G. GAZETTE
SUMMARIZATION OF THE GREAT DEBATE ! Yesterdays debate was a maze of questions and answers! Here is a summarization of the questions that the candidates were asked: ! Why do you think its acceptable to deny children some of the basic rights to live? Was the rst question in this historic debate. Omar Ikkas team had this to say, We believe that it is the right and freedom of the women to decide what they want to happen to their body. ! Why are you for making abortion illegal, but in some cases acceptable? Was the question aimed towards the Alderado campaign. Their reply: We are for making abortions illegal, because no matter if its in the womb or not, it is still a life. Omars campaign crew resounded with, If you want Ulysses to tell you what to do with your own reproductive system, then thats the way to go. ! The third question in the debate was on the matter of health care and the candidates stance. Omars team replied with: We believe that there are some very good health systems that Obama (has) put into place. They understand its not a perfect health care system that Obama put into place, but theyd like to change it for the better instead of repealing it entirely. However, Ulysses team had a completely dierent approach to the matter, We do not believe in a universal health care, because we believe in a capitalist economy. ! Theres a quote running around Omars campaign that states Legalizing all drug usage in America will save billions in law enforcement. Answer: We are not for the legalization of all drugs, just lightning of the laws surrounding some drugs, because it will save us money. Ulysses campaign crew rebutted, We agree that legalizing marijuana for medicinal use would be good, but not for all uses. ! Ulysses team was then asked the question: How will you be able to manage the use of medical marijuana? Their reply, It would be in a controlled situation, like a hospital or perhaps in the patients food. It wouldnt be used for recreational purposes. Omars team simply had this to rebut, We agree that there must be limits. ! Then Omars team was asked the question How are you going to handle the issue of gay rights? They replied, We are for the rights of all Government Gazette Americans, including gay people, and well ght for that right, though we believe that marriage is for one man and one woman alone. Ulysses opinion is slightly dierent, We want to leave it as it is, with the power given to the states to choose Debate - 1 & 2 wether or not they want to approve of that law. Editorial - 2 ! Then Ulysses team was asked what their stance with the military and Aldorado? - 3 gun rights was. We believe in not cutting the funds of the military. They also believed that laws against gun ownership should not be used. Omars team replied Wills Corner - 3 that, though they dont want to raise the amount to the troops, they do want to Poll: Gun Rights - 4 keep the spending where it is now. If we cut the spending, we would be Protestors - 5 disrespecting the troops overseas by not allowing them the things they need. ! Continued...

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 ! Then Omars team was asked what their stance was for the death penalty. Omar does not support the death penalty or the money to keep it in play. Ulysses has the same opinion as Omars campaign in this matter. ! Finally, Ulysses was asked what they were going to do about border control. We want to give the children who were illegally brought over a chance, because it wasnt their fault that their parents dragged them here. They ARE in favor of punishing the parents of said children, however. Omars response was that they wanted to put fences up along the border. By: Mariah Wills

EDITORIAL: PROTECTION? WE HAVE GUNS FOR THAT. ! The subject of gun protection is one of the few topics that I have a very strong opinion on. How are we suppose to protect our family if someone one was to break into our houses and threaten our families? We have guns for that. The Second Amendment clearly states The Right to Keep and Bear Arms. There is no other way to put it more plainly than that. This is where the Republican side of politics would come into play. They are all for this. There doesnt need to be more laws that are against people owning and using guns as a means of self defense and for personal hobbies, such as hunting. ! If these rights were taken away from our personal use, or there was certain laws that were hard to get around, myself included would be very angry with whom ever decided that it wasnt ok for protection. Weve all heard the saying, Guns dont kill people, people kill people. This rings true with crimes these days. Even if we outlawed guns people, in some way, would still be harmed. Having a gun also gives a certain type of security that everyone should be able to have, and not have to undergo a lengthy process to attain this simple right. By: Joni Nelson

ALDERADO? ALDORADO? AL DERADO?

