dropped on one knee, and his bow fell. [ Fitzgerald, 361 - 372 ]
And there he dropped and slept the sleep of bronze. [ Fagles, 279 ]
So the captain reported. A black cloud of grief came shrouding over Achilles. Both hands clawing the ground for soot and filth, he poured it over his head, fouled his handsome face and black ashes settled onto his fresh clean war-shirt. Overpowered in all his power, sprawled in the dust, Achilles lay there, fallen... tearing his hair, defiling it with his own hands. [ Fagles, 24 - 74]
A black stormcloud of pain shrouded Akhilleus, On his bowerd head he scattered dust and ash in handfuls and befouled his beautiful face, letting black ash sift on his fragrant khiton. Then in the dust he stretched his giant length and tore his hair with both hands. [ Fitzgerald, 25 - 30 ]
there as Hector charged in fury brilliant Achilles drove his spear and the point went stabbing clean through the tender neck but the heavy bronze weapon failed to slash the windpipe Hector could still gasp out some words, some last reply... he crashed in the dust [ Fagles, 384 - 388] Here, then, as the Trojan charged, Akhilleus drove his point straight through the tender neck, but did not cut the windpipe, leaving Hektor able to speak and respond. He fell aside into the dust. [ Fitzgerald, 386 - 390 ]
But now beware, or my curse will draw gods wrath upon your head, that day when Paris and lord Apollo for all your fighting heart - destroy you at the Scaean Gates! [ Fagles, 422 - 424]
Think a bit, though: this may be a thing the gods in anger hold against you on that day when Paris and Apollo destroy you at the Gates, great as you are. [ Fitzgerald, 426 - 429 ]
Death cut him short. The end closed in around him. Flying free of his limbs his soul went winging down to the House of Death, wailing his fate, leaving his manhood far behind, his young and supple strength. But brilliant Achilles taunted Hectors body, dead as he was, Die, die! For my own death, Ill meet it freely - whenever Zeus and the other deathless gods would like to bring it on! [ Fagles, 425 - 432 ]
Even as he spoke, the end came, and death hid him; spirit from body fluttered to undergloom, bewailing fate that made him leave his youth and manhood in the world. And as he died Akhilleus spoke again. He said: Die, make an end. I shall accept my own whenever Zeus and the other gods desire. [ Fitzgerald, 430 - 436W ]
