The best competition on the track for most of the second half was between Mark Webber and Alonso and between Michael Schumacher and Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, both battles between two seconds of the competing cars. Williams Pastor Maldonado was the first retirement of the race because of a gearbox problem while Sebastian Buemi, who had showed some great skill through the early half of the race, threw in the towel after his car began to pour out smoke.Vettel, who led from start to finish , is now on course to equal Schumachers 2004 record of 13-wins in one season.
