Brumley was born on a cotton farm near Spiro, Oklahoma on October 29, 1905 (two years before Oklahoma received statehood) into a tenant farm family. He spent much of his early life chopping and picking cotton on his family's farm. He began writing songs in the late 1920s when he enrolled in the Hartford Musical Institute of Hartford, Arkansas, and studied there through 1931. He later worked as a member of the Hartford Quartet and as an instructor in the school. Brumley wrote over 800 gospel and sentimental songs. You may recognize some of the songs he wrote: I'll Fly Away, Victory in Jesus, Turn Your Radio On and Jesus, Hold My Hand. His songs emulate country settings, ordinary country religion, simplicity and values--simplicity and naturalness was his music motto and philosophy. Brumley's great gift was the ability to touch the heart of his audience through the powerful lyrics and easy-flowing melodies of his songs. A wide range of artists continue to record his compositions and many remain just as popular today as when they were written decades ago. Albert Brumley was a member of the Church of Christ and is buried at Fox Church of Christ Cemetery near Powell, Missouri. He died November 15, 1977.

Paul said HE has made me free - That is, has delivered me from the influence and control of sin. The design of the gospel was to produce this freedom. Following the Law could not give us freedom. In his former state (under the law), Paul was under a bitter and galling bondage [Romans 7:7-11]. Now, he was brought under the influence of a plan which contemplated freedom, and which produced it. Romans 6:22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
