This abstract is being submitted for an Oral Presentation of 60 minutes in the clinical practice
tract.
ABSTRACT:
At least half of primary care visits are made primarily for emotional or psychological complaints
manifested in physical complaints, including pain. This presentation will define and discuss the
components of patients who somatize through looking at the clinical picture and presenting
history. The concept of symptom amplification and Waddell signs will be presented. Organ and
emotional relationships along with Chapman and spinal reflexes will be reviewed. Manual
therapy through expressive manipulation as psychological and psychophysiological treatment will
be presented focusing on the therapeutic intent of manipulative techniques to integrate the body-
self and stimulate the vis medicatrix naturae leading to the patient healing.

BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. Nick Buratovich is a Professor and the Department Chair of Physical Medicine at the
Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences.
He graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1983. He is an original
faculty member at Southwest College and also serves as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees
for the College. He maintains a clinical rotation at the Southwest Naturopathic Medical Center as
well as a private practice in naturopathic family medicine with an emphasis in musculoskeletal
disorders and pain management.
