The Eye Centre Group

WELLINGTON, HAWKES BAy AND MANAWATU. Pioneering Laser Vision Correction in New Zealand.

The MOST ADVANCED LASER VISION CORRECTION with The Eye Centre Group

First, our surgeons are highly skilled corneal and refractive surgeons with a wealth of training and experience.
They and their staff will treat you as individuals, and are close to your home town in Central NZ.

Why CHOOSE The Eye Centre Group for your laser vision correction surgery?

Second, we have the most advanced laser vision correction surgery technology in Australasia and advanced procedures not available at other New Zealand eye centres.
At present, none of our New Zealand competitors can create the precise correction you need by shaping the corrective lens inside your cornea, as we do with the RELEX procedures. We use the state-ofthe-art VisuMax 3D femtosecond laser for this purpose (made by Carl ZEISS Meditec in Germany). This laser can also perform bladeless LASIK and advanced LASEK procedures, plus the new Laser Blended Vision presbyopia correction when used in conjunction with Carl ZEISS MEL80 excimer laser, only available at The Eye Centre Group. You can be sure that the vision correction surgery you will receive at the Eye Centre Group is the most advanced available anywhere in the world.

Third, we have the most advanced diagnostic equipment available to ensure that you are suitable for laser vision correction surgery. Our
diagnostic capabilities for refractive surgery are at present unparalleled in New Zealand. This means that you can be confident that laser vision correction can be safely and effectively performed on your eyes.

Pioneering Surgeons
The founder of the Eye Centre Group, Dr Andrew Logan, was the first New Zealand ophthalmologist to perform LASIK and LASEK in NZ, and believing in the benefits available from LASIK, was the first New Zealand ophthalmologist to have refractive surgery performed on himself. The Eye Centre Group are continually at the forefront of ophthalmic vision restoring surgery.

How Does Laser Vision Correction WORK?

Short and long sight and astigmatism are corrected by reshaping the front of your eye (the cornea). This can be done under the surface of your cornea with LASIK or on the surface with Advanced Surface Ablation LASEK. The reshaping is traditionally done with an excimer laser, like the MEL80. In LASIK surgery, a thin flap of corneal tissue is made using the VisuMax femtosecond laser, and the reshaping is then done under the flap using the MEL80 laser. In ASA LASEK the reshaping is done on the surface of the cornea without forming a corneal flap. RELEX is a completely new type of vision correction surgery, only available in New Zealand from the Eye Centre Group. RELEX uses the VisuMax femtosecond laser to perform the whole surgery it forms a corneal flap and reshapes the cornea at the same time, allowing a quicker procedure with only one laser being used. The femtosecond lasers used at other New Zealand laser clinics are not accurate enough to perform this type of surgery.

Which procedure is best for me LASIK, ASA LASEK OR RELEX?

LASIK and RELEX are the procedures we recommend for most people. Both procedures offer fast visual recovery with little postoperative discomfort. Depending on your individual visual needs, we may recommend LASIK or RELEX. Some other patients, for instance those with thinner corneas, may be advised to have ASA LASEK. When you come in for an assessment we will discuss with you the best procedure for your eyes. Note: all procedures at the Eye Centres are customized to your eyes.

What is LASER BLENDED VISION?

Laser Blended Vision is a sophisticated new procedure for people aged between 40 and 65 years. People over the age of 40 who are not short sighted, will find that they increasingly need reading glasses as they get older. This has meant that older people aged 40+ and undergoing laser vision correction may require reading glasses as soon as they get rid of distance glasses or contacts. Up until now this problem has been helped to some extent by performing a monovision correction leaving one eye deliberately slightly short sighted. Unfortunately, up to half of people may not tolerate the different vision experienced from each eye and many people find that their intermediate vision is a bit blurred known as the intermediate blur zone. The Laser Blended Vision technique subtly alters the corneal shape to stretch out the depth of field of each eye after LASIK. This allows the brain to use the input of both eyes for comfortable vision, in particular in the intermediate distance, resulting in an intermediate blend zone, and much greater tolerance of monovision.

What is RELEX?
RELEX is a completely new procedure for correcting short sight and is only available from eye clinics using the VisuMax laser. The nearest other eye clinic, other than The Eye Centre, offering this advanced Laser Procedure is a 3 hour flight away, with a few more options available within 12 hours flight from NZ. The VisuMax laser is so precise that it can exactly reshape your cornea for vision correction, even for large amounts of focusing error. It offers excellent long-term stability, and a much lower need for re-treatment due to over - or - under correction. In addition, it is a quick and gentle procedure, because it is done with only one laser. (Unlike other New Zealand eye
clinics that use two lasers for blade free LASIK.) 6 7

Is Laser Vision Correction Surgery SAFE?

No surgical procedure is completely safe and laser vision correction is no exception. However with the advanced technology used by the Eye Centre Group, the risk of an adverse outcome is extremely low. Femtosecond LASIK and RELEX are some of the safest surgeries currently performed. Your surgeon will discuss specific risks with you when you have your medical assessment prior to surgery.

How fast will my vision RECOVER AFTER SURGERy?

Visual recovery is fast after LASIK, usually with almost complete recovery one day after surgery. It can be a little slower after RELEX. Recovery after ASA LASEK is relatively slow. Here, vision may be quite blurry in the first week, with full visual recovery taking several weeks to possibly more than a month.

What FOLLOW UP is required after surgery?

Normal postoperative visits are at 1 day, 1 week, and 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery with more visits as necessary. You will be encouraged to have your follow up visits with your regular optometrist who will keep us informed of your progress. All follow up visits for the first 6 months are covered by the cost of your surgery.
