I was too busy preparing this months Matters to

go down to Pahi to watch the re-enactment of
the landing tha t started Paparoas 150th celebrations. But Mrs Editor (who doubles up as resident
proof-reader and coffee-maker for the Matters
production team) went, and told me how interesting and moving it was.
One of the themes presented was the continuity
between past and present. Those landings by the
early European settlers werent the first, nor the
last. Since then, theres been a continuous stream
of new folk arriving and contributing to the life of
the district. Another theme was the isolation of
the area, both then and even now. Not so much
in physical dista nce, perhaps, but in terms of its
sense of administrative and economic disconnection from the rest of the region.
Being pioneers and living in out-of-the-way
places can breed some interesting traits. A real
sense of belonging is one, independence of spirit
another. From those come something you often
hear folk from Maungaturoto say, with a deserved
sense of pride. We did that. We did it ourselves!
Sometimes, thoug h, you mig ht hear a different
story. Concern about the way the town is changing, or that the newbies are coming in and trying
to alter things. And theres certainly some truth
in that, for if you go along to meetings its often
the newer folk who are there, putting forward the
ideas and raising their hands when theres a job
to be done. Thats how I ended up as Editor!
Somewhere in all this, theres a moral that we
might try to tease out as we prepare for our own
anniversary. On the one hand, its to do with ackno wledging that there are things tha t we wa nt
to change, but also things tha t people want to
preserve, and have worked hard to sustain. On
the other, its to do with recognising that, while
theres no guarantee tha t change is good, its
pretty certain tha t clinging to the past wont work.
The outside world, and our own younger generations, will make sure of that.
So change needs to be for everyone. A balance is
needed, and a sense of shared ownership. And
this is where the 150th can make a real impact.
For its the chance for us to bring the two sides of
this story together. To put on show those aspects
of the past that we cherish and want to retain, but
also to welcome and engage with wha ts new.
And for us all old and new to be in it together, as equals.

Cheers, David

One year to go to Maungaturotos 150
Celebrations

th

ith only 1 year to go, planning is well underway for the celebrations of Maungaturoto
being 150 years old. We now have a monthly newsletter with updates, photos and information about
the event. If yo u wo uld like to receive this, please

on page 9 of this edition of the Matters.

Trash and Treasure Triumph

he Order of St Johns 2012 Trash and Treasure

had another very successful week this year,
with another record turnover. In total, it raised in
excess of $13,500 net a very pleasing result.
There was a healthy supply of donatio ns for the
event, and a good turnout of supporters, all on the
look out both for a special bargain or that little
something to come in useful, and at the same time
to support worthy causes.

Beautification work rolls on!

ou will have noticed the beautifica tion around

town lately, which is now focusing on the area
in front of the Library and adjacent shops. Wed like
to kno w wha t you think about it all, and would love
to hear ideas about how to make it even better.
Want to have your say? If so, either email Nyree on
nyreeanddaniel@hotmail.com or write a letter to PO
Box 113, Maungaturoto.
If you wa nt to help with wor king bees you can
contact Richard Moore on 09 431 8383.

Santa Parade and Christmas Carnival Saturday 15th Dec 2012

s Terri Donaldson explains in her article on

page 7, this year the Santa Parade will finis h at
the Maungaturoto Primary School, kick starting the
Christmas Carnival. We are asking Community
groups, sports groups and interest clubs to come on
board with the Carnival by hosting an event or activity. If any group would like to do so, you can contact Nyree on 09 431 8462. There is also the opportunity for people to hold a stall to sell items either
on tables or car boot style. The stalls will be located
at the school. There is a small charge of $10 per
stall. Please contact Marge Paton on 431 8148 if
you would like to book a site. In addition, Terri
would no doubt love offers of help to marshal the
event and run some of the sideshows on the day.
Thanks to funding from Pub Charity, well have new
Christmas flags and bunting up in to wn during December as a lead-up to the day. Thanks Pub Charity
for your support!

Date of next meeting.

ur next meeting is on Wednesday 7th November 2012 at 7.30 pm in the Maungaturoto

Centennial Hall. The meetings are open to all, so if
you need for further informa tion, contact the secretary, Nyree Alcock on 09 431 8462.

