Poly(styrenecoacrylonitrile)/organo-modified montmorillonite PSAN/ Org-MMT nanocomposites have been prepared via suspension polymerization. Differential scanning calorimetery (DSC) and falling dart impact test were also used to determine the glass transition temperature (Tg) and impact resistance of the nanocomposites prepared. Transmission electron micrographs (TEM) show an intercalated structure for all the nanocomposite materials. Using a typical surface modifier with a double bond in its chemical structure, i.e. 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl trimethylammonium chloride (MAETC), results in highest impact fracture energy of the prepared nanocomposite. The nanocomposite powder materials were blended with the core-shell latex to improve their impact resistance. Blending the nanocomposites with the core-shell rubber particles enhances significantly the impact resistance of the hybrid nanocomposites prepared. It also increases glass transition temperature of rubber modified samples. TEM micrographs show the dispersion of the rubber particles as well as the organoclay inside the SAN copolymer matrix. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the most substantial mineral constituent of a bone which displays splendid biocompatibility and bioactivity properties. Nevertheless, its mechanical property is not utmost appropriate for a bone substitution. Therefore, a composite consist of HA and a biodegradable polymer is usually prepared to generate an apt bone scaffold. In the present work one kind of these composites is synthesised through a wet chemical method utilizing polycaprolactone (PCL), a newly remarkable biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, as a matrix and hydroxyapatite nano-rods as a reinforcement element. Characteristics of the composite were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. Furthermore, biological properties of nanocomposites were investigated under in vitro condition. For this purpose, HA/PCL scaffolds were prepared through a solvent casting/ particulate leaching process and their biocompatibility characteristics were studied in a saturated Simulated Body Fluid (5SBF) for 3 and 7 days. All the results indicate that these scaffolds meet the requirements of materials for bone tissue engineering and could be used for many clinical applications in orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery. Bioactive ceramics show osteoconduction by formation of biologically active bone-like apatite through chemical reaction of the ceramic surface with surrounding body fluid. The present study deals with a new solgel derived bioglass on biological properties of hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics. Structural properties, physico-chemical and morphological features of the calcium phosphate layer formed on their surfaces during soaking them in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution, and their characteristics were studied using analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Bending strength, microhardness and fracture toughness were improved by adding 5, 10 %wt. Sr-bioglass to HA whereas a decrease in mechanical properties was observed by adding 10 %wt. The best results in terms of mechanical properties were obtained for HA sintered with 5 %wt. bioactive glass which may repair bone defect even better than HA, though more clinical experiments is essential for this suggestion. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules contain a silicon/oxygen nano-sized cage substituted with organic groups. 2-(propylcarbamoyl)terephthalic acid isobutyl POSS (POSS DCA) is a newly developed amphiphilic monotethered compound. This molecule having two carboxylic acid groups can cross-link Eudragit E100 cationic acrylic polymer. However, we observed vesicular morphology for POSS DCA in a relatively polar solvent. Effect of this morphology on complex viscosity of the Eudragit E100 polymer solution was investigated for the first time. A very regular, fine and reversible network structure for Eudragit E100 dried solution initially containing 0.42 %(w/w) of POSS DCA was observed. At higher POSS DCA concentrations of 0.63 and 0.84 % ( w/w), aggregates composed of nano-size lamellar structure were observed. These aggregates were strain sensitive and caused several times increase in complex viscosity after the first run of strain sweep test. Solgel process has been frequently employed for preparation of silica/polyimide composites. In this article, some new silica (SiO2)/ poly amide-imide (PAI) composites are introduced as thermally stable polymers and are prepared via solgel route to enhance the compatibility between the polyimide and silica. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, and morphology of the composites are studied and compared with the related PAIs. The results show that the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composites are significantly improved especially at high silica contents when compared with those of their counterparts prepared by the common method. This is explained in terms of the silica particle size and dispersion in the two composites. In addition, the effect of silica particle size on the thermal expansion of silica/PAI is also examined. itation method. The synthesized NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. A series polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) /CaF2 nanocomposite films with different amount (1%, 2% and 4% wt) of CaF2 NPs have been synthesized and the films were characterized by UV-Vis spectrums. The optical absorption edge of the nanocomposite films are shifted towards the shorter wavelength region with decreases CaF2 NPs. The XRD results indicated the formation of CaF2 NPs with Cubic phase and the crystallite size is estimated using Scherrer equation to be in the range 2027 nm. The PL spectrum shows a series of emission peaks at ~ 394 and 790 nm. Keywords: Nanoparticles; Nanocomposite; Co-precipitation; Photoluminescence SYN 053

Preparation and characterization of Nafion/Fe2TiO5 nanocomposite for polymer electrolyte membranes fuel cells (PEMFC) were investigated. Nafion/ Fe2TiO5 nanocomposite membranes were prepared by dispersion of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles within the commercial Nafion membranes. The composition percentage of the nanocomposite membranes and the solvent used for the dispersion of nanoparticles within the membranes were varied in order to study the effect of these variations on the proton conductivity, water uptake, thermal stability and also the morphology of the membranes. The nanocomposite membranes were characterized using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and AC impedance spectroscopy (IS). The prepared Fe2TiO5 nanocomposite membranes show a higher water uptake, proton conductivity and thermal stability compared with the pure commercial Nafion membranes. Results obtained from SEM studies of the prepared nanocomposite membranes exhibit a homogenous distribution of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles within the Nafion membrane. The highest proton conductivity (22.6 10-2 S/cm) and water uptake (33) was observed for the membranes containing 2 wt. % of Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles and prepared in deionised water (DI) as solvent. In this research, polypyrrole nanocomposites were synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization in the presence of poly-(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as asteric stabilizer. Polypyrrole were prepared in aqueous and aqueous/non- aqueous media using ferric chloride as an oxidant. The products were characterized in terms of morphology with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical structure by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), particle size and yield. The results show that the morphology, particle size and chemical structure are dependent on the type of solution. Keywords: Nanocomposite; Polypyrrole; Morphology; Chemical structure SYN 054
