Keith Coats - Outcome 3 Activity 1 Technological developments within Photography:

There has been much advancement within photography over the past 10 years, especially with the introduction of digital photography from the older medium format film. This development into the digital aged has opened a new era for photography, which has played and continues to play an important role in the developments of social media, which makes sharing photographs considerably easier than ever. The advent of the website flickr has made image and video sharing instant, and fast, and has also allowed other photographers with a digital base to showcase their photographs. There has also been huge leap into Photo editing software such as Photoshop within the last decade, more and more people can now use specialised editing software in their own homes, this is only because the cost of a home computer has dropped massively and the technology within computers has increased.

Activity 2 Legal and statutory controls:

Photography tends to be protected by the law through copyright and moral rights. Photography tends to be restricted by the law through miscellaneous criminal offences. Photographers are protected under the Copyright law which means that they have rights to control the ways in which their material may be used. This makes sure that the creator is credited for their own work, and they themselves may finically benefit from the work. Photographers are also protected under moral rights; this means the right of attribution, the right to have a work published anonymously or pseudonymously, and the right to the integrity of the work. Photographers are also responsible for their own Insurance, meaning they alone are responsible for their own wellbeing; if any accidents do happen then it will be the responsibility of the Photography (this only applies if the photographer is self-employed). Majority of Photographers are self employed which also means they have the responsibility of ensuring they pay the tax and NICs. It is also up to the photographer to make up a binding contract and follow that out, so that both the Photographer and client are secured.

Activity 3 Health and Safety:

With the advancement of technology Photographers now spend the same amount of time editing their photographs on a computer as they do taking the photos. The main health and safety issue surrounding Photographers is computer based which can include eye strain, Back and neck pain and discomfort, Tension stress headaches and related ailments, and pper limb disorders such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) tenosynovitis and carpal, these sort of problems can be caused by maintaining an unnatural or unhealthy posture while using the computer, Inadequate lower back support, Sitting in the same position for an extended period of time and An ergonomically poor workstation set up. It is important that Photographers follow healthy and safety advice, as many of these problems can by preventable by taking regular breaks and positioning your body in the proper way to prevent any muscular problems.
