Jacqueline Huynh September 12, 2012 Course Mapping and Annotation I.

The following course mapping is intended to culminate all of the courses I have completed. In addition, I have correlated them to the three main themes that the Communication Studies Department develops its courses under. Those themes are as follows: Theory (Foundations), Inquiry, and Practice. II. Foundation (Theory) Area - Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of theories, and conceptual frameworks for understanding communication and an appreciation of the significance of ethics and social responsibility as they engage in communication. 1. Theories of Communication: Demonstrate understanding of the major theories that have shaped the field of communication, including historical developments and current trends. A. COMM101C Intro to Comm Studies I took this class in the fall exactly two years ago. It proved very different from what I had thought Communications Studies was all about. There were theories on constructivist ideas and ones agency. Terms I had never heard of. Most definitely, what I did get very stuck in my head was the Sender-Receiver model, which has popped up in many of the classes, not only Comm Studies that I have taken. B. COMM181F Internet Communication I took this course in Edinburgh, Scotland with one of the most intellectual professors I have ever had the pleasure to come across. We studied news values, and many of the works of Daniel Bell and Manuel Castells. Not only did this course have multitudes of theory but we had to put the theories we learned into practice by holding a classroom debate for and against Internet Regulation. 2. Ethics: Demonstrate understanding of ethical and social responsibilities in communicating with others in interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, mediated, and public contexts. A. COMM 174 Intercultural Communication Out of the many electives I chose to fulfill the program I thought that this would be one of my favorites. To my dismay, I didnt fully enjoy how the lectures were put together and did not find the course assignments meaningful at all. I did have a large group project, which allowed me to interact with many Marketing majors, and boy was I glad to be a Communication Studies Major.

III. Inquiry Area - Students will be able to demonstrate competency in methods of communication inquiry. 1. Research Methods: Demonstrate an understanding of methods of communication research and analysis such as rhetorical, critical, interpretative, performative and social scientific approaches. A. COMM100W Writing Workshop By far, a course that exceled above and beyond all others. It was lead by a part-time professor Nita George and her teaching method to writing was absolutely phenomenal. We had the privilege to write a research project on just about any topic we liked. We were introduced to literature reviews, library research, and interpreting the information we received into a lit review or manual B. COMM131P New Media/You Media This was also another one of the modules I took abroad at Edinburgh Napier. The ways to target and audience and perform research in regards to visual symbols that connect to an audience deemed to be more work the I had anticipated. It proved extremely valuable in the end due to the web banner, poster, and flyer that I had produced with skills that I had learned in just one semester. 2. Research Critique: Develop and apply analytical skills for understanding, conducting, and evaluating communication research studies. A. COMM 169I The Media: Response and Criticism Audiences and Reception was the course titles description when I took this class on my exchange. We did much inquiry on why audiences and the media respond in the manner that they do. What is in a text? was a predominant theme throughout the course. B. COMM 164F Communication and Global Organizations Rachel Dungar taught this course at Edinburgh Napier University. Hailing from Switzerland, she alone is a respectable journalist with a great teaching method. We studied about journalism and communication amongst every regional category. Near the end of the course we had to discuss one of the regions and evaluate and side with the protagonist or antagonist view, in my case I did a presentation on Hugo Chavez. IV. Practice Area - Students will be able to demonstrate application of conceptual foundations and research methods in practical contexts.

Jacqueline Huynh September 12, 2012 1. Communication Competence: Demonstrate the ability to communicate competently in a variety of contexts, such as interpersonal, small group, organizational, intercultural, mediated, and public communication. A. COMM 120P Persuasion and Presentation I took this class in the spring of 2011 with Jennifer Morrison. We were to be split up in groups and offered 3 presentations. The first was an elevator pitch; the second a marketing of a product or service and the last and concluding one was a persuasive presentation on and controversial topic. Not only did we have to work on our own personal presentation but we always worked in groups strengthening our very own small group communicative skills. 2. Social Responsibility: Demonstrate social responsibility and community engagement as obligations of democratic citizens. A. COMM 198 Applied Activity In progress. I am currently a Comm Center Coach helping students and giving feedback on their Comm 80 module. In addition I am conducting a sustainability research project that will try and target the student audience in sustainable and local farming. B. COMM 145I Rhetorical Criticism With an emphasis on environmental rhetoric, we not only covered inquiry but also presented a project on sustainable energy within a city. We mapped it out, planned an entire theme for the city and presented it to the Comm Center. C. COMM 199C Senior Seminar In progress. Culminating my entire program and courses connecting and making an exit interview and portfolio.

V. Conclusion: This assignment showed me that I have actually taken more courses in Communication Studies than I had first thought. I have reflected on the strong points in each course and which I assignments I am proud of. This is also going to aid me in constructing my portfolio for future purposes.
