From our family to your table
BY LAURA NESS
Visitors are suprised because they discover a wine area that, although the oldest, is not always the one people think about.
GARY GUGLIELMO, PROPRIETOR
GUGLIELMO Open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Experience the time-honored tradition of true family hospitality. 1480 East Main Ave, Morgan Hill, CA 95037 (408) 779-2145 | www.guglielmowinery.com
Just minutes from the Silicon Valley, the Santa Clara wine region still looks and feels much as it did a century ago. Here, the wine tasting experience at the 30-some small wineries is laid back, casual and welcoming: a lot like the weather, which is temperate and Mediterranean, perfect for grapegrowing. Guglielmo Winery, founded in 1925, is the oldest continually operating and family-owned winery in the area. Three brothers oversee the bustling operation, which custom crushes and private labels for many clients, as well as for the winerys own labels. George Guglielmo oversees winemaking operations, while Gene works with the many retail shops and restaurants that have carried the wines for decades, and Gary handles the business operations as General Manager. Tasting here is relaxed, and the friendly staff pours something for everyone, from old world style blends to top of the line Private Reserve wines that continue to garner awards from renowned competitions and publications. With accolades have come increased awareness and foot traffic, and the retail business has doubled over the last year. Autumn is the perfect time to relax in the flower-filled piazza by splashing fountains, enjoying a bottle of award-winning Guglielmo wine as you watch hawks soar over the splendidly colored vineyards that have witnessed countless weddings here.

BUENA VISTA WINERY Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 18000 Old Winery Road Sonoma, CA 95476 1-800-926-1266 | www.buenavistawinery.com Come by and taste their unique Vinicultural Society wines or just to view the remarkable renovations and see why this winery is a favorite in Sonoma.
Sonoma has a rich cultural heritage and is one of the worlds premier wine producing regions. Buena Vista Winery, Californias first premium winery, is just five minutes from the historic Sonoma Plaza and boasts a tranquil setting thats ideal for wine tastings and picnics. This historic winery is undergoing an epic restoration and has just re-opened their Champagne Cellars calling for a celebration! Agoston Haraszthy, self-proclaimed The Count, founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857 and was a pioneer in Californias wine industry. He came to California in 1849 and saw great potential in Sonoma for producing world-class wine. A visionary ahead of his time, he created the first gravity-flow winery, excavated the first wine caves, was the first to experiment with California redwood casks for aging and fermenting and shared premium European viticultural practices. Haraszthy and his son Arpad took a wine expedition to Europe and returned with more than 300 different varietals in his quest to produce the very best wines. The Counts passion for innovation and excellence led to the development of the California wine world as we know it today. In 1863, he created the Buena Vista Vinicultural Society, an association committed to expanding and modernizing the wine industry which was the first of its kind. In 2011, Buena Vista Winery became part of Boisset Family Estates, a renowned and charismatic family with a collection of historic wineries. The family is dedicated to restoring Buena Vista to reflect its past. They are focused on educating and entertaining guests while remaining true to the winerys heritage. Once again, Buena Vista Winery is becoming the embodiment of the California wine world, a vision that Count Agoston Haraszthy predicted 150 years ago. Boisset sensed the power of this place and appreciated the historical

importance of Buena Vista to California and has preserved its integrity at every opportunity. Buena Vista wines are being driven to greater heights under Winemaker Brian Maloney and Winemaking Consultant David Ramey, including the re-introduction of a Sonoma label, in honor of where it all began. These wines include an array of varietals that celebrate the diversity of Sonomas terroir. Their Vinicultural Society wines are exclusive to the winery and to club members. These wines explore clonal selections, varietals, vineyards and the incredible terroir of Sonoma County. Buena Vista has been making wines under the Private Reserve name for decades and these limited production wines are the ultimate within the portfolio. Fruit for their Carneros wines is sourced from the 500-acre Ramal Vineyard that extends along the southern reaches of the appellation. Winemaker Brian Maloney has also extended Buena Vistas reach into other premium vineyards such as Wildcat and Sangiacomo. These wines are perfectly balanced and have intense vivid flavors. Your experience wouldnt be complete without a tasting of The Count, the Founders Red Wine. The deep color leads to rich aromas of black currants and bing cherries. As the historic center of California wine, Buena Vista Winery offers several unique visitor experiences. Wine tastings are held in the stone Press House and gourmet foods can be purchased, if you would like to stay for a picnic or head upstairs to the salon. Experience a Barrel Tour and Tasting in the newly renovated Champagne Cellars. Taste wines from the barrel then enjoy finished wines to witness the evolution from barrel to bottle. If you would like to focus on the grape clones Buena Vista uses for its wine, book a Clonal Tasting. Taste up to three Chardonnay and three Pinot Noir clonal wines side-by-side to learn and savor the differences. Buena Vista also offers a food and wine pairing. Taste five current release wines paired with an assortment of cheeses and accoutrements.

