Presidents Address
Dear Friends and Colleagues, In a week, Election Day will be here, and it is a time that we reflect on the policies being presented from candidates at all levels. We all know the subject of infrastructure and what is needed to create a well-functioning national transportation system is critical. The problems are significant and we hear about it every day. Many of our highways need repair, bridges are old and falling apart, and the system that controls our airways is half a century old. There is no doubt it will cost a significant amount of money to fix the problems; however the alternative is not pretty either. The American Society of Civil Engineers has estimated that failing to invest in the country's bridges and roads will cost the country by the year 2020 $3.1 trillion in lost GDP growth. As a concerned professional in the AEC industry, I am pleased that so many of our professional associations such as the ACEC, AIA, and AGC, to name a few, advocate on the behalf of us and our country. To learn more about what they are doing and the issues they are raising, below are some links. An outline for plans to address the nations deteriorating transportation infrastructure and plans to fund it is as critical to our countrys future as foreign policy, the economy and jobs. http://acec.org/advocacy/index.cfm http://aia.org/advocacy/index.htm http://www.agc.org/cs/advocacy Tim Duncan, AIA President/CEO CADsoft Consulting

Collaboration: Civil 3D and Revit Ron Couillard, AEC Technical Consultant I had done a post a while back on Civil 3D and Revit working together but recently more questions have been asked regarding the workflow of Civil and Architectural files working together. Which way do I go? Do I have the Revit people export out to dwg files or do the adsk file export? What are the advantages or disadvantages of each? Is there a reason I get 2D elements every time they give me files? Can they give me 3D elements? Read More

complex geometric models that would be difficult to model with interactive techniques. This type of exploratory design is best served by a scripting language that is designed for exploratory programming. Additionally DesignScript is intended to be used by designers with little previous programming experience. It is much less rigid than conventional programming languages, and it is completely integrated into the host geometry application (currently 64-bit AutoCAD). Learn More.
