Grape Antioxidants Combat Anxiety in Rats

Eating grapes may help relieve anxietyand also minimize anxietyrelated hypertension and cognitive impairments, according to a new rat study by researchers at the University of Houston. It is the antioxidants in the grapes that seem to play a protective role on anxiety-like behavior, learning and memory function, and hypertension. The research was presented at the Experimental Biology conference in San Diego, California. Although anxiety disorders, cognitive impairment and hypertension are distinct and complex disorders, they share key features and often overlap. For example, one-fourth of the 40 million Americans with an anxiety disorder also have hypertension. Furthermore, oxidative stress is considered a contributor to learning and memory problems, although the reason for this is not yet clear. The researchers used a rat model to examine the role of oxidative stress as it related to both anxiety-cognitive impairment and hypertension. They discovered that feeding the rodents a grape-enriched diet for two weeks prevented the anxious behavior, learning and memory problems, as well as a rise in blood pressure compared to the rats with induced oxidative stress but no grapes in their diet. These results suggest promising potential for grapes in a very important area of health, said Samina Salim, Ph.D., the lead investigator. We attribute the benefits of the grapes to their antioxidant activity and their ability to combat oxidative stress. Grapes were provided in the form of a freeze-dried whole grape powder by the California Table Grape Commission. AVOCADO Avocados have been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer. Lower Cholesterol Avocados are high in beta-sitosterol, a compound that has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. In one study, 45 volunteers experienced an average drop in cholesterol of 17% after eating avocados for only one week. Heart Health One cup of avocado has 23% of the recommended daily value of folate. Studies show that people who eat diets rich in folate have a much lower incidence of heart disease than those who don't. The vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, and glutathione in avocado are also great for your heart. Stroke Prevention The high levels of folate in avocado are also protective against strokes. People who eat diets rich in folate have a much lower risk of stroke than those who don't. Better Nutrient Absorption Research has found that certain nutrients are absorbed better when eaten with avocado. In one study, when participants ate a salad containing avocados, they absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids (a group of nutrients that includes lycopene and beta carotene) than those who didn't include avocados. Glutathione Source Avocados are an excellent source of glutathione, an important antioxidant that researchers say is important in preventing aging, cancer, and heart disease. Typically, all parts of this special evergreen tree are utilized as an herbal remedy for various ailments, as the leaves, roots, and fruits of the graviola tree all contain specific health benefits. Even the seeds and tree bark can be used. The fruits are usually referred to as guanabana, and are sold in most South American marketplaces. While fresh graviola fruit, or guanabana, will be hard to find outside of South America, you can usually find graviola in many forms in health food markets, and other stores selling herbal remedies and herbal supplements. Graviola can be purchased as capsules or as an extract, or tincture. The graviola leaves can also be found at times, for the purposes of making a graviola tea infusion. The herbal

20
supplements can be found under the names of both graviola and Brazilian Paw Paw, depending upon the manufacturer. South American natives have been using Brazilian Paw Paw as an herbal remedy for many years, and its health benefits have been under research as far back as the 1940s. While a number of health benefits of graviola have already been confirmed, research is still underway as to determine its effectiveness as a possible treatment of various forms of cancer and other serious ailments. Health Benefits of Graviola Graviola has been found to help promote healthy growth of cells, while treating bacterial infectionsboth internally and externally. It has also proven effective against fungal infections as well as helping to kill and dispel worms and intestinal parasites. Additional health benefits of graviola include helping to lower high blood pressure and erratic heart rate. Because of this, it is also useful as a minor sedative. Minor health benefits attributed to Brazilian Paw Paw include helping to promote healthy digestion, and reduce spasms and convulsions, as well as fighting against fevers and viruses. Graviola Tea Graviola leaves are often simmered in water for a period of 20-30 minutes to make a graviola tea. Sometimes the graviola roots and bark are added to the tea as well. The graviola tea is most beneficial as a sedative, as well as calming nerves and as an antispasmodic. Other health benefits of graviola tea also include helping to treat coughs and flu-like symptoms, as well as various heart conditions and other ailments mentioned above. As the different parts of the graviola tree are specifically associated with the treatment of certain symptoms and provide distinct health benefits, it is recommended that you ask a herbologist or someone with knowledge of herbal remedies what part of graviola would be most beneficial to you.