CHATEAU ST. JEAN Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 8555 Sonoma Highway, Kenwood (707) 833-4134 | visit www.chateaustjean.com.
Whats the first clue that something truly special is going on at Chateau St. Jean in Sonoma Valley this holiday season? Its hard to miss the giant inflatable Cinq Cpages wine bottle towering above the winerys parking lot and proclaiming that November and December are all about celebrating the 20th anniversary vintage of this iconic wine. Cinq Cpages (literally, Five Varieties) has been Chateau St. Jeans flagship wine since it was first produced in 1990. Each vintage is a blend of the five Bordeaux varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot in amounts adjusted each vintage to create a unique style that is at once plush, elegant, complex and ageworthy. That doesnt mean you have to sock it away for 15 years to enjoy it, as Cinq Cpages is also approachable and delicious now! The storied history of Cinq Cpages includes the 1996 vintage being named the Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator magazine, which three years later named the 1999 Cinq Cpages #2 Wine of the Year. Thats impressive accolades for veteran winemaker Margo Van Staaveren, who recently completed her 33rd harvest at Chateau St. Jean and has overseen the production of Cinq Cpages since its

inaugural vintage. The current vintage, 2009, was primarily sourced from vineyards in the Alexander, Knights and Sonoma Valleys. Of course, all through the months of November and December visitors will be able to sample the Cinq Cpages in the Chateau, where also on the tasting menu are some of the small-production reserve wines available only at the winery. Perhaps youll find the Reserve Chardonnay from the historic Robert Young Vineyard in Alexander Valley, the Estate Cabernet Franc, the 93-point rated Reserve Sonoma County Merlot, or the Pinot Noir or Syrah from the esteemed Durell Vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Across the way in the Visitor Center, folks gather at the tasting bar for Chateau St. Jeans more well-known favorites. The holiday shopping is pretty extraordinary in the Visitor Center, where visitors can browse a wide selection of housewares, books, wine accessories and food products including the winerys own private label gourmet olive oils and vinegars. And, when hunger strikes, pick up some lunch and a glass of wine at the Charcuterie and enjoy it out on the patio by the winerys famous parterre-style gardens. In December, drop in at Chateau St. Jean for the Joyeux Nol Open House weekends, December 8-9 and 15-16. Guests will experience a taste of Christmas in the French tradition, with special discounts, holiday wine flights of classic French varietals paired with small bites, live caroling, bche de nol, classic holiday movies and much more. The winery will be dressed to the nines in holiday trimmings and the winerys entry to the Sonoma Winery Gingerbread House contest will be on display for guests to cast a vote.