More than thir ty people

also gave up varying
amounts of time
througho ut the week,
helping to collect materials and staff the event.
Several people also had
their trucks available for
pick-ups and deliveries. Thank you to all of you.
The money raised goes to the volunteers and cadets
of the Otama tea St John Area Committee, to help
them continue in their excellent work over recent
years. All the leftover clothes and soft toys, as well
as four banana boxes full of childrens books have
been also donated to the Papakura Kiwanis Club, to
send to Vanuatu so its not only local children
who are the beneficiaries.
To the Otamatea Area Committee region and beyond, tha nk yo u for your outstanding support in
donating goods and then so willingly parting with
your money to purchase items in return.

Albie Paton on behalf of the O tamatea Area

Committee, Order of St John

Editors note: As usual, the real

hero behind this event was Albie, who did so much to set it
up, and encourage and cajole
others to get involved. Thanks a
bunch, Albie and no need to
look so glum!

HOMEBUILDERS
MAUNGATUROTO/PAPAROA
Family violence awareness

amily vio lence awareness is not a comfortable

thing for any of us, but for some people in our
community violence in their home is a normal part
of life.
On the 25th November the staff at Homebuilders will
be firing up the barbeque on the street and giving
away sausages and white ribbons to bring awareness of this problem in our community again. We
use this day to remember the wo men and children
whose lives are caught up in fa mily violence, both in
our community and around the country.
They are not heroes such as those who fought in the
wars and who are celebrated each year on ANZAC
Day. They are just women and children in a daily
battle for survival. Some suffer from post traumatic
stress disorder, and often children find it hard to
learn at school. They lead very uncertain lives. They
need and deserve our support and care. They need
us to be aware that many of them live in fear of this
hidden threat on a daily basis.
Since we last cooked sausages on the street in
Maungaturoto, thirteen women and ten children
have died at the hands of those who say they love
them in New Zeala nd.
Each year your support grows and we are very
grateful for that, so we will look forward to seeing
you out there again on the 25th. Please come and
get a sausage and a ribbon, and take a moment to
think of those who struggle with this social ill.

OTAMATEA GREY POWER

pologies for the glitch in communication over

the last couple of months but I assure you we
are still alive.

Recent achievements

e have had a number of achievements this

year. For example, the No engine braking
signs have gone up, on both sides of the town.
Better signage has also been installed at the one
lane bridges near Matakohe, tho ugh this is not the
answer many of the group wanted, with two lanes
needed for the traffic on this highway these days.
A representation from Greypower and the public
met with the Fire Chief from Whangarei about moving, or muffling, or turning off at nig ht, the siren on
Craig Garnetts building. The Fire Chiefs at Wha ngarei and Maungaturoto have proposed to do a survey, until the end of January, to see how many of
the crew responded to their cell phones, or pagers,
and who needed the siren. Cell pho nes and pagers
do not work everywhere. Not many members were
in favour of complete removal of the siren.

Recent meetings

e have had an interesting couple of months.

Patricia Hunt was speaker for August and
told us of her recent trip to Canada, with some
amazing photographs to support her.

omebuilders will ho ld their AGM at the Community House on the 8th November at 2pm.
Everyone is welcome.

Judith Lupto n was Septembers speaker and she told

of the start and progress of the Maungaturoto Garden Club. The cha nges, with the change of residents
in the community, were surprising, with more interest in the flo wers than the propagation. No longer is
it a group of young mothers who bring their small
children along. The membership has got older and
more varied. Judith is very knowledgeable on weeds
and noxious invaders.

Maungaturotos 150th Celebrations

t the time of writing this newsletter we ha ve

one year and about two weeks left to have
everything ready for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd November 2013. We are still finalising our exact programme. At this stage it looks like this:

Friday 1st will see the start of the event, with a

meet-a nd-greet evening at the Centennial Hall.
This will also be the occasion of the opening of
the time capsule, deposited during the building
of the hall 50 years ago.

Saturdays programme will include a landing at

the site of the old Bickerstaffe wharf. This will
involve a powhiri, followed by a parade to the
Maungaturoto Country Club. Here, the day will
continue with static displays from the past and
present, old time sports events and some golden
oldies sports games. On Saturday evening, there
will be a reunion dinner at the Centennial Hall
for those that want to spend time ca tching up
with old friends and family. For those who feel
they want a less formal evening, there will be
entertainment at the Country Club.

