Presentation Title: Applied Oriental Medicine: Incorporating Oriental Medicine

Principles and Treatments into Modern Medicine

Short Description of Presentation

The art of Oriental medicine goes beyond the understanding of yin/yang and needle placement.
Evaluating common botanicals and minerals using Chinese herbal principles can amplify their
use the clinical practice. This presentation will demystify Oriental medicine modalities and
explain how simple principles of this ancient medicine can enhance modern treatments.

Abstract

The use of Chinese medicine in modern practice has been proven in treating physical symptoms
like pain, headaches, and nausea. Chinese medicinal herbs have continued to be prescribed as
modern research has added new information about their potential use to their traditional actions.
New indications for the role of Chinese medicine in treating more complex diseases and
conditions are being discussed by acupuncturist, medical doctors, and wholistic providers making
it one of the most sought after alternative medicine therapies by the public. However, there is still
a hint of mystery about how and why Chinese medicine works so well outside of the acupuncture
community.

This presentation will cover principles, modern research, and treatment protocols using Chinese
medicine that can help provide a different approach to treating patients beyond traditional care.
The information presented can be applied by those who can and can not perform acupuncture
under their scope of practice or may not be familiar with Chinese herbalism. The information
presented will be applicable to attendees at any level in their training by building on the basic
Chinese medicine foundations of Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang and Chinese Herbal Combinations.
Another objective is to help stimulate more interest within the medical community to expand
their practices through using the less invasive, simplistic health approaches.

Thought-out the presentation there will be explanations on how acupuncture and herbal
treatments came about by examining historical principles and modern Traditional Chinese
medicine pattern theory, as to better understand the true nature of Chinese medicine. This will be
followed by reviewing thoughts about the integration of this ancient art using scientific research
trials, single herbal constituent analysis, and clinical keynotes. Included is also a discussion on
how different medical professions view the use of Chinese medicine and how acupuncturists see
their position in the healthcare paradigm.
In keeping with the conference topic, “Physician, Heal Thy World,” a goal of this presentation is
to demonstrate how a different part of the world places importance on the type of medicine it
offers. Although Naturopathy and Chinese medicine often seem foreign to each other, they share
the same goals of healing the Whole, strengthening the Vital Force/Qi, and resolving the
imbalance within. Understanding this notion and building from it connects one side of the
medical world to the other under the same purpose to benefit the good of all the world’s patients.

Biographical Sketch

Stephanie Pina, ND, MSOM

Dr. Pina obtained her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of
Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ. She completed her Masters in Oriental Medicine at the
Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture and is taking national acupuncture
licensing boards. She is in private practice in Tempe, AZ. and has worked with a number of
specialists in the Phoenix area to help incorporate Oriental medicine into their practices. Dr. Pina
has lectured to the public on preventative medicine issues in hopes to inspire patient health
awareness. She was involved in the development and marketing of a Chinese herbal product
promoted towards Naturopathic medical use with one of the leading Chinese herbal disruptors in
the United States.

Dr. Pina has also written for The East Valley Women’s Magazine, To Your Health Magazine and
The Townsend Letter.
