Helps Veterans
Day Evolve
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a national
holiday called Armistice Day to take place on
November 11, 1919 and annually thereafter to
commemorate the signing of the armistice treaty that
ended World War I. The holiday served to honor those
who served and lost their lives in the war. However, it
wasnt until 34 years later when a Kansas shoe store
owner proposed the holiday should be expanded to
remember all veterans, not just those of World War I.
Alfred King, a shoe store owner in Emporia, Kansas,
began a campaign to turn Armistice Day into All
Veterans Day. His towns Chamber of Commerce got
involved and participated in the cause, urging all
business owners to shut down on November 11 to
honor veterans.
U.S. Representative Ed Rees, also of Emporia, helped
push a bill through Congress, which President Dwight
Eisenhower later signed into law on May 26, 1954.
Roughly one week later Armistice was changed to
Veterans and the holiday has honored all veterans ever
since.

Celebrate 42nd Arts and
Crafts Festival
For 42 years, St. Lukes
United Methodist Church,
Martinsburg has hosted an
Annual Arts and Crafts festi-
val that has become a popu-
lar community event. This
year, it will being 9 a.m. and
close 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16,
2012 in the churchs social
hall, 700 New York Ave.,
Martinsburg.
This yearly affair features
holiday decorations, crafts,
and a not i ons t abl e.
Homemade crocheted caps,
gloves, scarves, and many
seasonal items.
Topping the homemade
sandwich lists are country
ham, chicken, cheese salad,
steamers and chili-dogs.
Soups will be chicken, with
homemade noodles and
vegetable. They will be sold
by the bowl or quart. An
assortment of pies will be
sold by the slice.
The Candy Shop also fea-
tures many homemade
chocolate favorites, includ-
ing fudges, covered raisins,
peanuts, and caramel tur-
tles. Potato candy, hard can-
dies, tiger fudge, many other
favorites. Suger free candies
will also be available.
Take out service is offered.
Some of the festivites pro-
ceeds are used for the
Churchs outreach services.
They include CCap, Meals
on Wheels, Loaves and
Fishes, Coats for kids, Shen.
Womens Ctr, Habitat for
Humanity, Rescue Mission
and Warm the Children. For