Gotu kola

22
Gotu kola is a perennial belonging to the parsley family of plants. It has been used since ancient times in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Gotu kola may interact with certain medications, so consult a medical professional before trying to prevent, treat or cure any condition with it. Memory Enhancement Gotu kola may help improve memory. According to a study published in 2008 in the "Journal of Alzheimer's Disease," gotu kola supplementation protects neurons in the brain from damage. Specifically in rat models, gotu kola has been found to protect the cells of the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for both short-term and long-term memory as well as spatial navigation. Losing Your Memory? Boost Brain Power in Just 15 Minutes a Day. Free MD Report! www.RepairYourAgingBrain.com Sponsored Links Seizures Gotu kola may be effective as an anti-convulsant, or an anti-seizure agent. A study published in March 2010 in "Epilepsy & Behavior" found that rats given 200 mg per every 2.2 lbs. of body weight with clinically induced seizures displayed fewer convulsions. Gotu kola was found to impact the cholinergic system, a part of the message-sending nervous system, which results in seizures when stimulated. Cerebral Ischemia There is evidence supporting the use of gotu kola for treating cerebral ischemia. Cerebral ischemia is a condition where an insufficient supply of oxygen is available to the brain, resulting in dizziness, slurred speech and a loss of coordination. If sustained over a period of time, cerebral ischemia can also lead to brain damage and death. Gotu kola was found to protect the brain cells of mice from damage from clinically induced cerebral ischemia in a study published in August 2009 in the "Journal of Neuroscience Research." Cancer Gotu kola may help protect against breast cancer. Gotu kola has been associated with cancerreducing effects in human liver cancer and stomach cancer cells, according to an article published in 2009 in the "African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine." Gotu kola works by attacking cancer cells, resulting in apoptosis, or cell death.

Papaya Sweet Answer to our Well Being and Health

Just recently I came across an eye opening book by Barry Thomson Join Our Escape From Death Row-Cancer Jail, where he in a most genuine and generous ways shares valuable information and his knowledge in effective fight against cancer and ill health. Among other very interesting information I red about simple but wonderful papaya and its healing properties. One chapter in this book awoke in me more desire to learn and research as much as I possibly could as on a professional level I deal with people suffering many different health issues and aliments who look for alternative ways to help them. I would love to share what I know as I believe it can make difference in everyday life of many others. I am also hoping that this will prompt other people to share their knowledge about improving our general well being and health. (this book is further described in comment #100 below) Papaya, Paw Paw, Papaw, Tree Melon (botanical name Carica Papaya), it has oblong shape, normally greenish yellow, yellow or orange color. It is a large tree plant fruit usually reaching 2.5kg. It has bitter sweet taste and comes from tropical places with higher humidity, native to Mexico, countries of Central America, Thailand, Africa and Asia and growing well in Australia. Papaya Health Benefits Paw Paw how we call it here in Australia is these days plentiful all year round in most of the countries. The parts that are used medicinally are fruit, seeds, stems and leaves. I did look around and found out you can buy paw paw in all forms, in a form of fermented papaya, herbal teas even tablets and of course plenty of the fresh fruit, which can be eaten as it is or in a form of juice. So you ask what are these awesome healing properties of paw paw? Well where do I start? Papaya fruit is and excellent source of dietary fiber, folate, vitamin A, C and E. It also contains small amount of calcium, iron, riboflavin, thiamine and niacine. It is also very rich in antioxidant nutrients flavonoids and carotenes, very high in vitamin C plus A, and low in calories and sodium.

24

PawPaw tree. Paw paw is rich in enzymes called papain and chymopapain which helps with the digestion, particularly it breaks down the proteins from the food we eat into amino acids. The latest research shows that amino acids are responsible for all what is happening in our organism, basically for what is happening in every chemical reaction as well as our mental and physical health. As we age we produce less of the digestive enzymes in our stomach and pancreas, which leads to ineffective digestion of proteins. Due to this we end up with excess amount of undigested protein, which leads to overgrowth of the bad bacteria in our gastrointestinal system and not enough of amino acids to perform all important chemical reactions. We can say that good quality protein is absolutely essential for our healthy being. This is where the papaya enzymes can be very beneficial.

The papain enzymes are produced in the skinny peel of paw paw. The combination of these enzymes repels insect during the ripening, without this protection paw paw fruit would not survive. Eating paw paw after a meal makes for better digestion, prevents bloating and chronic indigestion. It can also lower the inflammation in the body, alleviates the pain and edema caused by sport injuries. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties papaya can relieve the severity of Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Because of its high antioxidant content, papaya can prevent cholesterol oxidation and can be use in a preventative treatments against atherosclerosis, strokes, heart attacks and diabetic heart disease. In a everyday health papaya works magic on strengthening the immune system preventing the recurrent colds and flu. After treatment with antibiotics eating paw paw or drinking its juice replenishes the good intestinal bacteria, which was destroyed by the antibiotic treatment. The latest good news from eating paw paw comes down once again to papain the enzyme which I talked about, it was found to destroy intestinal parasites. Papain is proteolitic enzyme, which means that it digests inert (non-living) proteins. Intestinal parasites are largely protein, the papain attacks it and causes parasite to die. Also, home applications of leaf and bark papaya extract is

25
used to deal with mouth gums and toothaches which is being effectively practised in many cultures around the world. Papaya Research and Products Papain is also being studied for relief of cancer therapy side effects, especially relieving side effects such as difficulty swallowing and mouth sores after radiation and chemotherapy as well as boosting up the immune system and helping body to fight the cancer. I am big fan of the products made by Rochway, Australian company (for more information visit rochway.com.au) as they use organically grown papaya, producing among other products, product called Papaya35, fermented papaya enzymes. They also produce Blueberry and PawPaw probiotic Punch, which has very strong antioxidant properties that protects against free radicals. Free radicals contribute largely in many diseases such as diabetes, Parkinsons, Alzheimers and cancer. Rochway products are 99% sugar free which makes them suitable for people suffering diabetes as well. As you can see there is plenty we can benefit from this simple fruit, more and more research is being done and I cant wait to hear more about it. For references and more on the current studies you can look up PubMed Gov. ( search www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ ) as for the products there are few available on the market. I am sure if you look around you will be able to find many available or simply stick with the fresh fruit. I would absolutely love new info on papaya and I would love to hear from any one who used it to improve their health. NONI

Noni juice is traditionally made by fermenting the fruit of the noni, or Morinda citrifolia, tree for five to seven weeks and then separating and draining off the juice that accumulates. It grows naturally on Pacific islands where it has been used by traditional healers for hundreds of years. Recently it has gained popularity in North America, where it is marketed for the treatment of a variety of ailments. Although noni juice has been found to be a potent antioxidant, most of its benefits have not yet been substantiated with solid scientific evidence, according to Will McClatchey in an article entitled "From Polynesian Healers to Health Food Stores: Changing Ethnopharmacology of Morinda Citrifolia," published in the "Journal of Integrative Cancer Therapy." Active Ingredients of Noni Juice The medicinal effects of noni juice are thought to be a result of the numerous phytochemicals found in the juice. Phytochemicals are substances, derived from plants, which play an important role in your overall health but have not yet been established as essential nutrients. According to a 2011 research article in the journal "Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine," a scientific analysis of noni juice found it is high in the following phytonutrients: saponins, triterpenes, steroids, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides. Cancer Treatment Center Herbal Treatment and Acupuncture Treatment Center. Visit Us Today! www.thetole.org Sponsored Links List of Purported Health Benefits Anecdotal evidence suggests that noni juice may be helpful for the treatment of arthritis, atherosclerosis, bad breath, bacterial and fungal infections, cancer, depression, detoxification, diabetes, diarrhea, heart trouble, high blood pressure, indigestion, inflammation, fever, gastric or oral ulcers, gingivitis, menstrual cramps, nervous system support, pain relief, respiratory disorders, senility, sore gums, sore throat, toothache, tuberculosis and weight loss. McClatchey says that most of these benefits are based on testimonials alone, however, and only a few are backed up by scientific evidence.

27
Noni for Diabetes Preliminary studies have found noni juice to be an effective supplement for the treatment of diabetes. According to the study presented in "Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine," after 20 days of treating diabetic animals with noni, a significant normalization of hyperglycemia -- high blood-sugar levels -- occurred that was almost equivalent to that of the animals treated with traditional diabetic drugs. The animals taking noni juice also had significantly less liver damage and fatty deposits in their livers than animals in the placebo group. Noni juice's mechanism of action is not yet known, but it is suspected that noni either helps to promote insulin secretion or enhance insulin sensitivity in the body. Noni for Cancer Noni has become the subject of research as a therapeutic supplement for cancer patients. Studies show that noni stimulates an immune response, most likely as a result of polysaccharides, which are antioxidant-rich substances found in noni juice. One study found that the polysaccharides in noni juice helped to prevent the proliferation of breast and colon cancer cells. Another substance that was found in noni, called a glycoside, was found to inhibit cancer cells from attacking and damaging DNA and replicating. This research is still preliminary, but McClatchey says that studies are showing promise for the use of noni as a therapeutic adjunct for cancer sufferers. LIST OF FOODS TO EAT FOR YOUR BLOOD TYPE

Mar 6, 2011 | By Lynette Hingle

According to Dr. Michael Lam, chemical reactions occur between the foods you eat and your blood type. These occurrences are caused by proteins called lectins. When you eat foods that are not beneficial for your blood type, these lectins target bodily organs or other areas and cause the blood cells in these areas to clump together and cause disease. Dr. Lam believes that everyone should eat a blood-type-specific diet that will protect their blood cells from uncomplimentary food attacks.

TYPE O
People with type O blood flourish on a high-protein diet because they digest meat easily. The most beneficial meats for type O blood types are lamb, beef, venison, mutton and veal. However, type O blood types should not consume pork or goose. The most beneficial fish for type O blood types are herring, mackerel and cod, and the least beneficial are catfish, conch, octopus, salmon, barracuda, caviar, octopus and pickled herring. Type O blood types should severely restrict eggs and dairy products and should not eat many whole-wheat products because they are not well tolerated by this blood type. People with type O blood should eat collard greens, garlic, spinach, artichokes, red peppers, sweet potatoes, romaine lettuce and figs, plums and prunes to support optimal health.

TYPE A
Type A blood types should not eat meat because they naturally have a low stomach-acid content that cannot digest land animal meats. However, type A blood types can eat seafood such as yellow perch, red snapper, monkfish, salmon, carp, group, mackerel, silver perch, snails and rainbow trout. Type A blood types cannot easily digest dairy products but can consume goat milk and cheese, yogurt, mozzarella, kefir, ricotta and feta cheeses. Type A blood types can digest cereals, grains and pastas well and should eat an abundance of fresh, organic vegetables including alfalfa sprouts, romaine lettuce, Swiss chard, dandelion greens, artichokes, turnips and okra. Type A blood types should eat a wide variety of fruits including plums, blackberries, cranberries, figs and prunes.

TYPE B
People with type B blood can flourish on a wider variety of foods than any of the other blood types. Type B blood types should eat meats such as rabbit, venison, turkey, veal, beef, lamb, pheasant and mutton and abstain from chicken, goose, duck, pork, quail and Cornish hens. Type B blood types should eat seafood such as flounder, halibut, trout, sole, salmon and flounder but should abstain from all shellfish, yellowtail tuna, snails, striped bass, eel, frogs and barracudas.

29
People with type B blood can eat a variety of dairy foods including cow and goat milk, cottage cheese and ricotta, but not American or blue cheese, string cheese or ice cream. Type B blood types should also abstain from grains and eat green, leafy vegetables, and bananas, grapes and plums.

TYPE AB
People with type AB blood generally have a weak immune system and should eat a vegetable-rich diet that includes green, leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, cucumber, mushrooms and parsnips. Type AB blood types can eat a variety of fruits including plums, grapes, cherries, grapefruit and cranberries but cannot tolerate tropical fruits such as coconut, bananas, mangoes and guava. People with type AB blood can eat a wide array of carbohydrates including rice, sprouted wheat and flour products, but should abstain from corn and buckwheat products. Type AB blood types do not digest meat well and should not eat chicken, veal, beef, pork or shellfish. However, AB blood types can eat turkey, lamb, rabbit, tuna, ocean perch, monkfish, grouper and sardines.

BILA-BILA (Goosegrass)
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2009

My maternal grandparents were both diagnosed with high blood pressures which my mother had also inherited from them. One of the many discomforts my mother always complains is that of herstomach pains which she thinks might be causing her blood pressure to rise.

We have been in the look out for any discomfort she is feeling. We hadobserved before that after she had eaten her meals, she would complain feeling dizzy. She felt like there is a lump in her throat making her felt like choking. Then her heartbeat goes faster than normal. It looks like her heart is pumping so hard and fast we could even see her chest go up and down making her body shake. We thought it was because of the food that she ate that reacted to her blood pressure.

30

I was searching into the Internet about medical symptoms similar to hers and found out that what she is actually experiencing was an acid reflux. This is a disease commonly known asGastrointestinal Reflux Disease or GERD and is also related to heartburn. This is characterized by a cough, burning sensation in the stomach, chest, sore throat, and pain in the gastric region. Often patients with GERD will experience the presence of gastric content returning into the oral cavity (mouth) especially upon lying down at night.

We tried those prescription medicines but it did not work even well on her, instead the drugs gave her unpleasant side effects particularly severe headaches. So we resorted toherbal remedies and gladly we found one that best suits her. This plant is called Bila-Bila in our native tongue orgoosegrass in English. This plant is used to cure acid refluxand ulcers. The following are the steps to prepare it: Steps:

Wash one whole bila-bila plant with its roots and put in a clay pot. Fill it with 2 glasses of water and boil in a low fire until an estimate of one glass of decoction is left. Remove from fire and let cool. Drink the decoction daily before bedtime until the symptoms subside. It did very well for my mother. Maybe it will for you, too. But careful analysis and considerations of the ailments should be done before you use herbal plants.

Health Benefits of Sea Cucumber Extract sea cucumber

The sea cucumber (Ho lothuroidea) is a marine invertebrate high in protein, and is used to treat many medical conditions. Related to sea urchins and starfish, they are found around the world on the ocean floor, and are named for their resemblance to the common garden salad vegetable, the cucumber. These sea creatures come in a variety of sizes and colors, from black, to bright red, or even transparent.

33

There are more than 1,000 different species identified so far. Known for its anti-aging properties, the sea cucumberis popular in Asian cuisine, containing a high concentration of vitamins and minerals, and less than 2% fat. The Chinese name for them is haishen, which translates to ginseng of the sea. For many centuries, practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine have believed that the oceans hold many of the answers to health, well-being and longevity. In traditional Chinese medicine, marine products have been used to treat kidney disorders, joint pain, general fatigue, constipation and reproductive problems, including impotence. Marine plants and animals are harvested, sometimes boiled, then dried and ground into a powder and made into salves, potions or other forms of medicinal preparations. These preparations are called nutraceuticals. That is a food or food extract which has a medical or health benefit. Just as pharmaceuticals, man made preparations of various chemicals and who knows what else, nutraceuticals provide the same health benefit with the use of natural components found in the foods we eat. The Holothuroidea extract is known to contain a powerful anti inflammatory, and when prepared with other marine plant and animal extracts, is an effective natural immune modulator. The medicinal properties of these marine extracts have now come to the attention of the biomedical and scientific sector of the Western World. Collaborative studies by scientists from China, Japan, Russia and the United States indicates that compounds found in sea cucumber extract may help stop the growth of cancer cells Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre is a cancer treatment and research institution, founded in 1884 as the New York Cancer Hospital. Research undertaken there indicates that the saponin content (triterpene glycosides) and fatty acids in Sea Cucumber may be useful as an agent to treat malignant growths and diseases. It also shows immense angiogenesis inhibition potential as well. Researchers at Sloan Kettering say the Holothuroidea is very rich in the mucopolysaccharide chondroitin sulfate. (Chondroitin sulfate is commonly used as an over-the-counter treatment for arthritis pain.) A study published by Daniel O. Clegg M.D. in 2006 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine found that chrondroitin sulfate was effective in reducing arthritis pain in the group of subjects with moderate to severe arthritis pain. Other scientific studies have indicated that Sea Cucumber extract is effective in treating some forms of cancer. A study published by Alexandra B. Roginsky M.D. in July 2010 issue of Journal of Neuroendocrine Tumours and Pancreatic Diseases and Sciences states that extracts from an edible, non-toxic sea cucumber effectively caused cell damage and cell death

34
in human pancreatic cancer cells. The results of this study are encouraging for the potential use of sea cucumber extract as a dietary supplement which may be used in the treatment or prevention of pancreatic cancer. Other studies are currently being carried out on the effectiveness of nutraceuticals, particularly the sea cucumber, in the treatment and prevention of many different cancers. Research findings will be posted here as they become available.

Health Benefits of Pineapples

The Golden Fruit with the Magic Touch

Pineapples, since long ago symbols of welcome and hospitality, indeed have a magic touch, bringing lots of good things to
your body. Bromelain enzymes are what we are talking about. These enzymes are said to reduce inflammation, lower risk of thrombosis and contain cancer-fighting properties. The health benefits of pineapples can also include better digestion, protection from macular degeneration and prevention of nausea. Pineapples contain high quantities of water-soluable antioxidants that reduce free radicals, which can be linked to asthma, diabetes, colon cancer and more severe joint pain in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The trick is to get ahold of a fresh fruit and eat it in its most natural state, as processing and especially cooking will destroy any of its benefits. The spiky fruit has come a long way from its original Paraguay. The good news is that youd be hardpressed not to find pineapples at just about any market. So whats the big deal, you ask? Put briefly, here are some of the principal benefits of eating pineapples: High in vitamin C Good source of potassium Loaded with manganese Anti-inflammatory Aid in digestion Reduces blood clotting May help angina by removing plaque from arterial walls

The Tropical Fruit Bignay or Wild Cherry: Culinary Uses and Nutrition
The origins of bignay fruit; also its culinary uses and medicinal, nutritional properties. The bignay fruit tree, or Antidesma bunius, is native to the tropics of the Indian subcontinent and was naturalized in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, where it is a common site in towns and villages. The name bignay or berunai ( as it is known in Malaysia) is thought to have been the inspiration for the naming of the Nation of Brunei and possibly Borneo. Bignay is also known as bignai or buni in the Philippines; ma mao luang in Thailand; choi moi in Vietnam; chunka in Australia and wild cherry or current tree in English. This tropical fruit is highly nutritious and has antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic properties.

Bignay fruits are tiny berries that grow in large clusters on an attractive evergreen tree. Because the berries ripen at different times they usually vary in shades of color from reds and yellows to purples and greens. Bignay fruit is sweet when fully ripened, although it can very acidic and tart when unripe, similar to cranberries. According to research peoples taste perception of bignay tends to vary as to where they originate from. Many westerners tend to find bignay fruit very sour, although people indigenous to Asia and Australasia often describe the taste of ripe bignay as sweet. This is thought to be a genetic trait. The bignay tree, a member of the spurge botanical family, also bears small reddish flowers, the scent of which is repulsive to some.

In the 19th century the bignay tree was introduced to Florida from the Philippines. The tree was cultivated for its fruit which was used to make jam and also wine and brandy. Nowadays the tree is grown mostly as an ornamental. The bignay tree, in particular its leaves, is very susceptible to infestation, mostly from termites in Southeast Asia, but from mealy bugs in the USA.

Culinary Uses: Bignay is most often eaten raw or made into juice. It can be used for jam, although it may be necessary to combine bignay with another fruit that contains a higher pectin content. Otherwise pectin should be added to thicken the jam. In the Philippines and Indonesia the leaves are used to add an aromatic flavor to rice and fish dishes. They are often stewed or can be eaten raw, although the leaves of this tree have a slightly leathery texture. The bignay berries are also used to make sweet and savory sauces. The juice of bignay fruit can be greatly improved by preparing it the previous day. After juicing and straining the fruit, allow it to stand overnight in a jug, then carefully poor the jug into another container. Discard the sediment that has settled in the bottom of the jug, which has a highly acidic taste.

36
Nutritional Value: People in Southeast Asian countries have valued bignay for it medicinal benefits for many years. The fruit has been used to treat such ailments as dysentery, diabetes, gastric intestinal problems and indigestion to name a few. Researchers in Northeastern Thailand identified a number of phytochemicals in bignay. Phytochemicals are non-nutrients derived from plant sources. The potent antioxidant properties of these compounds cannot be explained alone by the presence of vitamins, minerals or fiber content. These plant compounds which help protect the fruit against its environment have numerous health benefits to humans.

The most prevalent of these compounds in bignay fruit are a group of flavonoids in the sub-class known as catechins, identified as procyanidin B1 and B2. Catechins, also found in red wine and dark chocolate, have antioxidant properties and are free radical scavengers, meaning they help prevent free radical damage to DNA. This means that catechins are anti-carcinogenic and anti-aging They can also help protect us against cardiovascular diseases.

Other Uses: The leaves of the bignay tree can cause a person to sweat and as such are traditionally used to treat snakebites in Asia. The bark of the bignay tree, which contains a toxic drug, is used to make rope. The tree's hard wood is used to make cardboard.