Sunday will include an interdeno mina tional

church service at the Centennial Hall, to be followed by a light luncheon. After this, the formal
closure of the event will occur, with the replacement of the updated time capsule.
No doubt some will carry on reminiscing and
stretching the truth well into the afternoon!
During the weekend it is hoped to run a series of
old home movies and slideshows of old and not so
old photos. One movie that we already have contains approximately ten minutes of the Centennial
landing and parade, sports at the old domain beside the dairy factory from 1963. Another features
snippets from old calf club days, Pahi regatta,
Paparoa Jersey bull sale and the West Indies cricket
team playing Northland in the early 1950s.
It is also envisaged that a history trail throug hout
the district will be organised for those that want to
drive themselves around.
When we have the programme finalised we will be
asking for people to express interest in the various
events. So watch this space!

ia ora and greetings to all. Welcome to term four, our last

term for 2012.

As you can see with the upcoming events, the students, staff
and parents have a very busy but fun term ahead. Keep an eye
out for different events the community can be involved in, such
as the PTA Fun Run.
Last term we held Parents Day and Grandparents Day. The
teachers and students worked very hard in preparation for these
and the results were outsta nding. We tr ust tha t everyone who
attended had a great time. We also held our annual speech
competition. What a fantastic effort all the children put in. A big
congratulations to Ocean Shadbolt who went on to represent

Duke of Edinburgh Adventures

On Friday 28th September at 2pm, Brent, Matthew, James, Mrs Bruce, along with Mr Torrie
(Rodney College), Stephen Orchard (Instructor), Chantelle and Ben travelled to the Kaimanawas for their gold/silver training. It was great being able to learn all the skills necessary
for our respective levels in this amazing environment and putting them into practice.
The group became adept at map reading, route finding, weather patterns etc. New tramping and leadership skills were also learnt, as well as the importance of having the correct
waterproof raincoats!
Matthew, James and Brent enjoyed creating an extreme photo
shoot at a hunters campsite! Thank you to Stephen Orchard for such
an exciting 4 days training.
Brent, Matthew, James and Elese put their training into practice on
the 10- 12th October when they travelled to Mt Taranaki for a pre expedition tramp around the Pouakai Circuit. This proved to be perfect
preparation for their December qualifying expedition to Mt Ruapehu
to complete the 70km Round the Mountain Track.
They learnt (and experienced) how quickly mountain conditions can
change from white out, brief sleet showers and strong mountain winds to bright sunshine
all in one day! The students have developed a huge respect for the mountain environment
and terrain which will now stand them in good stead for their December Expedition.
They were indeed lucky to see Mt Taranaki at all as the mountain had not been visible for
ten days, and as we drove away at midday on Friday it again was enveloped in thick cloud!
Thank you to Mr Hutching for his on-going support of the DOE programme. The students
certainly wouldnt be able to venture to these places without it.

aparoas 150th celebrations started as the Matters went to

press: here are glimpses of the opening events.

George Skeltons play Allen Adair offered a delightful setting for

the anniversary weekend. Built up from short scenes depicting
Allens arrival, settling and establishment in Pahi and Paparoa, and
illustrated with historic pho tos and music, it drew the aud ience
into the lives of the pioneers and their families. The director Peter
Flower and the whole cast are to be congratulated, particularly the
singers. Guy Smith gave a thoughtful performance as Allen, and
cameo parts were portrayed memorably by Dennise Brownlie and
the Carey children.
At the Saturday ceremonies, three clinker-built boats brought
new settlers to land at Pahi, to be welcomed by a powhiri and
glorious sunshine. Graham Taylor and the official gues ts gave a
warm and insightful welco me to all, and the celebrations were
declared open by Northland MP Mike Sabin. The colourful afternoon parade of floats, animals and vintage cars wandered
festively through Paparoa, leading residents and visitors to an afternoon of traditional fun and games at the showgrounds.
Congratula tions to all organisers and participants and Happy
Birthday Paparoa!