Keeping the Focus on Great Wine in Carneros
BY JOSH STEIN
BOUCHAINE VINEYARDS Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 1075 Buchli Station Road, Napa, CA 94559 (707) 252-9065 | www.bouchaine.com
A visit to Bouchaine Vineyards, the oldest continually operating winery and southernmost vineyards in the Carneros region, brings you full-circle within the valleys winemaking history. First planted by Boon Fly in the mid-nineteenth century, the property, like much of the Carneros District, was forgotten about until the end Prohibition when the property was purchased by Johnny Garetto in 1927. After Repeal, he operated the first winery with a tasting room in the Carneros region. Garetto sold the winery to Beringer Brothers in 1951, who used the winery for thirty harvests. In 1981, Tatiana and Gerret Copeland, a successful business couple from Wilmington, Delaware, fell in love with the property, and thus began the modern-day revitalization which greets visitors today. An almost total renovation took time but was completed in 1995, updating and refurbishing the entire winemaking facility and visitor spaces. Guests are now greeted by the production facilities laid out within the surrounding vineyards such that the rest of the valley is forgotten about. What surrounds you are vineyards, views and breezes and not much else, the way Carneros was at the beginning. You will also see a sign that says that pets are welcome by appointment. Since between two and four winery pups inhabit the spacious property, the Bouchaine folks are sensitive to the fact that not all canines get along with each other. Your own is welcome (on a leash); just call first and they will take care of everything else. Its not just the casual atmosphere and attitude which harken back to Carneros history. The wood that covers the winery buildings comes from old fermentation tanks which were
28
removed and soaked until they could be straightened. Winemaking history is literally in the walls. Inside, the light-filled tasting room gives a cozy embrace, complete with wood-burning fireplace, necessary much of the year because of the direct proximity to San Pablo Bay. Outside, there is a redwood deck and pergola which face gardens, a well-trimmed lawn with a horseshoe pit and olive trees with vineyards just a few yards beyond, stretching away in all directions. What really matters most, of course, is the wine, and visitors can taste a lot of wonderful bottlings, including a number of tasting room-only releases in their Bacchus and Estate Collection Wines. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir star, here, of course, given the locale, but there are also bottlings of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Meunier, an especially rare solo varietal. Equally, dont miss the Ros of Syrah from the Rockin H Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, the Sonoma
Syrah and a delicious dry Riesling. As every staff member will tell you, all are made to show off cool-climate grapes and winemaking, which produces elegant wines made for food. Winemaker Michael Richmond puts it best: We want our wines to show lingering flavors and depth, a smooth texture and just the right level of acidity to pair with many foods, from the simple to the sublime. There are lots of things to enjoy at Bouchaine Vineyards, but several experiences really set them apart. For those seeking food-andwine fun, there is a special basket of wine country treats to pair with the outdoor seating area and vineyard views. Each basket includes lunch alfresco for two served with a bottle of wine, either the Estate Chardonnay or Carneros Pinot Noir. Multiple baskets can even be ordered for larger groups. Its that attention to the little things that will bring you back to Bouchaine Vineyards again and again as it has for visitors for a century and half. Enjoy!

The Hess Collection
BY MIKE HYLAND
THE HESS COLLECTION Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 4411 Redwood Road, Napa CA 94558 (707) 255-1144 | www.hesscollection.com
David Guffy is in the midst of wrapping up his 14th harvest at The Hess Collection winery on Mount Veeder in Napa. It is also his 28th harvest since getting into the wine business back in 1984 in the Santa Cruz area. Guffys job title at Hess is Director of Winemaking, meaning he oversees the vineyards and the winemaking process, which is a pretty big job especially since the company produces so many wines. We are actually still bringing grapes in, says David Guffy when asked about the harvest of 2012. Mount Veeder is cooler and the grapes can stay on the vine a little longer. The hang time on the vine truly pays off when you get it in. During harvest I continually taste the grapes to keep an eye on the maturity of flavors and tannins to insure the best expression of a particular vineyard. While Cabernet Sauvignon is king at The Hess Collection, the top tier division of the company has a well balanced portfolio that features a Mount Veeder Chardonnay, a Napa Valley Chardonnay and two big, bold blends the 19 Block Cuvee composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Merlot and a touch each of Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The Lion, a 2004 vintage, is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petite Verdot. The Hess Napa Collection includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay as well as a Late Harvest Chardonnay. The Hess Small Block Series of wines includes Gewurztraminer, Malbec, Orange Muscat, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Syrah Rose, Viognier and Zinfandel. All of the grapes for the aforementioned wines come from family owned Hess Estate vineyards. Founder Donald Hess purchased his first vineyard on Mount Veeder in 1978, and while the company presently owns more than 900 acres there, only 330 are planted. The forest plays a role in the shading and the ripening of the grapes on Mount Veeder, says David. It is also a pretty wild place with mountain lions, bears, deer, all sorts of wildlife, and it is important for us to share the land with them. We cant plant everywhere. We need to give back to the forest and to the wildlife whose homes that we and other winegrowers have invaded. The fruit we get from Mount Veeder is different from valley floor fruit, and so are the vines. They are structured, complex, rich wines with distinctive tannins, age ability and concentrated fruit. A California native who grew up down the road in San Jose, David spent his summers with his grandparents on a 500 acre farm in Kansas. Thats where he learned the values of farming and taking care of the land so it will continue to give back. While at Hess, David has been in the forefront of sustainable vineyard practices that has always been a big part of The Hess Collection philosophy. The company actively participates in the Wine Institutes Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices and the Napa Valley Vintners Associations Napa Green Winery Program. I enjoy the farming aspect of this job equally as much as the winemaking part, says Guffy. Being environmentally conscious is not only the right thing to do, but in the end, it produces the best tasting wine.

