Chapter 9 School Daze Regina Marie woke up on Monday morning one minute before her alarm went off.

She turned off her alarm and said, Thanks for waking me up, Julianne. She slid out of bed and fell to her knees. She prayed a morning offering that Father Joe suggested. Father, care for me. Jesus, be with me. Holy Spirit, burn in me. Blessed Mother, pray for me. Although Regina did not hear her, she felt Julianne join her in prayer. She finished and stood up when a knock came at her door. G? You awake, kiddo? her fathers voice asked. Yes daddy. Can I come in? Sure. Regina started thinking about what outfit she would wear to school. School! This would be the first time she would go to school after her visions. She would need to interact with someone outside of her family. The thought made her nervous and excited. The torrent of emotion that began to swell was quickly quenched as her father entered her room and broke her chain of thought. Are you excited about school? he asked, reading her mind again. How does he do that? She nodded and admitted, a little scared, too. Well, I found something on my dresser that may help. Its the strangest thing I dont remember where or when I got this. He handed her a prayer card at which point Julianne and Thomas, the guardian angel of Mark Andrews, exchanged a high five. Regina looked at the front of the card which had a beautiful image of an angel talking to a girl. She recognized it as the Annunciation. On the back of the card it had some prayers written.

The Angelus. Its an ancient prayer of the church, her father explained. We used to pray it before Noon Mass when I was in college. Almost a thousand years ago monks would use it as a simple devotional to remember the Resurrection in the morning, the Suffering of Our Lord at noon, and the Incarnation in the evening. The amazing part is that the words of the prayer come from the visions that you just had about the Annunciation. Really? Yes, lets do the morning version. Okay, Regina said with a great deal of curiosity. Now, if more than one person is doing it you have a leader and a response, like we do with other prayers. I will lead, since you are learning. Just read the responses and youll be fine. Oh, and remember to meditate on the Resurrection. Reginas confusion must have shown on her face, because her father said, Oh, sorry G. Um, think about how happy you are on Easter Sunday. That joy comes from the glory of the Resurrection. Regina understood what her father was getting at but felt bad that most her joy came from getting to eat a lot of chocolate and playing with her cousins. Its okay Regina, she felt Julianne say, its all a part of growing up. Just like learning to pray. The angels words comforted her. Mark Andrews began. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. And she conceived by the Holy Spirit, responded Regina. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus, her Father continued. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord, Mark said. Be it done unto me according to thy Word, said Regina. This is so cool. Everything I saw, in a prayer. They both said their parts of the Hail Mary. And the Word was made flesh. And dwelt among us. The said the Hail Mary for the last time. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ, Regina concluded her part. Her father finished, Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech thee O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. All of what she had seen and felt in the last few days seemed to have been encapsulated into this one card. She felt a lot better about going to school. Thanks daddy. Youre welcome, kiddo. Her father left for work and Regina finished getting ready for school. She thought about how she could pray the Angelus at school around noon. She realized that her lunch period would be around that time and she could steal away a few private moments to get it done. This made her happy about facing the day. Regina did not exactly know what had made her dread the thought of school in that moment before her father came into room that morning, but she found out very quickly. Just a few minutes into her first class she started to feel a strange disconnect from what was going on around her. She felt like she didnt fit in. She felt like Gabriel had just revealed the

beauty of the real world to her and this world had become a jail cell holding her hostage. Regina Marie Andrews? Are you with us today? Mrs. OConnor asked. Reginas disturbing feelings had nothing to do with Theresa OConnors class. She usually liked reading class and her teacher, but she felt like a blind person who was granted sight and stuck in a darkroom with no windows. Im sorry, just a little out of it, Regina answered, shaking her head. She tried to return to her work. The facts that her teachers tried to teach her could not compare to the truth of God. How can I keep from singing? She finally understood one of the songs she liked at church. Her soul wanted to burst from her body and dance to heavenly music, but she felt stuck. I have to fight through this. She made it through that class and the rest of the morning by periodically sneaking a glance at her Angelus prayer card. It gave her just enough strength to make it to lunch. Reginas school offered the students the option of a hot lunch, but Regina preferred to eat sandwiches her mom made. Usually, Mary Murphy, the girl she ate with, would get something from the food line, so Regina figured that she would have a little privacy to say her noon prayer. The other girls they sat by kept to themselves which was fine by Regina and Mary. Regina pulled the card out of her pocket and felt peace as she prepared to begin. Whatcha got there? Mary said, as she plopped herself down on the bench next to Regina. Mary Murphy had short auburn hair and piercing green eyes. Regina had played with her since they were babies in the crying room at church. They had been in the same class starting in preschool until the third grade when St. Johns Catholic school had to close due to enrollment issues. They had both moved to the local public school,

Pleasant Hill, starting in fourth grade. The school had two classes for each grade level and luck would have it, they were in different classes both last year and this year. Still, they remained good friends and enjoyed each others company at lunch and recess. Its a prayer card my father gave me, said Regina without hesitation. She thought about how awkward it would feel to tell someone she was going to pray at school, but when the moment came, surprisingly she found herself saying, Do you want to say the prayer with me? Mary shocked her even more with, Id love to. Again, two angels high-fived. Since the girls had transferred to the public school they had to go to Religious Education classes offered at church. They had gone on different days last year, but this year they both went on Sunday mornings. Even though she was there most Sundays Mary would sit quietly through class without answering questions or participating. Her eager acceptance of Reginas offer took her by surprise. Regina explained the prayer just like her father did and then they began. They whispered their lines back and forth not wanting to draw undue attention to themselves when Regina felt the peace she was feeling cut by an icy sword. Something bad was coming, or as she realized, someone. Are you two praying? a mocking voice asked. Regina looked up to see Frank Roland standing across from her. The school had a pretty aggressive anti-bullying campaign in place but it could not curtail the nefarious antagonism that angry little children like Frank could display. Please leave us alone, said Regina. Like Mary, she had known Frank since infancy. He had gone to St. Johns grade school with Regina and Mary until his father had died in a car accident. She remembered Frank was a nice boy who got along with everyone. His family had even

come to their house for dinner when they were in kindergarten together. She remembered her parents conversation the day after the accident. Her mother had just hung up the phone. That was Louise Rolands sister, her mothers voice cracked with grief. Tim was killed by a drunk driver last night. Her father had gotten up and hugged her. We have to do something for Louise and her kids. Poor Frank is so young, her father had answered. Franks older sisters were already in high school at the time, one was a senior. At the time she hadnt realized why her father had said that about Frank. She had come to understand his point only last year. After Regina had transferred to Pleasant Hill, Katherine Andrews had run into Franks mom at the school Halloween party. Reginas parents had discussed the encounter later that night, not realizing that she listened quietly in the next room. I ran into Louise Roland at the party, Katherine Andrews started. Oh, really? I thought they moved. He said that because they had not seen the family at Mass after the funeral and Frank was no longer at St. Johns school. No. She had to take Frank out of St. Johns and Alice had to withdraw from Notre Dame and go to community college, but she was able to keep the house. How is she doing? She tried to keep it together, but broke down in tears. She told me that she stopped going to Mass because Frank refused to go to church because God had taken his father away. She decided to go once and leave him at home with his sister. When she got back he had destroyed half of the living room. He is having a really hard time with all of it. I cant bear to think of not being here for you and the kids. I have heard that missing a father can lead to a lot of problems for children, especially boys, Mark said.

Thats true for Frank. He gets into a lot of trouble in school and has really taken the life out of Louise. She used to be so happy and vibrant. Now, she is clearly depressed and worn out. Regina had been too young to understand the implications of Tim Rolands death, but she cried that night at the thought of losing either of her parents. She had felt so much sympathy for Frank. That was then. Every encounter she had Frank at Pleasant Hill was anything but pleasant. He would sneak in teasing, mocking, and even minor physical abuse to all students that were unfortunate enough to cross his path, but he seemed to save the worst for his old pals Regina and Mary. This day was no different. I asked you if you were praying! Franks voice changed to anger. Whats it to you? Regina said, trying to be brave. She looked to see if the lunchroom supervisors could see them. The two women talked in a corner on the other end of the room. No luck there. Hey everybody look! Sister Regina and Sister Mary are saying their prayers. Isnt that cute? Tell him to shut up. You shut your mouth Frank! Her anger released a little and she felt powerful. No Regina. Stand up and get the adults. She felt confused by the conflict but didnt have a chance to think about what just happened. Oooooh, Churchies getting angry. Maybe you should pray to God to make me, Frank had gotten the attention of the tables in their immediate vicinity and now many students were watching their exchange. Yes Regina, pray. Pray for peace. Another voice tried to cut through Franks jeers, which echoed in her head like a gong. He deserves to be yelled at. Think of all the things hes done to you. Have no mercy. She felt dizzy. No Regina. Fight your temptation. Regina

could not speak, she could not think straight, and her head hurt from the turmoil. His eyes bore into her like drills. He looked like a feral animal as he growled, Dont waste your time! There is no God! Liar! The dam holding back Reginas flood of emotions burst and she screamed at the top of her lungs, I dont care what you think! Just because your dad is dead doesnt mean you can be a big, fat, stupid jerk to everyone! The whole room froze. The only sound Regina heard was the pounding of her heart in her chest. She looked at Franks face to see the piercing arrow she had released finally hit its mark. Regina watched in horror as Franks eyes told her that his father had just died for him all over again. This time she had killed him. Regina, beg for forgiveness. Do it now. She could clearly feel Julianne guiding her now. The other voice was gone. So was her anger, now regret remained. Regina started, Oh, Frank. Im so She didnt get to finish. Frank Roland roared like a lion at Regina. She feared that he would jump over the table and attack her but instead he made a wild swipe and threw all of the trays of food off of the table and into the aisle. Tears ran down his face as he dashed toward the outside door that led into the playground. The adults in the room had not been able to make it to their table because of the crowd of students that had enclosed them as the argument had progressed. They desperately chased Frank out into the lightly falling snow that had developed. Mary saw the devastated look on Reginas face and tried to console her. Regina, its not your fault, but it was too late. Regina Marie had realized the chaos in her mind had been a spiritual battle which Julianne had desperately tried to help her win and had failed. She had only her prayer card with her as she ran from the lunchroom into the school.

Tenebraus danced his way back to Miseros office. He felt invincible. He had triumphed over his human causing her to take part in a verbal assassination. He had quickly planned with the Roland boys tempter to get the two children into an embarrassing verbal altercation that erupted into some delicious sin. He licked his lips as he tasted Reginas wrath. Still enjoying the feast, he entered the disgusting waiting room he despised. Nothing could spoil his mood, nothing. The door slowly open and Tenebraus got ready to gloat before his master who had so rudely dismissed him the last time they met. He never got the chance. Sit down you idiot! The force of Miseros shout threw Tenebraus into a chair. What? Do you not know what I just did? he responded indignantly. Do you? I just defeated that angelic pain, Julianne, and guided my charge to commit one of the Seven Deadly Victories. I would hope you would show me some gratitude! Gratitude? What exactly am I supposed to be grateful for? You got to taste the fruit of your precious victory but we are waiting for a soul to feast on. Exactly. Now shes one step closer to our banquet hall. A big step, I might add, Tenebraus was angry that his conquest was not being appreciated. Have you learned nothing from your training? Miseros had not moved from his chair, but now got up and slid over to a chart on the wall. What are you talking about? asked Tenebraus, feeling nervous. Miseros glanced at Tenebraus with a look of disgust. The humans you brought down to us in the past must have been genetically

predisposed for trouble or surrounded by people with gifted tempters, because I cant see how you could have ever succeeded on your own. The accusation stung Tenebraus who was already wounded by the beginning of their confrontation. How dare you? Tenebraus, save your pathetic pride some other demon. Dont you know that you cant push your patient off the edge of a cliff into the abyss? You are supposed to ease them slowly down the slippery slope. Think about basic training. I know it has been a long time. What does an innocent soul, who is not calloused to sweet sin, do when she jumps headlong into a mortal sin and immediately sees its consequence? Suddenly, Tenebraus began to feel ill. His victory turned quickly to defeat as he realized that he might have made a mistake with Regina. He thought about what would happen to his human next. She had clearly displayed wrath and deliberately broken the will of another person. That could lead her to despair and eventually loss of faith. No, you idiot. She has a loving family who will guide and support her through this. Reluctantly, Tenebraus answered, She might show remorse? Shes already done that, you fool! She may well be on the way to contrition. Miseros stopped examining his chart of elite tempters and turned to stare icily at Tenebraus. You better hope for your sake that this doesnt lead her to Confession. Tenebraus gulped at naming of a sacrament. She wouldnt. Why? Its true that our elite forces have done a tremendous job getting these fools to abandon the abundant graces that come from this vehicle that our Enemy created. We have even coerced the priests to stop preaching about it or offering it regularly in their parishes. Despite this, there are many wretched humans that utilize its power against us, and we rarely can bring them down to the furnace. Her parents dont go regularly, so maybe they wont take her.

Have you conferred with their tempters? They dont go because their tempters skillfully make them too busy at the scheduled hours of confession or forgetful about their intent to go. They still believe in its power. Ill go back and make sure she doesnt go, pleaded Tenebraus. No, Ive already assigned someone else to the case. He felt angry that Miseros had pulled him off of an assignment for the first time ever, but he accepted his decision. Maybe the next one would be easier. So who do I start on now? He hoped for someone with lax parents that didnt discipline. Miseros pressed a button on his desk, opening a door that Tenebraus had never noticed. Two huge, gruesome demons walked in and stood on both sides of him. Miseros said, We are going to wait and see how your debacle turns out. Youll go out on assignment again, but first, you might need to be purified. The two demons grabbed Tenebraus who was shook violently at the mention of purification. No! I can work harder! Please, give me another chance! he screamed as they dragged him through the door. Miseros shook his head and said, At least we will be satisfied with someones suffering. Regina Marie raced from the lunchroom intending to go to a bathroom where she could let out the sorrowful tears building inside of her. The right thing would be to tell the principal the truth. She felt the voice in her mind was giving her good advice, but it didnt feel like it was Julianne. Tell the truth and maybe it wont be a big deal. Her sadness diminished and she found herself moving herself to the office. For a moment she vaguely remembered the look on Franks face, but the image vanished before she could dwell on it.

Regina explained the whole story to the Mrs. Winters, the principal. You did the right thing, coming to tell me what happened. Regina felt proud and vindicated. I am going to let you off with a warning. I dont want any more shouting matches in my school, young lady. Thank you maam, you can count on me, Regina replied and walked to her next class. The rest of the day passed without incident. For some reason, Regina felt emotionally numb all afternoon. Whenever her mind moved back to the lunchroom incident, a guiding voice would say focus on school work, the past is the past. The evening seemed to fly by. Her father worked frantically grading tests that he wanted to hand back the next day. Her mother was catching up on housework and making dinner, and Regina helped Emmanuel with his homework while working on her own. The memory of the lunchtime confrontation faded as the quiet voice in her mind kept repeating her principals words, you did the right thing, you did the right thing. Regina did not recognize the subtle numbness that had come over her. It was a false peace because her altercation with Frank Roland had damaged her relationship with God, which deprived her of true peace. This kept her from seeing her new tempters manipulation. Reginas family ate dinner without incident and then decided to play a board game. A little past seven oclock the phone rang and Katherine Andrews got up to answer it. Hello? Regina watched her mother smile in her usual way. Oh, hi, Father Joe, her mother said, smiling even wider. She continued listening to the priest and her face fell into a very serious, concerned look. The call lasted several minutes, at which point Katherine Andrews said, They will be in our prayers, Father. What was that about? Mark Andrews said.

Father Joe asked us to pray for the Roland family. It seems that Frank stole a car and crashed it earlier today. Reginas heart started to race. He is in critical condition at St. Marys with several broken bones and internal injuries. Louise asked Father Joe to anoint him in case Her mother looked up at Regina and Emmanuel and did not complete the sentence, but Regina knew how she meant to end it. Before she could stop herself, Regina said, He dies, and her fog was lifted.

