Challengers unseat incumbents in Ottawa County Commissioner and Coroner races

In the most heavily contested Ottawa County race JoEllen Regal was elected County Commissioner over Republican incumbent Mark Stahl. Regal received 11,270 votes (53.7 %) to Stahls 9,718 (46.3%). Republican County Comissioner Steve Arndt was re-elected 11,906 (57%) over John Huffman 8,853 (43%). First, I am going to celebrate tonight. I am excited. I am glad it is over, said Regal. In January I want to talk to department heads to see what they need the Commissioners to do. County Commissioner Jim Sass welcomed Jodi Regal and said, Having a womans perspective will be helpful and interesting. Jodi brings a lot of experience to the position. I am looking forward to (working with Jodi). Sass also emphasized that, The D and R have to take a back seat. We need to just do the right things. Dr. Daniel Cadigan was elected County Coroner over Republican incumbent Dr. Jerome McTague, 13,558 ( 65%) to 7,165 (35%). When asked what would be the first thing he would do, he replied, First, I am going to celebrate my sons 12th birthday tomorrow. He was born on Election Day in 2000. Then, in January, I am going to line up things to get a Deputy Coroner, so we can be accountable again. Former County Commissioner Carl Koebel reacted to Cadigans election by saying, I am not afraid to die now that we have a coroner. Jodi Regal reacts to the news of her election

Ohio puts Obama over the top again

BY DONNA LUEKE In every election since 1944, Ottawa County has been a predictor of the winner of the presidential election, and so again in 2012. Stretching from Clay Center to the Marblehead Lighthouse, the longest county in Ohio extended its longest-in-Ohio-counties winning streak of picking the President of the United States. At 9:14 p.m., with all precincts reporting, the unofficial Ottawa County results were announced. Barack Obama and Joe Biden received 11,214 votes (51%) to 10,323 (47%) for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. A little more than an hour later, networks began to announce that President Obama was projected to take Ohios electoral votes, and so had been re-elected. 72% of registered voters in Ottawa County cast ballots in this years heavily contested election. President Obama, Jack Nicklaus, Crystal Bowersox and Mitt Romneys son Matt all campaigned in Ottawa County this election season. Obamas Organizing for America group brought in field organizers from California and New York to energize local volunteers and supporters to persuade undecided voters and get out the vote for Obama/Biden. A woman with local connections drove up from Texas to volunteer and help canvas for Obama/Biden. Ottawa Countys numbers also predicted/ reflected the results in Ohio races for Senate and Representative. In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown received 11,019 votes (50 %) to Josh Mandels 9,657 (44%). U.S. House Representative Marcy Kaptur, Democrat, was also re-elected. In Ottawa County she received 6,783 (59%)of the votes to Samuel Wurzelbachers 4,328 (38%). Gabe DeFreitas, 15, of Port Clinton has been working on the Brown and Kaptur campaigns since May. His reaction to their re-election was simply, I am so happy. Now I need to catch up on my homework.

ONCE AGAIN OTTAWA COUNTY IS A PREDICTOR OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The State Races

Republican Bob Latta was re-elected as Representative to Congress from the 5th District. Republican Randy Gardner was re-elected as Senator from the 2nd District. Democrat Chris Redfern was elected as State Representative for the 89th District.

The Tax Levys

Tax Levys in Elmore, Genoa, Marblehead, Oak Harbor, Benton Township, Salem Township, Port Clinton and for Woodmore all passed. The Mid-County Ambulance District and Portage Township Sunday Sales both passed. Democrats gathered at Port Clinton Yacht Club to await election results.

PCHS Band gets standing ovation at OSU

Most of you know that I have lived here most of my life (50 years) and that I am a proud graduate of Port Clinton High School. Every now and then an event happens that just fills me with pride. Such a moment happened on Sunday when I viewed the thrilling video of the Port Clinton High School Marching Band performing Fat Bottom Girl during the Skull Session at St. John Arena at THE Ohio State University last Saturday. When the crowd and the OSU Marching Band rise as one to give our kids a standing ovation, chills go up my spine! It was well deserved because these kids put out quite a sound and put on one helluva show. Congrats to Director Rod Miller and the PCHS Marching Band. We have the entire video posted online at www.thebeacon.net. Check it out. It will send chills up and down your spine too.

Speaking of graduates of PCHS, old friend Gary Quisno, who retired from coaching a couple of years ago, is back. He is the offensive coordinator for the Perkins High School football team who will be playing Bellevue this weekend in the State Playoffs. Rumor has it he is having a great time. Perkins has certainly had quite a season.

This year, the Kroger Company contributed nearly all of the food and paper products. Special thanks to Alan Faust from the corporate office in Cincinnati and Robert Sears, manager of the local Port Clinton Kroger who coordinated the necessary details with John Starcher. Starcher has directed the annual dinner for several years. The Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department sincerely appreciates the generosity of the Kroger Company, who shared their resources of time and talents in making the spaghetti dinner a huge success. All funds and revenues go toward providing quality fire and emergency service protection, to purchase equipment for fire and EMS services. Red Cross works for hurricane Sandy relief

To date the American Red Cross of NW Ohio has deployed 16 locally trained disaster services volunteers to help with the response to Hurricane Sandy. Larry Coats of Elmore was one of the first on the road driving the Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) to New Jersey to wait out the storm then transport supplies, meals and other needed items to the impacted areas as soon as routes were open and safe. Many more will deploy in the next several days. Mary Gangway Snyder of Marys Blossom Shoppe, 125 Madison Street, Port Clinton, has announce that the Shoppe is offering a special to benefit the Red Crosss efforts to respond to Hurricane Sandy. During the month of November she will donate $5 of each $10 wrapped cash and carry fall bouquet to the American Red Cross. On Sunday afternoon Vice President Joe Biden, his wife Dr. Jill Biden and members of their family attended a campaign rally at Terra State College in Fremont. According to Fremont Chief of Police Timothy Wiersma, there were 1,550 people at the rally. Vice President Biden has traveled to Ohio 11 times in 2012, but this is the first time in the Fremont-Port Clinton area and the first time Dr. Biden has traveled to Ohio for a campaign event. The pledge of allegiance was led by James Bill Kelly, a World War II veteran who supports President Obama and Vice President Biden because he feels they are working to make sure veterans get the benefits they earned. The invocation was given by Rector Daniel Orr of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, who is supporting Obama-Biden because he believes their policies are helping those most in need. The national anthem was sung by Carrie-Atla DeChamplain of the University of Toledo, who is supporting Obama-Biden because their policies have helped her pay back her student debt. Jason Mraz, Grammy award winning singer-songwriter and Obama-Biden supporter, entertained the appreciative crowd, beginning with his hit single Im Yours. After being introduced by Dr. Biden. the Vice President reinforced the messages that the campaign has been delivering and encouraged the supporters to get out the vote in the next two days.

PCHS Marching Band plays at OSU Skull Session

Port Clinton High School Marching Band played at the Ohio State University Marching Band Skull Session as a featured guest band, Nov. 3, prior to the OSU vs. Illinois football game. The OSU Marching Band performed at a Friday night football game at Port Clinton High School while en route to the OSU vs. Michigan State football game earlier in the year. Santa Shop at R.C. Waters

Together in Education (TIE), the parent- teacher group at R.C. Waters Elementary, will be hosting The Santa Shop on Friday, Dec. 14. At the Santa Shop, students can purchase gifts for family, friends and pets in the safety and convenience of their own school. Businesses that wish to participate can reserve an eight foot table in the gym at RC Waters. Items for sale should be priced $1-$5. TIE will provide small white lunch sacks for the students to use to wrap their gifts. The goal is that the children learn the importance of saving money, shopping local, and planning their purchases in a positive learning environment. TIE feels that it is important to support local businesses and economy. There are 475 students in R.C. Waters School, plus teachers & staff. The charge to vendors is $10 per table, to help with the cost of hosting the Santa Shop. The event will run from approximately 8:10 a.m-2:30 p.m., with setup available prior to the event. TIE will provide lunch for all vendors. The Santa Shop Committee will review and confirm all table reservations due to the limited number of tables/space and to avoid like-type businesses. Vendors who want additional information or to reserve a table can contact Valerie Winterfield at the Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce, 161 W. Water St., Suite A, Oak Harbor, 43449, or LIKE on Facebook at Together in Education (TIE).