Sutter Home Family Vineyards Launches Two New Products: Pink Pinot Grigio And Red Moscato
Sutter Home Family Vineyards produced the first White Zinfandel, launching an international wine trend that helped shape the way wine is enjoyed and perceived not only in California, but the world over. Committed to preserving Sutter Homes legacy and providing consumers affordable, yet quality wine, the Trinchero family continues to expand the Sutter Home portfolio which today includes 20 varietals such as Chardonnay, Bubbly Pink Moscato, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Chenin Blanc, White Merlot and Gewrztraminer. In an effort to provide consumers with exciting, new wines to enjoy, Sutter Home today announced the launch of Pink Pinot Grigio and Red Moscato. Sutter Homes Senior Director of Marketing, Wendy Nyberg commented Sutter Home has stayed relevant with consumers, by producing the wines they want. Pink Pinot Grigio and Red Moscato will resonate with wine drinkers especially Millennial of legal drinking age as these wines are accessible, in both price and style. Sutter Homes creation of White Zinfandel may have been serendipitous, but the winerys formula for success has always been strategic, with one goal in mind: Create approachable, affordable wine that appeals to todays consumers. The Trinchero family has always believed expansion and leveraging new trends is the best way to keep the Sutter Home brand relevant and remain on top in the industry, according to Trinchero Family Estates President and COO, Bob Torkelson. Our focus is to expand the number of wine drinkers and to help grow the wine industry overall. Sutter Home brought innovation and influence early on: Packaging diversity with the adaption of the groundbreaking 187 ml in PET bottles in 2005 and the production of Moscato over 60 years ago. Today, the Moscato category is indeed growing. Impact Databank estimates that 7.8 million (nine-liter) cases of Moscato were sold in the U.S. last year, surpassing Sauvignon Blanc to become the #3 white varietal with sales up 73%. Sutter Home has continued to be a leader in the category, commanding a 23% share. In the past year alone, Sutter Home launched the following products: Pink Moscato, Bubbly Moscato and Bubbly Pink Moscato; and now Red Moscato. Not only is the Moscato category growing, but so is Pinot Grigio, and at a pace faster than the #1 Chardonnay and #2 Cabernet Sauvignon. Pinot Grigio surpassed Merlot to become the #3 wine varietal and has grown over 10% in sales. Domestic sales of Sutter Home Pinot Grigio increased over 18%, according to Nielsen 26 weeks ending September 15, 2012. The new Sutter Home Pink Pinot Grigio, very similar to an offdry ros, is made from grapes carefully selected from Californias premium Pinot Grigio producing vineyards. On the palate, strawberries and white peach balance well with the Pink Pinot Grigios crisp acidity, creating a refreshing, offdry finish. Sutter Home Red Moscato is the perfect harmony of California Moscato and Merlot. The Red Moscato is rich with strawberry and cherry aromas and lingering sweet berry fruit and rose notes on the palate. Visit www.sutterhome.com to learn more.

