Xinrong li Professor Jan English 1101 Sep 16, 2012 My Literacy history As our class going, our literacy memoir is also grows at a steady peace in my life. Just as its name implies, literacy has been used to mean the ability to read and write. I believe that each person has their own experience about literacy memoir, some of them are excited, another are neuter. I have called to mind the earliest or most vivid memory I had of learning to read or write. Personally, I could speak is much earlier than other children even though I could not speak it very fluently and sometimes my parents could not understand the word that I was saying. My parents hope me to be a talent person for reading and writing, so they signed up a basic reading and writing class that aim at young children due to they think everything should be prepare from child.. I started to learn and write words use words cards to study Chinese when I was six years old. My grandfather wrote word on words card with painting, like if he wrote TaiYang which means sun, he would rather paint a sun on word card with words together. So it was evoked my interested in studying words. However, I do not always enjoy writing when I started to write, but I am really enjoyed composing stories, but if I were given any other type of writing assignment I would not be emotionally engaged, and therefore not intrinsically motivated. The earliest experience I had of learning to write was when I was in primary school. I called to mind this

because that was the time I realized my grandfather is a very outgoing writer even though he is not a professional writer. My writing through my fifth grade in primary is kind of messy which means I always write something like a running water and I had trouble to come up with complex ideas and put them together to become a fluent writing. I usually lived with my grandparents because my parents are very busy when I was in primary school. I remembered everyday when I finished my homework that was my grandfather left for me and he would help me to check it. When I got up in the morning, I always saw my writing with a few comments but he never helped me to change it due to he said; it must be noted that learning must be done by a person himself. After a period of time, I felt my writing is better than before. So, my grandfather is one of the person who have a great influence on my writing. A word that he told me everyday is Naixin which means to be patient to my work. Moreover, another person who helped me for my writing is my Chinese teacher called WenJing. When I was in sixth grade in primary school, our teacher asked us to read fairy tale everyday and answered questions about some details in article. After a half semester went, I felt I was not repel as much as before and realized writing is not very hard than I thought because I have devoted myself inside the writing. Above all, I was lucky that I have these two person who helped me when I was in period of enlightenment. Furthermore, when I was in middle school and high school, teachers would like our classmates to change and make comments for our reading and then they would read it. On the one hand, teachers were able to read writers' article, on the other hand, they were able to read readers' comments to identify how the readers' think about articles. An advantage of writers is that they would have two kinds of comments from both teachers and classmates. From my point of view, I would like this method to enhance my writing through read others writing.

Another part for literacy is reading. From my past experiences, I have grown to prefer reading over writing. When I am reading, I can visualize the text in any way that I see fit. As far as I am concerned, reading is better than writing because reading can put you in the reading situation if the topic put your attracted. I started to read long reading since I graduated from primary school. One of my classmate's speaking reminds me of a book that have a deep influence on my mind. I believe it is a universally acknowledged book called Harry Potter hat a series of seven fantasy novels written by a famous British author J. K. Rowling. It is popular in China from the first book published at that period of time and even most of my friends have one. Once I saw it in my sister's home, I felt I would not interested in this book because my sister told me the book is about magic, so it could not catch my eyes. I saw the book everywhere, around classroom, library, bus, etc. I saw the movie of Harry potter with my sisters and I though it was not boring as I thought before. She strongly suggested me to read it because book has a bunch of details that movie did not cover. The movie was just a concentration of book. Finally, I started to read it in Chinese and I was addicted to it at that time even sometimes I had to read several page before I went to bed for I would image if I did not read. Unexpected, I became a loyal reader of Harry Potter. I could say that books motivate me to read and also let me fall. I have followed the next six books in the next few years and I have kept those books until now because I think those books helped me. In the contrast, I am not interested in Chinese poetry because it is hard to understand the meaning. Sometimes I had to spend a whole night to understand a poem and then remember it due to the teachers requirement. Compare poetry and Harris potter, I really enjoy the feeling with reading Harris Potter. To be honest, I am really admire people who are very knowledgeable by reading a lots of books but I do not have patient to read. Harry Potter is an exception. As the proverb goes:"

Read ten thousand books, traveling thousands of miles. The proverb states the importance of reading books. A girl who transfer from another city to my high school and then she became my deskmate which means a class who share a desk with you. When I saw her first time, I was aware she is a glamorous person and her smile is always feel confidence. We have told a lot during rest time and I realized she is a very knowledgeable people and read a lot of books due to her speech is profound. Through our conversation, I have made a decision that I must read books whatever the book is because reading is the best way to improve the comprehensive quality. I did not see while she was reading, the only thing I feel admire when she were talked to me about what she read in the books ocean. Nothing is important than to acquire knowledge. That was the process how I started the real reading, not read in a specific purpose, like homework. Taking all these factors into account, I started to read just for my own pleasure. I started to learn English from first grade in primary school (mostly started from third grade)because my parents thought it is best to learn language as soon as possible and my primary school is one of the school that had permit to teach English from first grade. When I first started to learn the words, I felt it was interesting because it is totally different from Chinese and it is easy than write in Chinese. I like to write English and my teacher always praised I had a good hand writing. We pronounced the words one by one and then made them to became a full short sentence. I remembered the first sentence I could say was my name is Xinrong. Then, English became my major study after I decided to come to the United States. I entered a professional English school. In the begining , I thought it was a good start because I was only study one subject instead of studying eight subjects in high school. Whereas. After a while, from the psychological aspect, the majority of my classmates seem to tend to an unfavorable attitude toward study English only due to we changed a situation from Chinese to English. admitted that I had studied a lot about reading and writing, for example, I could write an essay much quickly than before and I could read article without any dictionary. What is more, when I was in primary school, I always did my reading and writing homework as soon as possible even though sometimes I really do not want to do it, but I would finish it at first when I arrived at home. In contrast, along with the gradually grow up,I do not put them at first. I always do it until the last minutes to hand in in the evening. From hearing some people's suggestion, I will back to basics. Nowadays, I feel I start a new literacy progress because I have to read and write in English instead of Chinese after I came to the United States. I still remembered the first time I believe I will have improvement everyday with the book I read and the essay I write. I am going to working for my best to become a better reader and writer.

Xinrong, You have a number of great stories here to use as examples of your literacy development. Good start. As you revise this paper, the first thing Id suggest you think about it structure and purpose. Consider what you want your reader to get from each paragraph and have some unifying idea to each one. You need to guide your reader more than you do here, and that will come from thinking about how you want to move your reader through your paper. You could start this work by just making a list of what each of your paragraphs is about now, then make an outline of what point you want each paragraph to make. You want each paragraph to be about one idea. Heres a link to a grat resource about paragraph development:

You could benefit greatly from weekly visits to the WRC, and I highly recommend that you visit the WRC website and sign-up for appointments with a tutor. Its free and it you can meet with the same tutor each week so that you and that person can get to know your writing well. You sign up on-line.
