Inverter Research Preparatory Assignments: Step 2

AC Current Regulator Homework

Date Submitted: 5/03/2012 Date Due: 01/04/2012

1) Design a single phase inverter for interfacing a 1 k W Photovoltaic (PV) system with the 50 Hz, 220 Vrms AC utility grid. The line resistance and inductance values are 20 m and 100 H. The DC bus voltage is 400V, and the PV system can be represented with a current source. The criteria involves low cost and 95% efficiency at full load. Select the inverter components and simulate the full load performance. Employ a hysteresis current regulator, and a linear DC bus voltage regulator. Simulate the PV system with a current source that linearly increases in 50 ms from zero to full rating and operates 10 cycles until it drops with the same rate to zero again. Comment on the regulator performance. 2) For the same converter, employ a linear current regulator, select a switching frequency comparable to what you obtained in (a). Compare and comment on the results. 3) Design a three phase inverter for interfacing a 250 kW wind turbine generator system to the 50 Hz, 220 Vrms AC utility grid. The line parameters are 2 m, and 10 H. The DC bus voltage is 750V and the wind turbine system can be modeled with a current source. The criteria involves low cost and 97 % efficiency at full load. Different from part 1, and 2, in this case a line current THD less than 5% is also required. Select the inverter components and simulate the full load performance. Employ a hysteresis current regulator, and a linear DC bus voltage regulator. Simulate the wind power generator system with a current source that linearly increases in 50 ms from zero to full rating and operates 10 cycles until it drops with the same rate to zero again. Comment on the regulator performance. 4) For the same three phase converter, employ a linear current regulator, select a switching frequency comparable to what you obtained in (c). Compare and comment on the results. 5) Show that at no-load, the three-phase inverter can provide reactive power to the AC grid. What is the limit to the VARs the inverter can provide? Comment on the results. 6) For the three phase hysteresis regulator case, show that under specific operating conditions limit cycle or double-band hysteresis error can occur. 7) Instead of stationary frame current regulator, employ synchronous frame current regulator, show the performance difference, if any. Work independently. In the report, submit a copy of your simulation programs along with the report. Your report must be well commented. Electronic report files are preferrable, but in word, not PDF format.
