Control and Prevention. Public Health Action Plan to Integrate Mental Health Promotion and Mental Illness Prevention with Chronic Disease Prevention, 20112015. CDC.gov. Web. 19 Sept. 2012. The CDC creates a plan every couple of years for the various aspects of public health in the United States. This brochure is focused on mental health and states very clearly that just because a person is not mentally ill, does not mean they are mentally healthy. The idea that the public health area of government includes mental health is relatively new. The surgeon general released its first report on mental health in 2000. The CDC breaks down their plan into several sections: Surveillance, Epidemiology, Prevention Research, Communication, Education of Health Professionals, Program Integration, Policy Integration, and Systems to Promote Integration. The CDC has concluded that with more promotion of mental health there will be less mental illness, which is beneficial to the people of the United States. This source is considered to be legitimate because it is an executive agency of the United States of America. Although the plan may not be the best, it is up to the experts in the field to criticize the actions the U.S. government plans to take. The source is really used as an example. Colautti, Jennifer, et al. Perfectionism And Health: A Mediational Analysis Of The Roles Of Stress, Social Support and Health-Related Behaviors. Psychology & Health 27.7 (2012): 846-864. Web. 13 Sept. 2012. This was a study conducted to test a personality theory in which stress, social support, health-risk and health-promotion behaviors mediated the relationship between ideal health and perceived physical health. 538 undergraduate students were given a survey assessing the previous topics I mentioned. The study concluded that there was a positive correlation between socially prescribed perfectionism and poorer physical health, and there were also some associations to perceived stress and lower levels of social support. The findings show that when an individual strives for an ideal health, they get a poor outcome because of the increased stress.

Wilmer 2 Also the social support an individual receives is key in determining whether he or she will be successful. The experiment relates to my topic in a very broad sense, but it exams a population that may be too specific to use in future research. Jennifer Colautti is a professor of research at Brock University in Ontario, Canada. She is in charge of all research that deals with education at the university. That being said the university is an excellent academic institution that is respected, so the source seems to be legitimate. Henderson, G. Plenaries: Why The Way We Are Living May Be Bad For Our Mental WellBeing, And What We Might Choose To Do About It: Responding To A 21st Century Public Health Challenge. Public Health. 126. S11-S14. ScienceDirect. Web. 24 Sept. 2012. This is an article that asks for society to re-evaluate all of social norms in individuals lives. It stresses the importance of mental health and well-being as a collective is largely undervalued and underestimated in todays modern times. The article suggested that some attention should be shifted towards it in the future based on evidence. The author is introducing a problem and a solution to mental health. This source is based on a theory with a lot of valid supporting evidence. It could be a possible angle for me to take in the 3-sided paper in the future. The paper was generally written towards academia, the experts in the field, and especially the government. The source appears to be new angle on how we can improve society as a whole for the future. Performance Indicators For Public Mental Healthcare: A Systematic International Inventory. BMC Public Health 12.1 (2012): 214-239. Academic Search Complete. Web. 24 Sept. 2012. This article describes a study conducted of various regions and countries around the world and analyzes their performance indicators in the field of public mental health. There has been a large increase in scientifically studying the performance indicators of public mental health in the last fifteen years. There are 35 performance indicators that are widely accepted by experts in the field. The article uses a variety of previous articles in scholarly journals to put together its information. The source only pulled its information from peer-reviewed articles or journals, greatly increasing the validity of the study. This is the first source to bring statistics into a topic that appeared to be completely absent of such indicators. The article shows the growth of a topic that is beginning to catch on in governments around the world. This will be hard to use in any specific paper, but it does validate my topic to a greater extent than it already was.

Wilmer 3 Thompson, William, et al. Mental Health Promotion In Public Health: Perspectives And Strategies From Positve Psychology. American Journal Of Public Health 101.8 (2011): e1-e9. Web. 13 Sept. 2012. Positive psychology takes an approach that shows all of the positive aspects of what is right about people. The idea behind positive psychology and health is that people that have positive emotions are generally healthier, or make healthier decisions. The journal article also discusses several ways public policy can encourage people with the use of positive psychology to get mentally and physically healthy. The article is extremely idealistic (which I like). It talks about how humans are basically good, and respond to good thoughts and ideas. For instance it says public health can be boosted by classifying strengths of human character. The source also almost seems to reference Dewey, when it describes that the community should encourage positive psychology and mental health. The source could be seen as a sort of brain washing. The world isnt a wonderful place with flowers and candies. This source directly relates to public health. The author has been involved with several pieces in this particular academic journal. Wilkinson, John. The Politics Of Risk And Trust In Mental Health. Critical Quaterly 46.3 (2004): 82-102. Web. 22 Sept. 2012. John Wilkinson worked for the English government in a very poor part of London as Head of Mental health. His essay is describing his experience in a government that couldnt exactly figure out what it wanted to do with its mental health program. The description of his experience shows the politics involved in public mental health policy and how it can be extremely inefficient and confusing. The government in England viewed mental health in generalizations and thought all mental health patients to be child rapists, serial killers, etc. This shows the modern misconception that mental health is the same thing as mental illness. As a source this is very good and useful information. This is a new point of view from which I can look at the mental health aspect of public health. The source may have some author bias because it is a personal experience, which should be noted. All experiences may not be the same as this one.
