A. Subject Description The Government of the Republic of the Philippines is a product of Philippine History. Legally speaking, it was established by the Philippine Constitution. The Philippine Constitution, which is considered as the most important historical document in the country, is defined as the written instrument by which the fundamental powers of the government are established, limited, and defined and by which these powers are distributed among the several departments or branches for their safe and useful exercise for the benefit of the people. (Malcolm) In this course, provisions of the Philippine Constitution will be analyzed in light of the HISTORY OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE. In a nutshell, this course is a study of the Philippine Political History. B. Objectives At the end of the course, the students should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Define and be familiarized with the basic terminologies and principles commonly used in the study of Philippine history, politics and governance; Explain, discuss, analyze, synthesize or evaluate, as the case may be, such terminologies or principles using their own words; Develop keen awareness and understanding of the operation of the government with the context of the Philippine History and the Philippine Constitution; Apply certain provisions of the Philippine Constitution in resolving selected actual political and justiciable questions. Be acquainted with the basic Constitutional rights and to be responsible in the exercise thereof; Illustrate the mechanics of government and politics and the basic provisions of the Constitution using significant events in Philippine History; and, Live a life of a functional citizen under our democratic government.
