Question Two INTRO In response to the statement above I believe that the majority of music magazines have higher

r readership statistics of men compared to women, a strong example of this is the magazine of Q. However, within the music magazine industry there are magazines that are aimed more towards the female audience; Top of the Pops being a good example, yet the difference in these magazines are the target ages for the magazines Q being more of young to middle aged adults and Top of the Pops being a young teenage girl magazine. There are also magazines that are more balanced having a closer even number men to women readers, the example I shall use during this essay is Kerrang.

Q MAGAZINE This magazine appeals more to older men, having a male readership of 75% compared to the 25% female. Target Audience: 30-40 years old Genre of Rock

These are aimed at males because The male has aggressive confrontational facial features with fire coming out of his mouth therefore highlights that it is dangerous, powerful etc. Fire connotations are usually to do with rage, destruction and energy <- aimed more at males because they are strong, emotionless, powerful. The female is sexualised being in the rain having dark red lip stick and dark eyes being interesting and having an element of danger and unknown, making the males want to buy it because of the dream women being sexy and intriguing. Linking with above comment ^ women would not want to buy this as its derogatory and objectified towards women, losing their power and respect. Mostly dark colours are used; Blacks, Reds being harsh and bold colours The Font is harsh and striking, rough

They are looking direct into the camera -> showing that it is direct to the audience The type of bands mentioned are hard rock bands which are more for the male genre because of the harsh sounds and heavy bases, being portrayed within the text fonts and colours (bold & Striking)

KERRANG MAGAZINE This magazines is more of a balanced readership having male readers being 56% and females 44% Genre of Rock Target Audience: 16-24 year old

These have a split for both genders because There are pinks and blues used which angle towards the female gender as stereo typically females like these colours because they are bright and have positive connotations (happy, light music) yet the colours used and not over powering the magazine so men will want to buy the magazine as well. The magazine isnt as serious as others having happy yet still serious facial expressions are half smiles. Looking direct into the camera to address audience but friendly not confrontational. The Masthead is more soft compared to Q and uses genders for both colours being blue, white black etc The bands mentioned on the front cover are more for both genders rather than specific for the males. Even though men are on the front cover and can be aimed for women because of the stereo typical bad boy that women are attracted to because of the danger and excitement. (Tattoos) men can see them as musical icons more because of their music rather than their looks. The people on the front covers look a little rough being intriguing yet they also friendly. They are middle aged highlighting the typical age the magazine is aimed at compared to Top of the Pops.

TOP OF THE POPS MAGAZINE Unlike the other two magazines I will be writing about the magazine Top of the Pops is more angles towards the female audience having a 86% readership from females and 14% male. Target Audience; Females 11-15 years old Genre of Pop

These are aimed more at females because The colours used within the magazine are bright such as pinks and yellows and purples aiming more towards the female audience. The people that are used as the main picture for the magazine are usually young pop artists that are up and coming main stream highlighting the age of the females. They use bubble writing that is soft and easy to read highlighting it more for females. The pictures are of young good looking males that females idealise and want as their typical boy friend. The statements used within the front cover are simple and cheesy aimed at the you female audience ( see quote about Justins room)
