Literature Lesson Plan

Discipline: Short Story Professor: Eva Cristina Alves Date: March 20, 2012 Grade Level: Focus: Goals: Students will learn how to read and to develop reading skills; Students will increase and develop reading strategies; Students will see language in action in a context; Students will develop critical thinking abilities. Students will have an opportunity to read authentic material, and to be exposed to the target language; Students will have an opportunity to put the new information acquired into use, and check their background and their development about the language learning process; Students will have an opportunity of work to think critically; Students will have an opportunity of work to integrate the reading skills. Reading Strategies: skimming, scanning; critical thinking 50 min. Duration: Upper Intermediate

Objectives:

Materials: Hand outs with the text Girl, short story by Jamaica Kincaid; Board; Marker; Eraser; Dictionary.

Procedures: Pre Reading: individually and in pairs Activity: brainstorming Objectives: to introduce the topic, to activate background knowledge Duration: 10 min. T asks Ss to imagine themselves as parents of a girl; T tells them to think about what advices they would give to this girl, as their daughter; T gives them 5 min and asks Ss to write down at least 5 advices; T tells Ss to work in pairs, comparing their answers to a partner, if they have similar advices or not; Activity: checking meaning Objectives: to introduce the text, to activate background knowledge Duration: 05 min. T tells Ss they are going to read a short story called Girl, and shows them these words and expressions from the text: CLOTHES-LINE PUMPKIN FRITTERS SPIT WHARF-RAT CREASE TO BENT ON BECOMING TO THROW AWAY A CHILD

T asks Ss to work in pairs and check if they understand what these words and expressions mean, and asks them what they think the short story will be about;

During Reading: work in pairs

Activity: checking meaning Objectives: to skim, to scan Duration: 20 min. - T asks Ss to read the text and tell what the story is about; - T asks Ss to read the text again, looking for the words she gave them and trying to get their meanings from the context. Activity: giving opinion Objectives: to develop critical thinking Duration: 10 min. - T asks Ss to read the text again, underlining the advices they dont agree with; - T then asks Ss to rewrite these advices in the way they think would be better for the girl.

Post Reading: individually

Activity: writing a text Objectives: to criticize the text and to integrate skills T asks Ss to imagine how this text would be different if told from another point of view. T tells them, they will write a text within this perspective to hand in next class. T explains the text must have at least 30 lines. Evaluation: The evaluation component for this lesson is the accomplishment of all tasks that teacher asked students to achieve. If the students did every activity very well, T has achieved the objectives of this lesson. Teacher will give them the feedback.
