What a fabulous summer of entertainment, starting with the Jubilee and finishing with the Paralympics, made me proud to be British. Hats off to all those brilliant athletes. Well another three events before our next magazine, can't believe how quickly the year has gone. Guy Fawkes Night, Armistice Day and Christmas, I can hear you all thinking, more expense, well shop around as there are some great deals to be had to cut those extra costs, especially offered by our advertisers, please check them out and give them a try. Hope you are enjoying our new Author Jan Ruth, I have read all her books which I downloaded to my Kindle and have really enjoyed each one of them, especially handy for a long car journey as they are also voice enabled, a real good read and only 1.85. How can you go wrong? Have you tried the Tribute Nights at the Quay, they are really entertaining and excellent value for money, the next one is the Bee Gees on the 3rd November, tickets are 35 per person, this includes a 3 course meal, the Bee Gees tribute and then finishes off with a disco, you also get a glass of fizz when you arrive, if you are interested in this then order your ticket quickly as it sells out really fast. I would like to finish off with a recommendation, this company is well worth giving a try, Alwyn Owen Plasterers on page 32, we have just had him plaster our house and I couldn't recommend them more highly, and their charges are very good, they are happy to go the extra mile for you.

Its the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen, said Christopher Columbus as he marvelled at this gem of an island, its lush mountains and virgin beaches lapped by the clear waters of the Caribbean, barely 100 miles from Florida. In this once troubled land, history is always within reach, but the real charm lies in the ever changing scenery and colourful cities. Take Santiago de Cuba, nestling on a vast aquamarine bay meandering, almost deserted, in and out of the mangrove, with its sturdy del Morro fortress and Granma island where rickety houses on stilts jostle along the shore. Beyond the winding lanes, the grand churches and colonial buildings festooned in bougainvillaea, coffee plantations climb up the slopes of the Sierra Maestra, among flame and papaya trees, wild lemon and pines. Up there at nearly 4000 feet, the air is cool and on a clear day, the panorama over Cubas second city dazzles you with colour and light. Its a fair drive across the island but the best way to discover the rural heartlands; here a grove of carob trees, there the feathery blossom of jacarandas, a patch of cassava or the forlorn chimney of an old sugar mill. Pretty towns are sprinkled around - Camaguey, famous for ballet and clay pots, Sancti Spiritus with its shaded arcades, Cienfuegos, the Pearl of the South

Colourful Cuba
- set among flowering trees and elegant Italian style buildings. But framed by mountains clad in jungle and waterfalls, Trinidad is the jewel of them all, the mirror image of a nostalgic island where bicycles and horse-drawn carts outnumber conventional traffic. The heart of the town is a UNESCO site, a maze of colonial buildings, blue, yellow, pink or pistachio green, with beautiful ironwork and red roofs glowing in the sun. In the cobbled alleyways, lace and embroidery flap in the breeze, drums echo in hidden courtyards and on the splendid Plaza Mayor, the old sugar capital enjoys its afternoon siesta. Meanwhile the steam train takes a handful of visitors to Sugar Mill Valley for fabulous views of hills and vales and sleepy villages sheltering under the mango trees. Heading west, luminous rice fields bask in the sunshine, rare birds and sea cows gather on the Zapata peninsula and soon, the capital beckons. Even for seasoned travellers, Havana defies imagination with its swirling kaleidoscope of colours and sounds, stunning palaces and crumbling ruins, wide boulevards and tangled lanes, revamped Cadillacs, side-cars, threewheeler scooter taxis and elegant horse-drawn carriages for tourists. The craft market sells Cuban dolls and hammocks while flower girls in bright costumes pose for pictures on Cathedral Square. Its a wonderful dizzying city where you can eat al fresco, escape to nearby beaches, climb up to the fortress or follow the Hemingway trail to the fishing village of Cojimar. But the must-do excursion is to the hill town of Vinales, shaded by pine and orange trees, where pretty verandas frame every house in pastel colours. You can take a boat trip on an underground river to the Cave of the Indian Chief, partake of a farmers lunch in the forest and enjoy the view at the Jasmine Belvedere, overlooking the limestone hills which rise dragon-like from the valley floor. With its natural beauty and vibrant cities, Cuba is truly enticing.

With Christmas fast approaching, many of us are turning our attention to finding the perfect gift for that special person. The one thing that always seems to spring to mind is perfume.

