SOC 100 PRINCIPLES OF SOCIOLOGY


COURSE DESCRIPTION The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the basic concepts and approaches of sociology. The course aims to assist students in developing a sociological perspective and to enrich their perception of social reality. It is expected that the course will allow students to better understand their own societies and other societies and cultures. COURSE ASSESSMENT AND GRADING

Regular class attendance is essential for this course. Students


are expected to attend the classes and to participate in class discussions. Assigned readings must be completed before the class to be able to have lively discussions. Occasionally, students will be required to write three-minute or five-minute papers on the topic of the week, to be included in their final grade as part of class participation. The assessment of the course will be based on 2 mid-term exams and a final exam. Students are expected to take the exams only on the specified dates. Make-up exams will be done only if the student shows a medical report from the METU clinic. The final grade has the following components and weights: Attendance and class participation: 10% First Mid-Term: 25% Second Mid-Term: 25% Final Exam: 40% REQUIRED BOOK Anthony Giddens, Sociology (Oxford: Polity Press, 2005, 5th Edition) Copies of the book will be kept on reserve in the library.