Chapter 10 The Prodigal Daughter What Regina didnt know was that Julianne had tried all afternoon and evening to get through to her. Her new, more powerful tempter had blocked Juliannes efforts to help Regina get free from the sin she had fallen into. When Frank Roland had run from school in a crazed state, he fumed from his fight with Regina. The pain of the loss of his father exploded inside of him. As he ran away from school, back to his house, he spotted an unmanned vehicle that was idling. The owner had started it in order to warm it up. Frank was large for his age, but completely unskilled behind the wheel. His quest to outrun his anguish only lasted a few blocks before he lost control and smashed into a telephone pole. Franks guardian angel had sent out a general alert for assistance. After the new tempter thwarted her every attempt to break through to Regina, Julianne had gone to Louise Rolands guardian with a plan. Mrs. Roland had never named her guardian so the angel went by his last given name, Ricardo. Ricardo was heroically trying to guide Mrs. Roland to pray for strength and not despair in this difficult time. Julianne, its been a long time, thanks for helping, Ricardo said. I have an idea that will help both of us and your humans son as well. What do you have in mind? First, get her to turn to Father Joe for guidance, Julianne suggested. That might be tough. Louise has not gone to church for several years and her heart has hardened to my touch and Gods love, Ricardo lamented. Lets petition Our Lady for help with a subtle maneuver, Julianne suggested. Ricardo agreed, and with some grace from God

obtained by the Blessed Mother, they placed into Louise Rolands agonized mind an image of significance. At the time, her anguished thoughts were scattered in every direction. All of the horrible emotions she felt when her husband lied dying from his crash had rumbled back. In the midst of this chaos, the angels managed to remind her of the time she had spent in the hospital chapel praying for strength. She had spent much of that time before a replica of Michelangelos Pieta, the masterpiece which depicted Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus after the Crucifixion. When Louise Roland saw the image, her memories reinvigorated her faith which had lied dormant in sadness. Graces started flowing and she remembered the many messages Father Joe had left on her answering machine saying he would always be available if she needed him. Now, she needed him. Ricardo thanked Julianne, who then left to work with Father Joes guardian angel, James. James, I need your help. Julianne had known James closely since Reginas baptism ten years prior. What do you need Julianne? The guardian angel of a priest is always called upon in a special way to defend his human against intense spiritual attack, but in preparation for Juliannes mission, James had recently been called to extraordinary duty. I would like you to guide Father Joe to call the Andrews for extra prayers in this Roland case. You think this will play a special role in your girls progress? Yes, I think this might be just the thing to get her learn an important lesson, Julianne said. Easy enough. Ill work on it right away. Julianne thanked James and returned to Reginas side. She waited, praying for the Lords assistance, for the right time to break into Reginas mind. That time was now.

Oh, Regina, dont think the worst. Im sure he will be fine, Katherine Andrews lied. She knew she couldnt be sure, but she didnt want to distress her two young children. You did the right thing Regina. You told your principal and the issue was resolved. She said you did the right thing. The voice in her mind consoled Regina in the face of the terrible news about Frank. She heard the words, but they felt so empty. The myriad of emotions battling in Reginas mind left her confused and full of questions. Should I tell the truth? Will I get in trouble? Will Frank die? Will my parents still love me? Her tempters lies continued you dont need to say anything, you already did the right thing. It didnt help. Pray Regina! In her heart a familiar voice returned. You must battle! Regina suddenly remembered the training that Julianne had given her two nights before. She began to pray. The effect of this first step back to God could not be overstated. The power of its intent stunned her tempter and released her from his grip long enough for her to feel an emotion that she had been denied. Im sorry, was all Regina Marie could say as she got up from the table and ran for her room. Her family could hear her sobs as she raced up her stairs. Ill handle this one, said her confused mother, who got no argument from her husband. Emmanuel didnt seem to be phased. Katherine Andrews did not expect the devastated state she found her daughter in. Regina had curled herself up in a ball on her bed. Her tears were soaking her pillow and she couldnt control her wailing. Regina? Whats wrong? Through her tears, Regina was able to stay in a prayerful state. She was not saying any specific prayers but her soul cried out to God in supplication and she envisioned battling her tempter.

You got me to ignore God at lunch didnt you? Regina remained in prayer to lift her sword at the demon in front of her. Despite her desire for him to appear in a menacing form she could fight, he looked like a movie star wearing a stylish suit. It wasnt me, Im just trying to help, her tempter replied. He held his hands up as a gesture of innocence. You made me think I could stay quiet and everything would be okay. Telling your mother is not going to make Frank better. You will get into trouble and that will just make it worse for you, the demons voice was soothing. Regina was confused. She had her sword ready to attack but the demon did not come at her. Instead he was not looking to fight at al. Regina, that is his attack. Julianne came into her meditation just as she had seen her before. Picture his deception as an attack. It is the most vile kind. This is not your original tempter. Something has changed, warned Julianne. Regina understood Juliannes words and she incorporated that knowledge into her prayer. The tempter now had his own sword. He looked at the weapon and realized that his deception was not taking hold. His eyes flashed red with fury and he came at Regina. Her heart spoke out in sorrow, have mercy on me Lord Jesus, I have sinned against you. The simple act of love and sorrow allowed her and Julianne quickly to force her enemy into a hasty retreat. She was free of his lies. Its my fault! Franks dying, and its my fault! No its not dear. It was an accident. You had nothing to do with it, Reginas mother consoled. No, it really is. Regina painstakingly explained the whole scene at school. It took a long time because she had to stop frequently to let

out several good cries. She explained the battle she had in her conscience to keep her culpability to herself and her final ability to come clean with the whole story. Her mother listened in astonishment. Im sorry I yelled at Frank, especially now that he is so badly hurt, but the strange thing is I am mostly sorry because I feel that after seeing such wonderful visions, I have let God down. I am most sorry for that. Katherine Andrews looked at Regina, clearly impressed, and said, Perfect contrition? She wasnt talking to Regina, she seemed to be asking herself the question. What mommy? Huh? Katherines mind had gone somewhere distant. Oh. Let me tell you a story I think you have heard before. Which one? The Parable of Prodigal Son. I think I remember it. Good. I think it will help you right now. It starts with two brothers, right? Yes, a loving father has two sons. The younger son asks for his inheritance up front and his father grants it to him. He then proceeds to move to a town far away and spends up all of his money in sinful and wasteful ways. After he uses up his fathers money he has to work like a slave and eat scraps not fit for pigs. Does that ring a bell? Yes, I remember that. You are very much like that son, Regina. What? Yes. Think of it this way; God gave you a special gift, in your visions. You kept those gifts at home for a whole day, but then what did you need to do? I had to go to school.

Right. Away from home, the prodigal son had a chance to choose to spend his money for good or evil purposes. After God granted you the gifts of your visions you also had a chance to make the same choice. Regina understood that she had been given a chance to witness to Gods glory and had instead turned to walk in the opposite way. I wasted my gifts like the son, she said sadly. Sweetheart, dont feel so bad. There is more to the story. So, after the son spends all of his money, he has to work for practically nothing and almost starve. He suffers like you are suffering now. Some people who sin feel its effects for a long time without ever addressing the problem. You have at least confronted the problem right away. Regina thought about how her tempter wanted her to ignore the issue. She would have too, if Julianne hadnt helped her fight her way out of his grasp. She could have suffered from the guilt and the numbing loss of Gods friendship for a long time. Her mother continued, When the son was in the midst of his suffering he came to his senses. He felt tremendous sorrow. He planned on returning to his father to say Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you. I am not worthy to be called your son. Treat me as you would treat one of your servants. He was contrite, Regina. He knew he had offended his father, he hated the deeds he had committed, and was willing to work as a servant to make amends. Mommy, you said perfect contrition a while ago. What did you mean by that? Perfect contrition is when you are sorry for your sins because you have offended your Father in Heaven, whom you should love above all things. Imperfect contrition is when you are sorry because you are afraid of going to hell or just because the thing you did was wrong. When you

said you felt bad because you had let God down, I sensed it could be perfect contrition. Is that good? Yes. Actually its beautiful. What happens now? Regina wanted to do the right thing. Do you remember when you first heard that parable? In Religious Education class. More specifically, her mother probed. Regina thought hard about when she had learned that lesson. It came to her with an unpleasant thought. When we were preparing for first Reconciliation. Thats right. I think it may be time for all of us to go Reconciliation together. We have not come close to our desire of going once a month. I think you could really use the grace to heal from your wounds kiddo. This idea did not bring comfort to Regina. Mommy? Yes dear? I still dont like it. What do you mean? You said when I got older I would like going to Confession, and I still dont like it. Regina felt awkward at this simple confession. She didnt like admitting that she did something wrong as much as she hated making mistakes in the first place. She liked to get things right the first time. It didnt matter if it had to do with school, sports, or music. Most of all, she didnt like being uncomfortable with one of the seven Sacraments of the Church. Her mother diagnosed her problem immediately. Regina, I know you are a perfectionist, but everyone makes mistakes.

I also dont see why I have to go to a priest. I remember someone said that sin hurts your friendship with God. Why cant I just tell Him that Im sorry? You can Regina, and you should, but in Jesus, God became a human being. He lived as one of us and knew our likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Jesus knew people are creatures of body, mind, and spirit. So when He gave the power of forgiving sins to His apostles, He trusted that they and their successors would establish a way for people to receive the grace of forgiveness that cared for them completely. I dont understand. Hmmmm. I have an analogy that may help. I have told you not to play ball in the house, right? Yes. Lets say you did anyway, even though you know its wrong, and you break my favorite vase. Would it be fair for me to be upset? I would be. Exactly, that is what happens when we break one of Gods commandments. I tell you not to play ball in the house because you can break things. The Ten Commandments are there to help us from breaking our souls. When you sin, God is upset, but He still loves you like I would love you. Okay, that makes sense. Wait, theres more. Now youve broken the vase, and I assume you are sorry. Would it be right for you to leave a note for me to find or send me a text message? Regina thought about this for a second. Neither of those options sounded right. She figured the right answer and said reluctantly, I would find you and tell you in person.

Why? Wouldnt I know about your disobedience either way? What difference does it make? A thought fought to form in Reginas mind but it couldnt quite come to completion. It means more if I come to you. Yes Regina. It means more to both of us. To me, you show your love and respect for my authority by taking your time and energy to come and see me and ask for forgiveness. For you, you must put aside your fear and trust in my love and acceptance. Being together physically allows you to express your sorrow with your voice and hear my words of forgiveness with your own ears. I could even give you a hug to physically show that I take you back. Do you see? The concept started to click. So Reconciliation at church gives me a chance to physically go to God to say sorry for breaking His vase? Katherine Andrews laughed. Kind of, but theres still more. Really? Yes. Why would you feel bad in the vase situation? Because I broke your favorite vase and I would be in trouble? Thats true, and not bad, but that isnt true contrition. You said you would be sorry because you would get punished, but I would like you to be sorry for something more important, Katherine said, wanting Regina to figure it out for herself. What else was there? She played ball in the house, the vase broke, and she was in trouble. Playing ball in the house! I should be sorry for disobeying your rules. Yes, and now the big question. Why? Because I love you and I should do what makes you happy. Very good, Regina. Perfect contrition is when you repent of your sins because of your love of God. You impressed me when you said you felt so bad about your fight with Frank because you had let God down

after He had entrusted you with your visions. Many people spend their entire lives never having that feeling. Really? Regina felt a lot better. Her heart still ached for Frank but she had hope for healing. Oh yes, and there still is more to Reconciliation. Katherine had gotten on a roll and could not be stopped. Do you know how your basketball coach asked you to shoot twenty free throws every day in the offseason and write down the results in your journal? Yes, he said we should be getting at least 10 out of 20. Right. Exactly how do you feel when you dont get at least ten? I feel bad. I feel like I let myself and coach down. I know. Youve told me that. You also told me that you wish that, what? Regina had to think about what her mother was getting at. It took her a moment but she figured it out. Oh yeah, I wish that I could see coach so he could give me pointers when I dont make the ten free throws. That way I could get better. Katherine smiled at her daughter. She raised her eyebrows at Regina as if to say, So make the connection yourself Regina. Regina didnt answer as much as she asked, Confession is like coaching? Sin is like not making my goal? Thats right. You can feel sorry to God for your sins, but how much better is it that you can have His representative coach you on how to avoid the sin in the future? Thats cool! Regina saw the beauty in the Sacrament of Reconciliation where she had once seen a chore. I want to go to Confession, she declared. Great. Lets see if Father Joe is free right now. Her mother got up and went downstairs to inform the family that they were going to

Confession if Father Joe could fit them in. She called him and he agreed to see them right away. Everyone got ready and went over to the church where Father Joe had already set up in the Confessional. Her parents went first. Regina had gone to Reconciliation with them before and usually they were in the booth for only a few minutes. It took her by surprise when they both took about ten minutes to come out. They both smiled when they came out and knelt in pews apart from each other to work on their penance, Regina supposed. It came time for her to go in. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Father Joe said as she entered her booth. Bless me Father, for I have sinned, it has been She thought about it. She went at the beginning of the school year with her Religious Ed class. Three months since my last Confession. Regina proceeded to explain to Father Joe the Frank Roland situation. She felt the weight fall off of her shoulders as she spoke. She also mentioned some other sins that she had occurred to her doing the Examination of Conscience while she waited for her parents to finish. She felt like she had talked forever when she ended. Regina, Jesus told us to love our enemies and to pray for them. He knew this wouldnt be easy, as youve found out. In the past, I have given you a basic penance of an Our Father and a Hail Mary. We can never earn Gods forgiveness. He offers it freely, so any penance is just a token of our love and turning our hearts to His Will. This said, I feel called to give you a special penance which will help you heal and grow in your mission. Regina felt excited and scared at the same time. Father Joe continued, I want you to visit Frank Roland in the hospital. Tell him you are sorry in person, and regardless of what he says, tell him that you

are praying for him. Regina had a feeling that Father Joe had something like this in store for her. Yes Father, she said. She resolved to follow through soon. Now, say the Act of Contrition. Regina panicked a little, but found relieve when she spotted the prayer card sitting to her left. She prayed the words as she read. My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intended, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His Name, My God have mercy. Father Joe responded with, God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of your son, you have reconciled the world to yourself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the church, may God grant you pardon and peace. And I absolve you of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Regina made the Sign of the Cross and said, Thanks be to God. She felt a happy lightness as she left the Confessional and went to pray in thanksgiving. This allowed Emmanuel to take her place. He had received his first Reconciliation only a few weeks prior during a Religious Education retreat. He came out a few minutes later. Father Joe came out of his room and motioned for Reginas parents to come see him. She thought he looked giddy like a child. Its getting late, but I need to see you all tomorrow again, if possible, Father Joe said.

Her father looked as confused as the rest of the Andrews but he spoke first. Why dont you join us for dinner? He looked at his wife, who nodded in agreement. Fabulous. Im sorry I cant be less mysterious, but I need to pray about something first. I assure you, I will explain. Of course, Father. We understand, Mark Andrews said. Regina assumed he was being polite because her father looked completely perplexed. Thank you so much for seeing us tonight on such short notice. Youre welcome, and thank you for having me over tomorrow. Father Joe led them to the door and bid them good night. No one talked on the ride home. Regina noticed that everyone had a smile on their face, even Emmanuel. She knew her repentance wasnt complete so she broke the silence. I need to go see Frank in the hospital for my penance. Her mother gave an interesting look at her father, who returned it. She said, Thats an interesting penance. Yes, interesting, said her father, strangely. Her mother said, Of course Regina. Well take you soon. Nothing else was said until her mom came to tuck her in. This proceeded in the usual way and Regina prayed as she fell asleep, God, help me to understand adults. They are so weird.

Chapter 11 Vocatio et Missio After Father Logan escorted the Andrews out of the church and said his goodbyes, he called the pastor at the other Catholic Church in town. Father Richard Baker had been at Holy Family longer than Father Joe had been at St. Johns. They had become resources for each other over the years even though they werent particularly close friends. Father Rick? I am sorry to bother you so late, said Fr. Joe when the familiar voice came on. Joe? Its nearly ten oclock. Is everything all right? Fr. Joe winced as Fr. Rick innocently dropped the title of Father in their conversation. Fr. Baker did not mean any disrespect, but Fr. Logan often thought about how different the seminary was in the confusing 1970s than what he experienced during the revitalization of formation during the pontificate of John Paul II. The title of Father was exactly what he wanted to talk about. Please, Father, he emphasized, Could you hear my confession tonight? Cant it wait? I have the early Mass tomorrow morning? Thinking quickly, Fr. Joe compromised, If you can do this for me, I will say Mass for you in the morning. You know how much of a sacrifice that is for me. He hoped that the common knowledge of his dislike of early rising would soften the older priests resolve. St. Johns had its first Mass at 8:30 a.m. and Holy Family at 7:00 a.m. He was sure he could make it to both. This must be serious. I will be ready for you when you get here. Father Baker would not be called orthodox by many people but he had a good heart and found it difficult to let someone in need down.

Father Joe did an Examination of Conscience on the way to Holy Family. Nine minutes later he pulled up and headed into the church. The Priest light for the confessional was on indicating that Father Baker was waiting. When Father Joe went in the Penitent light would go on, but no one would be around the church at this time to notice. He had not confessed to anyone but his spiritual director for years, but the hour drive would have made it much too late if he was even available at all. This will be interesting. Bless me Father, for I have sinned. Its been one month since my last confession. Fr. Joe paused for a moment to collect his thoughts. I am sorry for not living my vocation. During formation in seminary and my early years as chaplain at the high school I felt the call to be as Christ, ministering to the people who came to me in need. I responded with constant prayer and fasting. I saw each day as an opportunity to die to myself like Our Lord and to offer those graces to others. Now, I perform my duties like I am working a job. I perform tasks on time and efficiently, and I feel prideful about that. I dont let God work through me as His instrument, but now He has called me out of my darkness. His voice is ringing in my heart and I pray for forgiveness for my past weakness and strength to live and serve as He wants. The confessor marveled at the words of his peer. He didnt hear many confessions in general, as parishioners at his church utilized Reconciliation less than the average Catholic. He also tended to try to soften the guilt of the penitent and he couldnt stray from his normal practice. You are too hard on yourself Joe. You are a great priest. I have heard it from my parishioners, your parishioners, other priests, even Bishop Roberts. You serve God and His people well. Dont beat yourself up so much.