Monthly Meeting

n Thursday 18th October, members visited three gardens in

the Mataka na/Warkworth area. At the first, an abstract/
impressionist artist was developing her new garden and large
pond. We then moved on to a protea nursery called Protea Patch,
which featured a new development, opened in 2010. This consisted of a wonderful sculptural habitat combining na tural materials with huge trees blown down in a freak storm in 2007, and
now turned into sculptures. The natural sculptures and artworks
are part of work in progress along with garden plantings: a wonderful experience. Our last visit was to a local garden centre.
Next month we meet at the Amb ulance Statio n at 9 am on Thursday 15th November for a trip to Whakapirau, where we will visit
three local gardens. Remember to bring your lunch!

Garden Notes for November

e are coming into summer and plants need to be well watered if the weather is dry. Mulch with bark, compost and
grass clippings. Newly planted shrubs and trees need watering
well.
Roses will be in bloom and will be at their best this month. Trim
back shoots that ha ve flowered to encourage more flowers. They
will benefit from fertiliser also.
Apply fertiliser to citrus and other fruit trees. Young fruit trees
need to have their first summer pruning. Trim out growth in the
centre of the tree.
Dwarf and climbing beans can be planted this month. For a continuous harvest of beans plant at regular 3 weekly intervals.

fter an absence of some months from the

pages of the Matters, we are now back on
track in bringing you up to date with the happenings and events of the last few months.

Oliver!

his years major production of Oliver! was another success for cast, crew and the thea tre. A
big attraction was the gala opening night, supported by the Paparoa Lions. By making it a wine
and cheese evening and by selling the tickets, they
ensured that this was a special night, and the
money raised goes to Project Promise.

The public around the region were again keen to

buy tickets, so an extra show was put on. ORT
thanks all the people who contributed to the success of the show not least the public who made
it all possible.

Allen Adair

aparoa 150th Celebration committee approached us to help them present a local play
for the occasion. George Skelton has written a
script from the book on Allen Adair, a fictional
character based on the lives of the settlers in the
region. Peter Flower assisted in refining the script
and took on the role of Director. After difficulties in
casting the sho w, ORT members stepped in to help
out and with the aid of some cajoling, sweet
talk and persuasion a cast was formed. Guy
Smith bravely took on the task of acting the lead
character, Allen Adair.

By the time you read this, it will have been performed over Labour Weekend, with four performances in all. On behalf of the Paparoa Community,
we tha nk those who came along and thus supported the 150th celebrations.

Three Little Pigs

hile Allen Adair was developing, this

years pantomime was in productio n. This
is an adaptation of The Three Little Pigs. Lots of
eager children contested at the aud itio ns to play
the three pigs and supporting roles and be in the
chorus. It is pleasing to see the response as one
aim of ORT is to give young people an opportunity
of performing on a stage.

The pantomime starts a run of six shows over two

weekends, on Friday November 23rd. Tickets will be
on sale at the Lotto shop and online at ort.org.nz.

Northland Performing Arts Festival

he Northland Performing Arts Festival was

held in Whangarei in September and members from ORT and Maungaturoto were strongly
represented with outstanding results. Our members
gained 11 first places, 9 second places, 25 third
places and many highly, or very highly, commended credits. Congratulatio ns to all participants
and, again, the strength of our local talent comes
to the fore. Experience and confidence gained by
involvement in the theatre demonstrates the value
of a facility such as ORT in our community. The opportunity to sing in a theatre in front of your peers,
and to gain valuable stage craft while participa ting
in the various productions, provides great value to
the ind ivid ual. ORT is very proud of you all!

Annual General Meeting

ur Annual General meeting is on Thursday

November 15th at 7.30pm, in the theatre.
ORT is continuing to develop and it is essential that
we have an active committee who will ta ke it to the
next level. So come along and show your support.
The Santa Parade is on December 15th. Ideas for
another great float are being sought.

Tess Gerritsen: Last to Die

Fiction

Jodi Picoult: Between the Lines

hillippa Gregory: The Kingmakers Daughter

In this novel the author continues her series,

The Cousins War. Anne and Isabel Neville, daughters of the Earl of Warwick (nicknamed The King maker), are used as pawns in his vicious political
games. An enthralling historical story, set in the late
1400s of the reign of Edward IV.

ictoria Hislop: The Thread

The author writes of a city in Greece from
1917 throug h to the Second World War
and the present day. With a large cast of memorable characters, this is both a romance and a thriller,
telling the story of how Greece got to where it is
today. Highly recommended.

