I have long knit
primarily for other
people, and due to my
fondness for knitting for
others, the Holiday issue is
always a particular favorite.
I love small, quickly knit
projects and seeing so many
in one issue, I am always
inspired to cast on more
projects than I can possibly
nish in a single holiday season. This issue is no different, and I already
selected several projects to add to my knitting queue.
If, like me, you too are anxious to get started on your holiday knitting, you
will love how jam packed this issue is with quick and easy project ideas.
And, regardless of whether you live in a warm or cool climate, you will
have no difculties nding several great gift ideas. For your coffee or tea
loving family and friends knit our Coffee Cozies, page 45. With three
simple patterns to choose from, they will make for a wonderful project
for knitters of all skill levels. The small size makes them a very quick knit,
perfect to ll those last minute gift needs, and the best part is they can use
up small bits of leftover yarn. One of these simple cozies will make a lovely
addition to a gift basket, or knit several for teacher or co-worker gifts.
Living in a state that experiences cold weather in the winter, I love giving
gifts that are fun, fashionable, and functional, which is why I am excited
to try thrumming. Using our helpful instructions featured in A Beginners
Guide to Thrumming, page 22, I have made plans to knit both the
Paintbox Mittens, page 36, and the Awaiting St. Nick Stocking, page
29. If you also live in a cold climate, you wont want to miss any of the
holiday projects featuring this fun technique that adds warmth to your
outdoor accessories.

Functional and fashionable, this traditional technique adds a decorative
touch to your kniting. Make outdoor accessories extra warm with a sof
layer of roving.
Trummed kniting
Depending on which method is
used, thrumming is as simple as
catching a tuft of roving (also known
as un-spun eece) while knitting
to create a eeced backing to the
project. Once washed and worn, the
eece mats down and partially felts,
creating a soft and warm lining that
separates itchy wool from sensitive
skin while keeping the skin dry.
There are several ways to thrum.
Each technique is slightly different
than the other, however, but the end
result is the same.
Shown here are two methods of
thrumming: the simplest technique
of traditional thrumming and an
updated version that are both used
on the projects in this issue. With
traditional thrumming, the roving is
actually knit and treated like working
yarn. The roving stitch stands out as
a design element, especially when a
contrast-colored roving is used. The
updated version does not use the
roving as a stitch but instead places
the tuft on top of the working yarn
to be caught in the back of the work.
Since the roving is caught behind the
stitch, it looks more like eece and
is less apparent on the right side,
with just slight halos of tuft showing
through to the right side. Traditional
thrumming is usually knit every 4
stitches or less with several knitting
rounds in between. The updated
version of thrumming usually occurs
every other stitch and every other
round for a lions mane look!

A Beginners
Guide
Thrummed knitting originated in Newfoundland, Canada, and was traditionally
used in mittens to keep hands warm and dry in the harsh cold climate. Nowadays,
thrummed knitting can also be found in headbands, slippers, and hats.

Using a rope of roving, lightly pull
and lengthen roving (called drafting)
to create a lighter, more airy piece
of roving. Tear roving into 5-inch
lengths and bring ends together to
create a loop. With index nger and
thumb, roll center of loop together
(where the ends come together)
and roll it to same thickness as the
yarn used in the project (photo
A). Roving will look like a bow tie
(photo B).
Work to desired stitch where
thrumming will be added. Drop the
working yarn and pick up 1 bow tie
tuft. Center the tuft on the right-
hand needle with the bow tie ends in
back of the work (photos C and D).
Knit the stitch (photo E).
When knitting the next stitch, bring
the working yarn behind the roving
and knit the stitch (photo F).
Pull tails gently to secure the roving.

