Ingram 3-Sided Assignment

Public:

My topic is is organic food better for you than conventional food? The first group interested in my topic is the public. I am not talking about everybody in the public, but mainly the people who buy food. In most families there is only one person who buys groceries and their opinion is the most important when it comes to organic food. Everybody in the public is interested in my topic because they eventually choose between organic or conventional food. Each person makes a decision for separate reasons.

In the group of people who buy food there seems to be three sub groups of people. The first group thinks organic is the only way to eat. People like David only eat organic food and believe eating other wise is not good for you. They have taken the organic food movement to the extreme. I get organic food so I dont eat unhealthy preservatives (Wynmor). This group has this opinion for many reasons. Either they have ate the food and by own experiences thought organic food is more healthy or the people in this group have listened to other people who believe in organic food. The second group doesnt believe organic food gives any health benefits. They think

organic food is just a way to make more money and really has chemicals in it too. This group has this opinion because theyve heard some facts that they base all their judgments on. The third group doesnt have an opinion and just buys whats cheap. The last group has their opinion either because they dont care about being healthy or cant afford organic food so they dont pay any attention to it.

Farmers:

Organic farmers have a huge impact on my topic. Farmers are the ones who grow all the food and promote organic farming. Most of the farmers are on the smaller scale. There seems to be an organic local movement. The farmers want people to buy organic food, which is grown locally so the money stays in the community. There are also the farmers who are the large-scale organic farmers. They grow large amounts of organic food and sell it to the big companies who distribute the food across the nation.

The small-scale farmers believe organic food and products are the best things for people to eat and use. Now they grow locally and sell locally so they promote organic in the places they live. To increase organic farmers success, we must increase the number of varieties bred for organic systems. (Four Organic). They have this opinion because they grow the food and the money they make relies on people buying their food. They have to convince people to buy their organic local food, which is more expensive than conventional food. The larger scale farmers could

have any opinion, but they grow it so the companies will buy their product. They also promote organic food because if more people buy it from the companies demand is more so the companies buy more from the farmers.

Research:

The third group are the researchers who study and process data on organic food. These researchers study and make decisions on organic food. Im looking at the group of researchers who did large-scale studies on organic food. Also researchers who arent associated with an organic food company are the researchers I am talking about.

Most of the researchers have the same viewpoint on organic food. Most believe organic food has no health benefit over conventional food. There isnt much difference between organic and conventional foods, if youre an adult and making a decision based solely on your health, (Brandt). Mainly because they say not enough research has been done to be able to make a clear and definite decision. The government however, does not actually claim that these are safer and healthier (Gillman). The only positives that they found were in that organic food sometimes has higher nutrient levels, but that wasnt always true and could be attributed to other factors. Also organic food tends to have less pesticide residue on it. The factor against it is the residue on conventional food is still lower than the restrictions that if higher could cause harm to someone. Most researchers believe this way because

of research they did the research themselves. Also research done by large groups of researchers. All the researchers have found the same conclusions and it has become generally accepted.
