storage of grounds and building mainte-
nance equipment.
The screenwall is an adjacent, 4,200-
square-foot space that will house new
electrical equipment and will be screened
to match other buildings; the area will be
located south of building 1.
The company also is building a 24,000-
square-foot remote data center on the east
side of the property.
Site Renovations
Walbridge is incorporating new walk-
ways and walking trails to connect the
heart of the campus, Campus Commons
Oval, to the rest of the site.
“A focal point containing space for
sculptures and seat walls will be located
at the southern end of the diagonal path,
creating a backdrop to the end of the
pedestrian path,” the company says.
The pond near building 2 also will be
expanded and upgraded and will include
improved stormwater management
measures.
Walbridge will plant additional plants to
rejuvenate the site’s existing vegetation and
provide a unique habitat for wildlife, the
company explains.
Delta Dental plans to seek Wildlife
Habitat Council certification for its efforts
to develop sustainable habitats on site, the
company says.
Other gathering areas will be scattered
throughout the site.
“The spaces are planned throughout
the campus, including the courtyards in
between buildings, trellis-covered paths
bisecting the oval and a conversations pit
located at the northern terminus of the
diagonal,” Walbridge says of the headquar-
ters’ landscaping.
Delta Dental visitors will drive over the
pond on a new bridge that will direct them
to the main lobby.
The new visitor parking lot will be sur-
rounded by gardens and fountains, the
company says.
“The inviting architecture of the new
construction will draw visitors and staff
onto a new entrance drive located on
the north side of the campus,” the com-
pany explains.
Walbridge is building the Delta Dental
headquarters to LEED gold standards, the
FEBRUARY 2009
company says.
The sustainable features include:
■ Roofs that meet the Environmental
Protection Agency’s cool roof specifica-
tions;
■ Energy-efficient building systems and
equipment;
■ Smaller surface parking lots with land-
scaped areas, which will minimize the
heat-island effect;
■ Refrigerants that don’t contribute to
global warming or ozone layer depletion;
■ Building orientations and positions that
take the most advantage of natural heat
and sunlight;
■ Use of local, recycled materials;
■ An interior environment that facilitates
individual occupant’s preferred light and
heat levels; and
■ Adequate ventilation to all occupied
spaces.
