Islamic Art Museum Malaysia ( IAMM ) Background

The background basically can be describe as follow:

Design Concept

The emphasis on the design is to identify elements that can almost immediately display
a completely convincing unity of form in Islam that has an would maintain itself over
centuries.

Square Kufic:

The square kufic represent the Calligraphy Arts in Islam would that consist the variety

types of communications and writing skills based on the culture, presentations

meanings and ecstatic value. The kufic Calligraphy been used the for the Museum

Souvenir Shop and other retail operations that bring the meaning of Islamic Arts

Museum Malaysia in Arabic version.

Dome Shape:

The Dome of the Rock (Al – Aqsa Mosque) in Jerusalem is the most ancient Islamic

Monument built between 688 and 692 AD still surviving in a taste of complete

preservation. A striking peace of symbolism sacred to Muslim as the rock shelters a

cave through which the Prophet ascended to the sky. The Dome of the Rock is

architecturally quite unique and represents a work of Islamic art in its earliest forms
illustrated by a geometric mosaic designs that adorned the interior drum of The Dome

Geometric Patents

Geometric elements play a fundamental role in Islamic arts and designs. It is the art of

combining the multiple and the diverse, or unity in multiplicity to express the universe

based upon logic and order. The ten - sided polygon derived from a circle in the centre

of the dome shaped outline of the logo represents the foundation of all Islamic art forms

that are preserved in Muslim . The four- sided polygons radiated out and are met point

to point by equal number of six- sided geometric polygons. Repetitions are

characteristics fundamental the Islamic arts as well as literature and music. It

expresses a need for intense visual stimulation and the Islamic search for unity. In the

logo the four- sided polygons represents the search for the arts from all over the world,

and the six- sided polygons the discoveries to be preserved in the Museum.

Color
The color gold and black used in the design of logo consistent with the “kawah” or

vesture of Islam’s holiest shrine. The Ka’aba in Mecca.

Typeface
Garamond typeface is used for the name of the Museum in both Bahasa Malaysia and

English. Positioned directly beneath the dome shape the words “Malaysia” immediately

after to reflect a museum of international standard.


Organization Chart General
( focus on promotion / marketing department )

The administrative and common structure of IAMM organization is tabulated in the


organization chart . It notifies about the departments , the list of employees and their job
title . The overall management of the museum is under the charge of the Museum
Director . Every department has its own head and followed by the staffs . They are as
follows :
(Management A Grade A!)

1. Administration Assistant

Divided into several strengths, Tuan Syed Mohamad Al-Bukhari is The Museum
Director, followed by The Finance Director Puan Sharifah Al-Bukhari is
responsible in finance and accounting including purchasing, cost control and
employee salary. Operational Director Cik hamidah Non concern on every
museum operation department including Maintenance Department, Education
Department, Museum Keeper, Security, Customer Service and Marketing
Department and ensure everything accordingly to the Standard Operational
Procedure.

(Management B Grade A2)

2. Customer Service Department (Front Desk)

This department is under responsibility of Marketing department. Their duties are


divided into 4 general categories:

I. Customer relation

II. Concierge

III. Cashier Services

IV. Tourist guide

Customer service main duty is to manning the counter beside entertained the
guest or visitor and must be polite, courteous with warm hospitality with wide
knowledge on the museum set up. The customer service staff are: officer in
charge, cashier and guest relation assistant.

3. Museum Keeper Department


This department is headed by Encik Abdul Rahman. Area allotted for this
department are:

I. Public Area
II. Officers
III. Staircase and Corridor
IV. Auditorium
V. Windows and Glassless
VI. Main lobby and Entrance
VII. Galleries

4. Maintenance Department
En Mazlan is the manager concern for this department. Supervise his
subordinates in any maintenance working progress in the building.

5. Human Resource Department


This department is commonly responsible to recruit and select suitable
candidates to fill vacancies, keep and update records of employee and trainees.
It also responsible for the staffs welfare, salary, administration and training
development. This department must ensure the trainee is well trained staffs have
opportunities to grow in the organization. It short is to recruit, retain, training, look
after well being and administer the employees leaving on retirement or otherwise.

6. Graphic and Design


The responsibility of designing the brochures, including the souvenir, signage,
banner and also the manual guide for the employee and visitors.

7. Event and Marketing Department


The duties of this department is to promote and to market by advertising and
promoting perhaps collaborating process with other potential customer from local
inclusive government and private sector or foreigner.

No serious violation against the theoretical concepts was observed here.


Customer Service Department has a good connection with marketing also Event
Department. Here I learn a lot of short cut in order to perform the task and daily
activities. Below are listed some of the minor observation:
I. The arrival of tour or visits didn’t update in the system that may cause late of
arrangement for the tour guiding.
II. The CS staffs who suppose to do the gallery checking didn’t do exactly on
the appropriate time.
III. Few procedure and checklist are not in compliance to theory.
IV. Most of the time the officer in charge did not performs as in theory.
V. Lack of hospitality elements while manning the counter or handling the
visitors.

8. Curatorial Department
Headed by Mr. Lucien De Guise, and the main responsibility of this department is
come out with a fact precisely throughout the research of the artifacts and
findings before keep in the display units, besides publishing the book about the
museum and the interest of their findings that related with Islamic world, culture
and heritage.
9. Conservation Department
Under supervise by Ms. Josephine, since the arrival of the artifacts then through
the cleaning process, preserve and conserve before entering to the display unit
then to the gallery.

10. Education Department


Headed by Cik Noraiza as the Assistance Manager of Education Department and
a lot of education program such as school visit & tour, Islam calligraphic “Khat”
workshop, Tile painting “Iznik” safari and also the Children’s Library (story telling
sessions).

11. Retail Outlet (Museum Shop)


Headed by Cik Halawah that concern in the retail operations and also
responsible for purchasing antique goods, souvenirs, books, merchandise,
accessories, learning manuals and stationery.

12. Food and Beverage (Museum Restaurant)


Lead by Pn Ithzafeena together with the Executive Chef, Chef Aiman from Iran
which perform the best Middle East cuisine and also the ambiance of Arabian
Morocco as the interior.
