The health professionals role as a developer and user of online health resources is examined. The Internets future role in health is assessed. Working 2012 description: Explores the evolving roles of the Health Science graduate in the workplace today that blend group skills, new digital technologies, social media and the Internet as both a resource and a tool for health promotion, disease prevention, and health care. The health professionals relationship as part of a team incorporates the contextual understanding and the integration of how technology can act as a partner to improve local community health communication, increase access to programs and improve community health outcomes. Understand the history, use, and potential of technology and new social media in Health Communication. 2. Conduct an Internet search and find relevant information, institutional resources and supporting academic sources on a topic of interest. 3. Assess the scientific merit (evaluate) of information posted on the web/Internet, as well as other uses of non-scientific information for understanding community health and education/communication opportunities. 4. Complete a comprehensive team project that will be used to explore, address and illustrate the way health communication and digital tools can serve are partners in health. 5. Assess and identify appropriate local and national Social Media technology resources 6. Develop and present material in a professional manner, using current technology- based tools. 7. COURSE MATERIALS REQUIRED TEXTS/READINGS/MATERIALS Because of the nature of this course, the ever-changing landscape of technology and the understanding that not every book will fit the needs of each group some resources will need to be purchased. Yet, it is the responsibility of the student and/or group to respond to as needed materials or expenses needed to complete this course. Materials and supplies for this course include printing services with a local vendor of your choice (i.e. Kinkos, Office Depot, etc) that can provide color printing of the 11 x 17 inch posters and mounting of the final versions on foam-core backing, supplemental equipment, resources, transportation to community hosts etc. Since this course re-creates a work environment, and a budget is included as part of the proposal, each group member will be asked to allocate up to $25 for materials. EQUIPMENT / MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS Full participation in HS158 will depend on your ability to adapt and integrate rapidly changing technology as a supplement to the traditional campus-based learning experience. To this end, we have included a number of key elements that are important for you to consider as you enter this exciting time with us here in the Health Science Department. Comment: Each group will be asked to purchase a GROUP memory stick that will be submitted at the end of the semester as the groups digital e-portfolio. Previous semester groups have recommended that a 16GB USB memory stick provided enough space. No hardcopy portfolios will be accepted. It is strongly recommended that each student independently have a personal 8-16GB USB memory stick that serves at the students digital library/archive. Please remember to backup consistently. You are expected to have reliable and consistent computer and Internet access (through an account you check frequently) for background research, homework assignments, and class communications. Class presentations will be a mix of campus-based and online via and may include use of the campus online classrooms Elluminate Live! technology. We will use the University supported LMS D2L - therefore, you will need consistent access to a computer, tablet or other suitable devise either personally owned or from student resources on campus. Some activities will involve having access to the SJSU wireless network during class times. The SJSU Wireless network SJSUOne will require you to sign up and activate an access account to use the campus wireless account. Comment: It is your responsibility to check D2L and/or other digital sources developed for the course on a regular basis for messages from me and your group. Consistent and integrated use of D2L is a requirement of this class; please check it before sending an email with questions about an assignment. It is your responsibility to check the HS158 - D2L News page for announcements that may not go out by email and you are responsible for all material, updates and activities posted in the Contents tab. It is the past experience of previous students that checking D2L once daily, will keep you up-to-date. Important: Do not depend solely on the lectures as your source of coursework documentation and details. Complete worksheets will be posted in the Contents tab and should be referred to for specific expectations and submission requirements. Lectures will include highlights of details that are posted for your further review or based on your having read the material before class. HS158 / Health Communication and Technology, Fall 2012, 2-Section, Lecture/Lab Format Tuesdays 3:00 5:45 p.m. Please note: The timeline listed below is subject to revision, in keeping pace with todays ever changing technology landscape and to reflect the ever-changing, opportunities in public health and health communications. All changes will be announced in classes, posted online via the D2L home course page and/or by email. As a rule; Students are expected to attend both the lecture and the group/lab times. Section 1 will have lecture from 3:00 - 4:30, with group breakout time to follow from 4:35 5:45, location based on group design. Section 2 will meet for group time from 3:00 - 4:30 location based on group design, with lecture to follow in Clark 111 from 4:35 - 5:45 pm.
