List the various properties which can be used for the measurement of temperature? A mass of m kg of liquid at a temperature T1 is mixed with an equal mass of the same liquid at temperature T2, (T1>T2) and then the system is thermally insulated. Show that the change in entropy of the universe is given by ( = 2mCP loge [(T1+T2)/2 and prove that it is necessarily positive. By drawing PV & TS diagrams derive an expression for the thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure of an Otto cycle. Determine the COP of the bell Coleman cycle by drawing PV and TS diagrams. Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of a two stroke diesel engine. Explain with a line diagram the four stages of combustion in CI engine. Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of a constant pressure cycle and its advantages.

Define state, property and process. Explain the concept of cyclic process. Differentiate between open and closed cycle. A fluid system undergoes a non-flow frictionless process following the pressure volume relation as p=(4.5/v)+2 where p is in bar and v is in m3. During the process, the volume changes from 0.12 m3 to 0.04 m3 and the system rejected 40 kJ of heat. Determine the change in internal energy and enthalpy. Give the following statements of the second law of thermodynamics: (a) Kelvin-Planck statement and (b) Clausius statement. It the second law independent of the first law. If so, prove it. By drawing PV & TS diagrams derive an expression for the thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure of diesel cycle. Determine the COP of the vapour compression refrigerating cycle by drawing TS diagrams. Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of a two stroke petrol engine. Example with a neat sketch the working principle of a simple carburetor. Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of a constant volume cycle and its advantages. *****

Explain the difference between path and point function. Define thermodynamic work and prove that it is a path function. A system turbine delivers 20 kW by receiving steam at 14 bar with u1 =2730 kJ/kg and vs1=0.166 m3/kg and V1=120 m/sec. Steam comes out of the turbine at 0.07 bar with u2=2340 kJ/kg , vs2=18.6 m3/kg V2=330 m/sec . The heat lost from the turbine is 20 kJ/kg. Neglecting the changes in potential energy. Determine the work done per kg of steam and steam flow through in kg/min. Prove that it is impossible to construct an engine operating between two reservoirs which will have higher efficiency than a reversible engine operating between the same reservoirs. By drawing PV & TS diagrams derive and expression for the thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure of dual combustion cycle. Explain the Rankine cycle with a neat sketch and its analysis. Explain with a neat sketch the working principle of a fuel injector in a diesel engine. Explain the effect of engine variables on the performance of an internal combustion engine. Compare the gas turbine with that of internal combustion engines and steam engines. *****

Differentiate between absolute and gauge pressure. Explain the working of constant volume gas thermometer. A centrifugal air compressor delivers 15 kg of air per minute. The inlet and outlet condition of air are V1=5 m/sec, p1= 1 bar, VS1=0.5 m3/kg. V2=7.5 m/sec, p2=7 bar, vs2=0.15 m3/kg. Increase in enthalpy of air passing through the compressor is 160 kJ/kg and heat loss from the compressor to the surrounding is 720 kJ/min. Find the power of the motor required to drive the compressor. Also find the ratio of inlet pipe diameter to outlet pipe diameter. Inlet and discharge are at the same level. What is thermodynamic temperature scale? How does the second law of thermodynamics lead to this scale? Starting from the second law of thermodynamics prove that the absolute zero cannot be attained. By drawing PV & TS diagram compare the Otto, diesel & dual combustion cycle for the same compression ratio & peak pressure. Explain the modified Rankine cycle and reheat cycle with a line diagram. Explain with a neat sketch the various types of lubrication systems used in IC engines. Compare the combustion phenomenon of SI & CI engines. Explain the various factors that improve the performance of gas turbine cycles. *****
