Trail Progresses on Many Fronts

Bike to the Seas 20th Anniversary year has seen actual trail construction underway on many fronts. Many volunteers have helped support these efforts as well. Everett: Bike to the Sea held a ribbon cutting for the Everett section of the trail before Bike to the Sea Day on June 3rd. Everett Councillors Mike McLaughlin, Anthony DiPierro and Cynthia Sarnie were joined by Malden Mayor Gary Christenson and accepted an Honorary Captain Award from Bike to the Sea for the Citys leadership in getting the first section of trail open. Riders enjoyed a preview of the Malden stretch as far as Main Street. Riders feasted at the Dockside in Malden on pizza and a 20th anniversary cake. The Gateway Communities grant program has funded a design for paving the path. Mayor DeMaria is seeking funds to pave this section; hopefully by next year.

Malden: Progress continues on the completion of the trail from Everett to Linden Square. Mayor Christenson has committed additional resources to enhance the trail surface and better separate the trail from vehicles. As of the date of this newsletter the last phases of work were being completed including nearly 1/2 mile

of guard rail that prevents motor vehicles from parking and driving on the path. A clean-up and trail building day is planned for Saturday October 13th from 9 am to 1 pm. Meet at the future community garden located near Bryant, Faulkner and Railroad Avenues in Malden. The City is waiting on word from the US EPA to complete work through a hazardous waste site near Maplewood Street. Mayor Christenson worked with Senator Clark to secure a bond commitment that will allow the Malden section to be paved in the future. Saugus: The Town of Saugus and Bike to the Sea have been working closely with Iron Horse Preservation. The segment from the Revere line to Central Street has been completed at this time. Bike to the Sea volunteers and the Saugus DPW have worked to install fencing and large rocks to limit motor vehicle access. Many volunteers helped clean the trail and remove excess vegetation.

Revere: Volunteers from Zoo New England helped clean the North Revere segment of the trail. The City of Revere, Iron Horse Preservation and Bike to the Sea are working out the final details of an agreement to allow this section to be built in Summer 2013. This will also include a short stretch in Malden to connect to Linden Square. Lynn: OH WELL..Just like the Red Sox may be next yearhang in there. A big thanks to REI for supporting the Northern Strand Community Trail by awarding Bike to Sea a $4000 recreational trails grant!!

Hillbilly Holiday: What if a group of indie rockers took a hard right turn into traditional country music, not

worrying too much about the rules, except for the one that says "anything goes"? And what if they were fronted by a lead singer whose only country credentials are that she comes from a country (Taiwan) and doesn't really like country music? And what if they stretched the definition of "country music" to include...pretty much anything? And what if they put on some fancy clothes and just tried to show people a good time?

Bike to the Sea President Jim Tozza meets with Bikes Not Bombs
Jim Tozza met recently with the folks from Bikes Not Bombs (BNB), a local nonprofit that uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. Each year they reclaim thousand of bicycles. BNB creates local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation. Jim plans to attend the Bike Not Bombs school to learn how to fix and build bikes. Jim would like to take the skills he learns at BNB and teach high school and middle school kids in the Saugus area how to repair bikes. Learn more about Bikes Not Bombs at www.bikesnotbombs.org.

Fall Colors Ride 2012: Northern Strand Trail Tour and Leaf Peepers Delight
By Steve Winslow The annual Fall Colors Ride on Sunday October 14th will be our first along newly completed sections of the Northern Strand in Malden and Saugus. Arrive at 9:30 am at the trail kiosk located across from 195 Canal Street in Malden. We anticipate a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Malden section of the trail. The ride will head north at approximately 10 am. Riders will enjoy an 18-mile loop that includes the Malden and Saugus sections of the Northern Strand, a quick stop by the Saugus Iron Works, a pedal through the Breakheart Reservation and Pine Banks Park, finishing up along the Malden River Route back to Canal Street. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served at the finish. The Northern Strand Trail primarily consists of a crushed asphalt surface that is best suited for bikes with wider tires such as hybrid, mountain, touring or cruiser bicycles (tires ~32 mm in width or greater). The ride includes a busy stretch of

Main Street in Saugus so riders must be age 13 or older. Teenage riders must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian. All riders must wear helmets to participate. Dress in layers in case of cool weather. Heavy rain date of Sunday October 21st.

Melrose Cycles: Ride Planned for October 20th Learn how easy it is to take your bike on the T
The Melrose Energy Commission, Mass in Motion, Bike to the Sea and the City of Malden are sponsoring a special event to promote cycling on Saturday October 20th at 11am, meet on Essex Street at Melrose City Hall. The event includes a ride to the Oak Grove T station to tour the new bike storage facility. There will also be demonstration of MBTA bike racks on buses. In addition, MBTA staff will be available to answer questions. The following special events will be held at Melrose City Hall: Free Bike helmets, Bike repair demos Childrens activities Meet other cycling enthusiasts Refreshments.