It may seem that you cant go wrong with perfume, but have you ever stopped to think about what makes it so special? Weve all felt the impact that scent can have in our lives - a momentary waft of a familiar smell can instantly evoke memories of a certain person, time, place or stage of life. Our sense of smell is so compelling that it allows us to unlock forgotten moments stored away deep within our minds in an instant. Indeed fragrance seems to have a magical ability to affect our mood - lifting our spirits, making us feel good about ourselves, as well as happy and contented.It also defines people - we remember their fragrance long after weve forgotten their clothes, or even their looks.This is why its so important to find a fragrance that you love, and to make it your own signature scent. There are thousands of perfumes on the market nowadays - fashion brands, designers and even celebrities have their own fragrances on offer, and many smell very similar to the untrained nose. But, we all seem to instantly know what we like, and what we dont. This is because scents are categorised according to notes - characteristics that define overall similarities. And we all, knowingly or unknowingly, tend to be drawn to a particular fragrance family. Fresh - Scents described as Fresh often contain a blend of green notes that are evocative of things like spring-time, citrus fruits and freshly-cut grass. The overall scent is light,

clean and refreshing. Floral - Encompassing a multitude of aromas taken from flowers, this familys fragrance is totally floral. With inspiration drawn from the scent of a single bloom, or a vast bouquet, Floral fragrances can contain notes of rose, lily of the valley, jasmine, cherry blossom, honey flower, violets and many more. These fragrances can be sweet or powdery. Oriental - Extravagantly exotic, Oriental scents are often formed with notes of amber and vanilla. Known for their sensual fragrance, Orientals tend to be heavier than other groups and are altogether more powerful fragrances. Chypre (or Woods) - Inspired by the woody fragrance of oak, sandlewood, cedarwood and moss, this family is heavily aromatic and masculine - many of these notes are used in mens fragrance. Patchouli, vetiver and pine lift the woody notes, for a crisp scent. Of course, perfumes are incredibly personal and what one person loves, another one loathes. Its a great feeling to find your signature fragrance. And once you discover what elements make it perfect for you, you can buy a range of scents within that family that are different variations on the one you love. This means that your favourite fragrance can be adapted for various occasions, seasons or even for day and night. And remember, if theres a very special event on the horizon for you - like your wedding day - buy a brand new fragrance that you will forever associate with it. Christmas Present
A short story by Jan Ruth

ylvia knew why they were doing it of course. They were concerned about her being alone for Christmas in a huge, falling down farmhouse at the end of a private track, in the midst of a bleak valley. She had no idea why they all worried - her grown up children that is - shed never given them cause to. Since their father had gone, Sylvia had discovered she relished the challenge to just... be herself. It wasnt loneliness, it was the appreciation of solitude, wasnt it? It sounded like her husband had died, to keep saying hed gone. Well Ted had done no such thing, hed had a very late mid life crisis and run off with another woman who lived in a house with better running water and central heating. Thats what it amounted to, it was all about Sylvias refusal to leave the farm and go to live in a flat or a bungalow. Ridiculous! She rubbed half heartedly at the coffee stains on the bedside table and hoped that Helena, her sons other half, wouldnt mind the little boxes of mouse poison in all the corners of the rooms and the dead moths that sometimes fell out of the curtains. If she was honest, Sylvia didnt really get along with Helena. She was terribly fussy about hygiene... and then her daughters husband, well! She didnt know where to start with Will. What was that daft saying he kept coming up with? Where theres a will theres a way. That was it, that was his mantra for everything. He was asthmatic, so shed have to stop all the dogs going in the beds, although it got so cold at night, she couldnt really see anyone objecting. A taxi horn heralded their noisy arrival, spoiling her afternoon nap. They were all far too early, filling the hall with all their bags, parcels and expensive coats and shoes. And it was all a terrible fuss really, trying to keep the dogs from jumping up and the hall table from falling down. Tea, thats what she said, and hurried from them all. She shouldnt have been surprised to find that her eyes were actually filling faster than the kettle; she really would have to get Will to take a look; but when she looked at her reflection in the kitchen window she was astonished to see she was ... well, she was smiling.

or some strange reason, when I think about happiness: August 17th 2007 comes to mind the day when everything around me came crashing down...... I had slipped and landed on the base of my spine, creating a hairline fracture and rupturing 3 discs -- ouch ! The surgeon said severe treatment methods were required. I would require surgery, manipulation, physiotherapy and spine injections for life ...... ... All the works! I felt as if I was standing at the edge of a dark forest, which I had to enter, regardless of what would lay ahead. I was terrified! I decided there and then that I would not allow myself to wallow in self pity. I refused to fall prey to depressing thoughts. I knew it was possible to take control of MY thoughts and simply turn them around and get fit again. I chose to focus my mind on any activity that gave me a happy experience, and I knew that if I could, nothing would give me more pleasure than spending a few hours flying my power kite, playing my keyboards or riding my motor bike.......... All these activities I feared I'd never do again. So I visualised doing these activities and my mind worked it's magic. My body didn't work, but my spirits were simply soaring. Gone were the fears of a few hours ago. I was glowing all over. Once I started to feel in control again, I used my mind to control my pain and then accelerate the process of my physical healing. You may think my story is self indulgent ......... The lesson here for you is that anybody can learn to focus on things that make them happy and well again regardless of their circumstances. After all, we just have the present moment and it's what we think about in the now that creates our next. Today as I look back, I realise that my mind and my positive thinking was my best companion that walked with me through the dark forest and made it all seem like a walk in the park. It's been just over five years since that experience and now I'm walking, working and pain free ! Don't believe me ? See me on the beach regularly ... Flying my 5 Meter Power Kite :)

Seasonal Recipe
These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes.
Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3 - 3 hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.