Cut pieces of roving into 3- to
4-inch lengths. Pull apart the roving
to the same thickness as the yarn
(photo G).
Work to desired stitch where
thrumming will be added. Pick up the
stitch as if to knit and center tuft onto
the working yarn (photo H). Knit the
stitch with the working yarn (photo
I). Tuft is laying on the backside of the
stitch caught between the knit and
purl stitch (photos J and K).
Pull tails gently to even the lengths
if necessary. Also, roving may
be lightly pulled apart, brushed,
or trimmed for the desired look
(photo L).
Tips
Got a bare spot? Crochet roving
into the bare spotlike you
would add fringe.
Thrumming can be added
to any project; however,
thrumming adds bulk to the
project and alters the overall
gauge. Thrumming can easily be
worked around the edge of a
sleeve or collar for a row or two
without losing the integrity of
the garment.
Never thrum every stitch as
this will create too much bulk
and will distort the stitches.
Thrumming can occur every
other stitch or less often,
depending on the desired look
or coverage.
Not happy with the thrummed
appearance? Simply pull out
the thrummed rows from the
working project, split each tuft
in half, and knit the rows with
half the tuft thickness. Trim to

In the last issue, we explored how
knit and purl stitches can be com-
bined to create a range of different
ribbings, each with their own special
characteristics and uses. This time,
we return to the basic knit and
purl, but instead combine them into
something extra special.
Unlike ribbing, these textured
stitches balance knit and purl stitches
in such a way as to neither curl nor
pull in, making them a perfect choice
for projects that need to lie at, such
as scarves, table runners, curtains,
potholders, and the like. Best of all,
projects like these make ideal gifts
no need to know someones size, just
multiply your desired width by the
gauge, nd the closest number that
will work with the stitch pattern, cast
on, and go!

Step 1: Glue Styrofoam balls

half, and 1 in fourths.

arm and leg shapes. Fold 2 of the
fourths into ear shapes.
Step 5: Push the pipe cleaners into
position on the body.
Step 6: Beginning at the head,
wrap the roving tightly around the
Styrofoam balls. Press the roving so it
adheres to itself.
Step 7: Continue wrapping the
roving around the neck and then
around one of the arms, and follow
that by wrapping the opposite leg.
Step 8: Break the roving, press to
adhere, and start wrapping the
opposite arm and leg. Continue
wrapping until the bear appears
round and uffy. Wrap more around
the arms and legs so they don't
appear too skinny.
Step 9: Glue the nose and eyes in
place.
Step 10: Tie the ribbon around the
bear's neck.
Step 11: Use the sewing needle
with metallic thread to pull the
thread through the top of the bear's
head (between his ears). Be sure to
incorporate the Styrofoam.
Step 12: Tie the thread so you have
a hanging ornament.
Step 13: Use hairspray to ensure the
roving stays attached.

In our Spring 2012 issue we told you about the importance of gauge,
and while you should always check your gauge to ensure the proper t, it is
important to start with the right yarn weight. The weight of a yarn refers to the
thickness of the yarn. That thickness can be comprised of a single ply or multiple
plies. Single-ply yarns are comprised of a single strand of ber in various weights,
and heavier-weight yarns will often resemble roving. In multiple-ply yarns each ply is
the same thickness, and the number of plies creates the thickness of the yarnthe
larger the number of plies the thicker the yarn. Yarn plies used to be the same size;
however, plies are no longer a consistent size
and can vary widely from yarn manufacturer
to yarn manufacturer. Due to these changes
in yarn manufacturing, the Craft Yarn Council
of America has begun a rating system based
on the recommended needle sizes and the
gauge created by each yarn in the different
weights; the new rating system classies yarn
into seven different yarn weights.

We have compiled a helpful guide on the following pages
but remember there are no knitting rules; lace can be knit
with bulky weights, and cabled sweaters can be knit with lace
weight. Just as the weight plays a role in your nished fabric,
so does the gauge; the weight will affect the appearance and the
denseness, but ultimately its up to your personal preferences.
If you like the appearance of lace in a bulky weight yarn, go
for it, and knit yourself a closet full of shawls. Weight is a
personal choicewhich weight is your favorite?
Lace weight yarn is generally plied
and is typically two plies. These
multiple plies make the yarn stronger
and more durable. This weight of
yarn can appear very thin and ne;
however, depending on the ber
content, it can create garments that
are very warm. Typically knit using
size US 000 to 1 needles, this weight
will enhance the lacy texture of
knitted patterns. Larger needles can
also be used, which will increase the
lacy texture of the nished fabric. It
can be difcult to keep a consistent
tension and stitch size when knitting
this yarn in straight stockinette stitch,
and that inconsistent stitch size can
create an additional level of interest.

