Exe, or BrainFry to some fol s, uses your computer's built-in spea er to generate audio frequency sounds. What can you use it for? --------------------------------------------------------------------------> Generate audio frequencies from 37 to 32,000 Hz. > Helps you determine your tinnitus frequency. > Helps you chec your hearing. > Tune musical instruments to a "computer pitch pipe." > Musical note recognition. > Adjust stereo equalizers. > Morse code practice. > Insect repeller. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Files included: FREQ-GEN.EXE The main program. FREQ-GEN.INI Contains default values for the program. Edit the default values to suit your needs or li ing. FREQ-GEN.OVX Data required by the program. * FREQ-GEN.MRS Morse code dit & dahs data (*) * FREQ-GEN.NTS Musical notes & frequencies data (*) * FREQ-GEN.PIF If this is how you li e to start programs in Windows 3.X, you must first use the PIF Editor to reflect your own wor ing directory path. (*) * FREQ-GEN.DOC This file (*) Note: These files are needed in the same directory. If you do not plan on using all features, you can safely delete the ones indicated with an asterix (*) --------------------------------------------------------------------------How to start the program from DOS: --------------------------------------------------------------------------type: press: what happens: --------------------------------------------------------------------------Freq-Gen.exe ENTER Starts the program. Freq-Gen.exe /w ENTER Starts program, display area at top left of screen. If used under Windows this allows easy resizing of the window or screen font size/area. Windows 95/98: Clic on START, clic on RUN and the rest is li e Windows 3.X. Scheme 4: Create an icon or Short Cut for FREQ-GEN.EXE or FREQ-GEN.PIF and double clic on it. Note: you must first edit the PIF file to reflect your own wor ing directory and/or loading

options before you can double clic on the PIF file. --------------------------------------------------------------------------How to start the program from OS/2: --------------------------------------------------------------------------Scheme 1: start a DOS session, full or windowed screen, and follow the 'start from DOS' directions. Scheme 2: Find FREQ-GEN.EXE and double clic on it. Scheme 3: Create an icon for FREQ-GEN.EXE and double clic on it. PLEASE NOTE: You cannot run multiple sessions of this program! --------------------------------------------------------------------------The program lets you frea out in the range of 37 to 32,000 Hz., by using the spea er inside your computer. Keep in mind, these built-in spea ers are pretty chincey and probably only wor from about 100 to 8,000 Hz. To get better sound quality route the sound through Sound Blaster card and stereo spea ers or headphones. Chec the details on how to further on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------MAIN MENU FREQUENCY GENERATOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------Silence : is golden, toggles the spea er on/off Frequency : enter a frequency (in Herz), 7,000 is the default. Up/down arrows : raise/lower frequency in 10 Hz. steps Right/Left ,, : raise/lower frequency in 1 Hz. steps + and - eys : sound sweeps up/down without holding down the eys, press any ey to interrupt F1 : customize the frequency stepping rate (ma e it step in threes etc. The low rate is from 1 to 50, the high rate has to be higher than the low rate and maxes out at 500 Hz. F2 : customize the frequency range (i.e. 7,500 to 8,300) Quit : stop this crazy thing Use the frequency generator frea out from 37 to 32,000 Hz. Use your imagination what all you can do with it. Here's a couple of ideas: Dr. Murray Grossan recommends to listen to your tinnitus frequency on his home page (http://www.ent-consult.com). His idea is to turn the spea er volume to lower than the tone(s) inside your head. If your brain eeps hearing it from outside of you, it [your brain] figures there's no longer a need to eep producing it for you. You can tape your tone and play it on a wal man while away from your computer. For more details be sure to chec out his home page. Some mail order companies sell little gizmos claiming their high frequency gadgets drive away, or repel, insects. This program can produce similar high frequencies. I don't have any pets myself, so if Fido all of a sudden goes sna y, turn it off pdq by hitting the Silence ey. The little spea er mounted inside your computer simply cannot reproduce sounds in this range. You need to route the spea er through your Sound Blaster and stereo. Try it at 25,000-32,000 Hz. Use piezo tweeters, they're pretty cheap and almost indestructable. To set up stereo equalizers: use a sound level meter and adjust the volume on the stereo to a level the meter can read. For each of the level controls on your equalizer enter the corresponding frequency in the Frequency Generator option of the program. Adjust each slide control (and it's frequency) so the meter shows the same volume. You now you have a flat frequency response from your spea ers. Of course, you need to run the sound through the stereo for this.