Genoa Six
Nowadays what are six teenage boys to do on a Saturday afternoon in Genoa? A certain group of enterprising young men, the Genoa 6, volunteer for the reelection campaign of President Obama. Jason Helle, 17, a senior at Genoa High School, got together five of his buddies to run the neighborhood team for the Presidents campaign in his community. As neighborhood team lead, Helle is responsible for turning out the vote for the President in Genoa and in precincts in western Ottawa County. Helles initial goal as neighborhood team lead was to deliver 250 votes for President Obama, which he far exceeded. He has been so successful in organizing and recruiting volunteers that he was asked to take on additional responsibilities in other parts of Ottawa County. During the first Get-out-theVote weekend event, Helle directed the Port Clinton staging location and reported numbers to the campaign. Helles core team operates like a band of brothers. The Genoa 6 include John Belsky, 16, Clay Parlette, 18, Jacob Cameron, 17, Nick Mortensen, 17, and Carlito Avila, 18. A main staging base of operations of the Genoa 6 is Helles garage. Members of the Genoa 6 fit their political activities between school and extracurricular activities, sports and hanging out. Youth participation helps make connections and transmit information faster and in new and creative ways through social media. The Genoa 6 are directed and highly motivated students who are up on their current events. They know the issues in society that matter, and sometimes find themselves awakening their peers to voting. Helle states, The Presidents policies for social equality and middle class opportunities make for a better America for my generation. This also sets an example for future generations worldwide. The Genoa 6 are currently applying to college and looking to new horizons.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, Bodi-N-Balance at Harbor Light Landing, Port Clinton, hosted WillPower & Grace Phase 1 instructor certification training. Jennifer Deluccia, a master trainer from the WillPower Method, came from New Jersey to teach this new form of exercise. WillPower & Grace is a class with a philosophy. WillPower is the strength or will to carry out ones decisions, wishes, or plans, and Grace is the elegance or beauty of form, manner, motion, or action. Together they form the philosophy of WillPower & Grace creator Stacey Lei Krauss. Jennifer Deluccia displayed both of these attributes just by getting to Port Clinton. Bodi-N-Balance will be offering a WillPower and Grace class after the new year. The class is a barefoot class and focuses on foot strength. It gives the cardiovascular

workout of Zumba or kickboxing and the strength training of Crossfit or BootCamp, with the mindfulness of yoga and Pilates. Trevor Tieche, owner of Bodi-N-Balance, said, We are grateful to creator Stacey Lei Krauss and her extensive team for choosing Port Clinton as a place to launch yet another exciting new group fitness program in Ohio. One year ago the creator of IndoRow, Josh Crosby, brought his program to two locations in Ohio. One was the Ohio State University, and the other was Bodi-N-Balance. Tieche has been working to continually educate his employees and the community about the ever changing world of fitness. For more information on WillPower and Grace, IndoRow or other group fitness classes, contact Bodi-N-Balance at 419732-1000 or visit www.bodinbalance.com.

