building Peels water capacity

A feedermain is a large-diameter watermain that carries water from one reservoir or pumping station to another.

What is a subtransmission main?

What is the Hanlan Water Project?

The Hanlan Water Project includes installing the 2,400-mm (2.4 metres or 8 feet) diameter Hanlan Feedermain and the 1,500-mm (1.5 metres or 5 feet ) diameter Mississauga City Centre Subtransmission Watermain. Construction will be done in two ways: Open cut Digging a trench and installing the water pipe Tunnelling Using specialized equipment to excavate beneath the road surface and installing the water pipe between two shafts

A subtransmission main carries water from a pumping station to smaller, local distribution watermains. Distribution watermains are the same as those that feed your house or business.

Mayors Message to Residents:

The Region of Peel provides the residents of Mississauga, Brampton and parts of Caledon with clean, safe drinking water. As the Region grows, a larger amount of water is needed to be delivered reliably to homes, businesses and institutions. To meet these increased water demands, including those of the vibrant, emerging Mississauga City Centre core, the Region has begun the Hanlan Water Project, the largest water infrastructure project undertaken to date. Construction includes the Hanlan Feedermain and the Mississauga City Centre Subtransmission Main. The new feedermain provides capacity for expansion and urban intensication within the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel, and allows the Region to keep its commitments to its State of Good Repair Program. It also helps to fulll the Region's obligations to York Region, made under the 2002 York-Peel Water Supply Agreement. Any construction can affect trafc. However, the Region of Peel has developed a comprehensive trafc management plan to ensure trafc ow is maintained in each direction. Staff are committed to keeping you informed about construction, and to keeping trafc moving as smoothly as possible. The City of Mississauga supports the Hanlan Water Project as it will help to ensure that you, your family and your community continue to receive the water services you expect, while enabling the Region to provide for future growth. Sincerely, HAzel McCAllIon, C.M., ll.D. MAYoR

Getting around during construction

Plan your route through the construction zone with: Drivers Hotline at 1-855-hanlan1 (1-855-426-5261) tells commuters where and when construction is happening and suggests alternate routes Twitter @hanlanwp gives you regular trafc updates Our website - www.hanlanwaterproject.ca - is updated regularly with construction news Electronic Sign Boards will be posted around construction routes to tell drivers about trafc delays and detours

How were keeping you informed

We will: Send newsletters to residents, businesses and interested stakeholders. If you know someone who should be included on our mailing list, please call us at 905-791-7800, ext 5078 or email us at hanlanwp@peelregion.ca Deliver public notices to residents and businesses before we start work in the area Provide Ward Councillors with project updates to include in their newsletters or website. You will also nd us at your Councillors open houses and community fairs

Local distribution works

How much water is that?
To maximize construction efciency and minimize future disruptions, we will replace local distribution watermains while we construct the Hanlan Water Project. Most local distribution work will be open-cut and pipe diameters will vary from 150-mm (6 inches) to 600-mm (24 inches). In the South Section, we will also: Improve Dixie Road from the QEW to Blundell Road while local watermains are being replaced Install a 300-mm (12 inch) sanitary sewer on Dixie Road from Larchview Trail to just north of CNR underpass Close the Larchview Sewage Pumping Station Thats enough to ll 408 Olympic swimming pools - every single day! When its completed the Hanlan Water Project will: Move 400 million litres of water each day through the Hanlan Feedermain Move 120 million litres of water each day through the Mississauga City Centre Subtransmission Watermain

Is your street affected?

Check our website at hanlanwaterproject.ca under Schedule & Construction Update, Local Distribution Works.

What are we up to now?

South Section: We have installed approximately 300 metres of the 2400-mm Hanlan Feedermain on Lakefront Promenade from Lakeview Water Treatment Plant to Lakeshore Road East. North Section: A section of the MCC Subtransmission Main just north of the intersection of Cawthra Road and Burnhamthorpe Road is being installed later this fall. The work is being done as part of the City of Mississaugas Burnhamthorpe Road Reconstruction Project and is expected to be completed by February 2013. During the construction, lanes on Cawthra Road north of Burnhamthorpe Road will be affected in the following ways: The right-hand southbound turn lane on Cawthra Road will be closed The two southbound lanes on Cawthra Road will remain open during peak hours* The right-hand southbound lane on Cawthra Road will be closed during nonpeak hours *7-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m., Monday to Friday

When will construction happen in your neighbourhood?

A large part of the work is expected to begin next spring, 2013, and will be completed in sections over the following two and a half to three years. Construction should be completed by mid-2016. Some local distribution works will start this fall and will be nished earlier than the work for the Hanlan Feedermain and MCC Subtransmission Main. If we will be in your neighbourhood, we will let you know well ahead of time and will keep you updated while work is taking place. You may notice the following activities before we start construction: We will mark the location of gas, hydro, cable, etc. on roads, driveways and lawns We may drill boreholes to determine ground conditions We may survey your street We will take pictures to help us make sure we restore the area to its former condition We are improving walking and cycling facilities along the Hanlan Water Project route in conjunction with the City of Mississauga Cycling Master Plan and the Peel Active Transportation Plan. Were working with the City of Mississauga to build a multi-use trail along: Dixie Road from north of the QEW to Eastgate Parkway Tomken Road from Eastgate Parkway to Britannia Road Cawthra Road from Meadows Boulevard to Burnhamthorpe Road Want to know more about trails and cycling in Peel?
