Upgrading Module Firmware

Firmware upgrading is a routine procedure that you must perform to install newer versions of software on 6800+ modules. Pilot, Co-Pilot, or Navigator software version 3.1.1 or later is required for this procedure. The frame must contain or be connected to another frame that contains an ICE6800+ module. You can use either the Discovery or the drag-and-drop method. When performing the upgrading procedure, check the appropriate readme file to confirm which files are needed. Use care to ensure that you upload the correct files to the intended module. In the unlikely event that an upgrade fails, the module may not respond to controls and will appear to be non-functional. In that event, follow the procedures described in Correcting a Failed Upgrading Procedure on page 17.

Upgrading the Firmware

Upgrading the Firmware Using the Discovery Method Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware: 1. Download the most recent appropriate upgrade package from our Web site or from your CD-ROM. 2. If the affected module has not been discovered in CoPilot, Pilot or Navigator, perform the Discovery operation, as described in your CCS software application manual or online help. (If you cannot discover the device, see Upgrading Firmware Using the Drag-and-Drop Method on page 16.)

14

Chapter 3: Card-Edge and Parameter Operation

Operating Notes
When setting the control parameters on the QSEE6800+H, observe the following: If you make changes to certain parameters, other related parameters may also be affected. When you change a parameter, the effect is immediate. However, the module requires up to 30 seconds to save the latest change. After 30 seconds, the new settings are saved and will be restored if the module loses power and must be restarted.

Recalling Factory Default Parameter Settings

Note
Calling factory defaults resets all control parameters and alarm settings for the QSEE6800+H module and its input signals.

Table 3-1 on page 24 describes all of the parameter settings for the QSEE6800+H, including the original factory defaults. To return this module to its factory default settings, you can either reset each parameter individually or do a global recall following this procedure: 1. Rotate the hex switch to the global recall parameter F. 2. Toggle the navigation switch to On. Use an available 6800+ software control option to aid in viewing, setting, and confirming the parameter value.

Reading Software and Hardware Versions

The current software version of your QSEE6800+H module can only be viewed using a CCS-enabled control panel or a CCS software application, such as Pilot or + Pilot Lite. See your NUCLEUS Installation and Operation Manual, RCP-CCS-1U Installation and Operation Manual, CCS software application user manual, or CCS software application online help for information on viewing software and hardware version numbers.

Meaning
There is no power to the module; the module is not operational. There is power to the module; the module is operating properly. There is an alarm condition. The module has detected a hardware/ firmware fault. The module is undergoing configuration.

Alarms
Alarms are usually logged and monitored within available software control applications (for example, + Pilot Lite or Pilot). You can only identify alarms and differentiate between major and minor alarms within a software control application. See the appropriate software control user manual or online help for more information.

Note
SQM requires CCS Pilot or Navigator version 3.2 or later.

Signal Quality Management (SQM) is a system for monitoring video and audio inputs. SQM alarms appear on the QSEE6800+H Input Control windows. All alarms can be enabled or disabled, so you can choose which alarms to monitor. Each alarm is configurable with the following features: A Priority setting determines whether the alarm is major or minor. A Trigger setting determines how long an alarm condition must exist for before it is reported. A Clear setting determines how long the condition must cease to exist for before the alarm is deactivated.

34

QSEE6800+H Installation and Operation Manual

Chapter 3: Card-Edge and Parameter Operation

A Global Alarm Priority can be set for the QSEE6800+H module, and for each input to the module. (With Pilot or Navigator in Build mode, right click on the module or input and choose Configuration. The Report Alarms with Priority Greater Than: setting is on the Device tab.) If an alarms priority is at or above this setting, that alarm displays when it is triggered. Some alarms also have an associated tolerance parameter, for adjusting the level above or below which an alarm is triggered. Each alarm has an option for acknowledgement, so you can let other users on the network know that the alarm situation has been addressed. When an SQM alarm appears in the QSEE6800+H, the card-edge Module Status LED will turn red. SQM alarm names, thresholds, and other controls appear in Pilot and Navigator software only. SQM alarms are divided into three groups: QSEE6800+H SDI Video Alarms on page 37 QSEE6800+H SDI Embedded Audio Alarms on page 39 QSEE6800+H SDI Data Alarms on page 40