Kaipara Knights Soccer Club

Club the
2012 season in retrospect
Kaipara entered seven teams into the Rodney and
Otamatea Soccer Association competition during
2012, one for each of the grades. Players ranged in
age from 3 to 65 years old, with 79 players in total
a slight drop from last year.
During the season, several coaches and parents attended the Whole of Football course at Wellsford, to
inform us of the cha nges being made to encourage
young players to play soccer and stay with the
game. A number of people also went to an Introduction to Junior Coaching session at Maungaturoto
Primary School before the season started.
Weve had mixed results as far as competition placings go this year, but we had great success on the
field, with our younger players learning, participating and enjoying the sport and likewise the
coaches, managers, parents and supporters. The
club has an inclusive and fair-minded stance: we are
not jus t about competition, we are about having a
go, having fun and supporting others.
Our older teams have continued to perform well
under the leadership of their extremely motivated
coaches. Our 17th Grade team was 1st out of three
teams, while the open grade came 2nd place out of
five teams.
Congratula tions to the following players who received trophies at the prize-giving in September:
6th Grade. Most Improved: Felix Le MesurierCowbourne. Sportsperson of the Year: DJ Brain.
Player of the Year: Allum Smith.
8th Grade: Most Improved: Billie Le MesurierCowbourne. Sportsperson of the Year: John Hampshire. Player of the Year: Brenda Ferguson.
10 th Grade: Most Improved: Arjan Pedersen. Sportsperson of the Year: Cory Browne. Player of the Year:
Emma Huband.
12 th Grade: Most Improved: Kalib Sunley. Sportsperson of the Year: Alice Pa ton. Player of the Year:
Travis Flannagan.
14 th Grade: Most Improved: Samantha Allen. Sportsperson of the Year: Ruby-Rose Hallamore. Player of
the Year: Isaak Sunley.
17 th Grade: Most Improved: Dyla n Sims. Sportsperson
of the Year: Toni Bell. Player of the Year: Harri Millar.
Open Grade: Most Improved: Damia n Rowe. Sportsperson of the Year: Aaron Preston. Player of the Year:
Peter Schwarz.
Coach of the Year: Harri Millar and Dirk Smyth.
ROSA results: Open Grade team placed second. 17th
grade team won their grade.

Footy Fun in Otamatea

n Wednesday 26th September, a successful

football tournament was held at the Kaiwa ka
Sports Association grounds. Ninety children in fifteen teams from Kaiwaka Primary, Otamatea Christian School and Maungaturoto Primary competed in
a fun Year 3/4
and a competitive Year
5/6 tournament.
The day was a
great hit with
children, some
of whom had
not played in
this type of
event before.
The skills, enthusiasm and brilliant tea m spirit displayed by the students were a credit to their
schools.
With the help of referees from Kaipara Knights Football club, Sport Northland and Owen Liiv from
Northern Federation Foo tball, along with a couple of
parents from Maungaturoto Primary School, the day
ran smoothly and the weather stayed kind. Winners
of the Year 5/6 tournament were Kaiwaka 2 who
won all of their games.

Were all rooting for our local
gardener of the year!

f you read your Matters, youll have come across

the na mes of Richard and Diana Moore quite a
lot over the last year. But even if you dont, you
cant have missed the fruits of their labours when
you walk around town. For its largely thanks to
their enthusiasm, skills and simple hard work tha t
the beautification work has been going on, and has
achieved all that it has.

Now Richards talents have attracted wider attention. Hes been selected as Best Green-fingered
Neighbour by NZ Gardener and is now one of
the ten finalists for overall NZ Gardener of the Year,
which is chosen by public vote!
Sadly the editor didnt learn of this until last
months edition of the Matters was already in your
mailbox. And the deadline for voting is October
29th, so its now too late to get on-line and vote for
him. But yo u can wis h him luck and keep your fingers crossed. Whatever happens, he and Diana are
certainly our gardeners of the year!

Keep the dust down!

ow that the rain has stopped (?) the unsealed

roads are drying and back to being dusty.

Drivers, when using unsealed roads, please consider the people who live there.
We can clean the dust out of our homes but, unfortunately, we cant do the same with our lungs.
Please drive slowly on these roads and keep the
dust levels down.
Your thoug htfulness would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to those drivers who already are displaying
community spirit by travelling at a speed that is
considerate of others.