See, youre a great priest. You dont need to change. You are doing everything you need to do. Fr. Joe heard the older priests words mimicked by something in his conscience. The graces he received from the Sacrament allowed him to see they came from a voice of darkness. He fought through the spiritual attack. He didnt think talking about Regina and her visions would provide any benefit or insight to the situation, but he knew he had to clear his conscience about his past laxity if he was going to join Regina in her mission. Our Lord is calling me to be Reginas guide. If I am not hard on myself, how can I call on others to live out Gods will, no matter how extreme. He responded, Thank you for being here for me. They concluded the sacrament and coordinated the passing of keys for Mass in the morning. Father Joe prayed his penance and was home shortly. Although he was extremely tired he forced himself to pray his required nightly prayers. He hopped eagerly into bed knowing he needed to get to sleep since he had to wake up early. He prayed for strength to answer Gods call to exceptional priesthood, but his spirit became restless. A battle began in his soul that extended to his body and mind. Dont be too hard on yourself. Again, his tempter played Father Ricks words back in his mind repeatedly. I will only be as demanding as Jesus was on himself! He knew a demon desperately wanted him to quit his mission. You are a good priest. Your people like you for who you are. If you change they wont appreciate your efforts. I will call them to awaken from their slumber. I will be a voice in the wilderness. I will speak Gods word. His voice rose as he fought the temptation. His body strained in unison with his spirit to battle the evil spirit.

Many will leave the church. Your words will be too harsh. Lord, to whom shall I go? You have the words of everlasting life! He submitted himself purely to Gods will and the grace from his submission expelled his tempter and left him in peace, exhausted and ready for sleep. For the second day in a row, Mark Andrews found that he couldnt focus at work. While not the most meticulous nor detailed teacher, he brought a passion to the classroom his students responded to, but the last two days he knew he had fallen short. His mind kept going back to what Regina had told him on Sunday morning. Our Lady wants her knight back. The wonderful memories of his faith life in college persistently haunted him. While his recollections were positive, the regret he felt for not living out his consecration more faithfully ate at his soul. At the noon hour he prayed The Angelus quietly to himself. The thought that his daughter would be praying at the same time brought him some joy while his spirit struggled. He didnt know what Reginas visions would mean for him or his family but he felt something big coming. Something had awoken in his spiritual life and his mundane work experience was crushing him. Thomas, pray for me. I owe these kids my best, he asked his guardian angel. He had whimsically named his angel Thomas, because like the apostle, Mark had asked that Jesus to prove himself to him before his conversion. He knew that while he never had the opportunity to put his fingers in nail holes or his hand in Jesus side, the gift of faith was bestowed upon him in an unforgettable way. While the numerous devotions he performed in college had greatly diminished, he always found support from his guardian angel in his heart. Open your drawer. Inaudible, but clear, Mark felt the call in his heart. He opened his top left desk drawer and rummaged around through

some of the junk he had accumulated throughout his fifteen years of teaching. A bag of coins, some dice, some calculator cords and manuals, and service awards were only some of the things he moved around. He wondered if he had misinterpreted his intuition until he found a copy of The Way, The Furrow, and The Forge by Saint Josemaria Escriva. He had purchased the book while on a retreat many years before. He had the read it cover to cover that weekend and had looked at it several times since, but he had forgotten that it had made its way into that drawer. He opened it to the index to find some words of wisdom about work. He found a reference and went to the correct page. He read: That supernatural mode of conduct is a truly military tactic. You carry on the war the daily struggles of your interior far from the main walls of your fortress. And the enemy meets you there: in your small mortifications, your customary prayer, your methodical work, your plan of life: and with difficulty will he come close to the easily-scaled battlements of your castle. And if he does come, he comes exhausted. Perfect! Mark said out loud. What? asked a co-worker. Mark realized he was thinking out loud. Oh, sorry. Never mind. He looked at the quote again. He remembered that his work should be done as a prayer and was already a significant part of his mission. The Lord had more in mind for him, but whatever it was, it would be built upon the bedrock of his ordinary life. He resolved to offer up the rest of his day to God and got back to work. Reginas second day at school after her visions was uneventful. She focused on her studies to get through the day and enjoyed visiting with her friends at appropriate times. Despite the ugly incident at lunch the day before, Mary Murphy joined Regina again for the Angelus at

lunch. She actually talked Regina into saying the prayer because Regina feared trouble from the lunch ladies. I told my mom what happened yesterday and she said that it was a sign that we had done the right thing. She said the devil worked through Frank to try to stop our devotion, and she said we should definitely keep doing it, said Mary. Wow, your mom is serious about this stuff too, Regina commented. Regina found it difficult not to share her visions with Mary, but she felt good that she knew someone she shared a background with. For some reason it was at this moment when Regina finally realized that she had never told Emmanuel about her visions. She had talked to both of her parents already several times, but she felt badly that her primary companion had been kept in the dark on the subject. Her parents hadnt mentioned the issue. Maybe they all assumed that he was too young and would not be interested. It doesnt matter, he should know. She came back to this thought for the rest of the school day when she had a chance When Regina got home, she found that Emmanuel was in the basement playing and her mother was reading a book on the couch. How was school today, Regina? Katherine emphasized the word today. Everything was fine, she answered. Then she continued, Something did bother me though. Oh, whats that? Should I tell Emmanuel? You know about the visions, Regina asked her mother. What would you tell him? I dont know. Regina had grown accustomed to her mothers non direct approach to helping her with her problems. Her father would

actively solve her problems and teach her very directly, but her moms subtlety created a nice balance. Do you think he would understand? This kind of question would frustrate Regina at times, but now it made her think of the strangeness of the situation. It took her such a long time to explain the vision to her father. There was no chance that her brother would be able to sit still for that long let alone be quiet. What if I just tell him that I saw an angel? He probably already can tell something special is happening. I dont want him to feel left out, in case he hears us talking about it, you know? Like any other older sister there were plenty of times when she would quarrel with her little brother. She even hit Emmanuel when she was angry. In fact, this was the one thing she usually could count on mentioning when she went to Confession. She always felt bad afterwards and he was ever forgiving. She knew if he didnt deliberately annoy her he was the sweetest kid in her life. When Regina thought about it carefully, she could see that Emmanuel was her closest companion and the one person that she could always be herself around. She felt that he had to at least know something about what had happened to her. I dont see why not, but youll have to come up with your own words for this one, her mother replied. Regina decided to tell him right away. Regina found Emmanuel playing in the living room with his cars. He raced them around and smashed them together one after the other. He made them scream as well as make typical car sounds. Regina watched him for a bit and couldnt figure out exactly what he was doing, but she bet that he had some story for this scenario in his mind. Hi, Manny.

Hi, he barked without looking up. His imaginary car war didnt skip a beat. I need to tell you about something that happened to me. Its kind of important She didnt really know what to say after that but she hoped she would think of something quickly. You talked to an angel and he showed you stuff, Emmanuel replied matter-of-factly, still without looking up from his cars. This stunned Regina and she stared at her little brother in silence. He continued his game. Finally, regaining her speech she asked, did Daddy tell you that? She assumed her mother hadnt told him a word since she hadnt mentioned it moments before. Nope, he responded in a casual tone without looking up. How did you know that then? Regina confusedly asked. He paused his play just long enough to look at her briefly, shrug his shoulders, and say, The Joy of the Lord told me. He gave a quick grin and went straight back to his car game. What does that mean? He didnt respond and Regina realized she wasnt going to get any more out of him. Regina backed out of the room wondering what that meant. He wouldnt lie about something like that. He knows about The Joy of the Lord, too? If her mom or dad had told him he would have told her, not to mention that they would have told her first anyway. It just gave her another thing to ponder and pray about in her strange new life. . A little later the family was back together. Katherine Andrews worked on a simple dinner and Mark helped the kids finish their homework before Father Joe came over. Finally, the doorbell rang. Regina ran to the door to let their pastor in. Hi, Father. Regina, how are you? He walked in carrying a bag and wearing his clerics.

Fine, how are you? she asked as she led him to the dining room where her father was busy packing up their school work to clear the table for dinner. I am well and excited to be with you and your family tonight, Father Joe answered. Dinner will be ready in a little bit, Katherine Andrews called from the kitchen. Okay, honey. Have a seat Father, Mark offered the priest a chair. Actually, since we have a chance, do you mind if I bless the house? That would be fantastic, replied Mark. Where do you want to start? Right here will be fine. He took his stole out of his bag, kissed it, and put it around his neck. He also took out a vial of holy water and a book of prayers. Katherine, can you join us for a few seconds? Sure, Father, she answered and came into the dining room. Father Joe started the blessing rite with the whole family present. He then moved around the house sprinkling holy water in each room. By the time he was done, dinner was served. They all enjoyed light conversation over dinner. They talked about classes in school and a little about sports. After dessert Mark and Katherine cleared the plates and returned to the dining room table. Mark asked the question that the Andrews were all wondering. So, what did you want to talk to us about, Father? Yes, to the business at hand. I want to take to you about Vocatio et Missio. What? asked Regina. Sorry, Regina. Its Latin for Vocation and Mission. One of my favorite teachers in seminary, Father Albert Lemarque, used to use the expression when he talked about Our Lords ministry. Father Joe

looked up at the Andrews family, Katherine and Emmanuel to his left, and Regina and Mark to his right. He saw that all of them were giving him their full attention. He continued, Jesus first called the apostles to Him and then sent them out into the world to spread His word. Vocatio means a call and missio means a sending. Mark spoke first, Okay, Father. I think we are with you. He looked around to see nodding heads and a big grin on Emmanuel. Father Joe continued, I went to Reconciliation after you left last night, and I want to share why. During your family reception of the sacrament I realized I have not lived out my vocation as fully as I could. God called me to be another Christ and I have been satisfied giving less than my best. Despite not answering His call completely in my daily life, the Lord has seen fit to send me this mission. He gestured to Regina, and the rest of the family. The Seal of the Confessional prohibits me from sharing what any of you said yesterday but it doesnt restrict any of you. No one needs to speak but I think it would benefit everyone to consider what God has intended for their vocation and mission. Father Joe looked like he finished what he had to say. He expected a response but appeared satisfied that he had said his peace. Mark Andrews spoke first. Ever since Regina reminded me of my consecration to the Militia Immaculata, I have prayed with more conviction and felt drawn to the Sacraments. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a Rosary. I carry this with me at all times, like I did in college. I feel like I am carrying a holy sword with me. Regina thought of her training meditation and wielding the huge sword against the wooden dummies. Her father continued, I dont know what this means exactly, but I know I have to share St. Kolbes military spirituality with others in some way.

Regina again saw the brightness in her fathers eyes that he had shown on Sunday when she had told him about Our Ladys desire for her knight. Father Joe nodded his head in agreement, happy that someone had shared. He looked at her mother who responded in turn. I told Father that I had felt a call to use my counseling skills at the Womens Crisis Pregnancy center for a long time. I confessed that I had avoided answering Our Lords voice with many different excuses. Helping Regina through her grief over Frank Rolands accident reminded me of how much I enjoy helping others talk through their problems and find comfort. As she spoke her words, Katherine face shined like she had opened a Christmas present. Regina felt like she had been left out. Father Joe and her parents could explain what they felt their missions were, but she didnt feel like just having visions was really a mission. It didnt seem like something she was doing, they had just happened. Gabriel did not really setup an appointment for a future vision, he had only hinted at seeing her often, so she couldnt be certain that there would be any more. What about me? Regina asked. Everyone looked at her. Even Emmanuel seemed like he thought this was a silly question. Father Joe responded. You? Its too early to tell exactly, but all of this is due to you. But I didnt do anything. Oh, but you did, said Father Joe. What? Father Joe smiled and explained simply, You said yes. Reginas face must have expressed her confusion so he continued, God called you, and you said yes. You took a heroic first step on a journey in a scary situation. I think we are all very proud of you. Her parents

nodded in agreement. She didnt know what the future held but she hoped that she could continue to step in the right direction. Reginas father said, Dont forget that God has called us to our missions through your faith. That is a big deal. Regina felt a lot better and thought about how Gabriel had told her that she needed to bring Gods word to the world. That is a mission! The dinner party ended and this time the family escorted Father Joe to the door to bid him goodnight. Afterwards, realizing how late it was, everyone started their preparations for bed. Mark came to his daughters room to tuck her in. Daddy, what is the Joy of the Lord? What do you mean, dear? You know, like from the Bible? The Joy of the Lord is my strength? Exactly? I dont know. I have heard some say that you have to have true joy in your heart to be strong in your faith. What makes you truly happy? Regina thought about shows she watched and her favorite music, but then figured those were things she just liked. I dont know. What makes you happy? You. Her father smiled and paused. And Manny, and mommy. I am happy for the gifts that God has given me. Sometimes I take them for granted, but when I really think about it, I am truly joyful for my family. Sweet dreams, G. He kissed her and left her room. Julianne? Do you have anything to add? Regina asked out loud, remembering to make the Sign of the Cross and praying in her mind. Continue to pray about it. You will find your answers, Regina. Regina felt the warmth of her angels embrace. She remembered that her mother had mentioned that she would take her to the hospital to

see Frank the next day. She prayed for strength and then fell asleep in prayerful thanksgiving for the family that brought her joy and strength.

Chapter 12 Muted Father Joe struggled to find the words that would explain Reginas situation as he drove to see Bishop Roberts. He had already spent much of the forty minute car ride just trying to think of how to start. A girl in my parish is having visions, he thought to himself. How am I supposed to break that in gently? Instinct must have taken over, because he did not recall any of the drive when he reached the Bishops residence. The stately home was next to the cathedral. Father Joe realized that he still had some time before his appointment so he decided to go to the chapel to pray for guidance. He hoped it would make a difference. He blessed himself as he entered the beautiful church and found a pew to kneel in. He didnt have much time so he began his prayers in earnest. Lord, give me strength. Holy Mother, be with me. He focused his thoughts on these two intentions. He looked up to the crucifix. His church had a resurrected Jesus on the cross, with His hands held upwards and His holy body healed from the pains of His Passion. The cathedral had a traditional corpus which showed Christs wounds very realistically. Father Joe looked at the eyes of Jesus. He could see the love of God there. His spirit stirred. Are you ready to suffer with me? The question came softly but with a substantial weight. If it is your will, Lord. The priest had resolved himself to go where this mission led him. Pray for your Bishop. He realized he had prayed for himself, but not for his superior. He had only begun when a familiar voice called him. Father Logan! Bishop Roberts had entered from a side entrance. I thought I saw you from my office.

Your Excellency, I was early, and I elected wait here. No offense to your waiting room. Father Joe smiled hoping to be diplomatic. He got up and greeted the prelate by kissing his ring. None taken, but please, lets go to my office for our meeting. They walked quickly to the bishops office making some small talk about the traffic and the weather. Coffee was offered and declined and both men made themselves comfortable in their seats. So, what is so important that it dragged you all the way out here to see me? Bishop Roberts was very friendly by nature. Father Joe felt that the Bishop was faithful to the teachings of the church but considered him a pragmatist in many regards. He usually focused on his role as an administrator before being a shepherd. Your Excellency, I have to tell you about something of a very spiritual nature that is occurring in my parish. The bishop looked intrigued. A young girl has related to me some visions of Our Lady and St. Joseph that St. Gabriel, the archangel, has shown her. It took several moments for Bishop Roberts to respond. He looked intently at the younger priest. Do you believe in the authenticity of these alleged visions? Yes, Your Excellency, I do. And what supports your belief? There are several things. For at least a month before she came to me, my spirit has been stirred. I have felt that something big for my ministry was coming my way. I have prayed and fasted in preparation since I had no idea when or what it would be. Also, the girl has no interest in making a spectacle of herself. She has followed my commands to keep the events secret. Only her family and myself know about this. Then there are the fruits of the Spirit that I have seen. The bishop jumped in with a question. What fruits?

