Mini Lesson 4- Earth and its Moon

Description of Classroom: Same as previous lesson Background: Students really know a lot about the planet Earth and its moon. This will be a huge review but I am hoping to still have something new for them to Learn that will be interesting. This is a 1 day lesson in the middle of a unit on The planets in the solar system Content Objective(s): Students will review characteristics of the Earth and Moon. Students will label continents and oceans and learn about the layers of the Earth. Students will describe where the moon is and its benefits to the Earth. Students Will also learn about the different phases of the moon. Language Objective(s): Whole group reading story of the moon. Earth poem, KWL chart, writing in science journals, and work packets for comprehension Nevada Standards: M.D.3 (a)- See previous lesson plan Key Vocabulary: Earth, Moon, layers, oceans, continents, phases of the moon Best Practices: (put an X next to those that you address in your lesson)

Teaching Strategies: KWL charts for the Earth and the Moon, whole group reading, 3-2-1 writing in science journals, work pacts, fun facts about the Moon Warm Up Activity: Start the KWL chart for the Moon and the Earth separately. Ask students what they already know about the moon and Earth. Read the moon book and Earth poem as a whole group. Lesson Sequence: Continue the KWL chart asking student what more they want To learn about the Earth and Moon. Read the fun facts about the Earth and Moon Have a class discussion about the facts. Students will complete the worksheets for The earth and moon. Students will write in their science journals 3-2-1 strat.

Accommodations: Same as previous lesson Supplementary Materials: KWL chart, Moon book, earth poem, fun facts about The earth and moon. Work packets for earth and moon. Science writing journals Review/Assessment: Completion of the work packets as an informal assessment for completion and accuracy, informal assessment during class discussions and Spot check science journals Reflection: This was a really easy review lesson about the earth and moon. Students enjoyed the work and poems/story. I might try to incorporate this lesson into an Earth Day lesson with a more fun activity about Earth Day.