Unless otherwise indicated, the settings in Table 3-8 can be made for each SQM alarm within Pilot or Navigator software. Table 3-7. Alarm Options Alarm Option

CCS Operation
Overview
Note
You must have CCS Pilot or Navigator 3.2 or later to use the full features of the QSEE6800+H module.

When using CCS software, such as Pilot or Navigator, you can view a QSEE6800+H Streaming Control window. This window can contain up to 8 thumbnails, plus an MPEG-4 player if you have the QSEE6800+HS option. You can set and monitor SQM parameters and alarms for each input to the module. In addition, in Navigator you can create a Graphical Navigation window with up to 32 thumbnails and 4 MPEG-4 players (with the QSEE6800+HS option). Thumbnails can provide a visual identification for which input has triggered an alarm. This chapter assumes a basic knowledge of how to use CCS software. See the Pilot or Navigator user guides and online help for detailed information on such functions as discovery, changing modes, and using the Navigation pane. While you can discover QSEE6800+H in CCS CoPilot, you cannot view streaming video or set or monitor SQM parameters and alarms. The following topics are discussed in this chapter: CCS PC System Requirements on page 42 Discovering QSEE6800+H Modules on page 42 Controlling QSEE6800+H Modules in Pilot or Navigator on page 44 Building QSEE6800+ Pages in Navigator on page 47 Launching the QuickTime Player Outside Your CCS Software on page 53

Controlling QSEE6800+H Modules in Pilot or Navigator

There is a Control window for each QSEE6800+ module. There is also a Control window for each input to the QSEE6800+ module.

Using the QSEE6800+H Control Window

To open the QSEE6800+ modules control window, while in Control mode, double click on the QSEE6800+ module in the Navigation pane. The QSEE6800+ control window has three tabs: Stream tab (see Setting QSEE6800+ Remote Control Parameters on page 26) Display tab (see Figure 4-2) Network tab (see Multicasting on page 45)

The QSEE6800+ Specific Control window displays thumbnails for all the inputs into the module.

Chapter 4: CCS Operation

Each thumbnail has a variety of controls:

Toggles Vector Display mode Toggles Waveform Display mode Audio meters

Figure 4-3. QSEE6800+ Thumbnail Buttons Waveform and vectorscope are available on thumbnails only, not on MPEG-4 streaming video. To view a thumbnails input through the vectorscope, click V. The button turns yellow. Click V again to return to thumbnail display. To view a thumbnails input through the waveform monitor, click W. The button turns yellow. Click W again to return to thumbnail display.

To determine the line that is analyzed by the waveform or vectorscope, set the Line Number parameter in the sub-devices Control window. To view a larger waveform or vectorscope, double click on the image. A pop-up window opens. To close the window, click on the X in the top right corner. Multicasting QSEE6800+ modules use multicasting to stream thumbnails and/or MPEG-4 video simultaneously to multiple devices. Using multicasting means that a QSEE6800+ module uses the same amount of bandwidth regardless of the number of clients it transmits data to, rather than using bandwidth proportionally to a modules number of clients, as in point-to-point communication.

QSEE6800+H Installation and Operation Manual

45

Chapter 4: CCS Operation

If you have multiple QSEE6800+ modules, you must ensure that each module has an unique Multicast IP address. This is done using the Multicast IP parameter on the Stream tab of the modules Control window.

MPEG-4 stream is optional; see your sales representative for more information. Without the streaming option, a grey box will appear.