The girls parents have each become energized in their faith. The Holy Spirit is calling both of them to service and prayer. I myself feel like I am on fire. I want to bring this fire to my parish. I feel called to preach the truth to the people. My prayer life has never been as engaged as it is now. I know God is calling me to a radical evangelization of my parish, then who knows. What are the visions about? Is there a message? That is a curious thing. This is not like Fatima, Lourdes, or even Medjugore. The girl is being shown images from the past. She saw the events before, after, and including Our Lords incarnation. I confirmed with her parents that there would have been no way of her knowing some of the details of the locations and traditions that she described. I see, replied Bishop Roberts. Father Joe sat silently, waiting to see what his superior would say. The bishop took some time before speaking. Father, you were wise to keep the visions quiet. We need to wait for them to play out before we make official pronouncements on them. Have the girl continue to speak only with you. It sounds like her parents can be trusted to keep silent as well. I will trust you to decide whether you need to contact me about the content of future apparitions. I agree, Your Excellency. Bishop Roberts went back to his thoughts. He felt a voice say, Christmas is coming, he shouldnt rock the boat. More people show up this time of the year and more donations. And about your mission Yes, answered Father Joe. He felt a chill go up his spine. I want you to maintain the status quo for now. Dont do anything you wouldnt normally do. Father Joe was stunned. What? Why? Dont rock the boat. Father, many people come to church only during the Advent and Christmas season. You should hope they stick around. You dont want to scare them away. Plus you cant risk scaring

away your regular parishioners. Think of the mortgage on your new school addition that you are already behind on. With all due respect, Your Excellency, I really feel the Lord wants me to bring His word to my people. Whos in charge here. Father Logan, this is not a suggestion. I order you to keep your preaching the same as usual. The bishop did not raise his voice but he was sufficiently stern. He knew this priest would take his vow of obedience seriously. Father Joe badly wanted to argue, but the bishop thought correctly. He would not easily break his vows of obedience to his superior. Angry thoughts swirled in his head but he battled them with prayer. He heard in response, forgive him, he knows not what he does. Father Joe conceded, Yes, Your Excellency. He laid down his pride and prayed that he could do Gods will. For the time being, this seemed to be it. The tension that had built in the bishops frame slowly released and he said, Thank you, Father Logan. Please let me know if anything disturbing occurs. Father Joe bristled at the fact that Bishop Roberts wanted him to do the dirty work of keeping things quiet and normal. The two exchanged pleasantries and Father Logan began the long, lonely drive home. He did not know how he would contain the raging spirit within him but he prayed that the Lord would guide him. Soon, He would. While Father Joe had his appointment with the bishop, Regina spent an uneventful day at school. She had shared with her father her frustration at the challenges of focusing on her classwork when a much greater world had opened up for her. Daddy, what do I do? School seems so unimportant now. I know exactly how you feel, G.

Really? Yes. Since you told me about Our Ladys desire for my knighthood, the thought is almost always on my mind. I had the same problem at work doing my job, but then I found some inspirational quotes from St. Josemaria Escriva. Whos that? He was a very wise and holy priest who founded Opus Dei. It is a special organization in the church that focuses on doing your daily work as a living prayer. Opus Dei means the work of God, right? Regina asked. How did you know that? Mark Andrews was surprised. I have no idea. When her father spoke the words, she just knew what they meant. It just came to me. Mark gave her a look of wonder but let the issue drop. He continued, He taught that doing your daily tasks, no matter how plain, sanctifies you. In other words, you can become a saint by being the best daughter, student, piano player, athlete that you can be. Just do your bests to respect the gifts that God has given you. So, by doing my work in school and paying attention, I am both praying and becoming more holy? Thats what he taught. This comforted Regina. After her visions, she had begun to envision school as a prison where she would be between encounters with God. Her father gave her hope that her life could be a continuum of holiness. That helps a lot Daddy. Thanks. She tried to follow the advice from that conversation and found that it really helped her get through the day. She definitely felt closer to God through her attention to her daily work. While she had her mind set on school, her spirit, however, was preparing to make amends to Frank Roland.

The first thing she said when she got home from school was, Can we go see Frank now, Mommy? Sure, honey, replied Katherine. It took her a few seconds to look up the number for the hospital and get the room number from the receptionist. She got connected and Regina could hear the phone ringing. Hello, Mrs. Roland. Regina guessed a woman must have answered. Oh, hi Joan. This is Katherine Andrews. Is Louise there? Regina knew that Joan was Mrs. Rolands sister. Reginas excitement for doing her penance after Reconciliation and making up with Frank began to deflate as she watched her mother desperately try not to cry as she listened on the phone. She didnt say a word until Franks aunt was done. Im so sorry, Joan. Send Louise our best. Yes, we will say a prayer right away. Regina could tell something was terribly wrong. Is Frank Regina could not finish the question. Her mother looked at her warmly, her eyes glistening with tears. Guessing Reginas thoughts, she said, No, Regina, no. Hes still with us. He just had to be rushed to surgery because of some complications. His aunt says its pretty serious and she asked us to pray for him. Regina could do nothing more than fall into her mothers arms and cry. After Regina recovered and her father came home, the family prayed together. They tried to go about their normal business and ended the evening playing a game together to lighten the mood. Regina continued to pray for Frank long after she had been tucked in. She didnt remember falling asleep, but she woke suddenly in the middle of the night. Julianne! Her angel was present to her again. Regina looked at her shimmering in her room and she jumped out of bed to stand by her side.

Youre back. I mean, I know you are always with me. I just, I can see you again. Reginas smile hurt it was so wide. Yes, Regina. You are receiving many graces right now. Come on, we are going back to the Nativity. Is St. Gabriel coming back too? Lets go Regina! said Julianne as she left the room. Downstairs, the two fell to their knees in prayer. Only a few moments passed before the archangel appeared in their midst. Despite the time they had spent together already, Regina bowed deeply, awed in his presence. When he finished his materializing, he spoke softly. Regina, come sit with me again. Upon his invitation, Regina jumped up and glided to his side. It is so good to see you again. You have something to ask me? Gabriel said. Regina knew that he had read her mind. Is Frank going to be alright? You have much to see before you find out about that, my dear, Gabriel said cryptically. I just I really want to say sorry to him. Gabriel smiled, comforting Regina. Come, hold my hands. You have accepted your mission, now it continues. She reached out to experience the odd sensation of her mind and body separating through time and space. Regina found herself back in time once again. She looked around and saw the beautiful architecture of the Great Temple off in the distance. That is Jerusalem, right, Gabe? Very good, child. We are in the hill country outside of Jerusalem. You could call it a suburb. It is actually several months before the last visions you saw of the Annunciation. If you look over there you can see

the house of Our Ladys cousin, Elizabeth. Here comes her husband Zechariah now. Regina looked over to see an elderly man wearing special robes walking with difficulty up the hill on a road from Jerusalem. She walked toward him with Gabriel to get a better look. Those clothes look like they have special meaning, Regina commented. Yes. Zechariah is a priest of the division of Abijah. There are twenty four orders of priests that take turns performing certain religious duties in the Great Temple on a rotating cycle. He is about to begin his two weeks of service. Zechariah reached his house and entered followed closely by a girl and an angel he could not see. Once inside he was greeted by a woman that Regina thought could be as old as her grandmother. My love, why do you look so upset? The woman came up to Zechariah and embraced him briefly. She pulled back and caressed his cheek. Will we ever find peace, Elizabeth? Will we greet the kiss of death still forsaken by our countrymen? His face displayed his sorrow. Why do you let them bother you so? asked Elizabeth, seeing the pain her husband was in. It just isnt fair. We are both from priestly families. We have always been faithful to the Lord. We have given our lives to His service, but they talk about us like we are sinners! Right in front of me! Zechariahs voice steadily climbed to nearly a shout. Its just talk. They are fools that have only their gossip to keep them company. Let them think our barrenness is a curse from God. What can we do but continue to pray that He give us a child, as He did to Father Abraham and Sarah, Elizabeth reasoned.

Your wisdom has been my foundation for all these years, dear wife. I am sorry that I troubled you with my complaints. Elizabeth and Zechariah shared a tender moment. They smiled and looked into the others eyes. Elizabeth suggested, Come let us thank the Lord for the food He has given us. Then you can eat to regain your strength. Tonight we can raise our prayers for a child again like we always do. They walked further into the house and out of sight leaving Regina and Gabriel alone. What are they talking about Gabriel? I dont understand whats happening, Regina asked. Regina, throughout the ages, people have been cruel to each other for so many reasons. So many have suffered for things such as the color of their skin or the land of their birth, but in Our Lords day married couples without children were mercilessly ridiculed in the public square. People assumed that the barren couple had sinned in some way or were cursed by God to live a fruitless life. Not only did they have to live with the sorrow of not having children, but they also had to live facing the shaming stares of their peers. Zechariah and Elizabeth never had children. Despite being from priestly families they are scorned by others for their misfortune. Thats terrible. It is strange how times have changed. In your day, people who are blessed with many children are looked at with scorn. Many couples go out of their way to reject Gods plan of parenthood for them, Gabriel lamented. Regina felt her usual dose of compassion for Zechariah and Elizabeth. Can we go inside and see them? No. As I said, Zechariah will soon begin his turn in the temple. You needed to see the holy couple in their sorrow. Now we will move to Jerusalem a week into the future. The world melted away.

Once she regained her focused Regina recognized the familiar setting of the great temple. She saw many priests all dressed like Zechariah. She searched the faces and finally found him. They were standing around and seemed to be playing some kind of game. What are they doing? Regina asked. They are casting lots to see what roles the priests will have for their time of temple service. There are many sacred duties to perform and chance will decide who gets to do what, Gabriel answered. Regina watched as they decided who would slaughter the animals, capture the blood, trim the wicks of the candles, and several other minor duties. Several priests were left when they began the process of deciding who would bring the sacrifices into the temple. We will now cast lots for who will offer the incense in the temple, one of the priests, who looked like he was in charge, said. The group started to murmur amongst themselves. Something significant seemed to be happening. Why are they acting like that? Regina asked. The incense offering is considered the best and most honorable duty for the priests. This is a special moment. Gabriel seemed excited himself. Zechariah, who still had no assigned duty, cast his lots with the rest of the remaining priests. Regina could not figure how the process worked but she watched as the men examined the results. The priest in charge boldly proclaimed, Zechariah is the winner. He will offer the incense. Immediately, whispers were heard amongst the crowd. Regina could not hear what was being said, but by the look on Zechariahs face, she could tell the whispers upset him. Regina and Gabriel watched as the priests bustled about doing their appointed tasks. Many of them stole nasty glances at Zechariah. Gabriel knew that Regina could see their stares and explained, They dont feel

its right that Zechariah got the best job. Remember they feel that he has no children due to some hidden sin. Regina was so angry that she couldnt even reply. The only thing that helped her was how interesting she found all of the rituals. The priests lit candles, slaughtered animals, and cleaned up blood. The activity seemed to be building up to something. The priest in charge called to his brothers, The time for the offering has come. Let us approach the sanctuary and brother Zechariah will enter and burn the incense to begin the ceremony. Regina and Gabriel walked with the crowd up the temple steps to approach the mount. Zechariah ignored the dirty stares of some of his peers and solemnly passed beyond the curtain to the inner sanctum. The others waited outside and chanted the proscribed prayers. Come, let us follow, said Gabriel. Is it okay? asked Regina. This is why we are here. They passed behind the curtain to see Zechariah who was preparing to burn the ceremonial incense. He prayed and gestured according to his custom as Regina watched with interest. Here we go again, warned Gabriel as a bright light startled both Regina and Zechariah. Zechariah shielded his eyes with his arms. Regina looked at the source of the light and as the flash faded she recognized a familiar face. Its you again, Gabe! I was pretty busy back then. Well, I am always busy, but I dont always get to reveal myself to humans. God gave many holy people special graces to see me like you can. These visits have not always been recorded for people to see. Regina turned to see that Zechariahs shock from the blinding light had been replaced by fear. His face clearly showed it. He stared at the old Gabriel who stood at the side of the altar for a moment than fell to

his knees unwilling to raise his eyes. Regina marveled at how similar the scene was to the Annunciation. The old Gabriel spoke first. Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Regina looked at the old man and saw him look up when he heard his name. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. Even though she had heard this story before, Reginas heart pounded with happiness for Zechariah now that she had seen how he and Elizabeth had suffered. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink, Gabriel continued to say. The angel beside Regina explained, That means he will be a Nazirite like Samson and Samuel. His parents will have to consecrate him in a special way according to Jewish customs to live a special vocation towards God. Its like being a priest but more specific. Regina nodded in understanding. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mothers womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers toward children and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people fit for the Lord. The old Gabriel finished his declaration and stared at Zechariah to await his response. Regina also waited, but now she saw an angel and a demon floating around Zechariah battling with swords. Whats happening? she asked Gabriel. Zechariahs guardian and his tempter are each trying to direct his thoughts. His faith and doubt are both trying to take hold. The battle waged on and it seemed that the tempter took the upper hand. Zechariah prepared to speak.

How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years. The angels eyes closed to slits displaying his anger. Regina feared for Zechariah as she asked, Why were you mad, Gabe? Zechariah is asking for proof that what I said would happen. He knows that he had prayed for this very thing his entire life, but now that his prayer has essentially been granted he wants assurance. His tempter has made his trust in God waiver. When I came to you Regina, you doubted yourself but you trusted that I came from God and you believed my words. Watch what I say. The old Gabriel seemed to swell in size and once again lit up with a heavenly aura. He spoke with a terrifying calm, I am Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce this good news. But now, you will be speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time. Zechariah grabbed his throat. He tried to plead with the angel but found his sentence had already been carried out. Regina had not thought about how scary the moment that Zechariah lost voice was when she learned about it in Sunday school. Seeing it now, made Zechariahs punishment frighteningly real. He fell to his knees and wept in sorrow. The old Gabriel left and the current Gabriel said, Let us go outside and wait for Zechariah to finish his prayers for forgiveness. Outside the sanctuary the other priests started to grumble about waiting for their brother to finish. What is he doing in there? one yelled. We have so much more to do! another agreed. They all started to chatter amongst themselves to pass the time. Regina just kept thinking about Gabriels words about John and tried to fully grasp their significance. Several minutes passed before Zechariah

pushed aside the veil that hid him from everyones sight. He ran into the middle of the crowd and began to gesture frantically. The chief priest said, What? What is it, Zechariah? Zechariah pointed to the sanctuary and to the sky trying to convey what had just happened. He lost his voice, someone said. He lost his mind, someone else responded. Many of them laughed. I think he saw something in the sanctuary, said the high priest. Zechariah nodded vehemently in agreement. You saw the Lord? Zechariah shook his head. You saw a ghost? Zechariah shook his head again. An angel, perhaps? Zechariah nodded, his eyes wide open with excitement. And the angel took your voice? Sounds more like a demon, one of his detractors said to rounds of laughter. Zechariah looked at them in disgust and bolted from their midst. As the vision started to fade Regina saw that he ran for the hills. He ran for home. He went to his holy wife, his Elizabeth. He knew he could explain it to her, and when he did, she would believe.

Chapter 13 The Visitation The transition between the two scenes left Regina dizzy but she quickly found her bearings. It was early morning as the sun was rising in the east. Regina stood outside a house similar to Rachel and Malachis. Where are we? Regina asked. This is the house of Joseph and Mary. Since we last saw them, Joseph was able to move forward the date of their marriage so Marys holy pregnancy would not be noticed as abnormal. Mary has lived here for only a few weeks, Gabriel answered. The door of the house opened and Mary walked out. Regina thought she glowed even brighter in the morning light. She seemed to be taking a moment to enjoy the new day. Suddenly, something came upon her. Mary touched her stomach and drew in a deep breath. She had a faraway look on her face as if her mind had left for a moment. Then, she rushed inside. Regina followed. Joseph! Joseph! Mary called for him. He came out of the small room he had made for himself to sleep in. What is it? God has called me to go to my cousin Elizabeths in the hills of Judea. She is also expecting. Did He speak to you in your prayer like you have told me He does? I marvel at your faith and your relationship with the Lord. No, normally when He speaks to me I can feel Him call me from above. She paused and held her hand over her belly again. But this time His call came from within. She looked at Joseph in astonishment and he shared her thoughts. This child had only begun to bring them wonder and blessings. How long do plan on staying?

