El Desamor Genre: Magic Realism Spanish Dialogue DRAFT #4 FADE IN: EXT.

MEXICAN CANTINA DUSK (1946) A deep black shadow appears moving towards the entrance of an adobe made cantina. The shadow stops in front of the old wooden doors. From that shadow two hands appear and push in those doors. One of them is the beautiful hand of a lady while the other seems to be that one of a skeleton. The Shadow enters the cantina. INT. MEXICAN CANTINA DUSK The sunset light enters through the doorway reaching everybody inside. AGUSTIN, 60s white hair, significantly pale and wearing a blazer, is sitting alone on a table. He raises his head to spot a tall lady in the entrance wearing a long black dress and a feathered hat, that woman is THE CATRINA. The Catrina swaggering between tables walks towards Agustin, who looks at her without loosing any track of her movements. A gentleman on one of the tables looks at the Catrina but his female companion grabs him by the collar. Catrina finally reaches Agustins table, and stands up in front of him. AGUSTIN Que rpido llegaste! CATRINA

2 Rpido? S ya te esper setenta aos Catrina sits down, her face is revealed on the big bottle of tequila reposado that Agustin has on top of the table. In the reflection you see how half of her face is a skeleton. AGUSTIN (Smiling) Si no fuera por que se que no eres una mujer en verdad, me asustara. CATRINA Vengo a darte la paz que tanto buscas, deberas agradecer AGUSTIN Agradecer, slo a Dios por permitirme amarla. Si vieras, que lo que ms me duele es que todava est bien buena la condenada. The Catrina takes off her hat. CATRINA Pero cometiste un gran pecado AGUSTIN Slo amar a quien no me amaba, te aseguro que l de all arriba no va a hacer tanto escandalo. CATRINA Aprisionar un corazn se paga caro. AGUSTIN Nadie dijo que no estaba dispuesto a pagar. The waiter arrives with the new shot glass, Catrina grabs the glass with her skeleton hand, Agustin serves her a shot. The stage lights turn on, a guitarist gets on top of it and begin to tune his guitar AGUSTIN La agarr tiernita.

AGUSTIN (CONT) Por eso no tuve hijas, pa que ningn viejo enfermo se las llevara. Antes lo mataba.

STAGE A FEMALE SINGER, wearing a red dress full with sequins, walks into the stage and the few guys inside the cantina begin to yield and whistle. SINGER Ya no ests ms a mi lado, corazn En el alma solo tengo soledad Y si ya no puedo verte Porque Dios me hizo quererte Para hacerme sufrir ms DANCE FLOOR The SINGER walks down the stage, she slowly walks between the tables singing to some gentlemen. SINGER Siempre fuiste la razn de mi existir Adorarte para m fue religin Y en tus besos yo encontraba El calor que me brindaba El amor, y la pasin AGUNSTINS TABLE The SINGER gets to Agustins table, she sings to AGUSTINS ear, while he remains in silence, drinking and listening to her. 4 Apagndola despus The CATRINA keeps an eye on the singer, while she turns around and moves towards her. SINGER Ay que vida tan obscura Sin tu amor no vivir... The Catrina stands up and walks close to Agustin, she grabs his hand as an invitation to dance with her. Agustin accepts, stands up and both walk to the dance floor. The Singer walks back to the stage. DANCE FLOOR The CATRINA hugs AGUSTIN to rests her cold, half-skeleton face towards Agustins cheek without him feeling anything. After dancing for a few seconds the Catrina questions Agustin. CATRINA (VO) No te preguntas s alguna vez te amo? AGUSTIN (VO) Nunca me preocupe por eso. Ella cumpli como deba, siempre fue la mujer que necesite. CATRINA (VO) No le quedaba otra opcin, la compraste desde muy pequea. AGUSTIN (VO) Aun est joven y chula, para que cualquier cabrn le quiera ver la cara. Espero no le salga lo mujer, a veces es inteligente. CATRINA (VO) No te da curiosidad?