FOR THE CAKE 250g butter, softened 250g dark muscovado sugar 4 medium eggs, beaten 350g plain flour 2 tsp ground mixed spice tsp ground cinnamon tsp ground cloves Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 800g mixed dried fruit 100g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and chopped 100g chopped mixed nuts FOR THE DECORATION 750g marzipan Icing sugar, for dusting 4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved Mixed coloured glace cherries, walnut halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried apricots

Winter in the Garden

T
here is plenty to do in the garden this time of year when weather permits. Hedges and shrubs can be cut back and tidied up. Herbaceous perennials can be lightly pruned before the winter really sets in. On these plants leave hard pruning until early spring, when the frosts have past. Fallen leaves will be everywhere now so rake them up into the compost bin. Lawns can still be treated with autumn lawn products up until late November. These will kill moss and strengthen the roots for next season. This is the best time of year for planting trees and shrubs. The soil is still relatively warm and the plants should have plenty of rainwater to help them establish themselves throughout the winter months. Mix in some manure and bonemeal when you plant. Dont forget to remove dead and faded flowers from winter planters and hanging baskets to keep them producing a splash of colour all winter long. OK you may not enjoy it at first, but choose something with potential for you. Then be consistent with it. Dont be a yo-yo exerciser starting and stopping 12 days later. Commit to it long term. After 6 8 weeks it will become a habit and you will miss it if you dont do it.

3. Food and Drink for Weight Loss & Health

Replace empty calories with nutritious ones. Reduce alcohol. Reduce high sugar or high fat foods like sweets, chocolate, cakes, pastries, etc with more nutritious lower calorie foods. Fruit and veg daily. Lots of water. Take vegetarian options but watch the cheese. One of the best lunches you can have is Beans on Toast!

4. Flexibility and Injury Prevention 5. Motivation and Energy

No one is free of defects we all get aches and pains. Make sure that your exercise doesnt make your own problems worse. For example, if you have foot pain then swimming, walking or cycling may be a better choice than running! You will get motivated by your results. You will get results once you start exercising and eating healthily. To help you get started get plenty of support from family and friends. If you need help with childcare, work, food choices at home, then ask for it. Tell your Supporters how to help you best. Even tell them to let you know when you are starting to look better and act differently reassure them you wont get offended by this. Your mates will feel honoured that youre asking them! Positive reinforcement works wonders for motivation.

6. Time find your Time Drains

There are only 168 hours in a week. Use yours wisely. Keep a diary for 1 week of everything that you do. Anything that is taking more than 30 minutes of your time is probably a TIME DRAIN and needs attention. I did this exercise myself I now get my shopping delivered, have a Cleaner at home and check my emails only every other day. I have created 7 more free hours per week and can now have Fridays off work!

Im sure most of you know the story of how the Wilkes Brothers (who were Directors of the Rover Company) looked out of their farmhouse window on Anglesey after WW2 had ended, saw their American Jeep standing on the driveway, and decided that they could improve it and sell it commercially as a Rover. They did just that, and it appeared at the 1948 London Motor Show as the new Land Rover.

It is available in both three and five door forms with prices ranging from 29,695 for the 2.2 litre eD4 3-door 150 Pure 2WD version, rising to 40,995 for the 2.0 Si 4 240 Dynamic 4WD. 3-door. I had the SD4 2.2 T/D Dynamic 4WD 3-door coupe on test recently, which had a six speed automatic transmission and permanent 4WD. The 2179 c.c., four cylinder turbodiesel engine developed 190 PS allowing acceleration to 60 m.p.h. in 8 seconds and a top speed of 121 m.p.h. The CO2 emissions were 169g/km and the combined fuel consumption was 43.5 m.p.g. It cost 39,295 and was simply bristling with hi-tech equipment including a large panoramic glass roof, and the optional LUX pack, which cost an additional 4,325 . It had an eight inch touch screen display, analogue or digital T.V., a comprehensive surround camera system, Tow Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Park Assist, advanced Climate Control and Voice Control. The latest Sat. Nav. was amazing, and as you sit on the grained leather, electrically operated and heated driving seat and start the engine, the round transmission selector knob rises, Jaguar-like, out of the centre console, and there is a choice of five suspension settings to cope with the varying terrain. Needless to say, with its permanent 4WD, powerful brakes, adjustable suspension and electronic handling aids, it really IS a superb machine to drive- and be seen in!

The rest is history, as the Land Rover and its cousin, the Range Rover, have become world famous over the years for their versatility and go- anywhere capabilities, and modern technology has seen them evolve into hitech and very sophisticated automobiles. However, the stunning new Range Rover Evoque derivative is surely the most dramatically styled vehicle ever to bear the Rover name. Made at the Halewood plant, it has inherited its big brothers strength and off-road versatility, and has become THE Sports Utility Vehicle (S.U.V.) to own, and is as much at home driving through fashionable Mayfair or towing a boat on the sundrenched Cote dAzure, as it is traversing muddy slopes on