I dont know. Then lets prepare to be gone for a while. It took two hours for Joseph and Mary to pack and make arrangements for their house to be cared for in case they didnt return right away. When they finished their work the journey began. Regina and Gabriel joined the Holy Family on their journey. This time the Lord was truly with Mary and the prayers and conversations with God she voiced inspired and awed Regina. She saw that it moved St. Joseph as well. Mary spoke at length about the glory and majesty of God. Joseph would add his praises and humble thoughts from time to time, but mostly he just enjoyed Marys words and company. They prayed the Psalms and also discussed plans for their house. They passed time as they traveled to Judea in this way. Regina and Gabriel would fast forward in time whenever the couple spent their time in silence. Although she witnessed a multitude of prayers and conversations between Mary and Joseph, when Regina finally saw Zechariahs house at the top of a distant hill, she felt like the whole trip had only lasted a few moments. They made their way up the hill and reached the front of the property where they were greeted by a servant who was tending the household. Greetings to the house of Zechariah, priest of the order of Albicah, and his wife Elizabeth. Are you expected by the masters of the house? asked the worker. Joseph answered, No. I am Joseph and this is my wife Mary. She is cousin to Elizabeth. She has come to aid her in her expectation. Very good. Please come and wait in the portico, I will fetch my mistress. Mary and Joseph entered and stood in the open space inside the gate that was bigger than their entire house. It was neatly kept and

impressively decorated. In a minute, Elizabeth and Zechariah appeared at the opening where the servant had left through. Mary! I am so glad you came, what a pleasant surprise. Elizabeth walked through the space between them clearly slowed by her advanced pregnancy and aided by Zechariah. She was seven months along at this point. As she embraced her cousin, Mary spoke for the first time. Congratulations, dear Elizabeth. Elizabeth shuddered and broke their embrace, taking Mary by the hands. Mary! Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Mary looked at Elizabeth, stunned. She stole a glance towards Joseph who had the same look on his face. Zechariah was amazed as well. Elizabeth continued, Who am I, that the mother of my Lord should visit me? Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled. Gabriel explained to Regina, In that moment, many things happened. First, Our Lord extended the Baptism of the Holy Spirit that He had already granted to His mother before her birth and St. Joseph at their wedding, to his cousin John and his mother. The infant John leapt in his mothers womb from the joy and his mother spoke with wisdom the Spirit granted her upon her Baptism. Regina accepted his words and waited to see what would happen next. Mary was moved by the miraculous words her cousin had spoken. With tears in her eyes, she raised her eyes to heaven in thanksgiving for the many blessings God had granted her with. Now, the Spirit came from within her womb and she experienced a heavenly ecstasy and spoke: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaids lowliness;

behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever. That was beautiful! exclaimed Regina. The words burned themselves into her memory. There were so many ideas that Mary had expressed. Gabriel knew Reginas thoughts and explained. That is known as the Magnificat or the Canticle of Mary. It is a profoundly important prayer in the life of the church. Priests and religious pray it every night at evening prayer during the Divine Office. Regina imbued with gift of knowledge began, Her soul and spirit were bursting out of her with the love of God. Thats amazing. Yes. Remember, she was always blessed with special graces throughout her life, but at this moment God is truly present within her. She is overcome with happiness and allowed to prophesy. Generations have called her blessed, but she gives all of the credit to God. The Mighty One did the greatest thing ever to her, said Regina. The Father allowed Mary to bring Jesus into the world, to give Him to the rest of us. She considers herself His handmaid for doing this work. The greatest job that anyone ever did, Gabriel shared.

Reginas understanding continued to grow. She gives credit to God for what He has done for her and praises His name. Too often people only go to God with petitions, praying for things they want. Mary turns to God in praise and thanksgiving for what He gave her out of His love. Regina vowed to be more thankful like the Virgin Mary. She says Gods mercy is to those who fear him. What does that mean? You see fear as a negative thing? I think of monsters and ghosts when I hear the word fear. The world makes you think that way, but Fear of the Lord is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Do you fear punishment from your parents, Regina? Yes. Of course you do, but tell me, what do you fear most about your parents? Regina thought for a moment and responded, I dont know. Let me help you. Picture yourself at a carnival or at the zoo. What would be the most fearful thing that might happen to you? Gabriel was clearly leading somewhere. Again Regina thought, but this time she had an answer. Losing my parents in the crowd! What do you fear more? Punishment or losing your parents. Losing my parents. Why? I can stand receiving a punishment for something Ive done wrong, but I couldnt bear being apart from my parents and their love. Exactly. Do you understand Fear of the Lord now? I think so. It is fear of losing your relationship with God, so you do whatever it takes to stay close to Him.

Right. Very good, Regina. What do you think about the might of His arm? He uses it to take down the arrogant, the mighty, and the rich. He lifts up the lowly and tends to the poor. You were hearing from the heart and soul of Mary. Where else have you heard that kind of talk? That is what Jesus is always saying in the Gospels! He was saying it right then through His mother as well. Woah! Thats the third time Ive seen Our Lord act through Our Lady. She was thinking of the little girl at the well and the Baptism of Fire of John the Baptist only moments before. There were so many other times that you wont get to see. Our Lord privately worked miracles all of His life. The Gospel writers only captured those that were meant to be public. Mary acted as His provider, protector, and teacher, but often as a conduit for His grace, just like she continues to do from Heaven. This moved Regina deeply. It was Marys role from the beginning. She was always a vessel for God. Yes, and she ends her song with an acknowledgement of God remembering His promise to save Israel with the Messiah. She knows who she carries in her womb and what He will become. All of the things they had discussed inspired Regina to plan on meditating on the Magnificat when she got a chance. Our Lord gave a preview of what His divine message would be thirty years in advance, explained Gabriel. St. Joseph and Mary will get to repeat this prayer back to Jesus as He grows up. He will hear the words He inspired His mother to say over and over until it becomes His refrain throughout the Gospels. Regina accepted the angels words and returned to the scene. No one had moved while she and Gabriel had discussed the significance of

the Magnificat. Now that Regina had returned her attention, the scene continued. Elizabeth, along with Joseph and Zechariah in opposite doorways, had watched Mary rapt with admiration. Joseph had grown accustomed to such language from Mary and Zechariah was mute so Elizabeth spoke first. Oh, Mary. For years, your mother, Anne, shared my childless sorrow, and she gave me such consolation when her prayers were finally answered with you, the miracle child. Fourteen years later, you come to me, after the Lord blessed me with the miracle I so desired, to feed my spirit with the graces from your divine infant. My body is old and tired, but you have renewed in me the spirit of my youth. God is great. And holy is His Name. Zechariah and Joseph moved towards Mary, who had regained her senses completely after losing herself in the ecstasy of the Heavenly speech. Joseph just smiled as he took his place beside her, while Zechariah took her hand, kissed it, and placed it on his own head. Whats he doing? asked Regina. Zechariah is asking Mary to bless him. He is so sorry that he doubted my words at the temple and he recognizes Marys incredible role as the Mother of God. He is asking for her blessing. Mary would never have dared to place her own hand on Zechariahs head to bless him because that was what an elder would do to a younger person. She allows it because she can see he insists. Mary allowed Zechariah to hold her hand on his head, and Regina saw them both shiver very quickly. Mary reflexively took her hand back and Zechariah recoiled as if he had been shocked. Gabriel answered Reginas question before she spoke it. Jesus just forgave Zechariah. In his heart, Zechariah was begging God to accept his apologies with a truly contrite spirit. The Father of Mercies heard his plea and through His unborn son conferred a

Sacramental Confession on the father of the man who would eventually herald His only sons coming. Zechariah looked at Mary with profound happiness. He puts his hands together and bowed repeatedly to show his thanks. If God forgave him, why cant he talk yet? He still has to do his Act of Contrition. Gabriel was deliberately coy. I suppose you arent going to tell me what that is, Regina guessed correctly. Gabriel simply smiled. The four holy people put the miraculous events behind them and settled in for the evening. They shared a meal and pleasant conversation as Elizabeth and Mary told each other about the amazing events surrounding the conception of their children. Joseph also brought up the story of the old man he encountered on the road to Nazareth. They all agreed that they would need to be extra wary of the devil and his tricks as their holy children were born and grew up. As they broke bread together, Gabriel offered Regina a profound observation. Little do they know, they are enjoying a kind of Eucharistic meal with the Lord in their midst. Its like they have a mini church right here, chalk full of saints and the Real Presence. Regina appreciated his deeply theological thoughts as much as her ten year old brain would allow while she watched the two couples prepare for bed and accept the joys of peaceful rest. When the scene jumped to the next day, Regina found herself watching a conversation between Mary and Joseph. I feel the Lord is calling me to stay with Elizabeth until she delivers, Mary told Joseph in a humble voice hoping that the news would find her husbands ears well. I also have felt that call, replied Joseph. I have already considered that I should leave you here to tend to your cousin while I

attend to the responsibilities I have contracted. My heart aches to be apart from you and the Holy Child, but I can also feel the Lord assure me that you will be taken care of in the house of your blessed kin. Mary had already packed the few things that she needed for her stay and they agreed upon a time well after the due date of Elizabeths baby for Joseph to return. Thinking of his commitments, Joseph felt like he would possibly be able to visit once in between, but the rest of the details were settled. Elizabeth assured Joseph that Mary would be well taken care of and he set off with a heavy heart to attend to his duties. There goes a true manly man, Regina. He is known as St. Joseph, the Worker, for this reason. He knew that while God called him to be the step-father of His only son, He also called him to show His Son that work was a path to holiness. Joseph is doing what he needs to do to prepare the way for Jesus just as John the Baptist will do, in his own way, Gabriel said. Regina watched as Joseph left on the donkey to return to Nazareth. She thought of how her father would leave her, Emmanuel, and her mother, when he clearly didnt want to, to go to work or to a conference. She understood the sacrifice he made so he could continue the work God called him to. She prayed her father would be able to live up to whatever God was calling him to in the personal mission he shared the night before at dinner. With these thoughts the vision ended and Regina returned to her own time. Is that the end of this story? asked Regina. No, my dear. The Lord has decided that you will see the rest of this story when you complete your Act of Contrition, Gabriel answered. So, I need to go and see Frank? Yes. Then you will see the rest of the vision. Okay. I will tell my mom to take me tomorrow.

Good night, Regina, said Gabriel as he stood and faded into a blip of light. Good night, Gabe, replied Regina. She returned to her room and tried to go to sleep. Thoughts of the vision continued to swim in her mind. She tried thinking through all of the events in her mind but got stuck when she got to the point that Zechariahs peers were mocking him. Regina got more and more angry as she thought back at the looks on the faces of the priests that first spoke of Zechariah in cruel ways and then were jealous of his selection as incense burner. She thought of the sadness that Zechariah and Elizabeth felt and it reminded her of how she felt when Frank had accosted her in front of everyone in the lunch room. She recalled how that had been the straw that had broken the camels back. All of the bullying from Frank had finally caused her to boil over and she began to dwell on her fury. The combination of her angry at Frank and her vengeful sympathy for Zechariah clouded her mind from love and she fell into wrath only for a moment, which was all the waiting demon needed. Suddenly, Regina felt a darkness enter the room. Her heart began to race and she felt frozen in time. Her eyes were closed and she couldnt open them to look at the presence that she clearly felt was there. She had never felt this kind of terror before. At first she could only hear the sound of her own heart pounding while she felt a crushing force pressing down on her. Then a grisly voice spoke in the darkness. So, your God has chosen you for an important mission. My lord has chosen me as well. Your angel will not always be able to protect you from me. Your fear is only a taste of what I will bring you. Regina wanted to cry out for her mother at first. Then she wanted to call out to her father. That was when she remembered her training. It wasnt HER father she needed. It was

Our Father, who art in Heaven, Regina began. The darkness recoiled a little and a familiar voice cried out to her. Regina, Im here, shouted Julianne, seeming to be out of breath. Regina continued her prayer now that her guardian angel had come to her aid. Julianne joined her and the demon waivered. Regina thought she had gained the upper hand but the evil surged back long enough to give her one final spine tingling chill. Next time Ill bring friends. The evil left. It wasnt long before Regina realized that tears were falling down her face. Her heart beat slowed and her breathing returned to normal before she could speak to Julianne. What happened? Im so sorry Regina, began Julianne. I was trapped by a group of tormentors who were led by your new tempter. His name is Atramors. It appears that your old tempter, Tenebraus is being punished. I think it was my fault too. I was too busy being angry and forgot to turn to prayer when the demon came upon me. Dont take it too badly, Regina. You will make many wrong steps on your journey, but God has faith in you. You will make it. Let us pray for strength again. They prayed together and Regina felt better. The terror of the spiritual battle began to dissipate. While calm enveloped her, she knew she would not forget the events of that night. Julianne prayed a Rosary with Regina until she was finally able to fall asleep.

Chapter 14 A Voice Cries Out Regina woke up rested but wary of her surroundings. She still carried some of the fear that had almost strangled her the night before. Although the suffocating pressure that she felt from the new tempter was gone, the memory was still very real in her mind. She said a prayer to set her mind right and got prepared for school. Mommy? asked Regina, when she finally got downstairs to eat the breakfast that awaited her, along with her mother and Emmanuel. Her father was already on the road to work. She really wished she could talk to him about the demons attack. She was afraid her mother would not take it well. She was also very curious to know what he was reading so early in the morning. Yes, dear? Katherine Andrews was already dressed and ready to go. She had been spending some time volunteering at a few different local womens shelter while the kids were at school. She told Regina and Emmanuel where she went each day, but since the locations were unfamiliar they both quickly forgot. Remembering that Emmanuel knew about her visions, she came right out with it. I had another vision last night, and St. Gabriel told me that for it to be completed I need to go see Frank as soon as I can. Her mother stopped what she was doing and looked at her for a moment. What was the vision about? I saw Zechariah lose his voice and Our Lady visit St. Elizabeth. Interesting, said Katherine. She seemed to be thinking of something. What? Oh, nothing. I will take you to see Frank today, right after school. I think Emmanuel can stay at Johnnys house.

Emmanuel seemed excited at the prospect of going to his best friends house. It meant playing with toy cars or video games. He talked about it all the way to school. It would be complete enjoyment either way. The day rolled along as normal, but then Regina started to dwell on battle with the new tempter and her visit to Frank and lost focus on her studies. Her thoughts drifted away from her visions into other things in her life until she heard Juliannes voice barely break through. Regina, focus on school. The nudge helped her shake her distraction. What happened to me? She hoped Julianne would respond. Your tempter slowly led you to think wasteful thoughts. You have not been doing the daily work that God wants you to do. Regina accepted her fault and spent the rest of the day dedicated to her school tasks. She did them with a prayerful spirit and found it gave her great strength to keep the demon at bay. She thought of her fathers words about the holiness of her studies and daily work and attended to them with purpose. At the end of the day, Regina left the school and found her mom in the usual spot. She always parked under a tree at the end of the parking lot. She opened the backdoor and threw her backpack into the car. Hi, mommy. Are you ready to go see Frank, Regina? Manny went straight to Johnnys house. Yes. Ive been thinking about a lot today. Okay, lets go. Regina hopped into her seat and they took the short drive to the hospital. On the way, Regina tried to think of how she was going to apologize to Frank for her part in the fight. She played over several different versions until she settled on Frank, I am so sorry for what I said to you about your dad. I wish I could take it all back and keep you from your accident, but I cant. I can only hope that you can

forgive me. She hoped that Frank would be merciful enough to accept her apology. They arrived at the hospital and asked the receptionist for Franks room number. The woman said he was in 832. They thanked her and took the elevator up to the eighth floor. When they stepped out, the first thing they saw was the nurses station. There was no one there so they decided to find Franks room for themselves. As they approached the room Franks mom stepped out. She looked up to see Regina and Katherine. Regina was scared for a moment, fearing that Mrs. Roland would be upset for her role in the accident. She expected to be yelled at, but instead she saw a big smile form on her face. Katherine, Regina, Im so glad you came. No one but family has been here to see Frank. Regina was relieved to not be on Mrs. Rolands bad side, but she was sad that Frank didnt have any friends to see him in his time of need. Youre very welcome, replied Katherine. Regina would really like to tell Frank that shes sorry for their fight. She is hoping to make amends with him. Oh, Im sorry dear. During the surgery the doctors felt the pressure on Franks brain was so great that they decided to induce a coma. He hasnt been conscious since then. The last few words were muffled with tears. Regina watched her mother go to embrace the rattled woman as she shook from the grief. Numb from the news Regina looked around the hospital hallway. Her eyes came across a crucifix on the wall. She looked into the eyes of Jesus and the sorrow in his eyes and saw them mirror her own. She continued to stare and unconsciously fell to her knees. O Lord, help me, she prayed. With that, a vision overcame her.

When Reginas vision returned she saw that she was back in Elizabeth and Zechariahs house. The house looked the same but when she looked about and saw Elizabeth she figured that some time had passed. Elizabeths belly now protruded out much further than it did when the vision had left off. Mary? Elizabeth called for her cousin as she shuffled across the room. At her age and with her condition she moved very slowly. Mary entered from another room and rushed to her cousins aid. Cousin, why are you out of bed? You should be resting. I was tired of lying down all day, but as I reached this room I felt my labor pains begin. Can you help me get back to my bed? Mary led her back to her bed and rushed to call the midwife. She told all the servants to get ready and she explained to a distraught Zechariah that everything would be alright. Regina watched as the servants whirred about in fast forward as the ordeal of the labor lingered on and on. Mary comforted Elizabeth in her pains with soft words and prayers. Elizabeth stayed calm but Regina could see that she was very uncomfortable. I think this is a sign, dear cousin, that my child is destined for the discomfort of many, said Elizabeth with a sly smile, between shallow puffs of breath. Im sure his day will come, but he will be a comfort to his faithful mother and father, Im sure, replied Mary. She wiped Elizabeths brow and massaged her back when she could stand to roll onto her side. Regina noticed that Mary had been working feverishly to keep Elizabeth comfortable and hydrated, but she had neglected her own wellbeing. Suddenly from the stress and strain of the long labor Mary swooned and collapsed into the arms of a servant who had noticed her starting to fade.