Super-ne weight yarns are often
labeled sock weight, and just as that
sounds they are most often used to
knit socks. However, they shouldnt
be limited to just socks and can be
used to create delicate light-weight
shawls and sweaters, in addition
to light-weight and durable baby

needles, this weight will also create
lacy and delicate patterns. Depending

for everything from garments to

Because of the larger size of the
yarn, the nished lace pattern will
still be open and pretty; however, it
will be more substantial and will lose
some of the delicate appearance of
lace knit with a lighter yarn. Because
this yarn is thicker in diameter, fewer
stitches are needed to add length
and width to projects and therefore
projects are created more quickly.
Additionally, this larger yarn will add
more depth to textured stitches, and
cables will appear more pronounced
and raised, giving them additional
interest. Using worsted weight yarn
and smaller needles will produce a

Bulky weight is a wonderful option
when creating warm cabled sweaters
and blankets. Because of the larger
size of the yarn, the cables are
pronounced, adding to the three-
dimensional appearance. Additionally,
the act of cabling stitches involves
knitting the stitches out of order
to create the raised and recessed
sections. When cabling lighter weight
yarns, gaps can often be seen where
the stitches are twisted, but these
gaps are almost non-existent with this
weight of yarn as the yarn is dense
enough to ll and hide the gaps.
Bulky weight can also be used in
lace patterns; however, like worsted
weight, the design will lose much of
the delicate lace appearance. Projects
knit with a bulky weight yarn can
be knit very quickly as it takes fewer
stitches and fewer rows to produce a
larger nished fabric.
Super-bulky weight

Super-bulky weight most often
appears as roving, although there
are some yarns in this weight that
are plied. This weight will knit the
fastest as it produces the largest
gauge. Lace patterns knit with this
weight will not appear very delicate
and depending on the pattern much
of the denition may be lost, but
textured stitches will have a much
more dened appearance, and cables
will have more height and depth
than other weights. This weight will
quickly knit any project, and due to
the large size of the stitches, this
weight can be a wonderful tool to
learn new techniques as the stitches
are easily seen.

Twisted loop cast on
The twisted loop cast on is an easy
method that will produce a soft, elas-
tic edge. It is a great choice for adding
on stitches or when knitting lace.
1 Make a slip knot with a tail long
enough to cast on required number of
stitches (about
" per stitch);
place slip knot
on needle.

Knit smart If your cast on stitches
are too tight, use a needle one or
two sizes larger than the pattern calls
for. Switch back to correct needle
size before you begin to knit.
Knitted cast on
The knitted cast on method produces
a loose, soft edge. This would not be
a good choice for a garment with a
ribbed edge, as it will look sloppy.
1 Make a slip
knot, leaving
a short tail (at
least 4"); place
slip knot on left
needle.
2 Insert tip of
right needle
from left to
right through
the loop. Tip
of right needle
will be behind

Check your gauge
For best results, always take time to check your gauge. Using the same needles
and yarn you will use for your project, knit a swatch that is about 5" (12.5 cm)
square. Count the number of stitches and rows in 4". If you have more rows
or stitches than indicated in your pattern, try larger needles and knit another
swatch. If you have fewer rows or stitches than indicated, make another swatch
using smaller needles. Continue this process until your swatch matches the
numbers given in your pattern. Although this seems tedious, it is worth the time
to increase the accuracy of the nished size of your project. A gauge tool, such
as the one shown, can aid in counting stitches and rows.