Figure 4-4. QSEE6800+ Control Window Stream Tab Any IP address from 224.0.1.0 to 239.255.255.255 is treated as a valid multicast address input. The Multicast TTL (Time-to-live) parameter determines how many network switches can exist between your device (in this case a QSEE6800+ module) and your client. Normally you should leave this setting at its default. Selecting an MPEG-4 Source With the QSEE6800+HS option, you can monitor audio meters and video for any one of the eight inputs at 30 frames per second, while simultaneously monitoring the eight thumbnail inputs. Select the MPEG-4 input using the MPEG4 Video Source parameter.

Building a QSEE6800+ Page Using the Wizard

A wizard helps you create a streaming page in Navigator (you cant make a streaming page in Pilot). Pages are built in Build mode. Follow this procedure: 1. From the main menu, choose File > New. The New Page wizard opens. 2. Click on the Quality Control tab, and then double click the Multi-Monitor View icon. The Page Wizard (step 1 of 2) opens. 3. Click Add to open a Device Selection window. 4. Select a QSEE6800+ module, or an input to a QSEE6800+ module. On the Device Selection screen, you can see all the inputs to the module. To add an individual input, choose it, and then click OK. To add all the inputs for a QSEE6800+H module, choose the module itself, and then click OK.

You can only select one item at a time. To add another item, click Add again. On the Step 1 of 2 screen, you can switch the selected input for a QSEE6800+ module by clicking the Input field. This opens a drop-down menu that lists All plus each of the individual inputs. To add multiple inputs from the same QSEE6800+, select it multiple times in the Device Selection window. Each input to any particular QSEE6800+ module can only be selected once. If, for example, you choose a QSEE6800+ module, and an input to that module, you will receive an error message. You must resolve the problem (by removing one or more inputs from the list) before you can proceed to Step 2 of 2. 5. Click Next>> to proceed to the Step 2 of 2 screen.

6. Choose the number of MPEG-4 players you wish to have on the Graphical Navigation page. You must have the QSEE6800+HS option to view video in an MPEG-4 player. If you dont have the QSEE6800+HS option, or do not wish this page to contain an MPEG-4 player, click None. If you do not choose any MPEG-4 players, there will not be any Grid Layout options. Thumbnails will be laid out from left to right, top to bottom on your Graphical Navigation page. You can only have one MPEG-4 player per QSEE6800+H, and you can have a maximum of four in Navigator. If you choose One or Two MPEG-4 players, you can choose from four preset layouts. Select an option to view a preview of it on the Step 2 of 2 screen. 7. To apply a custom background (this is optional -- you can leave it white), click Select to browse for an image. For best results, your background should be the same size as the viewing area that it will be seen on. Otherwise it will be cropped or will leave blank areas. 8. Click Finish. Your page is built. Switch to Control mode to view your page, or stay in Build mode to add or edit controls, change thumbnail sizes, etc.

Adding a QSEE6800+ Thumbnail or Stream to a Graphical Navigation Page

To add a thumbnail to any Graphical Navigation page, follow these steps: 1. In Build mode, drag a QSEE6800+H or a QSEE6800+ input node from the Navigation Pane to a Graphical Navigation page. 2. Right click on the Input icon and then choose View > Thumbnail or View > Stream (if you have the QSEE6800+HS option only). A streaming window replaces the Input icon on the Graphical Navigation page. You can reposition the window by clicking on the thumbnail or MPEG-4 stream and dragging it to a new position while holding down the mouse.

Note
When you drag a QSEE6800+ input to a page and select MPEG-4 streaming for that input, every time you open that page in Control mode, all MPEG-4 broadcasts from that module will switch to the selected input. It is usually better to drag the module to the page and then select the input on the page itself.