Elizabeth managed to command some servants to carry Mary to a bed in a nearby room. Zechariah saw the servants bring Mary out of the delivery room and helped them bring her to a place of rest. Regina and Gabriel followed them. Regina saw the worried look on Zechariahs face as he left Mary unconscious on the bed. Regina spent more time watching the frantic activity around Elizabeth as servants continued to bring fresh towels and clean water into the room. The child is nearing, said the midwife. The servants picked up their activity. One went out to inform Zechariah and some of the male servants who were waiting with him that the child was about to be born. They all smiled and began to pat Zechariah on the back and congratulate him. Regina returned to Elizabeths bedside. Its a boy, said the midwife. The same servant as before ran out to announce the news to Zechariah and the other men. Regina heard cheers go up from the crowd. Moments later, from where she stood, she could clearly see the look on the midwifes face go from excited to terrified. Hes not breathing! she exclaimed. All present let out a worried gasp. Zechariah, who had crept up to doorway to hear his childs first cries, instead heard the horrible news. Gabriel, who had remained strangely silent, finally spoke. You are going to like this. Regina, momentarily forgetting this story had a happy ending, was desperately terrified for the newborn child. She looked at Zechariahs face that showed a pain worse than that which he felt when he had been mocked by his peers. To almost have a son to hold, but then to lose him would be too much for his old heart to bear.

Then Regina saw a flash of revelation come across Zechariah, who hurried off from his waiting room. Regina followed him to the room where Mary rested. She was still asleep on the bed. Zechariah ran up to her unable to speak. He gently but firmly shook her shoulder until she came out of her slumber. Coming to, she saw the look on Zechariahs face and said, Cousin? What is it? Zechariah stood up and motioned for her to follow. Sensing great need, Mary raced after Zechariah who didnt wait to see if she was coming. They both ran into the delivery room where the servants were in tears and Elizabeth sat upright in shock. Mary, my son is not breathing, she finally cried out, with a look of desperate anguish. Regina could tell it was not a statement of fact, but a plea; a plea for her help, full of faith. Mary went over to the child, who was turning blue, and picked him up. She cradled him in her arms and lowered him to her own child. Regina saw a flash of light as Jesus reached through His mother and spiritual touched His cousin again, this time saving his life. The child cried out with a loud shriek, filling the house with a heavenly sound. Everyone exhaled in relief and the babe continued to bawl at the shock of the new world he had entered. Zechariah was led from the delivery room as custom required. Elizabeth could see some of her closer kin, but her gaze was on Mary and her child, who the young virgin still held. Thank you, Mary. Blessed are you, and blessed is the child within your womb. Mary smiled and handed the baby to his mother. The baby was swaddled and quickly calmed long enough to nurse. Mary, please bless my child. Mary seemed taken aback. She looked disturbed by the request. Why did Mary react like that? Regina asked.

Remember blessings would traditionally come from the elders in a family. It was considered an honor and privilege to bestow a blessing on a child. In her humble way Mary does not feel that she should be taking that honor, explained Gabriel. Is it still hard for her now? It will take her a lifetime to fully assume the role that God intends for her. She will teach Jesus the faith as he grows but she will also learn from Him what she is called to be. Elizabeth saw Marys reaction and whispered, so the servants would not hear, Please, it is fitting for the mother of my Lord and savior to bless my newborn child. Mary nodded and begrudgingly accepted her elders request. She cautiously extended her hand to the childs head and prayed for Gods will to be done in his life. The infant looked up at her gave a quick but clear smile. Gods grace had flowed and the blessing of the Almighty had been bestowed. Elizabeth smiled proudly and said, I am so glad that you are here Mary. Looking at Marys belly, she added, Both of you. The scene melted away and Regina found that she was moved to the living room still in Elizabeth and Zechariahs house. It had to be days later because the color that had escaped from Elizabeths tired face during her labor had returned and she was walking about. There were many new faces in the crowd, men and women alike. Everyone was dressed up for a special occasion. What is happening here, Gabe? This is now the eighth day after the babys birth. It is time for his circumcision according to Jewish custom. He will also be given his name, responded the angel. Regina walked over to where some women were talking to Elizabeth, while they waited for the ceremony to begin.

What are you going to name him, Elizabeth? We will call him John. John? Zechariah does not have anyone in his family named John. Surely he will want to name him for his father or grandfather, said another woman who set off to ask Zechariah what his thoughts were. Elizabeth did not seem to care in the least bit. Her attention was fixed on the miracle child in her arms. He slept through all of the commotion of the guests. Regina followed the woman to see where she went. She walked straight into another room where Zechariah was sitting with some other men. The woman whispered something into the ear of one of the men. Regina guessed that the man was her husband. He listened to what his wife told him and immediately spoke up, Zechariah, will you name the child after yourself, or perhaps your father? Zechariah looked at the man defiantly and shook his head. The man said, My wife says that Elizabeth wants to name your son John. Surely you would honor one of your ancestors by naming him after them. Zechariah got and walked over to where he had left his writing utensil. He grabbed a writing tablet, frantically wrote something down, and handed it to the man. The man read, His name is John. Here we go, said Gabriel. As soon as the man had read what Zechariah had written on the tablet Zechariahs eyes opened wide and he clutched his throat. He hummed for a moment, cleared his throat, and then spoke in a loud booming voice, which caused everyone in the house to come running. Blessed be the Lord, The God of Israel; He has come to His people and set them free. Zechariah paused for a moment as the gathered crowd all gasped in alarm. He continued looking intently at Mary. No one but Elizabeth,

Mary, Regina, and Gabriel could tell that Zechariah had his gaze fixed on her. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, Born of the house of His servant David. Through His holy prophets He promised of old That He would save us from our enemies, From the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers And to remember His holy Covenant. This was the oath He swore to our father Abraham: To set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship Him without fear, Holy and righteous in His sight All the days of our life. Zechariah paused again to take the infant John into his arms. He carefully held him aloft as an offering to heaven and said, You, My child shall be called The prophet of the Most High, For you will go before the Lord to prepare His way, To give his people knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our Lord The dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness And the shadow of death, And to guide our feet into the way of peace. Many of their guests exchanged questions of amazement. What does this mean? said one man. What will this child become? asked another. Regina smiled to herself. She looked at Gabriel who said, Before John the Baptist become the voice crying out in the wilderness, his father cried out in faith to atone for his doubt. He completed his penance and God graced him to speak the amazing words you just heard. Its

time for you to go back at do your penance. Speak with faith Regina, what you need to say. Regina barely had a moment to think about what Gabriel had meant before the vision finished and she fell harshly back into the real world. She realized that she was kneeling before the crucifix she had last seen before she had slipped back into the past. Regina, are you alright? Katherine asked. She heard her mother speak but her focus was on the face of Jesus. She remembered Gabriels parting words and set her heart on feeling the sorrow that she owed Frank and the God whom she loved above all things. Im sorry. The simple words were spoken barely above a whisper intended for only Jesus and Franks spirit to hear. Mom! The desperate plea came from the hospital room behind them. Regina turned faster than the others to see the look of joyful shock on Mrs. Rolands face. She gasped and turned to walk towards the voice. Frank? She ran into the room while Regina got off of her knees and walked to her mother. Mom, I want to see Regina, Franks voice was weak but clear. His mother ran to his bedside, embraced him, and began to kiss him frantically. Frank did not stop his mothers fawning but repeated, Mom? I want to see Regina. How did you , Mrs. Roland did not finish the question, but she did say, Regina, you can come in. She stepped forward unsure of what to expect. Frank was connected to several machines and many parts of his body were wrapped with bandages. His eyes were barely visible but they were focused on her as she entered. Ill go get the doctor, said Franks mom. Katherine Andrews waited at the door. Frank lifted his hand for Regina to take and she drew closer.

Frank, Im I know, I heard you. Thanks. What? How did you hear me? I dont even know. Besides I should be the one to apologize. No, no. I didnt end up in the hospital, protested Regina. Not just to you, Regina. To everyone I have been a pain to. Actually, I should thank you. What? I just had the most wonderful dream. My dad visited me from heaven. First, we did all of the things that I so desperately missed doing with him. I was so angry that he left me and my family, and I did take that anger out on everyone around me. He told me that even though he wasnt physically with us, he was with me every day. He has prayed that I would heal my broken heart and start to love again. He said he believed in me, and that you had been sent into my life to set me on a path to do great things. He just left me before I heard your voice calling from a great distance. I just followed it until I woke up. You were in a coma, Frankie, his mother said as she returned from calling the doctor. Was I? Frank didnt seem too worried about what state he was in. Yes, you almost died. Well, Ive never felt more alive. Mom, I want to go to confession, as soon as possible. Franks face beamed with joy. Tears ran down his mothers face. Regina and Katherine shared smiles while they both couldnt believe this incredible turn of events. Regina hugged Frank and said, Im so glad youre back, Frank. Me too. Katherine said, Lets go and let Frank rest.

Can you come back and visit? asked Frank. Regina turned to her mother who nodded. Regina and Frank smiled at each other and said their goodbyes. The Andrews headed home to enjoy their evening after this miraculous turn of events. Misero paced furiously in the space behind his desk while a cowering tempter sat quivering in the chair across from him. How could you let this happen? We had that boy! He was all set for a lifetime of sin. It wasnt my fault, boss. He was unconscious. I couldnt manipulate him at all. Our enemy just swooped in and grabbed him while he was comatose. The frightened demon was Frank Rolands tempter. He had never seen a conversion like that in all of his time. He had a great track record and he hoped Misero would take that into account in this situation. Mercy was not part of Miseros vocabulary. Normally, punishment would come, swift and strong. Tempters who failed had to be taught a lesson. Get out of my office, you fool! I dont have time for you. The trembling monster left quickly and relieved. Misero sent objects flying around the room without touching them. Things smashed here and there. If I dont get a handle on this soon, it will be my carcass thats punished and my pain that the Master will feast on. He thought of something and froze for a minute. He reached in his desk and pulled out a book. He flipped through it until he found what he was looking for. Ah, yes. The Job Rule. That should work nicely. He smiled. The next morning Regina awoke to the sound of her fathers voice in the distance. Her alarm clock would not go off for a while. She decided to walk downstairs to investigate and found her father sitting in the living room reading out of a red book.

Daddy, what are you doing? G. I didnt wake you up? Did I? Her father looked deeply concerned. She knew he tried to get up and leave early in the morning without disturbing anyone else. No. I woke up on my own, but then I heard your voice and wanted to see what you were doing. Regina thought it was possible that Julianne woke her up just to talk to her dad. Thanks, Julianne. Mark Andrews looked relieved. He motioned for Regina to sit by him on the couch. She joined him, deeply interested in what he had to say. This is a breviary. He showed Regina the book that was open to a certain page. It contains prayers that priests and religious are required to say at different points in their day, but anyone can join their prayer for their own morning and evening offerings. Do you do this every day? I used to, again, when I was in college. I fell out of practice and didnt even remember that I had this. I guess you could say that I have you to thank again for bringing me back to it. He smiled and made Regina feel both happy and embarrassed at once. How does it work? I mean what do you do? Well, it is kind of like the Liturgy of the Word at church. There are psalms, a reading, responses, a Gospel Canticle, pray-, he explained before Regina cut in. Canticle? Is that like the Magnificat? Her father smiled and looked a little surprised. I didnt know that you had remembered that name from RE. Im impressed. Regina remembered that her father had come home very late from a meeting. He must have found everyone asleep, including her mother. He did not know about the end of her visions.

I didnt. I just had visions of the birth of John the Baptist. I saw the Magnificat and know that it is called the Canticle of Mary. St. Gabriel also showed me the Canticle of Zechariah. Her father seemed amazed and appeared to understand something as well. Tell me more. She told him the whole story of the visions and Franks waking from the coma. Her father drank in her words. When she was finished he said, We will have to call Father Joe and see if he can see you soon, so you can update him on what you have seen. He looked at the clock. For now, I will just tell you that the words of Mary and Zechariah are so important, people pray them around the world every day. The Canticle of Zechariah for morning prayer and the Canticle of Mary for evening prayer. That is a lot of devotional prayers. The Angelus, the Divine Office Well, you eat three times a day dont you? Mark asked. Yes. The Lord in His wisdom has given us structured ways to feed our soul throughout the day as well. The explanation made a lot of sense to Regina. She thanked her father and found that she could still use some more sleep so she headed back up to her bedroom after kissing her father goodbye.

Chapter 15 Life After breakfast Regina went to her room to clean up some things she had left out during the school week. When she came back down she found her mother sitting on the couch reading a book intently. What are you reading? Regina asked. Her mother read an interesting variety of books on diverse topics. They would often talk about the different things that Katherine learned about. Its called to Left to Tell. Whats it about? Its about a woman named Immaculee Ilibagiza, who hid in a tiny bathroom with seven other women for three months. Why? Regina was already hooked. Katherine Andrews looked at her daughter as if she was measuring her for something. I guess you are old enough to know, Regina. She paused for a second, thinking of how she would begin. Some people were trying to kill her. Regina was scared but curious. Why? Basically, because she was different from them and they were afraid. Thats it? Its worse than that, Regina. Some of these people were her neighbors and friends, and they killed her parents and some of her siblings while she was hiding. Regina thought about how awful it would be if her family members were killed and she could do nothing to stop it. Even though Emmanuel annoyed her at times, she would be very sad if someone took his life. But how could they kill their own friends?

It is sad story that happens over and over throughout history. Bad leaders used words to make people think that others were less human than them. Words? Yes. In Africa there is a country called Rwanda. In Rwanda, there are two different tribes of people, the Hutus and the Tutsis. Tribes? Like Cherokees and Seminoles? Basically, Katherine answered. When the Belgians took control of the country many years ago from Germany, they favored the Tutsis because they looked more European. The Belgian governors gave people with a Tutsi background positions of authority and more opportunities for education and advancement. Didnt that make the Hutus angry? Yes. Not only was it unjust, but it was very dangerous and foolish because the Hutus outnumbered the Tutsis. Did the Hutus fight back? Not at that time, because the Belgian soldiers were far better equipped with guns and other weapons. They could not win that battle. Then what happened? When the Belgians left there was a fight for supremacy and the Hutu majority took over power. The Hutu government oppressed the Tutsis in minor ways as payback, but most people lived there lives ignoring the differences between themselves and their neighbors from the opposite tribe. The Tutsis took their turn as the inferiors in the country, but life seemed to go on. Then, things got a lot worse. Why? What happened? Hutu extremists took control of the government and started to broadcast on radio and television at all times that the Tutsis were not to be trusted. It was said that they were trying to take control of the country so they could be in charge again. They provoked the historical anger that

the Hutus had for the Tutsis when they were the favored people. The extremists called the Tutsis cockroaches over and over. They said that like cockroaches the Tutsis needed to be exterminated. Regina gasped at the language her mother used. What happened then? Death squads were formed. The government told the Hutus that anyone who didnt support the death squads were to be killed as Tutsi conspirators. What does that mean? That means that if you didnt kill or help in the killing you would die too. I would never kill someone. Even if I had to, promised Regina. I hope your conviction is never tested, dear. Fear can be a powerful motivator, even stronger than anger. It is more primal, more animal. So this girl, Im.., Im Immaculee, helped Katherine. Immaculee. She just hid? Not so easily. Her parents had to literally beg a Hutu minister to take Immaculee. He finally agreed and hid her in a tiny bathroom with seven other Tutsi women. They stayed there for three terrifying months. They never left? Not once. The minister managed to bring them scraps of food every so often, but they had to stay there the whole time. She went from 115 pounds down to 65. When she got out of that bathroom she found out that almost all of her family had been murdered. Rage built up inside of Regina, Was she angry?

That is the amazing part of this story Regina, Katherine replied. All of the tension that her mother had built up so far quickly dissipated in one statement. What do you mean? At first she felt great wrath, but all she could do in that cramped bathroom was pray. She would pray all Rosaries for herself and her fellow prisoners. She would pray all day and then she had visions of Our Lord. What did he say? He told her to pray for His Divine Mercy, not only for her but for the killers in the streets. So she did. For hour after hour, day after day she prayed. She gained a great knowledge about evil and its power over the world. Did the others pray with her? No, they thought she was crazy and resented her at first, since she had come in at the end to make the bathroom even more crowded. But eventually her love and care for them in their sickness and hurt won them over. How was she rescued? Eventually the violence ended and peace talks were negotiated by outside countries. All of the women were going to be taken to a UN safe zone, but they were intercepted by a Hutu death squad. Regina gasped, but her mother continued expecting her fear. The killers taunted them and threatened their lives, but Immaculee knew that Jesus had not led her this far only to be killed. She yelled out Go away evil! A killer who held a machete, ready to strike her down, paused for a moment. He looked like he saw a ghost and then simply walked away! No way! said Regina in disbelief.

