Lesson Title: comparing and contrasting two fairytales (Projected/Current Unit of Study): Fairy Tales

ELA Standard(s): Learning Objectives: (Students will:) - Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text - Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g., opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g., the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures. - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 13 above.) Students will use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast Snow White and Cinderella. | Lesson Delivery Specifics: Timing | Segment 1: | Open by talking about common elements in Fairy tales. Having students recall previous fairytales discussed in class, and use that as a basis for the discussion. Common elements include - Princesses, princes, royalty - Enchanted setting ( forests, castles, kingdoms) - Magic is used - Animals have special abilities - Good characters are subjected to misfortune or evil misdoings - Evil character - Poverty - Lesson is taught - once upon a time - happily ever after | Segment 2: | Have students brainstorm similarities and differences between Snow White and Cinderella. Alex will write them on the white board. Then have the students fill out a Venn diagram.

Similarities include - Both have evil step mothers - Magic - Evil characters are punished in the end - Princes Differences include - Setting - Cinderella has step sisters - Snow white was poisoned - Cinderella is forced to do work - Cinderella has bird friends - Snow Whites step mother tries to kill her three times | Segment 3: | The students will be finishing filling out their Venn diagram and beginning to write their essay. A few students will be working with Kristen to fill out their diagrams, and also come up with a topic sentence. | Homework/Extension/Reminders: Reminder we will be working on the essay this week. We will be sharing them on Friday.