Welcome to
CALISTOGA
For all of Napa Valleys world-renown as a wine-tasting destination, did you know that the valley also has one of only three Old Faithful geysers in the world? Located at the north end of the valley in Calistoga, Old Faithful makes for a fun and fascinating afternoon stop between wineries. About every 30 minutes, visitors to the geysers are treated to a firstrate show an eruption of steam and extremely hot water spraying 60 to 100 feet in the air. The term Old Faithful refers to geysers that erupt on regular intervals. Water for the Old Faithful Geyser of California comes from an underground river. When this water flows over the hot molten magma deep in the earth, it boils, expands and then collects in large cavities. Under tremendous pressure from the heat, the superheated water is forced through the fractures and erupts with an outpouring of steam followed by hot spewing water. Old Faithful is surrounded by palm trees and thick bamboo, making for a relaxing and partially shaded setting. There are picnic tables with umbrellas and a covered seating area, all with excellent views of the geyser. The gift shop is stocked with snacks such as ice cream bars, chips and a variety of drinks, or if you want to make it a lunch stop, bring in a picnic lunch from town and a bottle of wine from one of the nearby wineries! Dont miss some of the other interesting features at Old Faithful. Check out the wishing wells that were once used as hot mineral therapy pools. Theres also an informative exhibit area on geyser eruptions and earthquake predictions, as well as a brief history of the town of Calistoga. And best of all, theres a petting zoo with Tennessee Fainting Goats, Jacobs Four Horn Sheep and Guard Llamas.
Old Faithful Geyser of California is located at 1299 Tubbs Lane in Calistoga. The gift shop is a great place to find unique Old Faithful and Napa Valley themed souvenirs, including mugs, shot and wine glasses, postcards, T- shirts and sweatshirts in adult and child sizes, hats and visors, keychains, water bottles, pens and much more. Old Faithful is open daily year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, $3 for kids ages six to 12 and children under age six are free.

Andretti Winery Signs Chef Athena Palombi to LItalia in Vigneto Culinary Program
Andrettis Napa Valley winery showcases the Mediterranean lifestyle
Known for its majestic setting and elegant, Tuscan-inspired estate, Andretti Winery continues its tradition of producing great wine in the Cal-Ital style and creating memorable experiences. With the addition of Chef Athena Palombi, the winery adds an exceptional talent whose culinary expertise will enhance its dining program year-round. Founded by legendary race car driver Mario Andretti, the winery estate is home to a 42-acre vineyard, winery, barrel-aging chai and an Italianate dining room, in which Chef Athena Palombi, will create dinners and lunches all paired with signature Andretti wines. We are thrilled to have Athena Palombi on-board, commented founder Mario Andretti. Her style and approach, and her natural talent in creating wonderful meals to be paired with great wines are exactly what Andretti stands for. This all reminds me of my boyhood home in Italy and what is so wonderfully appealing about the Mediterranean lifestyle which we share with friends and visitors here at Andretti Winery every day. A veteran of local television and Food Networks Chef Wanted as well as the kitchens of several great chefs, Athena Palombi is known for her unpretentious approach to preparing top-flight seasonal cuisine. I call it elegant peasant or rustic Mediterranean, said Palombi. My family roots, both Greek and Italian, have had a strong influence as I channel them through each of my dishes. At Andretti, Chef Palombi will be creating dinners and lunches throughout the year, all paired with Andretti wines. Andretti Winery is renowned for its portfolio of fine wines featuring traditional regional varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as luxury Italian varietals, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio and Dolcetto.
Athenas cuisine is an ideal complement to our portfolio, commented Joe Antonini, Chairman and Cofounder of Andretti. Her appreciation of local ingredients, her passion for quality and her understanding of the pure pleasure of sitting around a table with friends and sharing a great meal is what we are all about. A sample dinner menu might include a first course of Gamberi alla Griglia con Lardo e Insalata di Lenticchie (Lardo wrapped grilled Prawns on top of a warm Lentil Salad), second course of Risotto ai Finferli al Tartuffo Bianco (Chantarelle Risotto with White Truffle), third course of Agnello al Forno e Patate (Roasted Leg of Lamb and with Rosemary and Garlic served with Potatoes) and dessert of Vino Cotto di Fichi con Torta di Formaggio (Wine poached figs served on top of a Ricotta Cheesecake), all paired with Andretti wines. At Andretti, dinner is served at 7 p.m., and lunch at noon. The price for dinner is $125 per person; lunch is $95 per person, both with a maximum of 16 guests. Upcoming dinner dates are Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 15. Check the website for upcoming lunch dates. Events are private and by appointment only. To make reservations, call Tenaya at 1-888-460-8463 Ext. 229. Reservations should be made at least 48 hours prior to requested dates. Judd Finkelstein (white hat) and Heidi Barrett flanked by friends and the Wine Booty launch party
place and Finkelstein was ready to contact fun loving Napa Valley personalities to appear as guests on his new show, Wine Booty! Although focused primarily on wine so far, with the first two episodes featuring winemakers Heidi Barrett of La Sirena and Chris Hall of Long Meadow Ranch, upcoming episodes feature personalities from Napas food world as well as local producers of beer and spirits. Episodes run about 13 minutes long and open with the jaunty Wine Booty sea shanty theme song. Pay close attention to the lyrics that tell the tale of how this show came to be. The first order of business in each show is for the guest of the day to be adamantly directed by the cutlass-wielding captain to crawl through a wine barrel that magically transports them aboard the pirate ship, where Judd awaits to start the interview. Finkelstein is a natural and enthusiastic host; genuinely interested in the projects his guests came to promote. As a lifelong Napa resident and wine country insider, Finkelstein does a first-rate job of asking pithy questions and making insightful observations about the topics discussed. The lively banter is occasionally interrupted by an outburst from Captain Ravens ill-tempered parrot, and other surprises pop up from time to time to keep viewers on their toes. Most episodes end with a trip to the Judds Hill tasting room, where Captain Raven presents samples provided by the days guest for visitors to taste and review on camera. With smiles all around, the fortunate tasting room guests quickly realize that theyve discovered a Napa winery that does things a bit differently. Wine Booty is a breath of fresh air in an industry that can sometimes take itself a bit seriously. Its entertaining, informative and definitely worth a look. You can find episodes by visiting www.juddshill.com or go to iTunes and sign up to receive episodes as podcasts.