The Beacon

a Listening Room Special Presentation

November 9th & 10th

Trent Jeffcoat was told he would never walk again after a car accident in 1997 left him paralyzed from a broken neck and severe spinal cord injury. If you had bet on the doctors prognoses, you would have been wrong. Just as wrong as if you had told him he was foolish to pack up his family and move to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue music. Whats right is everything Jeffcoat has been doing since. From the moment he was up and walking around again, a mere six months after the accident Jeffcoat deems a life-altering experience, he decided he was going to pursue his dream of singing country music professionally. His renewed faith in God left him with no other choice. He knew firsthand that life could change drastically in the blink of an eye, and he didnt want to postpone his goals any longer. Another major reason was the birth of his son, Walk er, in 2002. After Walker was born, I decided I really needed to pursue country music full-time because I want my son to always pursue his dreams and Im showing him, by example, that it is important, Jeffcoat explains. One year after making that pledge, Jeffcoat, along with wife Whitnei (his high school sweetheart) and one-year-old son Walker made the move to Nashville and havent looked back. We knew that if we didnt move to Nashville and follow our hearts, wed regret it for the rest of our lives, he states. With his family as his most supportive and loyal fans, Jeffcoat has been pursuing music in Nashville full-time for several years and not without quite a bit of success. This country boy has survived tremendous odds up to this point. With his kind smile and trademark southern hospitality, Jeffcoat will continue to entertain us while he pushes forward, nurturing his dreams and seeing them come alive.

Still Time to Set Up Owner-only 401 (k) for 2012

If youre a small-business owner, with no full-time employees (except possibly your spouse or business partner), youre probably used to taking care of just about everything on your own. So, if youre thinking of establishing a retirement plan and you should you might also be attracted to going solo with an Owner-only 401(k). An Owner-only 401(k), sometimes known as an Individual 401(k), has been around for a few years now, and has proven quite popular and with good reason. This plan is easy to establish, easy to administer and, most importantly, gives you many of the same benefits enjoyed by employees of a company that offers a traditional 401(k) plan. These benefits include the following: Tax deferred earnings Your earnings arent taxed as they accumulate. Tax deductible contributions An Owner-only 401(k) consists of two components salary deferral and profit sharing contributions, both of which are generally 100 percent tax deductible. If you choose to make Roth salary deferrals to your Owneronly 401(k), your contributions arent deductible, but you wont pay taxes on your earnings, provided you dont take withdrawals until youre 59-1/2 and its been five years since your first year of Roth deferral. Variety of investment choices You can choose to fund your Owner-only 401(k) with a wide range of investments. And you can construct an investment mix thats appropriate for your risk tolerance and long-term goals. Furthermore, an Owner-only 401(k) can potentially allow you to make greater contributions, at an identical income level, than other small-business retirement plans, such as a SEP IRA. In 2012, you can defer up to $17,000, or $22,500 if youre 50 or older (as long as you dont exceed 100 percent of your income). Then, in addition, you can make a profit-sharing contribution equal to 25 percent of your income (slightly less if you are unincorporated). So, by combining the salary deferral and profit-sharing components, you can potentially contribute up to $50,000 to your Owner-only 401(k) in 2012, or $55,000 if youre 50 or older. And these figures are doubled if your spouse also contributes to the Owner-only 401(k). However, youre not obligated to contribute anything to your plan. So, if your business is slow one year, you might scale back your contributions, or put in nothing at all. Then, when business picks up again, you can get back toward contributing whatever you can afford, up to the maximum. Clearly, the Owner-only 401(k) can offer you some key advantages in building resources for retirement. But its not the only small-business retirement plan on the market, so, before you make a decision, you may want to consult with your tax and financial advisors to determine if an Owner-only 401(k) is indeed the right plan for you. But dont wait too long. Youll have to establish your Owner-only 401(k) by Dec. 31 if you want to receive any tax deductions for 2012. And in any case, the sooner you start putting money away, the faster the progress you will make toward the retirement lifestyle youve envisioned. The OSS Solid Waste District announces that Diane Ball has joined the agency as the Ottawa County Education Specialist. Dianes office is based out of Port Clinton at the Ottawa County Courthouse. She is responsible for visiting all of the Ottawa County Schools, educating students about the importance of recycling and litter prevention. The District employs a total of three edu- BALL cation specialists, each covering their schools in the three counties Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca. Prior to joining the District, Diane worked as a substitute aide, secretary and librarian for the Port Clinton City School District. Diane also has been a volunteer parent at all of the District-sponsored summer Earth Camps. The variety of experience in Dianes past work experience, especially in the classroom setting, pushed her to the top of the list, said Assistant Director Amy Drummer. Diane has really hit the ground running and is preparing to get back in the classrooms to get the recycling message to our students. Any schools, scout troops, 4-H Clubs or any other type of youth organization may schedule programs or a visit with the Districts mascot, Myrtle the Turtle, by contacting Diane Ball by phone 419-734-6783 or email dball@ recycleoss.org. For any questions about recycling opportunities in Ottawa County or throughout the 3-county area you may visit the District website, www.recycleoss.org.