Pilot Lite Fails to Communicate with Installed Modules

Confirm that the following items are not the reason for the communication failure: Proper module slot has not been specified (+ Pilot Lite is not communicating with the appropriate slot). See your FR6802+ Frame Installation and Operation Manual for more information on slot identification. COM port is used elsewhere (Check that the correct COM port is configured in + Pilot Lite and that another application is not using that COM port). Actual frame ID does not match with the two DIP switch settings in the back of the frame (+ Pilot Lite is not communicating with the proper frame). See your FR6802+ Frame Installation and Operation Manual for more information on frame ID switch settings. Null modem cable is not being used. Between the PC running + Pilot Lite and the FR6802+ frame, there should be a null RS-232 modem cable. At minimum, this requires that pins 2 and 3 are crossed and 5 to 5 for ground. ICE6800+ module is installed in the frame (+ Pilot Lite control is disabled if an ICE6800+ module is installed in the frame; ICE6800+ modules are used for CCS control). A legacy 6800 series product is in the frame. + Pilot Lite cannot communicate with legacy 6800 series products. They will not be discovered or controlled by + Pilot Lite, although they can be installed in the FR6802+ frame and work using card edge controls. The module must be from the 6800+ product family. Check that the back module does not have any bent pins, following this procedure: a. Unplug the front module. b. Unscrew and remove the back module.

QSEE6800+H Installation and Operation Manual

63

Appendix A: Communication and Control Troubleshooting Tips

c. View the 20-pin spring connector at the bottom of the back module.( See Figure A-1.)

20-pin connector

Figure A-1. Back Module to Front Module Connector This connector should not have any bent or pressed pins. Even a slightly depressed or bent pin may cause genlock issues. d. If there are bent pins, carefully reposition them to their correct positions. If this is not possible, contact Customer Service to exchange the back module. +

Pilot Lite Does Not Find All Modules in Frame

If a discovery is started too soon after frame power-up, + Pilot Lite will not find all the installed modules. Refresh + Pilot Lite (File > Refresh), and ensure that installed modules are fully powered-up first before discovery. If a module is plugged into the frame after a discovery, + Pilot Lite does not automatically detect the module. Refresh + Pilot Lite (File > Refresh) to discover the newly installed module. If a Legacy 6800 series product is in the frame, + Pilot Lite will not detect it. + Pilot Lite cannot communicate with legacy 6800 series products. They will not be discovered or controlled by + Pilot Lite although they can be installed in the FR6802+ frame and work using card edge controls. For + Pilot Lite to find a module, it must be from the 6800+ product family.

Pilot Lite or CCS Software Application Not Responding

+ Pilot Lite and CCS applications such as Navigator or Pilot cannot run on the same PC at the same time. Both applications can be installed, but only one can be opened at a time.

Pilot Lite Cannot Control a Module Showing in the Control Window

Check the following: Did you physically set the jumper for local control? If so, set this jumper to the REM position for remote control. Does the card name in the control window physically match the card type in the frame? Is the module properly seated in the frame? Check the positioning of the module in its slot in the frame. Does the Control window indicate the device is ready? The device may be powered off or disconnected from the network.

Pilot Lite Status Bar Reports Not Ready

+ Pilot Lite reports each devices connection status in the status bar. If the connection status message reads Not Ready, check the following: Is the module properly seated in the frame? Check the position of the module in the frame. Is the frame connected to the network? Check the devices network connection.

If the status bar still reports no status or Not Ready for the frame or device, try restarting + Pilot Lite.

CCS Software Application or Remote Control Panel Does Not Communicate with Module
CCS software applications (such as Pilot, CoPilot, and Navigator) and remote control panels require the purchase and installation of an ICE6800+ module in an FR6802+ frame in order to communicate remotely via Ethernet.

Alarm Query Fails When a Device Reboots

When you reboot a device connected to your PC, the alarm traffic hitting the network may cause an alarm query request to time out and fail. While the query does not automatically retry, it will post an Alarm query failed message to the Diagnostics window. To clear an Alarm query failed message, right-click inside the Diagnostics window, and then select Refresh from the resulting context menu.