DUTCHER CROSSING WINERY Open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 8533 Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg CA (707) 431-2700 | www.dutchercrossingwinery.com
Dutcher Crossing Winery has everything a wine-loving visitor could hope for delicious, reasonably priced wines, a beautiful tasting room staffed with friendly and knowledgeable employees, a gorgeous picnic area with stunning views of Dry Creek Valley and a winery dog to welcome you. Its no surprise that they were ranked #2 of 82 attractions in Healdsburg from www.tripadvisor.com. Lets start outside you pull into the parking lot and notice the beautiful landscaping surrounding the brown, barn-like building that is the winery and tasting room. A flagstone path leads you through a riot of colorful flowers to a breezeway that separates the winery from the tasting room. Glass doors provide a view into the barrel room and winery. Most likely, youll be greeted by Dutchess, a sweet, tail-wagging yellow Labrador Retriever, owned by Dutcher Crossing Winerys Proprietor, Debra Mathey. The picnic area is lovely and its views of the Dry Creek Valley are breathtaking. There are six picnic tables under a wisteria-covered arbor. The colorful, fragrant landscaping and manicured lawns will make you want kick off your shoes and stay a while. The tasting room is large, bright and airy, with high ceilings, glossy wood floors and tasteful dcor. A goodly selection of tasteful non-wine items is artfully displayed around the room. During the week, there is a $5 tasting fee (waived for wine club members) to sample a variety of six wines, and on weekends a $10 reserve tasting is available as well. Winemaker Kerry Damskey does a wonderful job with these wines! I really enjoyed all the wines I tasted, but the following three wines were my favorites: 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, Estate ($23): Oooh! Pretty! Alluring aromas of pink grapefruit, ripe melon and hints of mineral lead into a clean, juicy mouthful of consistent flavors. 2009 Maple Vineyard Zinfandel ($40): Picture a warm blackberry pie, dusted with cinnamon and pepper and youll have this wine in a nutshell, er, wineglass. Aromas and flavors of sweet, ripe blackberry and peppery spice abound, all wrapped up in a luscious, velvety mouthful of Zin goodness. 2009 Proprietors Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon $29: In a word, wow! What a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon! Seductive scents of plum, black cherry, anise and spice leap out of the glass and lure the taster into a voluptuously rich mouthful of ripe dark fruit and spice flavors.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

