Standards:
2.2 The student will compare the lives and contributions of 3 American ndian
cultures of the past and present with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern
Woodland, the Lokota of the Plains and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest.

Materials needed:
Preparation:
Before lesson begins find and gather information, such as books, websites,
and/or videos on each tribe. Load on each student computer websites that
students will access for their research.
Day 1-5 30-45 min: Students should have interactive notebooks and should
add Powhatan KWL to their table of contents along with the page # where
that information will be found. On the appropriate page students should divide
their page into thirds and label each section with K-W-L. Ask them to fill out
the K section with things they know about the Powhatan ndians. Ask a few
students to share what they know. Ask students to think of what they want to
learn about the Powhatans. Have a few students share their ideas. All students
must fill in at least 3 things in each category for K & L. Once KWL is completed
have students add it to their interactive notebook. Have them add Powatan
2.2 to their table of contents in their nteractive Notebooks. They also need
to add the page #, it should just be the next available blank page after KWL.
ntroduce Powhatan ndians with video that shows how the Powhatan lived
and how they used their environment to survive. f time allots have student turn
and talk with someone near them about what they saw in the video. Choose
some students or pairs to share what they saw and make a chart on the Smart
Board. Have students transfer those ideas to their page in their interactive
notebooks. Students should use all the resource provided by the teacher to
find information on how native Americans traveled, what their homes were built
from, what their diet consisted of and what region they lived in. t should take
approximately one week per tribe. At the end of the 3 weeks, students should
have compiled enough information to create their presentation.
Assessment:
A PowerPoint template will be provided for those students who need it. Also for
those students who opt to use a poster board instead of PowerPoint, posters
will be available.