NOVEMBER 6, 2012

! Last Friday, an anonymous tip was given to the newspaper concerning the spelling of Alderado. This misspelling was spotted on a poster that was created by Ulysses S. Alderado not Ulysses S. Aldorado. When Alissa Christoer was asked for an explanation, she bluntly responded, It doesnt matter how we spell it. Taking this into account, does this mean that Ulysses S. Alderado thinks the campaign unit is a joke? Would you support a candidate that cant even spell their own name? This hiccup may sway the opinions of many voters. WILL CORNER S ! Originating from the 2009 paranormal pictures photo contest, the idea of an abnormally tall, thin mythological creature called Slenderman was conceived. The contest was set out to use photo manipulating programs to infuse a creepy-looking character into an otherwise authentic picture. From that simple picture, came an internet legend that has made its way into forums, blogs, video games, and even its own mockumentary. Thus, Slenderman was created. ! Slenderman has no face and is depicted in a long black suit with long tentacle-like appendages crawling out of his back. Slender is known to be able to teleport and distort his body type and shape. When seen, his victims develop slendersickness, which is dened by memory loss, paranoia, insomnia, and ts of coughing. ! The victim then ends up not subject to death by Slenderman, but instead by making themselves insane. The Slenderman has become an internet sensation, and everyone should get to know him virally before they run in to him unintentionally. By: Will Norris

GUN RIGHTS ! The second Amendment clearly states that The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. With this said, every person in the U.S has rights to own a gun. The NRA is a group of 4.3 million strong members who are willing to keep guns in the hands of everyone. The NRA have had studies done that show 51% of Americans use guns for hunting, 32 % use them for protection, and the rest for small things like collecting rearms or target shooting sports. The possession of a rearm is a privilege to many people and the NRA ghts to keep that privilege around for many more years. By Adam Eral and Brady Mart

! The Government Gazette sent out another poll yesterday about gun control, but most of the student body failed to pull the trigger on their position. Barely ten people took the quiz, which is rather pitiful. Why so few? Do people not have an opinion on this topic? ! Thats doubtful; if weve learned anything during this campaign, weve learned that SLHS is full of opinions. But that still leaves the question, why didnt people vote? You have the opinion, why not share it? Well have to take into account that it was a busy day. The school was already buzzing with excitement over Fridays game, Cats was a huge hit over the weekend, and there was an altered schedule for the 2012 Class Debate. To put it simply, there was a lot going on. It wouldve been easy to miss the minute survey link in the paper or just misplace the e-mail it was attached to. Its easy to see why there wasnt a lot of response. ! Whatever the reason, people didnt vote. From the information we did get, it looks like most people are FOR gun control, but with so few votes, we cant be completely sure. Its understandable that the survey slipped the mind of the student body, but we missed your response. Our surveys dont take long, and theyre kind of fun, so well provide you the link here for your convenience: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/58FBP5G! By: Maggie Ostrum

PROTESTERS The topics of Monday afternoons debate included: abortion, healthcare, legalization of marijuana, gay rights, gun control, and border control. As the topics of the debate were being introduced, two young men stormed the stage and began to protest. They were upset that a very important issue was not going to be discussed by the candidates, Omar Ikka and Ulysses S. Alderado.

NOVEMBER 6, 2012

The protestors happened to be two young men that attend SLHS, Ethan Johnson and Hunter Davis. Ethan Johnson was arrested by ocer Daren Diers after becoming violent, while Hunter Davis was escorted o the stage by Adam Eral and Brady Mart. I was given the chance to interview the protestors. I asked them about their opinions on global warming. Hunter Davis exclaimed passionately, Global warming needs to stop, immediately! Ethan Johnson added, The warm weather is good, but its ruining the Earth! If Hunter and Ethan are this passionate about global warming, it makes sense that many other community members also share the desire to take action. Perhaps a better protest would have taken place when C.J. Kent, a representative from the Ikka campaign, stated that they opposed the death penalty because everyone has the right to live, while they previously clearly stated that theyre pro-choice! ! In order to calm future protests, we would like to know your thoughts on global warming. So please, take the following survey: http:// www.surveymonkey.com/s/58FBP5G and calm the protestors from potentially disrupting the election further. By: Ashley Riewe

! That important topic was global warming. The protestors held their ground and chanted, They dont care! It makes you wonder if the candidates actually do care about global warming seeing as it was not a topic in the debate. Its not something they have included in either of their advertisements.
