Ms. Caruso English 1103 10/06/2012 Pop Culture is Not Real Culture: A Look into Reality TV Influences in 21st.the Century HISTORY Ironically every topics influenced by reality happened before reality television came about. Sexual content shown on television started in the 1950s when the show All in the Family aired. The show introduced the first mediatized entertainment if exposing women and their role around the house. The quote The 1950s, no sex, please, were American (Streitmatter xiii) shows the break of the status quo in the perfect American way of life. So when reality television began is supposed to only be just fad with the. A fad starting when and his decision to shoot a popularized American family on TV about their everyday life and called it An American Family .He took into his idea because he saw the drama being created, and even purposely tried to create more, becoming involved in the .personal lives. This airing of An American in 1972 lead to the show The Real World produced by MTV in 1992 who wanted to provide their station with more than just only music which we still in season today in 2012
INTRO (Focus Point) Reality television is the most watched genre on television right now. Is it because of the drama? Or the hope that it gives that this could possibly be a potential lifestyle to the person watching; which some would even say is false hope? Or, is it simply just or entertainment? But whos entertainment, ours, society? The cast? Or the producers watching real life take place behind the lights and camera. Usually the people who find no motive in reality TV are who we find the non-supporters. They find no importance or morality in some of the shows aired on TV today, for example the most popular yet contradictory Jersey Shore*.. Yet, if everyday people relate to these real life situations portrayed on television, how can there not be a motive? However it is not all shows that come off as having a lost cause. There are the ones that bring awareness of everyday hardships of America. Digging in deep what this country really has to offer, and keeping up with the people who are truly behind the scenes. For example the show GANGLAND, you hear about gangs all the time, just because you hear doesnt mean everyone knows what really lies in a gang members mind, or gang life consist of. So to someone watching such a show it can be informing, but what if that someone watching a mid-teenaged

boy, will that provoke his interest in gangs? Will seeing Honey Boo Boo competing in pageants provoke a young girl getting into pageantry? Will an American citizen be provoked to vote against his beliefs because of a political joke they heard on SNL and took it a little too literal?.... -ethics intro The ethics of reality television is whats bringing the awareness of people of what is actually happening. What is now happening just on TV, is starting to show all over the society. How great of an impact can one simple genre of television be? Well, it is influencing almost everything from age, sexual content, racial observations, future media, music, women, men, kids, teenagers, control to hair color, shoe type, phone type and/or where you even live. It has captured a broad spectrum and has consumed much of what shapes Americas media society in the 21st century, especially my own generation; one coexisting with the Technology Age. The lost proposal seems to be why is all of this? An audiences idea of ethical does not seem to agree with what might actually be a producer of a reality television programs meaning of an ethical script as giving off a false, yet sometimes capable sense of inspiration and motivation is ethical enough to create millions of dollars per season. It is not showing shows that provide moral ethics that makes the money but showing other peoples ethics across a nation is what keeps an audiences thirst for multiple seasons quenching. Ironically enough, we see the American people as a whole are actually contradicting ourselves when we want more morality included in this country yet love drama and non-ethical content contained in reality television. Reality TV doesn't have to be 100% real for people to enjoy. Most of the time we don't even notice if it's real or not because we are too absorbed in the show. When we watch reality TV, we tend to copy the show to some extent. For example, we copy how they talk, how they dress, and how they hold themselves in public. Reality TV starts trends in the public and without it, most of us would be lost (Karen). This quote made by a blogger on the the website supports that even when not even realizing it, our own pair of eyes is what is actually increasing the problem of unethical television trash being added onto TV. This is called ratings. The more viewers tuned in on a show the higher the ratings for that show which equals a higher demand for shows with similar content which equals more created reality television about lifestyle which equals higher paychecks for the producers who are covered behind the scenes of it all. The main intentions for big production companies such as MTV all along. Produced for financial reasons; shows inexpensive to produces; writers make millions of dollars per season just off of other peoples actions (Guttentag, Bill. Personal Interview. 13 Feb 2008). Concluding, in reality, production companies are really making money off of us, the viewers, and not from showing how an all-star athlete and his or her family on TV , if that is if even how they really live. I know when I tune in to MTV every Thursday night to watch Jersey Shore I cannot take my eyes off the TV even when a commercial comes on because I dont want to miss the next funny thing that Vinny might say, the next fall on the floor Deena might take, or the next punch that might get thrown in the club; they amp up the next episodes with more drama, like a good suspense epeidsonde of Law and Order: SVU. And if I continue to

tune in every Thursday night Ill only add onto the increased ratings, not contributing to making a difference about what is shown on shows similar to Jersey Shore. --< leads into Scripted TV Whats next:
The biggest advice given to someone who faithfully watches Reality Television is not to get too consumed into what you are watching. Because what you see is not what is actually going on. Reality TV attracts mass audiences who see this pop culture and mistake it for real
culture. *use real world set example*. 50% of the reality shows shown on TV actually contained scripted material. Of course, editing and adding scenes are done but this goes far beyond that. Some scenes are actually written for these actors to perform on the next episode. Once finding this out I realized on Season 2 of Jersey Shore, there was an argument between characters Ronnie and Sam and every other episode and I never understood how their relationship was filled with that much drama. I also then realized that is just about every lifestyle reality show that I watch.Location has changed much as well. Usually after the first season, or sometimes first couple of episodes, the rest of the show is shot on a set and not in a real located area. Producers provide the props to be set up as looking like a display of some ones bed room or..
TURNING FAMOUS So how do these become famous? And not us Some reason everyone wants to make it to the big lights or Hollywood, even if they dont know it (unconsciously, its human nature-look up facts or scientific proof)

GENRES All types of reality television shows all over TV. The most popular ones you see in Magazines like Hollywood Access or spoofs on TOSH. O usually includes the celebrity hidden ones or lifestyle fulfillments. We dont much find documentaries or science reality shows much entertaining to the media for some reason, although these genres contain the most ethical content. -TV CHANNELS -DIFFERENT SHOWS BENEFICIAL OR NOT? -CULTURAL LOSS?