HEARING TEST ------------------------------------------------------------------------>>>>>>>> First, an important warning <<<<<<<<< ---------------------------------------------Proper hearing tests are performed by highly trained and s illed audiologists in sound proof rooms, with super sensitive and specialized equipment. This program CANNOT hope, or pretend to even come close to duplicating this ind of environment. Results produced by this program are only an indication at best. Having said that, if you suspect you might have trouble hearing certain sounds, give it a whirl. Again, eeping in mind the results CANNOT be relied on to be accurate. Use a decent set of headphones that cover the ears totally to shield out as much noise in the room as possible. Also, you need to turn the volume down to a point you can barely hear it. Use a young person as a guinea pig to compare your results with younger ears. They can hear what you couldn't...? The program presents you with randomly selected audio tones. Each time you hear a tone, press the space bar. You can customize the tones to be a pulsed or constant sound, tone duration in the FREQ-GEN.INI file. The number at the bottom right of the screen shows how many tones are left for testing. You can view, print or save the results at the end of the test. Once more, the results are merely a hint of a possible clue at best. If you 'flun ' your test here, you might pass it with flying colours at the audio lab. Then again, a clue is a clue is a clue. If people have been bugging you to go to have your ears chec ed, this might convince you. The built-in spea er in your computer is probably too loud for this test. See the special note further on to hoo up the sound through a Sound Blaster. TINNITUS FREQUENCY MATCHER ------------------------------------------------------------------------UP ARROW "yo, my frequency is higher" DOWN ARROW "d'oh, my frequency is lower" LEFT ARROW decrease the low limit by 100 Hz. CTRL+LEFT ARROW decrease the low limit by 1,000 Hz. RIGHT ARROW increase the high limit by 100 Hz. CTRL+RIGHT ARROW increase the high limit by 1,000 Hz. R repeats the last tone Again, for best results re-route the spea er through your Sound Blaster card and use a good quality set of head phones (see how to get better sound further down). The headphones shield out noises around you and help you focus on the frequency you want to zero in on. Use the UP and DOWN arrow eys to tell the program your frequency is higher or lower thean the one you hear. It wor s li e this: the program lets you listen to the "middle" of the high and low default frequencies. If you tell it your frequency is higher, the "middle" frequency becomes the new low frequency. It eeps on doing this until you arrive at your own frequency, inda li e the "guess my number" game. If you're not sure about the way things are going, you can adjust the high and low frequencies up or down 100 or 1,000 Hz. while the test is in progress. Just li e in the hearing test, you can customize the tone in the INI file. If you don't hear a sound but the screen tells you the sound is active: this sound is just too high for you to hear, hit the down arrow. Using the built-in spea er? See the special note further on.

EAR TRAINING ------------------------------------------------------------------------Pure bun , and incredible non-sense. But wouldn't it be nice eh...? I should probably ta e this portion out of the program. But hey, it was pretty easy to ma e. Once I got going it was too cute to erase. If you can build your muscles by doing all inds of weird excersizes on outrageously expensive contraptions, couldn't you excersize your ears the same way? The program produces random high frequency sounds. Adjust the values in the INI file to a range ABOVE what you can hear. The timer is set for a maximum "enjoyment" of 15 minutes. Actually, a hearing professional told me it is b.s. for sure. Conclea, little hair li e thingmies inside your ear, ma e the sound go to your brain and are nothing li e muscles. Don't tell my wife about them though, she'll ma e me shave... MORSE CODE ------------------------------------------------------------------------Morse code has no place in modern age technology, but history buffs can beep away to their heart's content. Beep your own letters, or import an ASCII text file and have the program "sound it out." Oh, please, no flaming email about my feelings on CW - digital transmissions, satellite dishes etc.... In the INI file you can set the speed to approximately 5, 10 or 15 words per minute. The 'import text file' option loo s for *.TXT files in the current directory. Write (edit) one yourself, the file size limit is 32,000 bytes, and save it in regular ASCII format. All text is automaticaly converted to upper case. ------------------------------------------------------------------------How to improve the sound: Use a sound card. Original Sound Blaster cards have a seldom used feature: a spea er connection. If opening your computer worries or scares you, s ip the following instructions and have a technician figure it out for you. The procedure might sound pretty scary, but it is not at all hard to do: >>>>>>>>>> FIRST SWITCH OFF THE POWER TO YOUR COMPUTER <<<<<<<<<<<<< Next, disconnect the blac and red wire leading to the computer's built-in spea er and connect them to the pins mar ed PC spea er on the Sound Blaster card. The red wire usually goes to pin 1, the lac to pin 2. Sounds to scary? Pleazzze, pay a technician to do it for you, bar-b-qued computers are expensive to fix! Connect the line-out on the bac of the SB card and plug it into AUX IN, or whatever (except phono) input on the bac of your stereo. Switch on your stereo, switch on your computer and whoa doggies! The memory test pfrrrr and boot-up beep just came at you in glorious hi-fi! Guess what, you now even have a volume control and left and right balance. Instead of patching the leads to your stereo you can also plug in a set headphones in the bac of the Sound Blaster card. I tried this scheme on a SB Pro and a SB Pro 16, both wor ed li e a charm. Sorry, I have no info on any other sound cards. --------------------------------------------------------------------------SPECIAL NOTE FOR HEARING TEST AND TINNITUS MATCH: You might not hear all frequencies through the built-in spea er. This can easily happen and does not necessarily mean a hearing problem. The higher the frequency, the clearer the path between the spea er to your ears needs to be. The computer case, or something inside of it, might prevent the sound from reaching your ears properly. Try moving, or turning, your head a little and you might

hear the sound after all. Avoid this problem by re-routing the spea er through a Sound Blaster card and use headphones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------THE FINE PRINT: Whatever anybody, including me, told you about the program - not true! If you believe it anyway - your problem, not mine. If anything in the universe changes because you installed, or loaded this program on your computer: your problem, not mine. If you li e the program anyway, pass it along. Maybe someone else might enjoy it.