Magruder Hospital Board of Trustees appoint Interim CEO

The Magruder Hospital Board of Trustees Chairman, Paul Druckenmiller, has announced that Todd Almendinger, the current Vice-President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Magruder, has been appointed Interim CEO of the hospital. The appointment occurred following the recent resignation of Michael E. Long as President & CEO of the hospital. DRUCKENMILLER Mike has been with Magruder Hospital over twenty years and we value the contributions he has made toward the success of this hospital. We respect the decision he has made and wish him well on his future endeavors, says Druckenmiller. Druckenmiller commented on the Boards decision to appoint Todd Almendinger as Interim CEO of Magruder. Todd is a proven leader at Magruder and in the community. He has been part of the hospitals senior leadership team for six years and the Board is confident in his abilities as Interim CEO. Magruder is a successful organization because of the leadership and support of all who work here, not just a few, and that certainly remains the case today. When asked if a search for a new CEO would begin, Druckenmiller commented The Board will now begin to consider the appropriate steps for the future. Almendinger came to Magruder in 2006 after being the Vice-President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio, for eighteen years. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Business Administration from Bowling Green State University and is a member of the Health Care Financial Management Association and the American College of Health Care Executives.

The office, located in the Veterans Memorial Building, 8444 Ohio 163, is staffed by a Executive Director/Senior Service Officer (who is currently deployed with the United States Navy Reserve), Assistant Service Officer, Administrative Assistant, Intake/Outreach Specialist who assists with financial assistance applications and outreach and four drivers who transport veterans to the VA medical appointments. There are two healthcare clinics in the area, Toledo and Sandusky. If a veteran chooses the Toledo Clinic, they are sent to the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center in Michigan for major testing/procedures. If they choose the Sandusky Clinic, they are sent to Wade Park VA Medical Center in Cleveland for major testing/procedures. Their primary care physician would be at the clinic and not the medical centers. When veterans return from Active Duty, there are ceremonies held, as they are also held prior to their deployments, that educate them on the potential benefits available to them. Returning service-members are also pointed towards their local veterans service organizations. Community members are always needed to support veterans. The Ottawa County organizes outreach events throughout the year, including the Ottawa County Fair, Senior Days, speaking engagements, Veteran Stand Down, etc. One of their largest outreach avenues is word of mouth For more information, call Sara Toris at 419-898-2089, fax 419-898-3067, or access the website at www.co.ottawa. oh.us/veterans.

Harold Fillmore to be inducted into Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame

The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame will induct the Class of 2012 in a ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 8 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton. 15 Ohioans in this years class are joining the 428 others who are enshrined in the Hall. The Hall is dedicated to recognizing Ohio veterans who, after their military service, put their skills and abilities to work in their local communities and by their continued service and positive accomplishments, inspired their fellow citizens. This will be a great day to honor 15 Ohioans who have served both their country and community, particularly in such a distinctive venue as the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, surrounded by exhibits honoring other great men and women whove served our nation, said Tom Moe, Director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and a 2009 inductee of the Hall. The men and women were honoring in the Hall of Fames Class of 2012 represent one of the greatest things about our veterans community that when someone leaves the military, they very often continue to serve. This years inductees include Harold Fillmore of Oak Harbor. Fillmore is a United States Navy veteran of World War II has served 58 years in local veterans organizations and as a civic official and volunteer. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and taught patriotism and positive values. He designed and built veterans burial flag cases and spearheaded the design and construction of a veterans memorial. He also spearheaded a project to plant trees throughout Oak Harbor to bring a sense of civic pride and awareness of local history to the community.
