    During WWII, the German military used captured ammunition from various countries in their armed forces. They designated each type of ammunition by its caliber and country of origin. This captured ammunition was issued to reserve and secondary troops initially, and later in the war to less experienced forces like the Volksturm as resources became scarce. After the war, Allied investigative commissions examined and documented the various types of ammunition found in Germany. The document then lists the designations and country of origin for numerous ammunition types from 6.5mm to 14.5mm that the German forces had stockpiled and utilized during the war.

    During WWII the German military system utilised much captured ammunition and to make sense to the users

    thereof they gave each item a designation indicating the calibre and country of origin. This ammunition was issued to reserves, various second line troops and later in the war when things started going bad it was also issued to Volksturm, Hitler youth and in the very last days it was issued to the Wehrmacht itself. At wars end the allies sent many investigative commissions into Germany to study various aspects of the German war machine. The following is a portion of one of those commissions reports:
