Students, faculty and administrators have kicked off the holiday season with a number of Christmas events around the College. The 15th Annual Rust College ACappella Choir Christmas Concert was held Sunday evening, December 2. The choir raised its voices to the rafters with accompaniment by piano, percussion, and a string ensemble. The evening was dedicated to members of the Music Department within the Division of Humanities and most especially Dr. Norman Chapman. Dr. Chapman has served Rust College with 38 years of service to students and education. The Rust College family gathered again Wednesday, December 5 for the annual Christmas Dinner held in Shaw Cafeteria. The Christmas Dinner is an annual tradition where students, faculty, and staff can sit together and enjoy a special meal together. On December 10, students and faculty from the Division of Education traveled to Holy Family School in Holly Springs for the first annual Read Around the Christmas Tree Program. Volunteers from the community, Sacred Heart School, school administrators, sororities, fraternities, and parents, as well as city and county elected officials, read to students in grades pre-K through grade 5, then presented each child a book as a gift. Each child was also given a traditional Christmas bag with an orange, apple, and candy stick.

Promoting Healthy Living at Rust College
Students have participated in a number of events on campus designed to promote health, increase life expectancy, and contributing to the health and needs of others. The Rust College Student Health Center, Religious Life Committee, and the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. sponsored a Mini-Health Fair, Monday December 3rd, where students and staff could have their blood glucose levels checked, receive free HIV/AIDS testing, blood pressure checks and weight and height measurements. Students also were given the opportunity to help others by donating blood via Life Blood and signing up for the National Bone Marrow Registry.

Tips for Healthy Holiday Living from Nurse Hughes-Marion

Set realistic goalsDont try to lose pounds during the holidays, as an alternative try to maintain your current weight. Exercising helps relieve holiday stress and prevent weight gain. Sensibly increasing daily exercise during the holidays can help reduce the urge of overeating. Eat until you are fulfilled, not overstuffed. Delight yourself in your desired holiday foods and goodies, yet eating small portions.