5 AGUSTIN (VO) Curiosidad? Por qu? De morir? CATRINA (VO) No, acerca de lo que ella har ahora que tu no ests. AGUSTIN (VO) No me interesa, yo le autorizo que ande de cuzca. CATRINA (VO) Te morirs de fro sin ella AGUSTIN (VO) Dichosos los otros que tengan su calor The Singer ends her performance while people are clapping the Catrina leaves Agustin by himself at the dance floor and returns to the table. AGUNSTINS TABLE The CATRINA drinks a tequila glass without breathing. AGUSTIN comes behind her and does the same think. Then, he wipes his mouth with his handkerchief that carefully folds and puts back inside his chest pocket. AGUSTIN Ser mejor irnos CATRINA Como gustes, hoy te sigo a ti. Agustin grabs on top of the and they both Catrinas hat some money from his pocket and leaves a tip table. Then he grabs the Catrina by the arm walk outside the cantina leaving the on the table. CUT TO:

EXT. TOWN- NIGHT

LOCATION

AGUSTIN and the CATRINA walk outside on the street which remains in silence except for a few OLD LADIES dressed in black and wear mourning veils who are passing by the same street. AGUSTIN Buenas Noches. CATRINA Pobres seoras, creo que la semana que entra vendr por una de ellas. AGUSTIN Mira que macabra eres. Una de ellas perdi a su marido hace un mes. CATRINA Por eso me resultaba tan familiar. Agustin smiles, he stops walking to look at a trio of musicians rehearsing for a serenata. He gets closer to them and takes out the picture of his loved one from his pocket. One of the musicians tunes his instrument to play Farolito EXT. TOWN- DAY (FLASHBACK) LOCATION

ANA, 20s, long, light brown hair stands up to look at a trio of musicians playing Farolito. She stares at them while from nowhere a BOY, 20s, short black hair wearing dirty clothes, takes a picture of her. BOY Se la vend por diez centavos! Ana does not respond. BOY Ande, Ande Diez pecitos! AGUSTIN notices the boy and gets close. AGUSTIN Le puedo ayudar en algo joven?

7 BOY Su hija que no me quiere pagar. AGUSTIN A ver Qu cuesta la mendiga fotito? BOY Diez centavos patrn AGUSTIN Aqu tienes, ndale ya vete! The boy runs away while Agustin puts the picture inside his coat. They both stay there listening to the musicians. EXT. TOWN- NIGHT (PRESENT) LOCATION

CATRINA grabs AGUSTINS arm and they both keep walking. Leaving the trio to rehearse. CUT TO: EXT. AGUSTIN'S HOUSE - NIGHT AGUSTIN and the CATRINA arrive to Agustins home. From the window they see Ana sitting on a chair embroidering. AGUSTIN Quieres pasar? CATRINA Yo me espero, qu? apoco piensas escaparte? The Catrina smiles letting Agustin walk inside his house to meet with his wife. INT. AGUSTIN'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM -DAY (FLASH BACK) AGUSTIN arrives home, his wife ANA is sitting next to the window listening to the radio while embroidering a beige handkerchief. Ana stops what she was doing. Agustin knees in front of her, to grab both of her hands.

AGUSTIN Vengo a pedirte que seas mi novia Ana forces a smile, to immediately stand up, turn off the radio and begins to wrap her work. She puts everything inside her sewing box. Agustin gets behind her, hugs her and pulls two theater tickets from his pocket. AGUSTIN Te parece si te robo? As ya dejas de bordar, te vas a quedar ciega. AGUSTIN ndale aprale, apoco esperas que te desvista yo? Agustin spanks Ana making her run to her room to change. Agustin waits for her, he turns the radio back on. After some minutes she comes back the living room dressed for the occasion. Agustin smiles. INT. AGUSTIN'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM NIGHT (PRESENT) AGUSTIN carefully looks around and contemplates all the pictures hanging on the wall, pictures of them together. On all the pictures on the wall Ana has a sad face and a lost sight. He looks at ANA to see how her face has some tears. Agustin walks forward, grabs his handkerchief from his coat chest pocket and cleans her face. He grabs Ana by the shoulders and kisses her forehead. The CATRINA is looking from outside. Agustin, holds both of Ana's hands, kisses them, and takes off her wedding ring, grabbing both wedding rings in his hands. AGUSTIN Las viudas no deben usar las argollas, se espantan los pretendientes. No ms que no te salga lo mujer y te metas con cualquier cabrn que vengo

9 y les jalo las patas a los dos. Agustin smiles, to then turn around and leave the house. Ana remains still without an opportunity to say or do something. Just after Agustin leaves the house she runs after him. EXT. STREET - NIGHT ANA watch AGUSTIN walking away. The CATRINA walks next to him, with her face now as a full skeleton. Agustin and the Catrina walk away from the street into shadows. Ana walks a few steps but she only finds the two golden rings roll back from the shadows to her feet. She walks away leaving the rings on the street. "Letting a loved one go is the most difficult thing in life" FADE OUT: THE END