Immaculee found out that all of her family except for one brother who was out of the country during the massacre had been killed for sure. Jesus had touched her in a special way so she went to man who killed her parents in prison and forgave him as Our Lord had told her to. Thats amazing! Regina remarked. She now goes around the world telling her story of learning to forgive in the face of hatred. I dont know if I could do that, said Regina. Im so glad that that kind of killing could never happen in our country. Katherine Andrews had been smiling at the thought of the positive ending in the Immaculees story but the smile fell of her face harshly, as if she had been slapped. Regina noticed the change in her countenance. What is it, mommy? Her mother seemed to wrestle with something in her mind. I think you are old enough to know, Regina. Although it isnt quite the same, there is a slaughter that happens in this country that I find just as horrifying, Katherine carefully worded. Reginas curiosity was piqued. She had to know what her mother meant. What are you talking about? In Rwanda, the Hutus used dehumanizing words to make it easier to deal with the Tutsis, who they considered a problem and a threat to their way of life. In the United States, many people have done the same thing, with babies in their mothers wombs. What? Regina did not understand at all what her mother was talking about. She had just told her that the Hutus felt threatened by their old masters, the Tutsis, but, How can anyone feel threatened by a baby? Do you know what an abortion is, Regina? No, but I know we pray to end it at church. Is it a disease? She couldnt think of what else it would be.

No, it is when a doctor kills a womans baby before it is born. Reginas horror must have been evident in her eyes because she could see the regret in her mothers face in an instant. Regina could tell that her mother had wished that she hadnt taken the conversation in this direction. Thats impossible! Regina yelled in disbelief. She thought of the handful of baby showers she had been to for her mothers friends and family. The large bellies of the soon-to-be moms were a clear sign that a new life would join the world soon. She had been to several baptisms in her short life and she couldnt think of any other occasion where everyone was that happy. Her view of the world had irrevocably changed forever. Its not, said Katherine. Unfortunately its very real and how it happens is very much the same as what happened to the Tutsis in Rwanda. Fighting back tears, Regina asked pleadingly, How? In 1973 the Supreme Court heard a case called Roe versus Wade. They decided based on the evidence of the time and some terrible logic that an unborn child was not a person, but was actually part of the mothers body, like an organ or a bone. The decision was set that a woman can do what she wants with her own body, so women can choose to kill their own child growing inside them. Katherine tried to explain it as plainly as possible, but her adult mind did not realize that Regina didnt care about the history or legality of the procedure. She had one simple question. Why would anyone want to do something so horrid? Regina felt like her whole world was crumbling. She had always believed in God, and the events of the past few weeks had made her believe in the Devil, but she felt that she wouldnt have needed the visions to tell her that evil was real, if she had only heard this about the world she lived in.

No one. What? Reginas head was spinning. None of this made any sense to begin with and her mother wasnt making things easier by being confusing. No one wants to kill their own child, but they will get rid of a problem or an unplanned pregnancy or a fetus. This is what people who think that abortion should remain legal do. They use words to dehumanize the baby. If you hear those words enough you lose your touch with the truth. They arent killing their babies, they are making a choice. Katherine looked at her daughter struggle with this startling revelation so she continued, Regina, the Hutus could see the Tutsis with their own eyes. They had known them as friends and neighbors for years. They had laughed, played, and even prayed with them, yet when they were told that the Tutsis were cockroaches for long enough, and when enough fear was impressed upon them, they were ready to kill. Unfortunately, an unborn baby has little hope when visible people have been killed throughout history. We have to do something, Regina said adamantly. You can pray, said her mother. Pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her feast day is coming soon. Our Lady of what? Regina asked. Guadalupe. Why? 500 years ago before Europeans conquered the Americas, there were many native civilizations that existed. One of them was the Aztecs. They were known for their power and their brutality. They struck fear into their opponents for their use of human sacrifice in their religious rituals. Real people?

Yes, thousands of people would be killed a year. One day, a native named Juan Diego, who had converted to Christianity, was walking on a path outside of what is now Mexico City. He was stopped by a vision from Our Lady herself. She asked him to go to the bishop and have a church built for her. Did the bishop believe him? No. He went and told the bishop, but he didnt believe him and asked Juan to come back with a sign. So, when he went back to Mary, she told him to take a bunch of roses, that didnt grow in that part of the world, which miraculously appeared on the rocky mountainside, to the bishop. He gathered them up in his apron, called a tilma and set off for the bishops. He opened up his tilma to drop the roses that he had gathered as a sign. They believed him when they saw the roses? asked Regina. Not quite. When he opened up his cloak and threw the roses on the table, the men gathered there were not really that impressed with the roses. Why not? Regina thought that miraculous roses would be pretty cool to see. Because when he threw down the roses, everyone could see a beautiful image of Our Lady imprinted on his cloak. The same image you see every time we go to church. The one you called the Colorful Mary when you were little. Regina knew exactly which one her mother was talking about. It was an image of Mary where she looked like a young indian girl. She was standing on a moon and a little baby was underneath her. It was right before the entrance of the church, on the opposite side of the painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. What happened then?

The Bishop believed the story and had a church built upon the spot Our Lady had requested. A bigger church stands there today. It houses the tilma of Juan Diego which still miraculously exists today 500 years later with the same image, Katherine recounted. Still? How could it? Regina thought of her own favorite clothes that had worn through in less than a couple of years. She didnt see how a piece of clothing could last for that long. It truly is a miracle. Scientists have studied the image for many years and can scientifically say for sure that it should have disintegrated long ago. There are many other miracles associated with the image but the point of the story that connects to what we were talking about is that the human sacrifice ended 500 years ago around the time of this apparition. Add to that Our Lord decided to depict His Mother in her pregnancy with Him on the tilma and we say that Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Unborn. We pray to her to help end the human sacrifice of abortion that is happening now. The amazing story helped to subdue Reginas fears and anger. Okay, mommy, I will pray, but what else can I do? Katherine thought for a few moments about this, wanting to help her daughter find some way to satisfy her conscience. I know. You can come with me to the Crisis Pregnancy Shelter today and sit in the side room and pray. There may even be some envelopes for you to stuff. Katherine Andrews had made the shelter one of her places to volunteer at. She felt that it was her mission to use her counseling skills to help women. You could say that I am doing this work because of you and your mission, Regina. It would be good for you to go and see the place. Okay. Regina went with her mother to the small office building. She brought her backpack full of school work and some art supplies to keep

herself busy in case she couldnt remain focused on prayer. Her mothers shift went from noon to five and she wanted to be sure that she had enough to do. When they arrived, her mother showed her to a comfortable little break room, where she unpacked her things and made herself at home. If you really need something come and get me, but otherwise just hang out here and I will stop in often to check on you. Okay, Regina answered. She took out her Rosary and felt confident that she would be able to keep herself occupied while her mother helped people in the office down the hall. Katherine Andrews headed down the hall to sit at the phone banks. It took her some time to get used to the process of being a volunteer counselor at the center but she felt like she had it down. Hi, Katherine, said a woman dressed in a business suit. Hi, Susanna, replied Katherine, feeling a little underdressed. Susanna Marcos, the director of the center, always wore something stylish and professional. She was in her late fifties and had been retired from being a professional psychologist. She now volunteered as the director of the center 40 hours a week, sometimes more. Katherine was wearing some comfortable clothes that were not nearly as fancy as Susannas. Could you do a huge favor for me? asked Susanna. What is it? Katherine asked. Our face to face counselor called in sick today and I have a meeting I have to go to with a potential donor. Could you be available to counsel a walk-in if we get one? The request took Katherine by surprise. When she started her volunteer work she had considered the possibility of doing face-to-face counseling. She had looked forward to it, one day, but now that it stared her in the face, she felt a little nervous.

Are you sure I am ready? Katherine asked, apprehensively. Since you came in here last week, I knew you were a natural. I feel that counseling someones mind is a skill, but helping heal their troubled soul is a gift. During your training I have had to monitor your calls, and you do both wonderfully, Susanna said with a huge smile on her face. Katherine Andrews smiled and nodded. Susanna led her to a desk at the front of the office where Katherine could answer calls but also receive anyone who walked in to get help in person. Putting on her coat, Susanna said, I will be gone for a few hours for my meeting. Good luck. Bye, said Katherine. Her confidence waned as she watched Susanna leave. She walked back to where Regina was to check on her. Regina worked on her homework and hummed a tune that Katherine couldnt quite recognize. She waved to her daughter who returned a smile. They both returned to their tasks. Katherine kept herself occupied by straightening up the desk she was sitting at and continuing her reading of Left to Tell. She received two phone calls in the first hour. One woman didnt have enough money for groceries and hoped that the center was also a food bank. Katherine apologized, but knew the number of the food bank, having volunteered there before. The second caller, a man, wanted to order a pizza. Katherine told him he had the wrong number and laughed to herself, because that had happened before. The centers number must be close to a pizza places, she thought. A little into her second hour there, Katherine returned to her desk after checking on Regina. Moments later, as she reopened her book, she heard the ring of the bell on the front door. She looked up to see a girl in her young twenties who was visibly pregnant walk in. She had a pretty face whose beauty was strained by grief and worry.

Hi, my name is Katherine. Welcome. How can I help you? The girl looked at the smile on Katherines face and returned her own nervous version. Hi, Im Maggie, Maggie Rowe. I need to talk to someone. Katherine stood up and began to escort Maggie to a small room next to her greeting station. Come in here and make yourself comfortable. I need to take care of something real quick and then I will be right with you. Maggie went into the little room that had two comfortable leather chairs and a couch and took off her coat. Katherine went to Reginas room and said, I am talking to someone in meeting room in the front. I may be with her for a while so stay put and come get me only in an emergency. Okay, sweetie? Okay, mommy. Regina, this may be a chance for you to do something. Pray hard. Katherine had a strange feeling that Maggie needed some extra help. Regina, who was feeling a little bored at this point, perked up. Oh, okay. Thanks, mommy. Katherine smiled and returned to Maggie who tried to make herself comfortable despite her large belly. Katherine remembered her struggles with her pregnancies. She knew some women who loved being pregnant and envied them. She had really struggled carrying Emmanuel. Her body had suffered a lot. If not for the dangers posed to her own life she would have loved having more children. She could see Maggie had more than just health concerns on her mind. How can I help you? asked Katherine. Maggie hesitated but Katherines warm smile disarmed her and tears began to pour down her face. I dont know where to begin.

Take your time, you can tell me only what you want to. Katherine got up and got Maggie a box of tissues. I didnt know where to go. My boyfriend left me and my mom moved to Florida to take care of my grandma. The words flowed like her tears and ended with her sobbing. The chairs were close enough for Katherine to reach over and put her hand on Maggies knee. Why dont you take a minute and tell me your story from the beginning? Maggie wiped her eyes and blew her nose. She composed herself and then began. I met my boyfriend a couple of years ago. I lived with my mother and she didnt like him. He was headstrong and proud. She said he told me what to do too much. Its funny because I could say the same about her. Anyway, I was taking nursing classes at the community college and working as a waitress at Rickys, the steak house at the mall. Oh yeah, Ive been there, Katherine acknowledged. Its good, right? So after enough fights about him with my mom, I moved in with him. I knew I shouldnt have. I grew up in the Church and I knew it wasnt right but I excused myself because of the fighting. I learned that from my mom. My parents, me and my brother would go to church every Sunday, but when I was in high school my father and brother were killed in an accident. Not too long after that, my mother excused us from going to church. She said that God didnt care about her. She never let go of the hurt. What about you? asked Katherine. I dont know what I thought. I counted myself lucky because my mom and I were supposed to be in that car too, but I had a fever so we stayed home. Maggie paused for a moment deep in thought. Katherine let her have a second, but then prompted, So you moved in with your boyfriend?

Oh, yeah. Things were great. He has a good job and he took care of me real well. We talked about getting married. Last year, my mom moved to Florida because my grandma got sick. The last thing she said to me is Im going to live by grandma, because I guess YOU dont need me anymore. She doesnt even know that Im pregnant. This brought more tears from Maggie. Katherine waited patiently for Maggie to continue. She did. I was so scared when I found out I was pregnant, because everything was going so well. When I told my boyfriend, Paul, he was not happy. He told me I should get an abortion. I think it was the first time I told him no. He was shocked, but I knew it was wrong. He tried to convince me, but something deep inside me kept me strong in my conviction. He said fine, we would work it out. What happened then? Little by little he started to change. He would get bursts of anger and a crazed look would come over his face when we argued. I thank God that he never hit me, but he looked like he wanted to, and then recently he has gotten worse. How so? He asked me to terminate again. What? Now? Katherine knew that late-term abortions where legal and performed in their state, but she couldnt understand how anyone could get desperate enough to go through with one. Yes. He said that this baby would ruin us. He said he didnt want to be tied down by an intruder. He called our baby an intruder. I came here because I dont know what to do. I dont think Paul would ever hurt me but I dont know what he might do to my baby. Maggie lost her composure and Katherine tried to console her.

In the break room, Regina prayed a Rosary with fervor. She had just started the Second Joyful Mystery, The Visitation, when she heard Juliannes voice. Regina, go to see your mother. She needs you. But she told me not to come unless it was an emergency, explained Julianne. This is an emergency. Regina had no reason to doubt Julianne but she wanted to honor her mothers wishes. Are you sure? I wouldnt ask you to interrupt your mother unless the Lord sent me himself. This marked the first time that Jesus, himself, had gotten directly involved in her visions. Regina got up and started to walk down the hall. As she left her room she felt a voice stopping her. Your mother said to stay where you are. You shouldnt bother her. Honor your father and mother. Regina shook her head. Her doubt stalled her and she wondered what had just happened. Julianne had convinced her that she should go, but now it seemed her conscience was holding her up. She took a few more steps. You dont want to disobey your mother. Go back to the break room and do what you are supposed to be doing. She was supposed to be praying! Her mother asked to pray, how could that be wrong? Lord Jesus, help me! Regina cried out, choosing a quick prayer. She felt a darkness being lifted, allowing her to take a deep breath. It was your tempter, he is cunning, said Julianne. Without prayer, he can divert you from your mission in clever ways. Hell make you think you are doing the right thing. I have to fight hard just to get in to talk to you. The devil does not want you to go see your mother right now, so lets go.

Regina hurried down the hall to hear the steady crying coming from the room where she figured her mother would be. She poked her head around the wall to see the two women sitting next to each other in their chairs. Katherine Andrews spotted her and said, Regina! in a scolding voice. Regina, expecting her mothers tone, said sheepishly, Hi, mommy. Maggie jumped to attention at the sound of Reginas voice. She grabbed her large belly and a strange look came over her face. Please, come here, she said motioning to Regina. Katherine and Regina were both amazed. Maggie turned to Katherine and said, Is this your daughter? Yes, replied Katherine. Please, Regina, beckoned Maggie, May I hug you? Regina walked towards Maggie who awkwardly got out of her chair and held her arms out. Regina looked at her mother, who gave her a look like it was okay. Regina embraced Maggie for several moments. When they released, Maggie had a huge smile on her face, leaving both Katherine and Regina perplexed. Tears of joy replaced her tears of sorrow. They both awaited an explanation. Maggie laughed and settled herself back into her chair. She was clearly a little giddy. I cant truly explain it, even though it just happened. I was completely lost and I had no idea where I was going. When Regina spoke , Maggie laughed again and hugged her unborn child tightly. My little girl jumped up and wanted to be with her. I felt my baby call me to hug Regina. Katherine and Regina looked to each other in wonder. After having seen the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth she knew that this kind of thing had happened before. Her life was become full of mysteries itself.

Maggie continued, I know it must have seemed weird to you Regina, but it seemed perfectly natural to me. Then what happened? Regina asked. When we touched, you healed me by the Holy Spirit. Really? How? Thats just it. I dont have any idea how. I just know for sure that God has touched you in a special way and now He has changed me. He took away my fear and told me that everything was going to be alright. I dont know what will happen for sure but I trust that God will provide. All I want to do is sing. Is that crazy? Regina thought of the Canticles of Mary and Zechariah and said, No, thats not crazy at all.

Chapter 16 The Homily Later that night, family dinner was abuzz with the relating of the story. Regina raced through trying to get to the end but Katherine reined her in, making sure to supply enough details for it to make sense. Mark Andrews was pretty impressed. So what happened after that? Katherine explained, I didnt know what to say for the longest time, but when Regina and Maggie were done sharing their parts of the story, we talked about what practical things Maggie could do. Oh? Like what? asked Mark Andrews, in a way that Regina found strange. It seemed like her father knew something that he wasnt sharing. Well, first I had her sign up for Crisis Support, so donors can get some care packages of baby stuff ready for her when she delivers. I gave her the number of our financial counselor who can help her figure out things in case her boyfriend doesnt come back. And? her father asked in the same way. Katherine gave in. And, I invited her over for dinner tomorrow night. Mark Andrews smiled. Regina thought he had the same look on his face when he would win a board game. Stop it, said Katherine, smiling as well. You knew, Regina told you. No she didnt, but I know you. He chuckled and said, Cant wait to meet your new friend. Daddy? Can I call Father Joe and ask him to meet me before Religious Ed, so I can tell him about everything that happened this week? asked Regina.