JAXON KEYS
Visit the Past, Present and Future
Jaxon Keys honors the past as they shape the future. Originally built in 1880, the beautifully restored historic Farmhouse Tasting Room is a visual reminder of Mendocinos rich and storied past. The future lies with their estate-grown and produced wines that garner numerous awards, as well as receive high praise from satisfied customers. Visit the Farmhouse Tasting Room and try gold medal and best of class winning 2010 Maes Block Zinfandel or the double gold Peterson Cabernet Sauvignon among others. At Jaxon Keys, they have wine for everyone Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, white and red blends, Grenache, Zinfandel, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Meritage and more. Visit the historic 1250-acre estate during one of the many events such as the Holiday Open House on December 8. Or, come by any time and enjoy a leisurely wine tasting at the old Farmhouse. Then, feel free to hang out on the wrap-around porch and drink in the views. Come and discover new territory! Plan a stay in the guesthouse and explore the Mendocino Coast or visit the ancient redwoods. Great wine, friendly people, natural beauty all around what are you waiting for? Mendocino is more than a place, its a state of mind. Jaxon Keys is located at 10400 South Hwy. 101 Hopland, CA 95449, 1-877-462-0666, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

With the arrival of November, the pace of life impossibly quickens. How could it get any crazier, we wonder, as the impending holidays drive us inexorably forward as if smacked by an invisible whip. Some vineyards will still be hanging fruit, awaiting the final pick of the season, while others will be thankfully pressing off last fermentations into barrel, ready to put a fork in the 2012 harvest, pop the cork and commence celebrating. Its been quite a season, with great yields, good chemistry and outstanding flavors. We cant wait to begin barrel tasting after the wines get through malolactic. This year brought a particularly bountiful harvest to Loma Prieta, where they picked nearly seven tons of estate Pinot Noir, along with two tons of estate Pinotage. This high elevation site, at 2600 ft, is the only vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains to grow both of these varietals. Loma Prieta also sourced another 23 tons of awesome looking Pinotage from the Amarosa Vineyard in Lodi and the Karma Vineyard in Amador. Stay tuned for the Pinotage Release Party, December 1 and 2. Meanwhile, Burrell School holds its Fall Sippers Club party on November 3rd and 4th, and a Cellar Alumni Sale on November 23rd through 25th, where there are sure to be some fascinating older vintages to revisit.

A cozy place to stay in Monterey is the Lone Oak Lodge, on North Fremont Street, just off Highway 1, past the Monterey Fairgrounds. This is your basic old-fashioned style motel that makes car camping easy. You pull up to your room, unload, boom, youre done. All one-story units, with pleasant bathrooms, clean, comfortable and equipped with wireless everywhere. Fresh flowers in each room are a nice touch, and each unit has a fridge and a coffee maker thank goodness! Creature comforts are important, and this quiet, easy-to-find and easy-to-love, family-friendly lodge has decent towels, great water pressure and plenty of space to stash all your stuff. The fireplaces in
some rooms are quite cozy. Everything is clean and in working order. The best part about Lone Oak is location, location, location: youre only minutes away from all the sights and sounds of nearby Monterey Peninsula and Pebble Beach, but you dont hear any of it from the rooms, thanks to layout and setback off the highway. There are several restaurants in proximity, including a serviceable Chinese for takeout, and drug store, bottle shop and breakfast spot within walking distance if youve had enough time behind the wheel. You seriously cant beat Lone Oak for value, convenience, comfort and quiet. A good nights sleep is what you need most after an exhausting day touring 17 Mile Drive, playing a round on a championship golf course, gazing at the wonders of the deep at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, playing tourist on Cannery Row and Fishermans Wharf and winetasting and people watching on the storied streets of Carmel. Featuring family suites, single rooms and king suites with in-room spas and fireplaces, an on-site indoor Jacuzzi, dry sauna, exercise equipment, Scuba Diver rise area, plus an outdoor barbecue area make the Lone Oak Lodge an ideal home base when youre in the Monterey area.
