Bachelor of Computing Science

INTERNATIONAL ADMISSION INFORMATION


Program Description
The Bachelor of Computing Science degree consists of two years of concentrated computing studies preceded by two year of general study. It is designed for those wishing to enter into Computing Science, or for those wishing to pursue graduate studies. The program will mainly concentrate on small to medium business environments. The BCS degree is designed for a wide range of candidates including (but not limited to): Graduates of any (non-computing) undergraduate program wishing to obtain a second degree in Computing Science Graduates of two or three year diploma programs in Computing, MIS and Information Science Students currently enrolled in any TRU program Students who have attended or completed their first two years at another institution Past graduates of BCS or any undergraduate computing program wishing to upgrade their knowledge and skills High school graduates All those wishing to enter a career involving computer based systems with special emphasis on small and medium sized companies and organizations The degree will: Enable students in academic streams to obtain a Computing Science degree Allow students with a 2 or 3 year Computing Science diploma to continue their education and obtain a degree in Computing Science Permit students in the BSc and BA degrees more course options including obtaining a Minor in Computing Science Allow past students the ability to upgrade skills to maintain or enhance employability Allow employees required to upgrade their skills, but not necessarily interested in completing the degree, to take needed courses

Admission Requirements
First Year Entry
BC Grade 12 or equivalent *BC Math 12 (Principles) with a C+ or better or equivalent (within the last 2 years) *BC English 12 with a minimum 73% on combined English 12 and Government exam within the last 5 years; or LPI test with Level 4 or higher within the last 2 years; or completion of TRUs English 0600; or completion of TRUs ESAL 0570 or ESAL 0580 with a minimum grade of C+; or TOEFL test results with a minimum 88 (IBT) with no section below 20, minimum 570 (paper based) with TWE 4.5+ or minimum 230 (computer based) with Essay 4.5+; or IELTS minimum score of 6.5 (no band below 6.0); or CAEL minimum score of 70 (no subtest below 60) *The math and English requirements may be completed during the first semester of study upon commencement of the program.

Transfer Students

Students who have attended or completed their first 2 years at another institution are accepted on the same basis as students attending TRU. Articulation Arrangements with Other Program TRUs 2 year CSOM diploma program and most other 2 and 3 year IT diploma programs are fully transferable to BCS. Most other postsecondary programs are transferable to BCS.

Third & Fourth Year Entry Professional Entry

60 / 90 credits of study at a post secondary institution respectively Post secondary studies and work experience in the Information Technology Field

Application for Admission


Applications are submitted to the International Admissions office. Consideration will be given to all applicants who meet the minimum education requirements. Admission into the Bachelor of Computing Science degree program is determined by an open admission process. The minimum documentation required for an application to be processed is: A completed International application form $100 CDN application fee (if applicable) A copy of your interim or final high school grades and any post secondary institution(s) you may have attended. Official transcripts are required for admittance to the program, however may be received after the application is processed.

Double Degrees (BCS & BBA)


Double degrees in both computing and business will provide graduates with a strong foundation from which to build a successful career in the information technology industry. To earn double degrees, student must meet the requirements for both programs. This will not take eight years of study (4 years for each degree) as many core and elective courses can be double counted which means they can be used for credit in both programs. Through careful course selection, it is possible to complete these two degrees in just five years. For complete details, discuss with the BCS Program Advisor at the commencement of your program.

Re-Application
If you have previously applied to the BCS and were not accepted OR applied but did not attend last year, you must submit a NEW application and contact the International Admissions office ensure that all required documentation is still on file and complete.

Co-Operative Education (Co-op)


Co-op is an optional component for the BCS program. It offers students the opportunity to obtain paid, career-related work experience in their field of study. Each Co-op work term is generally four months in length. LPI (Language Proficiency Index)


The purpose of the LPI is to provide information about an individual's competency in English. For scheduled testing sessions and detailed information review the online information at www.lpitest.ca or pick up an information pamphlet at TRUs Assessment Centre in OM1762. The current cost is $109.00 + tax (subject to change without notice). Note: Test scores are valid for admission only if it has been written within the last 2 years.

Program Advising
Program guides will be developed for each student admitted to the BCS program. These guides list all BCS requirements in years one through four and will identify if these requirements have been completed. Students entering in third or fourth year must complete any missing first or second year courses prior to starting BCS, or if approved by the BCS Program Advisor, during the first semester of study.

To qualify for third or fourth year entry into the BCS Degree program
It is anticipated that not all students seeking third or fourth year entry will meet all of the first and second year requirements. Course deficiencies must be addressed prior to admittance to third or fourth year, or during the first semester of study in the BCS degree program.