Sure, G. Im sure he would like that. After dinner, Mark called Fr. Joe and gave him a brief run down on some of the amazing things that had happened since they had last seen him at family dinner. Regina listened as her father set up an appointment for the next morning and couldnt help but notice a different strange look on her fathers expressive face. When he ended the call, she asked, Daddy, whats the matter? Father Joe sounded a little off. He wasnt his usual upbeat self, but he did agree to see you tomorrow at 7:45 before RE, answered Mark. Regina was happy about the opportunity to meet with the priest but sad that he didnt sound happy himself. She wanted to know what the problem was. The rest of the evening passed without incident. The family spent a little time in prayer, the kids watched a show while their parents cleaned up. Bed time came with the promise of a new day. Before Regina could drift into sleep Julianne spoke to her while she prayed her evening Angelus. Regina, you must pray for Fr. Joe. I know. Daddy said he didnt sound well when they talked on the phone. Is he ill? Sort of. You remember having the flu last year, which turned into pneumonia? Yeah, that was not fun. Regina remembered not being able to do anything except lay around for weeks. Well, you know what it means to be physically ill. When someone is out of their mind they are called mentally ill. Okay, Regina understood. Fr. Joe has a type of spiritual illness, which is something that the world chooses to ignore. There are many types of this. Some which you

bring on yourself and others which are brought to you. For him, his spirit is being torn between two different paths. What do you mean? Regina lost Juliannes path. Lets just say that he feels that he is being pulled apart, Regina. You know about your tempter, but there are demons called tormentors that the devil can assign to people to attack them in stronger ways. Pray for him that he may undergo the test and prevail. Regina felt fearful for Fr. Joe at first, but then her thoughts turned to herself. These tormentors will come after me too, wont they? She knew the answer already. Julianne did not respond. Stay with me. Of course. Julianne prayed with Regina until she was asleep. Father Joes spirit was in her thoughts as she drifter away. Father Joes Saturday did not pass as smoothly. He had received a call from the bishop early in the day reminding him that he was to maintain normal behavior around the church. Tormentors kept reminding Fr. Joe of the bishops words to keep him distracted from his mission, but in his heart he could not forget what God was calling him to. He decided to take a walk in the local forest preserve to try to clear his head. He remembered part of the first conversation he had with Regina about her visions. She described the visualization her angel had given her for spiritual battle. My guardian angel told me to think about some kind of battle. What do you mean? I saw a vision where I fought of some training dummies, but I had to pray for my weapons to work. I said Our Fathers and Hail Marys and I used a huge sword to cut the dummies apart.

Father Joe was amazed how such a young child could have an acute appreciation for spiritual warfare. He knew his spirit was being attacked now and decided to ask his guardian angel to help him battle his demons like Regina did in practice. Thomas, youve always been there for me and Ive neglected you. Please join with me now, be my right hand, and help me fight in this war. God answered his prayer and gave Fr. Joe the grace to sense his angel more clearly than he ever had before. He couldnt see his angel like Regina did but he had no doubt of his presence. Fr. Joe took out his Rosary. He thought of St. Louis de Montforts preaching of the Rosary as a weapon. He had long used it as a daily spiritual practice, but realized that he now needed more. In the name of the Father Fr. Joe crossed himself with the cruciform and kissed the body of Our Lord before starting the first Our Father. What happened next Fr. Joe knew he would never be able to explain. The path which he was walking down changed in his eyes. What had been a defoliated forest covered in a small blanket of snow transformed to a scarred battlefield. Fighting raged all around him in the distance. He could hear the clashing of swords, the explosions of bomb, and the tormented screams of people. This new landscape confused and frightened him. He did not know what to make of the change in perception. My son, behold the spiritual state of the world. Fr. Joe turned to see the speaker of the voice and beheld a beautiful woman about his age dressed in ancient clothes and radiating a distinct glow. It only took a moment to recognize her and a moment more to shake off his shock. He fell to his knees before the apparition and said, Mother. Tears of joy of this gift and sorrow for his sins poured from his body as Mary showered her priest with graces from her Son.

Rise, my son. Father Joe rose to his feet and wiped his face with his hands, but could not make himself look up. Look at me. He returned his gaze upon the image and his heart melted with love. The Lord has given you a mission and you have accepted it. The Enemy will not let you progress easily. You see around you the state of mankind. Tempters constantly lead their subjects to sin, tormentors torturing both the holy and sinful with physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse, and then the unholy soldiers She didnt finish her last statement. You must prepare your flock first. You must explain to them the real dangers of this world. Many risk the loss of their souls and they have been given no chance to fight back. Mother, I know, but you know I have taken a vow of obedience. What of my superiors order not to preach of such challenging subject matter? I will work on the bishop. He has been given a very powerful tempter, one that has confused him about what his role as a shepherd should be. Pray for him. He is a good man. He can still repent and do much good work. Father Joe realized that his moment had arrived. He looked at the woman who had accepted a much greater call than his many years ago and drew strength from her. He knelt and prayed, Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among woman, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. He looked up and she was gone. On the snow where she was standing was a single, red, rose. He picked it up. It was warm. He prayed many Rosaries that day. His mind and spirit came together as one. He envisioned the spiritual attack upon him as a war in his mind. He could see that he had more than one tempter and several tormentors as well. The tempters kept trying to dissuade him from

speaking the truth to his people and the tormentors barraged his mind with a range of dreadful thoughts and feelings. They forced upon him many emotions, like anger, jealousy, and lust, all leading him away from the love of God. Still he battled on. Luckily, I dont have 5 oclock Mass, he thought to himself. He didnt see how he would be able to make it through. His battle raged on through dinner time into the evening. He was deep in prayer when the phone rang. Hello? Who is calling me at this hour? The anger in his own thoughts startled him. He looked at the caller ID. Its the girls father, the one who started all of this trouble, if only she hadnt had these visions, life would be so much simpler for me. Great! She had another vision. Dont meet with her. Have her meet me in the morning at 7:45 at the school, he said tersely. If he had not written down an appointment with Regina Marie Andrews, he would have surely forgotten. His demons continued to attack him, but some hidden strength in him had made the appointment. For some time, his head pounded with doubt and frustration with his mission. Minutes passed into an hour. He paced around his office, trying to clear his head. Finally, he happened to look down at her name written on the paper. Regina Marie. Queen Mary! he realized. The name broke through the deception his tempters were working on him. The battle had ended for the time being and his mind was freed. He got ready for bed, able to think clearly and thank God for the gift of Our Lady and the little girl who was praying for him as she fell asleep. The next morning Father Joe woke up excited to meet Regina to hear about her latest visions. He walked briskly to the school building where the Sunday morning religious education classes were held. As he

walked in, he was not surprised to see Mark Andrews and Regina waiting for him. Regina, Mark, good morning, greeted Father Joe. The troubles of the day before seemed to have left him. Good morning, Father. Are you joining us, Mark? No, I will get my room set up for class. Regina has a lot to tell you. Lets just sit right here. No one will disturb us for a while. Father Joe pointed to a wooded pew that had been converted into a waiting station for kids or parents outside the office. Regina and Father Joe sat down and Regina began. She told him how she had seen Zachariah lose his voice, Marys visit to Elizabeth, and the birth of John the Baptist. She also explained her own visit to see Frank Roland and what had happened there. Father Joe patiently listened while she spoke. When she was done, he folded his hands and thought quietly for several minutes. Regina, I think I have an idea of what St. Gabriel is showing you. I may even have a guess at why. Really? What? I think that he is showing you the Joyful Mysteries, one at a time. First, you saw the first Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation. Now you have seen the second Joyful Mystery, the Visitation. If my guess is correct, you will see the Nativity next. With Christmas approaching, it only makes sense. Regina followed Father Joes logic. She felt childish for not seeing it herself. Your parents and I both thought it might be the case after the Annunciation but I asked them not to say anything until you had one more vision to see for sure.

You said that you might also know why I am seeing these particular visions? she asked. Its just an educated guess, really. The Mysteries of the Rosary tell the story of Jesus and the early church. They provide a way for people not only to pray simply, but also to meditate deeply on how God entered our world and was one with us. Many people need to hear that story, so it is being made alive through you. Now what? I dont know, Father Joe confessed. Pray and wait? Regina wasnt exactly satisfied with that answer but she nodded her head and accepted it. They each went their separate ways. Regina went to her classroom and got ready for class and Father Joe went back to the rectory to prepare for Mass. Regina was in a pleasant state of mind, but Father Joe was attacked again. On his short walk back to the rectory, it began. Reginas latest visions and experiences emboldened him to follow the Spirit and tell the people something more than what he had planned for his sermon this weekend. This prompted his demons to move. You are a good priest. You have always followed the orders of your superiors. Your parishioners love you the way that you are. They are happy with you. He felt the love and respect of his flock and the comforts of a content parish. His tempter was skilled. Still, the Holy Spirit continued to call him to his mission. Regina was in his parish. She was under his care. She accepted her call, and he could see the amazing results that choice already was having in his people. Regina, her father, and her mother were being transformed before his eyes. The conversion of Frank Roland and Maggie Rowe astonished him. What about me? The tormentors plunged him into thoughts of doubt and led him on the path to despair. He turned to prayer and paced the rooms of the

rectory needing to clear his head before church. He knew he wouldnt be able to do anything until Mass began anyway. In the end, the demons won this battle because his tempter had deluded him into a particularly dangerous sin, procrastination. You should just wait and see what happens with Reginas next vision. It will lead you in the right direction. The demons logic sounded so good that he believed he had found his own solution and was smart for doing so. He went to the church holding the bishop friendly homily he had prepared. Father Joe liked to get to church ten minutes early to greet as many people as he could. He shook hands and felt great since he believed that he had resolved his issues on his own. His tempter smiled. Mark Andrews brought Regina and Emmanuel up from the school. They would meet Katherine at their usual pew. When Regina smiled at Father Joe, his false calm cracked for a moment, and his heart felt an ache for something, but the feeling quickly passed. As he continued to greet more parishioners, his tempter played at his pride. You see? They like you the way that you are. You are doing a great job already. The reinforcement worked until the plan of the Holy Spirit took shape. A bottle neck had formed in the vestibule due to the greeting line and there was a significant crowd. Suddenly, someone gasped. Whispers spread around and the gathering parted allowing a mother and child to pass through. It was Frank Roland and his mother. Father Joe stared at the boy, unable to speak. He had heard the boys remarkable confession just days before. Frank had several casts for broken bones and was wrapped basically like a mummy for cuts and scrapes. He walked unassisted by his beaming mother with a smile on his face. Hi, Father! Frank said. How are you? Frank seemed to enjoy the irony of the question. I How? was all Father Joe could manage.

Its a miracle, his mom blurted. She embraced the priest and her tears of joy left his vestments dampened. The people around them were as stunned as Father Joe. The doctor said the same. After you heard his confession and left, Frank said he felt really warm, but he didnt have a fever. A little later he said nothing hurt on him anymore and he wanted to go home. The doctor came and started to check him out. He seemed befuddled but took Frank down to x-ray to see that nothing was wrong with him anymore. The priest looked at Frank, who wore a huge grin. Moved, Father Joe said, That is a miracle. From her pew, Regina wondered what the commotion in the vestibule was until she saw Father Joe step out of the way. Her eyes went wide open when she saw Frank Roland walk in. Her mind flashed back a couple of days to the broken boy who lied in a hospital bed. She turned to her mom who returned her astonished look. Father Joe signaled the music director and the choir began to play. He waited to enter the church, trying to digest what had just happened. You see? The power of God is being displayed all around you. You must tell the people. His tempter, unable to enter the sanctuary of the church, had left his mental wounds which still ensnared his mind. The people are comfortable. You are comfortable. They like you just like you are. Why change things that are good? He walked up the aisle and saw many people smiling as they were singing. Some adults nodded their heads to him while children waved. He felt their friendliness. Mass continued and no one noticed that their priest was drifting through barely present. His mind remained in a fog until the Gospel reading which was about the Visitation of Mary. As he read the words of the Magnificat, the chains of his tempters words were released and the Holy Spirit flowed through him.

He read My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. At these words his spirit was completely freed. Saturdays torment was forgotten, he was ready. He finished the Gospel reading and took out his notes for the plain homily he had written. Father Joe paused for a moment and looked over the congregation. While some people were smiling and attentive, he could see that several were not paying attention. Some were reading the bulletin, having muffled conversations, and others were even sneaking looks at their cell phones. He turned to look at the crucifix and imagined Jesus preaching to the multitudes. This strengthened him. He braced himself to speak. Brothers and sisters, we are at war! The strength and force of his voice stunned the congregation to attention. He continued. We are at war, and we are losing the battle. The Lord has entrusted me to lead you in this war and I confess to you that I have failed at my duty, but not anymore! People started looking at each other. The wondered if this was a joke. The greatest trick that the devil ever played is convincing the world that he didnt exist, but I tell you that the Enemy is real, and his army is out every day trying to lead us from God. Demons from hell swarm around you attacking your conscience and leading you to sin. Regina sat in wonder as the Holy Spirit consumed Father Joe. His words ceased to be his own. He had opened himself to the heavenly will and he could not turn back. She looked around at people who shifted in their pews uncomfortably. But we are not alone! Oh no. Not by a long shot. Our army is righteous, stronger, and we know that we will win in the end. We have the Lord Jesus Christ on our side and if God is for us, who can be against? Regina listened intently as Father Joe spoke about the triumph of Jesus over sin and death, the institution of the Church and the Sacraments. The congregation was enthralled. No one could take their

eyes off of the emboldened priest. Regina marveled at his discourse on the Eucharist and his desperate plea for a return to Reconciliation. The audience nodded along at Fathers every word. No one noticed how much time had passed. At the cross He entrusted His Immaculate Mother to us, to be our guide just as she was for Him as a young man. You can turn to her and her love and prayers will be a shield against the stoutest of demons. Father Joe spoke of the Rosary as a weapon and described the battle that lay before the people. Angels and demons, heaven and hell, every word from his mouth was as mesmerizing as the last. Regina could see tears running down from peoples faces. Not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy and love. And by the grace of Almighty God, amazing things are happening in this parish. Regina thought Father might be speaking of her, but she could see he was staring at a beaming Frank Roland sitting near the front of the church. She felt sure that her secret was still safe. When I heard this young mans confession only a few short days ago, his body was a broken heap. Without being asked, Frank stood up and waved to everyone. He couldnt stop smiling while his mother sobbed in gratitude. Suddenly everyone in the congregation felt an electric chill as the Holy Spirit flashed through the church as hundreds of people inhaled at once. Regina felt as though she was being held in the hand of God together with all of the parishioners of St. Johns. This emotion shook Father Joe as well. He seemed freed from the fiery passion that he had spoken with. He shook his head and snuck a quick glance at his watch. 10:50? I have preaching for over 30 minutes! He looked out at the congregation and saw that everyone was eagerly awaiting his next word. He didnt know what else to say. Then it began. Sensing that Father had finished what he had to say one man began clapping. Others joined in, and shortly there was quite a

clamor. Father Joe was deeply moved. After the applause died down, he prayed for guidance and felt his guardian guide him to say, I will hear Confessions after Mass, who would like to come? Immediately dozens of hands shot into the air, soon hundreds. The sea of arms told Father Joe that he had followed the right path. The enemy did not want this mass return of sheep to the shepherd, but it was only the beginning. I will give a General Absolution and we will say of an Act of Contrition together but you will need to confess your sins to me after Mass. Please be patient. The rest of Mass was extremely powerful as men, women, and children who rarely participated exuberantly prayed and sang like they never had before. Father recited the rite with a new found focus and the raising of the host you could have heard a pin drop. When it time to line up for receiving Communion, a tiny fraction of the congregation came forward. Father had challenged his flock during his homily with the fact that lines for Communion are 100 times longer than lines for Confession. If you really believed in who you were receiving it would be the other way around. It seemed his words had taken hold. After Mass, Father went to the sacristy to call Father Bob, the traveling priest who would say the noon mass, to ask him to come and hear confessions to lessen the load. He then went to the confessional and stayed there for three hours. This was after he would began each Sacrament with, Please, only your two or three most serious sins. God knows your heart and welcomes you home. Although Regina and her family had gone home hours before and he had not said anything to the young visionary or even looked in her direction during Mass, Father Joes thoughts went to her constantly during his marathon Reconciliation session. What have you started, Regina? He smiled and focused on his returning flock. Satan screamed.
